Inside MPTF’s Evening Before Benefit with Stars of ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Abbott Elementary’
Who doesn’t love a group photo packed with big-name actors?
A slew of stars came together to say cheese and help raise north of $2.5 million in West Hollywood on Saturday night at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 17th annual Evening Before benefit. Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

“Jury Duty” is a reality show. Or is it a sitcom? A documentary? An elaborate prank?
How about all of the above?
One of 2023’s defining breakouts, the Amazon Freevee series is the crown jewel of an ascendant hybrid genre sometimes referred to as docu-comedy. Even the people who made the show aren’t sure how to classify it. Director Jake Syzmanski and co-creator Lee Eisenberg say they’ve never heard that term. Eisenberg suggested hidden-camera comedy, but that’s not really accurate either, as everyone involved knew they were being filmed. Robyn Adams, a producer, used “outlined improv.” Whatever nomenclature best applies, this increasingly common format has enjoyed a banner year, with “Jury Duty,” Peacock’s “Paul T. Goldman,” BBC and Netflix’s “Cunk on Earth,” and HBO’s “How To with John Wilson” picking up where the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen and Nathan Fielder left off.

Ronald Gladden, the unwitting star of this year’s surprise breakout docu-comedy hit “Jury Duty,” has signed a two-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios to produce, develop and star in a variety of content – a turn of events as implausible as his growing fame.
Gladden was the good-natured, game-for-anything young contractor who unknowingly answered a Craigslist ad looking for someone to participate in a documentary about jury service. He instead became the unwitting dupe in a situation comedy on which he was the only person who wasn’t an actor and wasn’t in on the ruse. Through the eight “Jury Duty” episodes, the audience followed Gladden’s selection onto the purported jury for a fake court case and his building incredulity at all of the weird situations and oddball characters surrounding him as the hoax trial moved forward. The show became a giant hit for Amazon Freevee and earned four Emmy Award nominations,...

“Jury Duty” star Ronald Gladden has signed an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has learned.
Under the two-year deal, Gladden will work with the studio to produce, develop, and star in content across platforms.
“Words cannot express how excited I am to officially be a part of the Amazon family,” said Gladden. “’Jury Duty’ was a remarkable experience for me, and one that introduced me to so many creative and inspiring people. I’m now looking forward to utilizing those new relationships to develop projects for Amazon MGM Studios.”
Gladden was working as a solar contractor in San Diego before he became the (unwitting) star of the Freevee comedy series “Jury Duty.” Gladden believed he was selected to serve on the jury, unaware that everyone else involved in the “trial” was an actor and that the whole thing was a hoax.

Ronald Gladden’s star continues to rise in Hollywood, following his achievements on the surprise hit series Jury Duty, a top-secret docu-style comedy created by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. He has signed a two-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios to produce, develop, and star in a variety of content.
Gladden unknowingly made his TV debut in the Amazon Freevee project he believed was taking part in a docuseries chronicling the inner workings of an American jury trial. Everyone working on Jury Duty was aware they were involved in a fake court case except for Gladden, who up until his casting was a solar contractor originally from Oregon.

Months after scoring his first Emmy notice for playing a fictionalized version of himself on “Jury Duty,” James Marsden is seeking recognition from the Screen Actors Guild for the same meta performance. Since he is, of course, eligible as both a solo actor and cast member, his lifetime SAG Award nominations total could soon rise to seven, with this possibly being his third Best TV Comedy Ensemble outing. Based on the fact that his previous two bids came for his work on as many programs, he now has a strong shot at blazing a trail as the first man to earn SAG ensemble mentions for three different comedy series.
According to Gold Derby’s 2024 SAG Awards odds, the actors from “Jury Duty” are comfortably ranked fifth in the comedy ensemble race with the support of 60% of our prognosticating users. On the Amazon Freevee original, Marsden ostensibly acts as a Los...

I remember going to the movie theater in 1998 to see “The Truman Show” for the first time and being blown away. It was the scariest non-horror film I’d ever seen up to that point (and maybe still), showing us a world of utter consumerism and commodification and its horrific impact on a man who didn’t know he was born to literally be a reality show. It seemed inconceivable that something like what happens to Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) could really occur. This was, after all, the era before we started carrying around smartphones and mini computers in our pocket, before anything called Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and years before even MySpace came into being – and before we were all deputized as amateur filmmakers thanks to the still camera and video we keep with us and use to publish sometimes hourly.

Though his long career has been full of box office hits, critically acclaimed projects and some truly scene-stealing performances, James Marsden landed the role of a lifetime on the Amazon Freevee series “Jury Duty” playing … James Marsden.
It is, however, an exaggerated (we hope) version of himself, due to the premise of the show — that everyone taking part in a fake trial is an actor in on the joke except for “star” Ronald Gladden. Marsden shines as a self-centered actor convinced that he deserves special treatment while simultaneously bemoaning his fame isn’t remarkable enough. In one tantrum, he screams, “Let’s all feel sorry for the guy from ‘The Notebook,’ who’s not even the guy from ‘The Notebook!’”
It’s a tricky balance — and add to it the fact that Marsden is improvising without scripted lines and finding himself in situations he has no way of predicting.

This past spring, social media lit up around a very new kind of American Sweetheart: 30-year-old Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor who believed he was signing up for a documentary on the jury system and instead ended up being the adored lead presence of Amazon Freevee’s fish-out-of-water comedy “Jury Duty.” Gladden answered a Craigslist ad, the producers took a shine to him, and history was made.
“So, I wasn’t part of the Ronald process,” Emmy-nominated casting director Susie Farris told TheWrap. “Ronald is a real person, and I don’t cast reality. [Laughs] But you know, obviously, the crazy part about the show is that every single person except for one is an actor.”
And that’s what made “Jury Duty” one of the year’s most singular TV challenges: casting buoyant, quick-witted, versatile actors that the general public would not recognize to improvise against Gladden as his fellow jurors,...

Cody Heller admits she was terrified when she began production on the mockumentary series Jury Duty, which features a cast of actors putting on a fictional civil trial in which one single member of the jury is a non-actor — an everyman named Ronald Gladden — who is unaware that everything around him is completely fake. Over the course of three weeks, Heller ran an experimental production in which much of what happens onscreen was designed to follow Gladden as he serves as the jury’s foreman while sequestered with a motley crew of personalities of varying extremes — including Hollywood actor James Marsden, who earned an Emmy nomination for his supporting turn as a heightened version of himself.
Heller spoke with THR to break down how the series found its hero in Gladden, what extensive preparation was needed to pull off the production and why the end result restored her faith in humanity.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we consider revisit comedy and consider the win potential of surprise nominee “Jury Duty.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, and we’ve finally got a date for the 2023 Emmys. In keeping with Hollywood’s year of questionable decisions, the ceremony will take place in 2024 — on January 15, to be exact. It’s just as we predicted and had hoped against. Better still, the 2023 Emmys (2024 Edition) will occur eight days after the 2024 Golden Globes and one day after the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. Those groups will hand out television awards for shows that aired in 2023, which means the Emmys will feel like a period piece. On July 12, 2023 we witnessed a true act of justice. “Jury Duty,” the Amazon Freevee cinéma vérité-style sitcom from creators Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (“The Office”) swiped four Emmy nominations including Best Comedy Series. Despite a disclaimer stating the exploration of the American judicial process is its primary goal, “Jury Duty” ends up achieving so much more. But can it pull off an Emmy upset?
The comedy category is a tricky one. Voters love to follow the multiple-winner trend. However, in recent years the TV academy has also shown an interest in going off-book by awarding more under-the-radar shows like “Fleabag” in 2019. “Jury Duty” could play that role this year, attracting voters who live in a generation that thrives on the drama of reality TV and bathes in the comfort of sitcoms. It successfully weaves the two genres with hilarious results. Viewers were glued to the screen with a great skeleton script,...

Dave Bernad won an Emmy Award last year for producing HBO’s “The White Lotus” in the limited series category. He’s back this year with his second nomination for that show, only now it’s in the drama race. He also has another producing bid for Amazon Freevee’s comedy series “Jury Duty,” which puts him in a small group of people to be nominated for a drama and a comedy in the same year. Bernad is “incredibly fortunate and appreciative for the love,” he tells me. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The producers of “Jury Duty” found Ronald Gladden — the jury foreman unaware that an entire fictional trial was put on for his benefit — via Craigslist. But everyone else in the courtroom was cast through a scripted process, albeit not one that casting director Susie Farris ever used before.
The unconventional hybrid nature of “Jury Duty” led Farris and the show’s producers down a very life-meets-art path to find gifted improvisers who could hit the level of absurdity the show demanded without making Gladden suspicious. Farris began with self-tapes, partly because of Covid-19 restrictions and partly because, in this particular case, improvising a confessional to camera would more accurately reflect the job than reading sides.
“Don’t get me wrong, I really miss the in-person interaction. There’s really nothing like that,” Farris said. “But for this type of thing, [the actors weren’t] having to read lines. They could choose one of the two prompts,...

When the genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” launched its eight-episode run in April, Emmy nominations were the farthest thing from anyone’s mind. Of greater concern was simply having people know it was available at all, given that it was available on the little-known Amazon Freevee streaming service. “Actually, it was a blessing and a curse because it was such a crazy experimental undertaking,” admits Cody Heller, “Jury Duty’s” showrunner and executive producer. “There were moments where I was like, ‘Ok, if the show blows up and fails, at least no one will probably see it.’ But then once we finished it and we were all so proud of the work we’d done, we were like, ‘Oh man, I hope people watch it.'” Added fellow exec producer Nicholas Hatton: “To know that people have received the show in the spirit in which we intended has been beyond rewarding.

Busting into a secret club is never easy, especially for Alex Walker (Christian Kane) and Ernesto Alamares (Arthur Acuña) in Amazon Freevee’s series Almost Paradise Season 2.
Ernesto thinks he’s found a way to infiltrate a secret club, but is he really being sly, or does his plan have flaws – especially when he and Alex are being billed as an “act.”
In an exclusive clip of an upcoming episode, Ernesto confidently says he, Alex, and Kai Mendoza (Samantha Richelle) were invited to the club. Presenting a special chip seems to soften the defensive club owner – but does it?

When the club owner asks for names, he stops and says, “Don’t answer that, it doesn’t matter! And I don’t wanna know.”
After a quick inspection, the club owner says, “I can see the potential. I can bill the two of you as a double act.

After a successful post-pandemic return in 2022, San Diego Comic-Con will hold a much quieter event for 2023, which runs from July 20-23. In June, with possibility of SAG-AFTRA joining the WGA on the picket lines — as well as the success of other focused fan events (like Star Wars Celebration and Tudum) — several major players decided to sit out this year’s convention before the schedule had even been announced, including Marvel, Lucasfilm, HBO, Universal, Sony and Netflix. By the time Sdcc announced the schedule in early July, Warner Bros. had also elected to be absent this year, despite upcoming DC projects like “Blue Beetle” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”
Some studios and productions, however, did announce major panels in the hope that SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP would strike a deal in time for the convention — which didn’t happen. SAG-AFTRA is now on strike, less than a week before Sdcc is set to begin,...

San Diego Comic-Con is going to be a little different this year. Many studios had already dropped out of presenting, including Marvel, Sony, HBO, Universal, and Netflix, and now that SAG-AFTRA has joined the WGA on the picket lines, you can pretty much kiss any panel involving writers or actors goodbye. The official Comic-Con schedule has been updated with a list of cancelled panels, which unfortunately includes Dune: Part Two, The Boys spin-off series Gen V, Amazon’s The Wheel of Time, Lionsgate’s upcoming The Strangers trilogy, and more.

Amazon Studios’ 2023 Emmy performance is probably best encapsulated by the Outstanding Comedy Series category. There is the veteran, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which years ago landed Prime Video’s first Best Series Emmy win. It is ending its five-season run in style with 14 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
There is the upstart, surprise Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Jury Duty which put Amazon’s up-and-coming AVOD platform Freevee on the awards map with four total noms, breaking new ground for ad-supported streamers.
And then there is Netflix’s Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Wednesday, produced by MGM, which has been fully integrated into Amazon Studios following the venerable Hollywood studios’ acquisition by Amazon.
The combined Amazon MGM Studios scored 68 Primetime Emmy nominations today, including nine for Daisy Jones & The Six, six (all in crafts categories) for the The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) and three for Swarm.

It was a big win for the underdog on Wednesday as Freevee’s Jury Duty was nominated for four Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Supporting Actor for James Marsden, Writing for Mekki Leeper and Casting for Susie Farris.
Although completely unexpected, the surprise was obviously welcome by executive producer David Bernad, who spoke to Deadline about the momentous occasion.
“I give an incredible amount of credit to the writers, Cody Heller, Andrew Weinberg, Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky; Nick Hatton, one of our incredible producers; the cast who were all exceptional obviously James, and everyone else in the cast who really dedicated so much of their life to the show. They all deserve this award,” Bernad, also a producer on HBO’s The White Lotus and NBC’s Superstore, to name a few, told Deadline.
However, the moment is bittersweet for the producer as the WGA strike is on its...

Months after “Jury Duty” unexpectedly stole America’s heart, the Amazon Freevee continued bucking its underdog status by landing four primetime Emmy nominations, a success EP Dave Bernad attributes to the show’s uplifting moments of humanity.
“As we went into Covid, we were in a dark time and the idea was trying to make something hopeful, and specifically part funny that had heart and, most importantly, that highlighted the hero’s journey and the wonderful humanity [that’s] out there,” Bernad told TheWrap. “I think maybe that’s what people responded to in the show, especially in this moment.”
The series nabbed two big scores for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for James Marsden, as well as nominations for Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series, cementing Amazon Freevee as first free AVOD service to receive a major series Primetime Emmy nomination.

The Little Show That Could did on Wednesday morning as the Amazon Freevee word-of-mouth sensation “Jury Duty” completed the most improbable run for top comedy series in recent memory (if not ever) by landing a spot among the big boys and girls – becoming the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season. Moreover, its its “star” James Marsden generated an equally surprising achievement with a supporting comedy actor nod today.
As recently as late June, “Jury Duty” stood 17th in the Gold Derby combined odds for top comedy series at 100/1. Its final odds placed at only 13th, still at 100/1. But the show that premiered in April on a streaming service few had even heard of made waves even immediately and kept right on making them through this wildly unlikely grassroots Emmy run. It was described as the world’s first feelgood prank show – “The Office” meets “The Truman Show.” The premise: A...

On “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” Teresa Giudice has long endeared herself to audiences through her brash personality, lack of filter and infamous New Jersey accent
But these days, Giudice’s most memorable lines might not be aired to millions on Bravo but to a select few on Cameo, where she sells personalized videos for $250 a pop. Although Giudice has been on Cameo for more than a year, joining the more than 40,000 celebrities on the platform, people on Twitter have only recently taken note of her hilarious custom videos, which all showcase her lovable authenticity — no editing team necessary.

With too much television, viewing every piece of content that is up for consideration for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations is impossible. With 163 drama series, 95 comedies, 51 limited or anthologies and 61 television movies, every TV-goer has their tastes.
Variety staffers have come together to curate its own dream Primetime Emmys ballot, with voting set to close at 10 p.m. Pt tonight.
However, it should be noted — we love consistency, especially in TV land.
With our selections, we want to continue to promote (and advocate) for the Television Academy to allow 10 nominees in the top series categories. In addition, we would love to see uniformity in the acting races or a performer felt like a leading entry as opposed to a supporting, then we recognized as such. We also combined all of the reality, variety and documentary into each of their respective races. Not every type of show needs its own category.

Viral comedy sensation “Jury Duty,” is an Amazon Freevee original comedy series that follows 29-year-old man Ronald Gladden as he is appointed juror in a civil trial alongside 15 others. What he doesn’t know, however, is that the trial is fake, and that his fellow jurors, the judge, even the security guards… they’re are all actors.
One of Ronald’s fellow fake jurors is James Marsden, who plays a satirical version of himself in the show. Some may believe being yourself to be an easy task, but what Marsden pulls off in “Jury Duty” eclipses the entire field this year in terms of difficulty. And it’s for this reason he could land an Emmy nomination this year in Comedy Supporting Actor.
The fabricated realism of “Jury Duty” meant that while everything was actually a satirical TV show, Marsden and the other actors had to make it seem to...

When the list of potential Emmy nominees was officially released on Thursday, the Amazon Freevee genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” listed six submissions for Emmy Awards comedy supporting actor and actress: James Marsden, David Brown, Susan Berger, Cassandra Blair, Edy Modica and Rashida Olayiwola. That may not seem particularly significant, but for a series that seemingly against all odds caught hold of the zeitgeist this past spring, it’s massive. The craziest part is that it actually has a chance of pulling in an Emmy nom or two – perhaps even in comedy series and (maybe especially) comedy series casting for its casting director Susie Farris.
In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that “Jury Duty” is going to be the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season and shock the awards world as a grassroots phenomenon by cracking the best comedy nominee lineup. And it...
