The charged opening sequence of "The Case Against 8" (HBO, June 23) catches former Solicitor General Ted Olson in the thick of a dress rehearsal. With the curtain call of oral arguments before the Supreme Court looming, his fellow legal eagles pepper him with questions the justices might ask; the montage quickens with the soundtrack's strings; and the scene culminates in Olson's rousing final remarks. "If this is unconstitutional, it's unconstitutional today," he says of Proposition 8, the gay marriage ban California voters passed in 2008. "That's why we have a Constitution, that's why we have a Fourteenth Amendment, and that's why you have the job that you do." As filmmaker Ryan White explains, this unaccountably exciting piece of legal wrangling became part of the final product by dint of documentary serendipity. "Ted didn't want us to film it," White, who co-directed and produced the film with ex-acquisition executive Ben Cotner, said with.

The most important day of my life is Jan. 3, 2014. It's the day I married my husband, Fabian Quezada-Malkin. The second most important day actually occurred less than six months before that. On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially struck down California's anti-gay marriage ballot initiative Prop 8, as well as the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma), the federal government's ban on recognizing same-sex unions. And that is why I shed more than a few tears the other night at the L.A. premiere of The Case Against Prop 8, a fascinating and powerful documentary about the federal lawsuit to overturn Prop 8. Filmed over five years, the movie follows lawyers Ted Olson and David Bois as they fight...

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon, Martin Sheen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Christine Lahti in staged reading
On Saturday night in Los Angeles a group of A-listers tried to walk the precarious line between aesthetics and public service. George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Kevin Bacon took part in a staged reading of Dustin Lance Black's dramatic adaptation of the landmark case that overturned California's anti-gay marriage referendum, Proposition 8.
The result is a little wobbly. 8 is a condensed, episodic, collage of trial highlights, hammily read by a group of bafflingly good-looking people. Watching Pitt, his long straw-coloured hair pulled back and matted down, put on the sterilised airs of a Us federal court judge, is somewhat distracting (Is Brad Pitt smart, by the way? He seems kind of smart. But whenever he recites smart dialogue it sounds like those words have never formed in his mouth before. Like the word 'statute'.

Many of Hollywood's A-listers got together on Saturday (March 3) for the West Coast premiere reading of the play "8," which reenacts the court case regarding California's gay marriage ban. For those who weren't able to attend or would just like to see the performance, the full play is up on YouTube.
Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Martin Sheen and others performed at the one-night only benefit. In an interesting casting twist, openly gay actors Jane Lynch and George Takei played characters who are opposed to gay marriage.
Political activist Sheen, who plays attorney Theodore B. Olson, explains to CBS why it was important for him to be associated with the project. He says, "A segment of our population is being dehumanized."
The play, which was written by Dustin Lance Black (writer, "Milk" and "J. Edgar"), was directed by Rob Reiner and also featured Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Chris Colfer, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Bacon.

What does it take to get people to a play these days? How about George Clooney, Kevin Bacon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Martin Sheen, John C. Reilly, and a promising theatrical newcomer named Brad Pitt.
All these celebs came out in force to participate in a live benefit reading/YouTube broadcast of Academy Award-winning "Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black's play "8," based on California's monumental Perry v. Schwarzenegger trial, which ruled the same-sex marriage-banning bill Proposition 8 unconstitutional in February of this year.
The reading was directed by filmmaker/noted political activist/one-time "Meathead" Rob Reiner, no stranger to charged courtroom drama after "A Few Good Men" and "Ghosts of Mississippi," who is also planning a documentary about Prop 8.
Based on the 200,000 people who tuned in for the live stream, and the estimated million before the week is out, Reiner should also consider making "When Prop 8 Met Sally."

Often times celebrities are given rolling eyes when they become invested in a political movement, but their collective star power can make a major impact. On March 3 at the Ebell of Los Angeles, The American Foundation for Equal Rights staged a one-night-only reading, verbatim theatre style, of a play that was written by Academy-award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk) and directed by Rob Reiner (The Bucket List). The play was based on the transcripts from the Perry vs. Schwarzeneggger trial, which Afer filed with the district court to overturn Proposition 8, the bill preventing gay and lesbian couples from marrying in California.

New York — For anyone who missed the star-studded, one-night-only Broadway debut of the gay marriage play "8" or can't get to Los Angeles this spring to see George Clooney lead a West Coast version, there's hope: The play is coming to a theater near you.
The only bad news – no Clooney.
The pro-gay marriage American Foundation for Equal Rights and partner Broadway Impact are sponsoring dozens of productions of Dustin Lance Black's play starring local actors across the country this election year. It'll be shown in states where marriage battles loom, including Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire and North Carolina.
Adam Umhoefer, the foundation's project director, said the glitzy Broadway show and upcoming California counterpart help fund getting the play mounted elsewhere. "Those big tent-pole shows bring attention to the play so that all these other groups across the country can work on their productions," he said.

New York -- A play based on last year's federal court fight over California's gay marriage ban made its Broadway debut on Monday night with an all-star cast, only hours after a federal judge decided to unseal the trial's video recordings.
Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black's play "8" was born, in part, by frustration that Proposition 8 backers had succeeded in getting the U.S. Supreme Court to bar broadcast of the landmark case.
During the trial, former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson and attorney David Boies – best known as adversaries who represented opposing sides in the disputed 2000 presidential election – put on a powerfully clear argument in favor of gay marriage. Prop. 8 was eventually ruled unconstitutional in August 2010. The case is under appeal.
Black, a member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, wrote his play using the trial transcript, firsthand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

The president's view on the constitutionality of the law had changed, Carney said. But Obama's personal views on the legality of same-sex marriage were still evolving. "The president is obligated to enforce the law," Carney said, but he would no longer defend it in federal court.

Good news for Blue Valentine! Deadline is reporting that the MPAA has changed the gritty indie’s dreaded NC-17 rating to a much-friendlier R after Harvey Weinstein himself appeared at today’s appeal hearing. When EW spoke to the Weinstein last month, he said he had already assembled lawyers to appeal the rating, including Alan Friedman, who helped TWC win an R rating for Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and David Boies, who represented Al Gore in the 2000 Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore and teamed with former Solicitor General Theodore Olson this year to challenge California Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage.

In his battle to overturn the NC-17 rating of Blue Valentine, the gritty relationship drama starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, The Weinstein Company co-head Harvey Weinstein tells EW he has already assembled lawyers to appeal the rating to the MPAA. Weinstein says he’s tapped Alan Friedman, who helped TWC win an R rating for Zack and Miri Make a Porno following a rare reversal by the MPAA, and David Boies, who represented Al Gore in Bush v. Proposition 8 was overturned today by a federal judge, who ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in California.
The judge said that the proposition was unconstitutional under both the due-process and equal-protection clauses.
Ellen DeGeneres reacted to the ruling with a jubilant tweet, saying, "This just in: Equality won!"
Such Hollywood heavyweights as producer Bruce Cohen, director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner and writer Dustin Lance Black played a key role in bringing together the two attorneys, Theodore Olson and David Boies, who took on the case, known as Perry v. Schwarzenegger.
Filed by two same-sex couples and the city of San Francisco, the plaintiffs' suit argued that Proposition 8, which was approved by California voters in 2008, was an unlawful infringement on the civil rights of gay men and lesbians.
The ruling by Vaughn R. Walker, the chief judge of the Federal District Court in San Francisco, sided with the plaintiffs.

"This just in: Equality won!" Ellen DeGeneres jubilantly posted on Twitter as word spread throughout Hollywood on Wednesday that a federal judge had overturned Proposition 8, California's gay marriage ban.
"And justice is served. We are equal once more. God bless the letter of the law," director-producer Adam Shankman chimed in a few moments later with a tweet of his own.
But screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, one of a handful of Hollywood heavyweights who helped fund the case by forming the American Foundation for Equal Rights, also warned that the battle for gay and lesbian rights is far from over because the potentially landmark case is being appealed by Protect Marriage -- a coalition of religious and conservative groups that sponsored the ban -- to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and from there could go to the Supreme Court.
"We're all celebrating today, but everyone who worked on this,...

The annual Time 100 issue names the people who most affect our world.
Indians who made it to the list are Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (3rd time), Sachin Tendulkar (1st time) and Chetan Bhagat (1st time).
Unfortunately Shah Rukh Khan (0 times) couldn't make it to the list. Preity Zinta (0 times) was also said to be in the running, but she couldn't make it either!
Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a wild card entry into the Time 100 Alumnae list along with the likes of Condoleezza Rice, Sarah Palin, Alicia Keys and Serena Williams. What is interesting to note is that, where as Singh, Srk, Preity, Bhagat made (or didn't make) to the list through votes, The Time 100 alumnae list was exclusively chosen by the Time panel of judges choosing the ones from the previous lists who had made the most impact and had the highest influence on the world...

Above you can see a segment from last night's Countdown, as Keith Olbermann chats with John Dean about the federal lawsuit filed yesterday to have Prop 8 overturned. Attorneys Theodore B. Olson and David Boies fought on opposite sides when Bush vs. Gore (which contested the 2000 election) was taken to court, but they've teamed up to take on the fight for marriage equality (sort of like when bitter rivals Godzilla and Rodan joined forces to defeat the evil Ghidrah, the three-headed monster).
They also discuss the trepidation that many Lgbt groups have, fearing "ill-timed lawsuits":
The groups released a new publication, "Why the ballot box and not the courts should be the next step on marriage in California." This publication discourages people from bringing premature lawsuits based on the federal Constitution because, without more groundwork, the U.S. Supreme Court likely is not yet ready to rule that same-sex couples cannot be barred from marriage.
