Many a horror film has to get its audience past the critical “now why would you do that” moment, where the plot’s continuation hinges on the protagonist making a brazenly terrible decision — entering that obviously doomed location, taking in that plainly psychotic stranger, failing to kill their tormentor when the opportunity presents itself — as the viewer yells at them do the opposite.
“Caveat,” a creatively cash-strapped debut from Irish writer-director Damian Mc Carthy, wisely gets its own such moment over with in the first 10 minutes, but it’s a doozy. Amnesia-afflicted drifter Isaac (fine newcomer Jonathan French) is enlisted by shady stranger Barrett (Ben Caplan) to look after his psychologically disturbed niece Olga (Leila Sykes) in a decrepit house on a deserted rural island following her father’s recent suicide. If that weren’t tempting enough, Isaac also has to be harnessed and chained to a post in the...

Here’s a free bit of life advice: If someone offers you money to babysit their disturbed adult niece in the remote County Cork house where her father recently killed himself, don’t take it. Isaac (memorable newcomer Jonathan French) knows there has to be a catch, but paying gigs are few and far between for an institutionalized drifter who suffers from memory loss, and his potential employer Moe (Ben Caplan) claims to be an old friend. It’s worth noting that he doesn’t claim to be a very good one.
As we already suspect — and as Isaac learns the hard way — the title of Irish filmmaker Damian Mc Carthy’s “Caveat” wryly undersells the dangers at hand. The first red flag is the house is located on the middle of its own tiny island in the middle of nowhere. Even more alarming: Isaac reveals that he doesn’t know how to swim.

In Caveat, Lone drifter Isaac accepts a job to look after his landlord’s niece, Olga, for a few days in an isolated house on a remote island. It seems like easy money, but there’s a catch: he must wear a leather harness and chain that restricts his movements to certain rooms. Once Olga’s uncle, Barrett leaves the two of them alone, a game of cat and mouse ensues as Olga displays increasingly erratic behavior as a trapped Isaac makes a series of horrific discoveries in the house. Here’s the trailer:
The feature debut from Irish writer/director Damian Mc Carthy, Caveat stars Ben Caplan, Jonathan French (A Soldier’s Voice), and Leila Sykes (Missing Something).

With the release of Beyond the Woods on DVD and VOD in both the UK and America on 19th February, I got a chance to ask writer and director Sean Breathnach a few questions about why he chose this as his first feature film, what were his influences and what makes Beyond the Woods stand out in the horror genre.
How did you first get into filmmaking?
At the start it was through writing scripts. I’d been writing stories since I was a child. I started writing scripts after that – very badly formatted scripts! But one of the scripts got some attention from a production company in London. They took an option on it. It never got made, but it gave me the confidence to keep writing. Eventually I started shooting short scripts myself after I ran out of patience waiting for funding. I got bitten by the bug...

For its franchise hopeful “Call of Duty,” Activision Blizzard Studios is chasing director Stefano Sollima, TheWrap has learned. Sollima is currently in discussions to handle the successful video game’s first trip to the big screen, an individual familiar with the project said. Kieran Fitzgerald will write the script. Sollima directed the forthcoming “Sicario 2: Soldado,” starring Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. The border thriller’s gritty tone should tell you something about the direction the studio is taking the film, under the care of veteran film producer Stacey Sher, Nick van Dyk, Coco Francini and Bobby Kotick. Representatives for Activision anf Sollima did not...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A gripping précis of what Edward Snowden learned at the CIA and Nsa, why he went public, and why it matters. Entertaining yet also deeply unsettling. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Oliver Stone, and of Edward Snowden; love the cast

Paramount, Universal and Legendary aren’t the only studios in Hollywood that have taken to the concept of a writers’ room; Variety brings word today that Warner Bros. has drafted in an assembly of screenwriting talent for Sherlock Holmes 3.
Among those selected are Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Justin Malen (Baywatch), Rogue One scribe Gary Whitta, Geneva Dworet-Robertson (Tomb Raider) and Kieran Fitzgerald, whose last credit was for Oliver Stone’s button-pressing Snowden. That’s quite the cast of names, and though it’s often the case that a studio will recruit a crack team of scribes to fine-tune a franchise, Variety states that the idea behind Sherlock Holmes 3 is to extract all the possible ideas for the upcoming threequel, before deciding which is best to take the franchise forward.

Robert Downey Jr. and Warner Bros. are looking to get things rolling on Sherlock Holmes 3, and they’ve hired a team of writers to help shape the story and script. According to Variety, the writers room that has been set up for the film includes Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Justin Malen (Baywatch), Gary Whitta (Rogue One), Geneva Dworet-Robertson (Tomb Raider), and Kieran Fitzgerald (Snowden).
It’s interesting that they set up a writers room like this for one movie. Most writers rooms are for big franchises that will have multiple films. For example, Paramount Pictures set up a writers room for Transformers and Universal Pictures set one for their upcoming slate of monster movies. According to the report:

Despite the fact that there are plenty of other ways to get your Sherlock Holmes fix these days, Robert Downey Jr. is determined to keep his take on the detective in the mix. Variety reports that Team Downey, Warner Bros., and Village Roadshow have assembled a writers’ room for Sherlock Holmes 3. It’s something of a murderer’s row of people that have worked on big blockbusters, some of which have yet to come out: There’s Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Nicole Perlman, Baywatch’s Justin Malen, Rogue One’s Gary Whitta, Tomb Raider’s Geneva Dworet-Robertson, and Snowden’s Kieran Fitzgerald. With all those names someone should be able to come up with a worthy mystery. Variety acknowledges that a writers’ room for a single movie is a “rare” thing, but explains the idea is to avoid frequent rewrites.

This is only the first step in making the long-rumored film a reality, but it's sounding more and more likely that it goes on floors late next year or early 2018 after Robert Downey Jr. (Captain America: Civil War) fulfills his commitments on Marvel Studios' highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, which is expected to begin its long production schedule next February. Chicago – The experience of director Oliver Stone, to look underneath the slimy rocks of government secrecy and bureaucracy, produces an excellent history lesson in “Snowden,” an overview of Edward Snowden, a whistleblower against the government who is still in exile.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Stone is clear on his position on Snowden, who essentially told the world that their privacy rights were being violated through government access into their technology, he is a patriot. How he became that way is fascinating, with the complexities of spying on chilling display. Get your band-aids or masking tape out and tape that camera hole on your computer, or maybe you’re next on the CIA/Nsa “candid camera.” That is what the film warns, and again Oliver Stone is the agent provocateur who leads the way to teaching us something through his role, as he puts it, as a dramatist.
The story is told in flashback.

At first glance, there is little about Snowden that would seem to distinguish it from some of this year’s other “I’m not sure there’s a movie in that true story” based-on-a-true-story movies like Sully and Deepwater Horizon, especially in the wake of the Wikileaks film The Fifth Estate or the exceptional documentary Citizenfour. But Snowden has a secret weapon, and it’s one that I wasn’t expecting: a fully-engaged and on-his-game Oliver Stone. And when Oliver Stone is on his game and fully engaged, there are few filmmakers who are more interesting or provocative. I have been a fan of his work for most of the time I have been a film fan, even before I knew fully who he was. I was drawn to films he had written, and when he made the jump to directing full-time with the back-to-back accomplishment of Salvador and Platoon,...

What's your take on Edward Snowden: A patriot deserving of a presidential pardon? A traitor deserving of execution, as Trump believes? Something in between? In Snowden the movie, in which a fiercely committed Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the title role, Oliver Stone removes all doubt. He's Saint Edward, the cyber-nerd who's living in exile in Russia for the crime (or heroic act) of leaking classified Nsa documents that show how Uncle Sam (or Big Brother) is monitoring us, all of us, 24/7. As in Citizenfour, the brilliant documentary from Laura Poitras,...

About a week ago, I caught a screening of Snowden, but the embargo was still in place. Now, I can more comfortably say that it’s quite good, easily Oliver Stone’s best film in some time. Not only that, it’s a top notch role for and performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title part. Snowden has been looming for almost a year now, threatening to be a potential player in the Oscar race, and now that it’s about to hit this weekend, I can safely say that it’s a very strong film. As for its Academy Award prospects, well…that remains to be seen. For those unaware, this biopic is a look at Edward Snowden (played here by Gordon-Levitt), who we see go from dedicated work in the military that’s cut short by injury to the work with the CIA and intelligence community that will make him famous/infamous.

Remakes repackaging foreign films for American audiences are justifiable if done correctly. I’d hope our movie-going public would willingly read subtitles and experience the original artist’s vision, but we don’t live in a utopia. Dramatizing non-fiction work is equally acceptable in specific circumstances because a narrative built from talking head interviews is sometimes easier to parse and appreciate than those disparate accounts alone. Where I take umbrage with this trend is when Hollywood uses a documentary–an Oscar-winning documentary no less–and literally re-enacts it for a fictionalized bio-pic. To watch Citizenfour is to be enveloped in a tense journey with real careers and lives at stake. To watch Oliver Stone’s Snowden take Laura Poitras’ film and artificially deliver what she did authentically is to wonder about its point.
Stone has strong opinions and isn’t afraid to release them into the world no matter the backlash.

There’s no more obvious candidate for directing a Edward Snowden biopic than Oliver Stone, the reigning king of conspiratorial left-wing political thrillers. However, the definitive movie about Snowden’s dramatic leak of Nsa files already exists: Laura Poitras’ Oscar-winning documentary “Citizenfour.” Stone’s “Snowden” recounts the same events, using them as a framing device to recount the young character’s radicalization. As a result, “Snowden” largely becomes the CliffsNotes “Citizenfour,” now with a Hollywood gloss.

Nobody owns Oliver Stone. I’ve talked with this filmmaker for decades, and he’s consistent to a fault. The Oscar-winning writer-director (“Platoon,” “JFK,” “Wall Street”) has always gone his own way. If there’s an impediment, he’ll find a way around it. Hell, he’ll even con the El Salvador government to give him army soldiers for a movie critical of El Salvador.
Which is one reason why Stone met with Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden in Moscow, not once, or twice, but nine times. Stone will tell you: You can’t trust the United States government. You can’t trust the Nsa, CIA, or FBI. You can’t trust the Hollywood studios, because those are corporations run by lawyers. And you certainly can’t trust the media.

Earlier today, a new full length Trailer dropped for Snowden, the Oliver Stone helmed biopic of a certain notorious whistleblower. This conspiracy/political thriller seems right up Stone’s wheelhouse, with an A-list cast on to help, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title role. We’ve only seen little teases for the film so far, along with a delayed release from last year (when the movie apparently wasn’t finished yet) to this year, so it’s pretty much been an X factor. Now, a bit more is known, so some musings can be done. Of course, you can see the Trailer at the end of the piece, but for now, let’s dive in and see what we can potentially make of this one… For those unaware, this is a biopic of Edward Snowden (played here by Gordon-Levitt), who we see go from dedicated work in the military to...

Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Timothy Olyphant, Rhys Ifans and Joely Richardson star in the film which Stone co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald. Open Road Films has pushed back Oliver Stone's "Snowden" from its proposed Christmas Day release to an unspecified 2016 date - pushing the film out of this year's awards race.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley star in the film about the former government contractor who leaked classified information. Kieran Fitzgerald and Stone wrote the screenplay.
The project reportedly is not finished yet, and a spokesperson for Open Road Films has not given a comment about why the delay has taken place.
The push back does ease up a crowded Christmas slot which includes "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip," the Will Smith-led NFL drama "Concussion," the Jennifer Lawrence dramedy "Joy," the "Point Break" remake, Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy "Daddy's Home," limited releases for Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "The Revenant," and second week business for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens...
