Almost Paradise continues the creatively fruitful collaboration between producer Dean Devlin (they worked together on Leverage and The Librarians). That said, Almost Paradise has managed to carve its own identity with the help of co-stars Samantha Richelle and Arthur Acuña.

Ahh. Christian Kane, looking exasperated and kicking ass.
There's really nothing new on Almost Paradise Season 1 Episode 1.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
This new Wgn American original series marked the third time that the charismatic Kane has collaborated with producer Dean Devlin, following The Librarians and Leverage.
It's shot on location in The Philippines, so the scenery is so much more breathtaking than the stuffy Library where Kane last toiled.
That's a bonus for us viewers stuck in states where winter just won't let go.
For some reason, this reminded me of the old "Crimetime After Primetime" series Tropical Heat/Sweating Bullets (depending on where you watched it), another crime-solving show set in sunny climes.
Kane plays retired DEA Agent Alex Walker, another antihero seeking redemption, much like Eliot Spencer on Leverage.
Fortunately, Devlin has chosen to slowly reveal Alex's back story, rather than just drop it all in an exposition-heavy pilot.

For Dean Devlin, the idea of the new Wgn America series Almost Paradise came about 14 years ago during his honeymoon in Hawaii. He connected and was intoxicated by island culture, island justice and island spirituality — and wanted to make a show set in Hawaii. His soulful connection to island life made sense considering he is of Filipino descent. With that in mind, the idea for the show shifted.
“As the years went on and I kept thinking about it, there was something there that wasn’t authentic to me,” Devlin told Deadline. “It was only a couple of years ago that the idea came to do it in the Philippines and then it changed everything. Then I got really excited about the project.”

It's an unprecedented time in our world's history, but even in times of calamity, the show must go on.
It's more important than ever to keep a smile on your face, and Christian Kane, who stars on Almost Paradise premiering tonight on Wgn America, is more than happy to do what he can to keep you smiling.
On the new series, Kane stars as Alex Walker, a former DEA agent forced into retirement as he settles in the Philipines with the expectation of long, lazy days and restful nights but soon learns his island paradise isn't at all what he remembered.
We had a chance to chat with Kane about the new series, filming in the Philipines, leading a production so far away from home, and a whole lot more. I know you'll enjoy excerpts from our interview below.

Christian Kane has been a TV Fanatic favorite ever since his days on Leverage as Eliot Spencer.
As such, we followed him to The Librarians, but aside from guest appearances here and there, he has not been on our TV screens regularly.
That's about to change, and his new show looks to be one for the Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum Pi crowd.
It follows Alex Walker (Kane), a former U.S. DEA agent who was forced into early retirement.
"Once the DEA's most resourceful undercover operative, the combination of his partner's betrayal and a life-threatening battle with hypertension has sent him as far from the madness as he can go - a small tropical island in the Philippine Archipelago," reads the official logline.
"He now runs the gift shop in the island's luxury resort hotel, gets his disability payments at the Us Naval base, and generally manages his transition...
