With his Instagram posts of old Thrasher magazine covers, flyers of seminal post-hardcore group Jawbox, and pictures with Neko Case, Matt Jencik is not your stereotypical Taylor Swift target. The 50-year-old, long-haired, bespectacled longtime buyer for Chicago’s legendary Reckless Records admits he’d probably be listening to Van Halen at home. But in records stores like Reckless and around the country, things have changed drastically.

Dexter Romweber, the musician who founded the pioneering guitar-and-drums duo Flat Duo Jets, later inspiring the likes of The White Stripes and countless other lo-fi acts, has died. He was 57 years old.
Romweber’s death was announced via a statement posted by his family on Facebook, which revealed that had died at home on Friday, February 16th, and though “a medical exam is pending,” it is “believed he died of natural causes.”
Born on June 18th, 1966, in Indiana, Romweber got involved in music at an early age, forming his first band when he was 10. By the time he was attending high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the ‘70s, he began performing with drummer Chris “Crow” Smith. In 1983, the two formed Flat Duo Jets, a rip-roaring psychobilly duo that harnessed the electrifying interplay of Romweber’s guitar playing and stage prowess with Smith’s thunderous drumming.

M. Ward has announced his new album Supernatural Thing, which is set to release on June 23rd. As a preview, he’s released the record’s title track.
The album is Ward’s first in three years and features contributions from Neko Case, First Aid Kit, Jim James, Kelly Pratt, Shovels & Rope, and Scott McMicken. It also includes two covers — one of David Bowie’s “I Can’t Give Everything Away” from his final album Blackstar, and a live recording of Daniel Johnston’s “Story of an Artist.”
“Supernatural Thing” as a single is an acoustic guitar-driven ditty with a jovial atmosphere, based on a message that came to Ward in a dream by none other than Elvis — “You can go anywhere you please.”
“Well, all my songs depend on dream imagery to some extent,” Ward said in a press release. “This was an actual dream I had about Elvis...

Garth Hudson, co-founder of The Band, played a rare set at a New York house party this week.
Hudson attended a house concert hosted by the musician and fellow keyboardist Sarah Perrotta. In a clip shared by Perotta, the 85-year-old Hudson is seen playing Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” on piano from his wheelchair, marking his first public performance since 2018. Check it out below.
Like the rest of The Band, Hudson got his start as a member of The Hawks, the backing band for Toronto rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. After outgrowing Hawkins, the group joined Bob Dylan for his 1965 and 1966 tours, the latter known as the “electric tour.” At the time, Hudson was one of the few organists in rock and roll to play an electric Hammond organ. The Hawks joined Dylan on a number of recording sessions, though few official tracks from this period were released. They did, however,...

Over the course of their 20-plus-year career, the New Pornographers have often specialized in catchy ambiguity. If leader Carl Newman was just a machine cranking out power-pop tunes, it would get boring. But there’s also a lot of mixed emotions going on under the surface of their studiously nuanced pop-rock formalism — like if Cheap Trick was as quick-witted as Steely Dan, or the Romantics were as throughtful as Rem. The Canadian band’s iconic 2000 debut, Mass Romantic, was a masterclass in hook-mad fun highlighted by songs with resolutely unfun...

Amanda Seyfried Confirms Broadway Musical Plans With Evan Rachel Wood Amid ‘Thelma & Louise’ Reports
The Dropout star Amanda Seyfried appears to have confirmed she’s working on a Broadway-bound musical with Westworld‘s Evan Rachel Wood amid reports that the duo are workshopping a stage adaptation of the 1991 film Thelma & Louise.
The movie starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as pair of friends on the run from the law.
In a red carpet interview with E! News at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Seyfried said, “I wanna go to Broadway. I wanna sing, and I think I’m finally getting to that point where it’s gonna happen.” She added, “You should hear Evan Rachel Wood sing. My god.”
Deadline’s sister publication Variety first reported the Thelma & Louise project after actor Mo Brings Plenty accepted a Globe on behalf of the absent Seyfried and said she was “deep in the process of creating a new musical.”

Amanda Seyfried is working on a major musical with Evan Rachel Wood, and now speculation has turned to it being an adaptation of the 1991 movie Thelma & Louise.
Amanda Seyfried was one of a handful of winners at the 80th Golden Globe Awards who was unable to attend. Seyfried–who won Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film for the Hulu series The Dropout, in which she played controversial Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes–however, had a good reason for being absent from the ceremony. According to the presenters, Seyfried was “deep in the process of creating a new musical.” But it’s not a revival of the Mean Girls musical or even more Mamma Mia!, as Seyfried is reportedly workshopping a musical version of Thelma & Louise.

Amanda Seyfried missed the Golden Globes because she was involved in a workshop of musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise, a rep for the show confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday.
The musical, which was in early stages of development in 2021, is being adapted for the stage, the rep said. Evan Rachel Wood is also said to be involved in the workshop. Her reps did not reply to a request for comment from THR as of press time.
Variety first reported news of Seyfried and Wood’s involvement in the project.
In June 2021, Thelma & Louise screenwriter Callie Khouri told THR about the “very early stages” of development for the musical. Khouri said the musical had director Trip Cullman (who has directed Choir Boy, Lobby Hero and more on Broadway) attached, a score by indie singer-songwriter Neko Case and a script by Halley Feiffer, an actress and playwright who...

Amanda Seyfried is achieving her dream of being on the Great White Way.
The “Dropout” Emmy winner caused waves after it was announced she was unable to attend the Golden Globes (where she also picked up a Best Actress win) due to being “deep in the process of creating a new musical.” Variety reported that the production is a musical adaptation of Oscar-winning film “Thelma & Louise.”
Evan Rachel Wood is also being eyed to join the musical, but no official casting announcement has been made yet.

If you like gorgeous gals, movie musicals, and stories of road-trip revenge, then I have the best news in the entire world, just for you: Variety reports that Amanda Seyfried and Evan Rachel Wood are working on a musical version of the 1991 Ridley Scott classic "Thelma & Louise." Both performers have shown their skills in musicals before, with Seyfried starring in the Abba musical "Mamma Mia!" and its sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again," along with the movie version of the "Les Misérables" stage musical, while Wood performed the songs of The Beatles in Julie Taymor's underrated 2007 film "Across the Universe." These two have the vocal skills to tackle a musical and they're both phenomenal actors who will be able to have a blast playing best friends on the run from the law.

Amanda Seyfried and Evan Rachel Wood Workshopping a ‘Thelma & Louise’ Musical Adaptation (Exclusive)
When Amanda Seyfried won a Golden Globe on Tuesday night, she wasn’t in the Beverly Hills ballroom due to being “deep in the process of creating a new musical” — and now we may know what that is. Insiders tell Variety that Seyfried is involved with a workshop on the musical version of “Thelma & Louise.” There’s also talk that Evan Rachel Wood has joined Seyfried in the project.
A “Thelma & Louise” musical has been in the works since at least 2021 with the film’s screenwriter, Callie Khouri, attached, as well as indie singer/songwriter Neko Case creating the score and Haley Feiffer (“Dear Edward”) writing the book.
Reports in 2021 noted that theatre director Trip Cullman (“Six Degrees of Separation”) was also on board to helm the musical adaptation of the iconic 1991 film, which starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, and won Khouri the Oscar for best writing,...

When Roky Erickson’s 1981 cult classic album The Evil One was rereleased in 1987, it opened with the skronky “Two-Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer),” a song loosely inspired by the believe-it-or-not head-transplant experiments conducted by a Soviet surgeon in the Fifties. Over a snaking electric guitar lead, Erickson howled about “working in the Kremlin with a two-headed dog.”

Metaphorically and otherwise, things are falling down everywhere on the New Pornographers eighth LP: statues (“Colossus of Rhodes”), lovers (“Falling Down The Stairs of Your Smile”), performance conventions (“the 4th wall is falling on us” chime the worried singers on “Need Some Giants”), and especially people’s spirits — like the dude “in the parking lot of a dead mall” who closes out the album, as a pair of empathetic but shrugging guardian angels harmonize on the phrase “fallin’ into harm” (“Leather On The Seat”).

There’s a massive, mostly empty room at the center of Wynonna Judd’s house with a large picture window that looks out across her farm south of Nashville. The view from the only chair in the room, which Wynonna calls her “prayer chair,” is a serene pasture and pond. The high, vaulted ceilings make singing in that room an acoustic dream, with the bare walls providing natural reverb.
This is where Wynonna recorded her a cappella performance of the standard “Feeling Good” (premiering today), and it all just happened...

Why would Butthole Surfers want to make a coffee table book to recount their history? Frontman Gibby Haynes’ answer is typically bizarre: “We’re all history buffs. We drink coffee. We like tables. Personally, I’m a big fan of the Cherner oval dining table. And the book wasn’t our idea.”
The limited-edition, 300-page Butthole Surfers: What Does Regret Mean, written by author Aaron Tanner, will come out on March 8th and contain photos, flyers, illustrations and clippings from throughout the group’s nearly 40-year history. It’s available for pre-order now.

Neko Case meditates on the colossal damage human beings have wreaked on Earth – from environmental devastation to animal extinction – with her profound “Last Lion of Albion” video.
Using handcrafted puppets and props, director Laura Plansker frames the clip around the tearjerking journey of the titular lion, who glides through a stream and gazes out at the remnants of our natural world: roses, waterfalls, butterflies, frogs, squirrels, rabbits and birds. Humans, meanwhile, send a rocket to Mars.

With “Conan” set to switch to a half-hour format beginning in January 2019, the TBS show is doing away with regular musical performances to focus more on comedy and what host Conan O’Brien calls a “leaner” late-night program.
With that change, producer and music booker Roey Hershkovitz will depart the show, leaving the door open for consulting work on the occasional special music episode and potential music content to appear on TeamCoco.com’s digital platforms.
Hershkovitz has been with the “Conan” franchise for nearly 20 years. Beginning as an intern in 1999, he was hired as music coordinator at NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in May 2000 and moved with the show to TBS in 2010. Hershkovitz, who has also co-produced episodes of NBC’s “The Office,” was elevated to Music Booker in 2017 after “Conan” veteran Jim Pitt left for ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Neko Case’s anthropomorphic, animated genitals enjoy a corndog with Mark Lanegan’s top hat-adorned penis in the new video for “Curse of the I-5 Corridor.” The song appears on Case’s seventh solo LP Hell-On, which Rolling Stone named one of the 50 Best Albums of 2018 So Far.
The comedic clip opens with Case and Lanegan undressing in a bedroom to bare their animated saggy, hairy chests. The Screaming Trees singer shows her his cartoon erection. The pair kiss and lay in bed while their private parts dip a corn...

On their debut LP, this fantastic L.A. band envelops singer Natalie Carol’s bracingly afflicted, mountain-vaulting dream-country yodel in scrappy, sprawling guitar poetry. Carol can evoke anyone from Grace Slick to to Neko Case to Florence Welch to Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries, giving the band’s California roots sound a kind of storm clouds-over-Laurel Canyon feel. “Chasing the Muse” is the weepy, earthen banger, with echoes of Nineties Radiohead in the stalactite guitars and Carol powering through a breakup with raw-boned gusto; “Supergiant” is fuzzed-up power-pop,...

Bad Religion guitarist and Epitaph Records founder Brett Gurewitz will receive A2IM’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization’s Libera Awards ceremony on June 21, it announced today.
While the band, which he cofounded in 1980, is one of the most influential punk bands of its era, the label — along with its sister labels, Anti-, Burning Heart, Fat Possum, and Hellcat — has arguably had an even greater impact, helping to spawn acts like The Offspring, Rancid, Pennywise and Nofx, among many others; the Anti- label’s roster includes Tom Waits, Mavis Staples, Tinariwen and Neko Case.
“I’m humbled and honored to receive a Libera Award from my indie colleagues at A2IM and grateful for their advocacy of independent artists and labels,” said Gurewitz.

Alt-country-whatever songstress Neko Case has dropped the first single from her forthcoming album, “Hell-On,” and both the song and the album’s title are evocative: According to a press release announcing the song, Case was nearly finished recording the album when she received a 3 a.m. phone call telling her that her house was on fire and would likely be completely destroyed. A friend saved her dogs but the house was toast.
A few hours later, she went into a studio in Stockholm and laid down the vocals for “Bad Luck,” singing lyrics that she had written long before that were now sadly appropriate: “It’s not as bad as I thought it would be / But it’s still pretty bad luck.”
Still, she put her misfortune into perspective: Around the time of the fire, hurricanes had devastated Texas and Puerto Rico and wildfires scorched California. “In the big picture,...

Louis C.K. is the latest entertainment figure to be accused of sexual misconduct, with several women telling the New York Times that the actor, comedian, and filmmaker masturbated in front of them. The premiere of C.K.’s new movie “I Love You, Daddy” was canceled in advance of the Nyt story, as was his appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” Several have already reacted on social media:

SXSW has diversified its interests over recent years, and the world of television is no exception to that. This year’s most exciting moments include exclusive world premieres, panel conversations, escape rooms and a pop-up chicken restaurant. If you’re not going, there’s plenty to envy — and if you will be in attendance, you owe it to the world to share as much as you can on social media.

There’s a bothersome element to films about fictional musicians: the quality of the original songs, and the suspension of disbelief required – scratch that, demanded – to buy them as listenable. In the 2010 comedy Get Him to the Greek, it’s impossible to believe that Jonah Hill’s record company rep, a guy whose tastes run from iconic punk to Mars Volta, would ever jam to the hokey, generic drivel produced by Russell Brand’s fading rocker. Then there’s the notorious “Sugar High” finale in Empire Records, the Led Zeppelin knock-offs by the Almost Famous band Stillwater, and Ethan Hawke’s awful grunge snarling in Reality Bites. (Is it me, or was this sin disproportionately committed in the 1990s?)
