There have been numerous interweaving and not so interweaving plots during this inaugural season of "Penny Dreadful," but there have been two constants. The first has been the search by Sir Malcom (Timothy Dalton) and Ms. Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) to save Mina (Olivia Llewellyn) from the clutches of a vampire demon. The second has been the systematic haunting of Doctor Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway, Jr.) by his first creation (Rory Kinnear), a vindictive son who brutally demands a bride from his creator. If the series finale told us anything it's that creator John Logan had no intention of dragging these story lines out any more than necessary. More so, Logan appears to have a lot more in store for "Dreadful's" unexpected group of flawed "heroes." Two of the series' best performances have been from Green and Dalton. Their characters have behaved like two adversaries forced to grit their teeth...

This week, Penny Dreadful takes a step back from the main storyline to finally give us what we’ve all been waiting for – a proper explanation of the tangled relationships between Sir Malcolm, Vanessa and Mina (guest star Olivia Llewellyn). Sadly for viewers, that means no further development of the bizarre, romantic web being spun between Dorian, Ethan, Vanessa and Brona – for now. Still, Penny Dreadful doesn’t sag despite turning its focus back in time, which is a credit to John Logan’s writing and the strength of the performances.
On paper, it would be a somewhat risky move for a show as young as Penny Dreadful to drop all of its active plot threads for an entire episode to tell what amounts to an origin story. But then again, “Resurrection” did the same thing (to an admittedly lesser degree) while fleshing out the backstory for Caliban/Frankenstein’s Monster.

Well, I guess I'm spending my afternoon catching up on the past two episodes of "Penny Dreadful." Showtime announced on Wednesday (June 3) morning that the Victorian horror mash-up "Penny Dreadful" has been renewed for a second season. [Note: I was already planning on using part of my afternoon to catch up on the past two episodes of "Penny Dreadful."] In addition to renewing "Penny Dreadful," Showtime announced that the second season will be expanded to 10 episodes, up from the eight for the current first season. Production will continue to be in Dublin and "Penny Dreadful" will return in 2015. “Picking up 'Penny Dreadful' was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made," blurbs Showtime President David Nevins, not explaining why the decision didn't come until half-way through the season. "The series has had worldwide impact, drawing big, passionate audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, and more than any other show on our network has hit the bullseye with viewers who want to watch television in all the new ways that are available.

Some excellent news from the 37th Boston Science Fiction Film Festival where a film we’ve been following for a while now picked up the Best Film award, a distinction picked up by a certain Duncan Jones a few years ago for Moon.
The film is Dimensions: A Line, A Loop, A Tangle of Threads and it is the results of many years hard work and passion from director Sloane U’Ren and writer Ant Neely, who produced the film together. It deals with a scientist obsessed with the idea of going back in time to revisit a particular moment in his childhood and from the trailer below it looks to be a sumptuous affair.
Inbetweeners fans may recognise the lead actor, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and he appears alongside Camilla Rutherford, Patrick Godfrey and Olivia Llewellyn. It’s certainly one to keep an eye on – it’ll play in March...

Dimensions Teaser Trailer. Ant Neely, Sloane U’Ren‘s Dimensions (2011) teaser trailer stars Camilla Rutherford, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Patrick Godfrey, Shaun Lucas, and Olivia Llewellyn. Dimensions‘ plot synopsis: “Stephen is a brilliant young boy who lives in Cambridge, England, in what appears to be the 1920s – but nothing in Stephen’s life is quite as it seems. His world is turned upside down upon meeting a charismatic and inspirational professor at a garden party who demonstrates to Stephen and his friends what life would be like if they themselves were merely one, or two, dimensional beings. He then proceeds to explain that by manipulating other dimensions, time travel may actually be possible.
As Stephen’s life unfolds, events lead him to dedicate himself to turning the Professor’s theories of time travel into reality. Jealousy, love, obsession, temptation and greed surround him, influencing his fragile mind and the direction of his work.
