It’s been a stellar year of cinema and pop culture-themed books, and the texts (and Blu-rays) in this round-up all make fine gifts. One additional book that should be on your year-end list is Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier. It’s a satisfying companion to season three of Peaks, not to mention Frost’s own Secret History of Twin Peaks. So be sure to check out Nick Newman’s recent interview with the Peaks co-creator.
Live Cinema and Its Techniques by Francis Ford Coppola (Liveright)
The legendary Francis Ford Coppola has spoken of “live cinema” with regularity over the years, specifically with respect to 1981’s One From the Heart. That film, a box office flop now held in some regard, is an essential part of Live Cinema and Its Techniques, a fascinating new book authored by Coppola himself. The lessons from that experience, Coppola says,...

I don’t play Minecraft. There’s just something about the idea of building my own fun that fundamentally does not appeal to the lazy gamer in me, and I’d rather have something self-contained and pre-fabricated dropped into my lap for my thumbs to enjoy without the obligatory planning and construction stages thrown in.
But in a massive contradiction, I love Lego, and still ache to buy every brightly coloured set that populates the shelves of my local supermarkets and toystores (which is why I do buy them…). Lego’s lastest official announcement has put those two contrasting stances on a collision course, thanks to the unlikely sounding marriage of the Scandinavian construction blocks and the massively popular Minecraft.
When you think about it, Minecraft is just a clever new Lego, which allows players to actually play out the fantasies that Lego only facilitated in the player’s mind’s eye,...

Because we movie geeks like to keep track of how close we are to creating real-life versions of the fictional technology featured in Back to the Future II, here's an update on an Australian guy who claims he's close to completing the world's first hoverbike. No, it's not a hoverboard (though some have already tried to create one of those), but it looks to be the closest we've come so far to re-creating Bttf II technology that you may actually be able to purchase and use, according to creator Chris Malloy. Malloy claims the bike will be able to travel upwards of 170 mph, and can go as high as 10,000 feet (though you'll need oxygen, a parachute and God as a co-pilot). We know you have more questions, so here's a little from Malloy's Faq...

180° South
Starring Jeff Johnson, Yvon Chouinard, and Doug Tompkins
Directed by Chris Malloy
Rated PG
No disrespect meant, but 180° South might be better off as a coffee table book. The new documentary about one man's journey of self-discovery through central America all the way down to Patagonia at the southernmost tip of South America is a little too sprawling for a film narrative, even though it only clocks in at about 90 minutes.
That could be the problem: Jeff Johnson's story might be more interesting if it had more time to stew, but fitting in hundreds of days on the same quest in less than an hour and a half speeds up a very meditative process.
Johnson retraces a similar famous trek from the 1960s, one that launched modern conservationism in that part of the world and eventually was the seedling for the Patagonia clothing company, one of the largest outdoor outfitters in the world.

Passed the Door of Darkness is another Echo Bridge Entertainment release that will be displayed on DVD shelves April 27th. This title is also a Darc Light production like The Fear Chamber and the film is reviewed here. Passed the Door of Darkness lives up to the Darc Light name by keeping the first third of the film in complete darkness. This Peter Mervis endeavour feels incomplete despite a compelling story. Ultimately, Passed the Door of Darkness cannot be promoted as a quality film due to technical errors.
This reviewer almost turned the film off twenty minutes in as the picture was in complete shadows. However, patience kicked in and thankfully thirty minutes later Mervis had turned the lights on. Yet, many others will not be as patient with the film. Although, Passed the Door of Darkness recovers from these early technical faults in lighting,...
