Britney Spears’ biggest hits are getting a fairy-tale makeover with the arrival of Once Upon a One More Time on Broadway.
Produced by Tony winners James L. Nederlander and Hunter Arnold, the musical comedy will open at the Marquis Theatre on June 23 following previews, which begin May 13. Directed and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid (Beyond Babel, Karate Kid), the show combines classic storybook characters — think Cinderella, Snow White, Little Mermaid and more — with hits from Spears’ extensive, award-winning music catalog.
The show is billed as being inspired by music performed and recorded by Spears, who is otherwise not known to be involved. According to a rep for the production, all of the musical compositions in the show are licensed through their publishers with the approval of the songwriters. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to a lawyer for Spears for comment.

Suzan-Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog, winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize, will return to Broadway this fall in a 20th anniversary production directed by Kenny Leon and starring In the Heights‘ Corey Hawkins and Watchmen‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
The strictly limited 16-week engagement will begin previews on Tuesday, September 27, at Broadway’s John Golden Theatre. The production officially will open on Thursday, October 20.
Tickets are set to go on sale Monday, June 20, Juneteenth National Independence Day.
The production is being produced by David Stone, Lachanze, Rashad V. Chambers, Marc Platt, Debra Martin Chase, and the Shubert Organization.
Hawkins and Abdul-Mateen II will play brothers Lincoln and Booth, respectively, in Parks’ “darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity.” Topdog/Underdog tells the story of the two brothers Lincoln and Booth — named as a joke by their father — who are haunted by the past and their obsession with three-card monte, the street con game.

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. There’s significant overlap between the two voting groups, and the DGA winner tends to be similarly awarded by the Academy — their selections have diverged only seven times since 1949. Cuarón previously won the award for “Gravity,” for which he also won the Oscar.

“Roma” filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron won one of the top prizes at Saturday night’s 71st Directors Guild of America Awards, beating out Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Spike Lee for “BlacKkKlansman,” Adam McKay for “Vice,” and Peter Farrelly for “Green Book” for the feature film award.
Bo Burnham was also among the guild’s big winners, taking home the first-time feature film prize for his coming-of-age drama “Eighth Grade.” He was up against Cooper, Carlos Lopez Estrada for “Blindspotting,” Matthew Heineman for “A Private War,” and Boots Riley for “Sorry to Bother You.”
While Cooper lost out on both awards, two other actors-turned-directors were victorious: Ben Stiller and Bill Hader. Stiller won in the movies for television and limited series category for his prison-break drama “Escape at Dannemora,” while Hader won for comedy series for “Barry,” which he also toplines.

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Jean-Marc Vallee might get a twin win at Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards. With 82/25 odds in our predictions, the “Sharp Objects” director is the favorite to take home the TV movie/miniseries prize for the second year in a row, but he ought to watch out for Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”).
Vallee prevailed last year for “Big Little Lies,” and like with that series, he helmed every episode of “Sharp Objects” as well. He’d be the third person to win this category twice after Lamont Johnson and Jay Roach.
Mick Jackson holds the record with four victories, for “Indictment: The McMartin Trial” (1995), “Tuesdays with Morrie” (1999), “Live with Baghdad” (2002) and “Temple Grandin” (2010). Joseph Sargent has three DGA Awards, for “The Marcus-Nelson Murders” (1973), “Something the Lord Made” (2004) and, in a tie with George C. Wolfe for “Lackawanna Blues,” “Warm Springs” (2005).

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Ryan Murphy has now been nominated a total of 28 times at the Emmys and has taken home four trophies. However, the only individual Emmy he has won so far was for directing the “Glee” pilot back in 2010. Will he now take home his second individual Emmy eight years later for directing the first episode of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” titled “The Man Who Would Be Vogue”?
Currently, Gold Derby’s racetrack odds have Murphy in the lead to win Best Movie/Mini Directing, ahead of David Lynch (“Twin Peaks”), Scott Frank (“Godless”), David Leveaux and Alex Rudzinski (“Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert”), Edward Berger (“Patrick Melrose”), Craig Zisk (“The Looming Tower”) and Barry Levinson (“Paterno”).

“The obvious choice is Ryan Murphy for ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ because it’s the Limited Series front-runner and those often go hand in hand with a directing win. But this is his fifth consecutive nomination, and he never wins and never won at the Directors Guild,” Riley Chow explains to me and our fellow Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright, Zach Laws and Tony Ruiz in our Emmy predictions slugfest about the race for Best Movie/Mini Directing (watch above). Based on our latest predictions, Murphy is ahead with 8/11 odds as of this writing, but might there be an upset?
Our odds currently place David Lynch’s revival of “Twin Peaks” second with odds of 9/2, and both Laws and Bright make passionate arguments for Lynch’s achievement directing a full 18 episodes of television. “This category seems uniquely qualified for a ‘Twin Peaks’ upset,” Bright declares. But “Peaks” was snubbed for Best Limited Series.

When the Emmy nominations were announced on Thursday morning, July 12, it looked like it might have been a complete shut out for “Twin Peaks.” The Showtime revival was snubbed for Best Limited Series and Kyle MacLachlan was also missing from Best Movie/Mini Actor. But when the entire list was released it turned out the show had done pretty well for itself in behind-the-scenes categories. It picked up nine total bids including Best Movie/Mini Directing for David Lynch and Best Movie/Mini Writing for Lynch and Mark Frost. Could the show still win those categories despite its snub in top categories? Yes, because “The Hour” is at hand.

Winning an Oscar for Original Song with Selma’s “Glory,” a Tony forJitney and several Grammys over the years, John Legend landed his first Emmy nomination today for his portrayal of Jesus in NBC’s live, televised adaptation of Jesus Christ Superstar, pushing him even further toward the rare Egot honor.
Speaking with Deadline, the singer-songwriter admitted that he could never have foreseen the turns his career has taken to date. “When I started my career, I just wanted to make some really great songs and albums and hopefully win some Grammys,” Legend said. “This recent turn of events is really exciting, but this is nothing, at the beginning of my career, that I would have ever bet on.”
Taking on the challenge of a live televised musical for the first time, Legend didn’t make things easy on himself, setting out on a pre-planned Asian tour in the middle of his rehearsal period.

Back in 1970, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first envisioned “Jesus Christ Superstar” as a rock opera concept album performed live in concert like The Who’s “Tommy” rather than as a Broadway show. And NBC’s latest concert-musical hybrid delivered on that concept. It was a stripped down, single-space, sung-through, live event at Brooklyn’s Marcy Avenue Armory, starring John Legend as Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary, Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas, and Alice Cooper as King Herod.
Between Jason Ardizzone-West’s (“Adele Live in New York City”) architecturally-inspired production design, and Paul Tazewell’s forward looking costume design (Emmy-winner for “The Wiz! Live”), “Superstar” became an aesthetically relevant event.

Join host and Awards Editor Jack Smart for a front row seat to the industry’s most exciting awards races, and valuable acting and career advice from contenders! Although well-known in the Broadway community for years of stage work—recently as Aaron Burr in “Hamilton” and for his Tony Award-nominated performances—Brandon Victor Dixon became a breakout star in front of a much larger audience this Easter. His Judas in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert,” which aired on NBC April 1, was nothing short of a revelation. Dixon dug deep into the character’s conflict, unleashing or restraining emotion as needed, and both began and ended the rock musical with rousing showstoppers. Directed by David Leveaux and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, this “Jesus Christ Superstar” was watched by millions,...

It’s only appropriate that NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert air on Easter Sunday. There is no better way to celebrate the Holy holiday than with an Easter egg hunt in the day and a live TV adaptation of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at night. And when it comes to NBC live musical events, Jesus Christ Superstar ranks at the top. What could have felt like a dated rock opera was more like an uproarious arena concert filled with screaming fans, frenetic lights, blaring speakers, pyrotechnics and a group of musicians and performers fueled with the spirit of a chaotic electric guitar wildly flailing about — just how Jesus would have wanted it.

Easter Sunday is a day to celebrate life, and NBC is doing its part by bringing Jesus to life on the small screen — well, live on the small screen, anyhow. “Jesus Christ Superstar” — the ’70s rock opera that’s dominated Broadway, toured the world, and even became a movie in 1973 — is being reimagined with John Legend in the lead role of our Lord and savior.
Billed as a staged concert, the production will air live from the Marcy Armory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y., and NBC has recruited an all-star crew to bring the beloved music to life. David Leveaux (“Nine”) is directing alongside Emmy Award-winning live television director and executive producer Alex Rudzinski (“Hairspray Live!”), Emmy- and Tony Award-winning costumer designer Paul Tazewell (“The Wiz Live!”), and the musical director of the “Jesus Christ Superstar” world arena tour, Nigel Wright.

The rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar will be resurrected as a live concert on NBC airing Sunday, April 1, 45 years after the movie became a hit — so what better way to celebrate than by learning secrets about the original movie? The new event is just the latest incarnation of the musical, created in 1970 by then-20-somethings Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. "The premise comes from that Bob Dylan line, 'Did Judas Iscariot have God on his side?'" Lloyd Webber says of their story of Jesus' last six days. The 1973 film, starring Ted Neeley as Jesus and Carl Anderson as Judas, earned a devoted following. "It changed my life completely," says Ted, who at 74 still plays Jesus in traveling productions. "It's the most magnificent experience I've ever had — that's why I will do it until [my voice] doesn't work anymore," he says. Here's a look at some of the miracles that brought the movie to life.

If NBC were looking for a higher-stakes musical to broadcast live on TV, it’s hard to imagine the Peacock landing a bigger fish than “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The rock opera musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice has been revered and reviled over the course of its 47-year history, and the network’s faith in being able to pull off a one-time-only performance at the Brooklyn Armory on April 1 is tantamount to suggesting it can turn water into wine.
Fortunately, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” is riding on more than faith. Producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan (“Hairspray Live,” “The Sound of Music Live,” three Oscar telecasts) are in charge of their fifth such Broadway-to-tv production, and by bringing on board below-the-line artisans with both stage and screen expertise, what could have been a tricky gamble is likely to pay off big.

By all accounts Kaiser Wilhelm II was hardly a great leader. He put Germany onto its fateful course towards World War I and shortly after defeat was forced to abdicate the throne into exile at the secluded Netherlands mansion Huis Doorn. Alan Judd would eventually write an historical fiction novel entitled The Kaiser’s Last Kiss about the former crown holder and an incident involving the Nazis, Gestapo, and Hitler’s right-hand Heinrich Himmler—with the potential for redemption. Christopher Plummer would read said book, let his manager know of his interest, and wait ten years before another’s option lapsed so it could fall into their hands. Simon Burke would crack the screenplay, theater director David Leveaux would be hired to helm his debut, and The Exception would be born.
Plummer takes on the role of Wilhelm, now an aged master of the mansion living on the allowance of the Reich’s pity.

Let me just be clear about his right up front: I like thinking about Black Book. Paul Verhoeven's sexy 2008 Holocaust thriller with Carice Van Houten is one of my favorite movies and I've seen it at least a dozen times by now.
