Kristie Macosko Krieger, one of the producers for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” says there was no way they could have pulled off shooting the 20th Century Studios remake without the aesthetic backdrop and financial incentives that the state of New Jersey provided. “We looked all around, and Paterson, N.J. gave a grit and an authenticity to the film that I don’t think we could have gotten anywhere else,” Krieger tells Variety. “They treated us like family, and that felt important since we were making a movie that was special to them and us.”

8th Update, Wednesday, 4:30 Pm Pt: Some good news for Democrats after an otherwise dismal off-year election night, as Phil Murphy was projected to win reelection as governor of New Jersey.
But his race against Republican Jack Ciattarelli was unexpectedly tight. Murphy was ahead by less than 1 percentage point when the Associated Press called the race on Wednesday afternoon.
Murphy is the first Democratic governor re-elected in more than 40 years in New Jersey. The last Democratic governor, Jon Corzine, was defeated by Chris Christie in 2009.
Meanwhile, some entertainment industry figures reacted to the Democrats’ disappointing results with a mixture of bewilderment, anger and resolve.
Rob Reiner tweeted, “No time for hand wringing and over analyzing Virginia. Pass Infrastructure and Build Back Better. Then focus like a laser on Voting Rights.”
Cher wrote, in all caps, “Joe Works Tirelessly 2 Work With Cong,& Pass Bills 2 Help Every Day Americans,& He’S Hit From Dems On Right,...

Bruce Springsteen has been an outspoken advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) rights for some time, but now "The Boss" has gone a step further by starring in a social media push for marriage equality.
The 63-year-old rocker is the star of a new campaign by The Four 2012, which is focused on passing same-sex marriage ballot measures in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington this November.
After quoting former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine's earlier description of marriage equality as "a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law," Springsteen notes in the ad, "I couldn't agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now."

Washington — President Barack Obama's re-election campaign identified its top fundraisers on Tuesday, including 61 people who each raised at least half a million dollars. Altogether, the more than 440 fundraisers collected at least $75 million to help Obama win a second term.
Among them are embattled former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine. Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee late last year returned $70,000 in contributions from Corzine and his wife following questions about the collapse of Mf Global, the financial firm Corzine ran.
Corzine is no longer raising money for the re-election, campaign officials said.
The campaign divided the list into four groups based on how much money donors raised: $50,000-$100,000, $100,000-$200,000, $200,000 to $500,000 and those who raised more than $500,000 apiece.
The donors represent a broad network of contributors, many of them longtime Democratic Party stalwarts.

Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing" was one of NBC's most prestigious and successful shows over the past two decades, following the ins and outs of the political and interpersonal drama inside the White House. Now, the network will try to repeat the magic with a comedic look at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Jon Lovett, who spent three years as a speechwriter for President Obama, recently sold NBC a pilot for "1600," which will depict a dysfunctional first family. He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the series, insisting that, first and foremost, the show won't actually be about the Obama family.
"Obviously, my experiences are going to inform what I do, but this family will have absolutely nothing to do with the president," he said. "The idea is that this is a dysfunctional family, and the first family today is so far from that, it's ridiculous."

Jon Stewart provided a breather today from a day full of Herman Cain sex scandal developments with a long roast of former New Jersey Senator and Governor and Goldman Sachs CEO Jon Corzine-- or, in his words, the one man who "could embody the corporate/industrial/government complex in all its clusterf*ckitude." Corzine, who is now nursing the injury of the collapse of his investment firm Mf Global, put most of the money on European debt, which Stewart found, at best, hilarious.

A massive new history of Goldman Sachs fails to ask serious, important questions about the firm, says Nomi Prins-and just continues a troubling trend of adulation.
I started at Goldman Sachs after a nine-month interview process. A few months later, I got some advice from a former partner, who then ran the mortgage department: "Don't worry about how much time you spend with clients. If you want to do well here, remember that senior management are your real clients."

That's the firm I knew, and unfortunately for all us, seems to be the reporting strategy that William Cohan pursued in churning out his new Goldman history, Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World, that pulls off the seemingly difficult feat of being both incredibly windy and exhausting (nearly 700 pages!) yet completely non-illuminating.
Cohan heavily touts his access to the big boys.

Steve Friedman’s decision to quit as chairman of Goldman Sachs, in 1994, during one of its darkest hours, stunned and angered his partners. And despite Friedman’s maneuverings, it created a leadership crisis as the mismatched team of Jon Corzine (future New Jersey governor) and Henry Paulson (future Treasury secretary) took the helm. In an adaptation from his book on Goldman, William D. Cohan reveals how secret merger discussions put the expansive trader and the hardheaded banker on a collision course, setting the stage for the firm it would soon become.

He reveals here for the first time that in 1998 Corzine initiated talks about a merger with Frank Cahouet, C.E.O. of Mellon Bank, without informing Paulson or the Goldman Management Committee, a “major political misstep” that Paulson used to his advantage.

"The Real Housewives of New Jersey's" Caroline Manzo is pretty used to controversy, but it's her husband, businessman Albert Manzo, who's finding himself in the middle of a storm right now.

The New Jersey governor claims he knows he "could win" the White House in 2012, but he's not "ready to be president." Andrew Romano on why Christie isn't insane-though he shouldn't read much into early polls.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie isn't known for being demure. Since defeating incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine in 2009, he's blustered, bellowed, and bullied his way into the hearts of conservatives nationwide, berating every schoolteacher or union boss who has had the temerity to cross him-especially if his staff is filming the encounter for YouTube.

In a speech to the Aei in D.C., the New Jersey governor charms his audience, pushing frugality, pressing his vision of change, and skewering Obama. But he's still not running for president, writes Eleanor Clift.
Leadership is about doing big things, says New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who invoked the phrase in his State of the State address-some two weeks before President Obama voiced the same words to rally the country in his State of the Union address.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Obama's Head-in-the Sand Budget
Not that Christie thinks Obama stole his line, but the two men have different visions of what constitutes big things. Christie is focusing on budget reform, pension and health reform, and education reform, although "reform" is a euphemistic word for cutbacks. He's convinced the mood has changed enough in the country that the politicians who take on these once-sacred cows will be rewarded.

The New Jersey governor's race is already one of the dirtiest and most bizarre campaigns imaginable. Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine should be coasting to re-election in a state that is largely liberal and largely Democratic. However, Corzine is fighting for his political life despite having virtually unlimited funds from his personal fortune to throw into his campaign. He has also had the benefit of several high profile campaign appearances by President Obama, who is extremely popular in this state. His main rival, Republican Chris Christie, a former Us Attorney, can't take much comfort, either. Despite running against a very unpopular incumbent, the best he has been able to do is draw even in the polls . (The election is Tuesday). Christie gave the mortgage loan to Brown in 2007, when he was Us Attorney in the office and she was first assistant.

This is why it is particularly upsetting that Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey is reportedly considering tapping the winner of the fourth season of The Apprentice to be his running mate as lieutenant governor.
