The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the presenters for the upcoming 96th Oscars on March 10.
While names like Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) were expected, as it’s custom for the most recent Best Actor winner to present Best Actress, and the most recent Best Actress winner to present Best Actor, the rest of the slate is almost all past Academy Award winners and arguably the biggest young star of the moment.
Two-time Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali and Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”) among them, plus the recent popularity of Season 4, opens the door to the Oscars having a nod to “True Detective” (“Night Country” star Jodie Foster also happens to be a Best Supporting Actress nominee.)

On Sunday, Hollywood’s biggest names gathered at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, California, as the 29th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, honoring the best film and TV performances of the past year, were handed out live.
For the first time since 1998, the ceremony was not broadcast on TV. Instead, it aired on Netflix’s YouTube channel after it was announced that the platform will begin streaming the ceremony live in 2024, as part of a multi-year partnership with SAG-AFTRA.
Going into the awards, “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both led with five nominations each, including four individual acting nods and one for ensemble. The two films tied a record previously set by “Shakespeare in Love” (1998), “Chicago” (2002), and “Doubt” (2008).
“Ozark”, meanwhile, had the most TV nominations, with four, including one for best drama ensemble, while “Barry” and “Only Murders in the Building” led the comedy categories with three each.

Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther” made history four years ago when it won the first Oscar for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film — in fact, it won three: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Now, the highly anticipated sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has been nominated for five Academy Awards and could very likely win the same number of trophies. Just like last time around, the sequel is the favorite to win Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter. Its other potential victories are for a pair of A-list superstars: Angela Bassett in Best Supporting Actress and Rihanna in Best Song. (“Wakanda” is also nominated for Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects.)
The original blockbuster received a total of seven Oscar nominations including a coveted Best Picture bid, a first (and so far only) such feat for an MCU movie. “Black Panther” won for costumes, production design and score,...

We're back at the Hollywood ballot box, folks. Awards season is back upon us, and we're starting off strong with some major contenders for the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards Awards. "The White Lotus" star Haley Lu Richardson and "Emily in Paris" star Ashley Park announced the nominations via livestream early on January 11. The ceremony will be next month on February 26 and will be accessible for viewing via YouTube and Netflix. SAG used to have an air deal with TBS and TNT — which is probably where you remember watching the SAGs if you've been a viewer in the past — but that deal expired last year.
As for the slate of film nominees, a lot of the patterns we've seen so far are continuing. Brandon Fraser is getting praise for his emotional turn in "The Whale," and Cate Blanchett is getting her flowers for her fierce performance in "Tár." But something cool...

Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis drove to the Palm Springs Film Festival Gala together, and while Curtis presented Blanchett with the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her performance in “Tár,” the two delighted the audience with banter about who’s the better driver. But Blanchett brought the energy up to a fever pitch when she revealed that prior to their drive, Curtis had repacked her bag and came “out in her bra and knickers.”
“We had this lengthy conversation,” Blanchett recalled at the top of her speech. “A discussion about whether I should get into pajamas before driving back tonight. Meanwhile, she’s telling me this about what I should wear, and she comes out in her bra and knickers. This is why we nearly missed the tonight’s event.”
The two worked together on Eli Roth’s upcoming feature “Borderlands,” which Blanchett filmed prior to beginning Todd Field’s psychological drama.

Acclaimed playwright Samuel D. Hunter began the journey of adapting his award-winning play “The Whale” almost exactly 10 years ago to the day, he just didn’t necessarily realize it at the time. It was November 29, 2012, when director Darren Aronofsky saw a production of “The Whale” in New York City and shortly afterward reached out to Hunter about turning the play into a film.
“When we first started getting together, we were kind of feeling each other out and figuring out what exactly this wanted to be,” Hutner tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview of his initial meetings with Aronofsky. Hunter was initially concerned that a film version of “The Whale,” which focuses on the final days in the life of a morbidly obese English teacher named Charlie (Brendan Fraser) as he tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter (Sadie Sink), would expand the play beyond its claustrophobic setting: Charlie’s small apartment.

Youth may not be wasted on the young. Austin Butler turned 31 in August, and he’s a top Oscar contender for Best Actor for his performance as the title King of Rock and Roll in “Elvis.” If he wins, he would be the first man born in the 1990s to win Best Actor.
SEEElvis Presley portrayed on screen: Austin Butler, Kurt Russell, Don Johnson …
It’s relatively common for younger women to claim acting Oscars, but the motion picture academy tends to prefer more seasoned male performers. Only one man ever won Best Actor in his 20s: Adrien Brody was just a few weeks shy of his 30th birthday when he prevailed for “The Pianist” in March 2003. So Butler wouldn’t be the youngest champ in the history of the category. On the date of the next Oscars ceremony — March 12, 2023 — Butler will be 31 years and 207 days old, which would make him the fifth youngest champ.
