Jonathan Demme’s 2008 “Rachel Getting Married” was a critical success and even pulled in about $13 million at the box office. The film has an 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and nabbed an impressive 37 awards on the festival circuit. Anne Hathaway scored her first Oscar nom for her work as Kym, the titular Rachel’s troubled sister. And why shouldn’t the film and its stars have received so much acclaim? Look at the cast: in addition to Hathaway, Demme lined up Anna Deavere Smith, Rosemarie DeWitt, Bill Irwin, and even TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe as Rachel’s groom, Sidney. As it happened, that last piece of casting almost wasn’t to be. In a recent interview with Stereogum, Adebimpe reveals scheduling conflicts prevented Demme’s first choice from joining the project, and the prospective Sidney might surprise you. “Oh, and the other funny thing about it was later,...

Mikky Ekko is a safer driver than you. Or he has psychic powers. In a moving addition to the Car Crash Music Video genre, the "Smile" clips co-stars the singer with a lovely garlanded (as opposed to Garlanded) maiden. The lovers traipse the field in reverse, retelling a tale of old, and one man faces the eternal question: do I let my girlfriend drive my automobile? "Smile" is the first single from Ekko's debut album "Time," out via RCA some time this fall. The set features collaborations with TV On The Radio collaborator Dave Sitek, Jeff Bhasker, Stargate, Dennis Herring, Clams Casino, Nick Ruth, Justin Parker, Benny Blanco and recent music video heartbreaker Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic). Mikky Ekko is out on tour with Alt-j -- who had a big Billboard 200 bow this week -- in November. Still trying to place that voice? Ekko was featured on Rihanna's smash hit "Stay.

TV On The Radio singer Tunde Adebimpe had an idea for a music video, where "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" actor and icon Paul Reubens would play a race car driver losing his mind. He took the idea to Funny Or Die. Apparently, those kind of pitches work. Rope in "Doctor Who" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Karen Gillan, throw the formerly indie band in some smashing white suits, and you've got yourself this Danny Jelinek-directed video insanity, for song "Happy Idiot." "I got to speak with [Reubens] over the phone about doing it and, in between being blindingly nervous that I was actually talking to an actor who had shaped a Lot of my world view and trying not to freak him out by saying so, he mentioned that he's been a fan of the band for awhile," Adebimpe explained in a press release. "He liked the idea, and, somehow, here...

The first still from Kristen Wiig's upcoming “Nasty Baby” just landed, and we’re hopeful that means there’s plenty more (including a trailer) on the horizon. Having entered post-production, though still without a release date or festival appearance announced, hopes are already high for the film, which is written and directed by Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Silva ("The Maid"), who also co-stars (that's him in the photo next to Wiig). TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe joins as Silva's boyfriend, and Wiig plays their best friend and surrogate in the couple’s quest to have a baby. Here’s the full synopsis: Nasty Baby centers around a Brooklyn couple, Freddy and his boyfriend Mo, who are trying to have a baby with the help of their best friend, Polly. Freddy is an artist, and his latest work is all about babies – it’s clear he’s dying to be a father.

TV On The Radio is feeling a little moody. A little distraught, a little post-grunge sad. "Happy Idiot," the rock band's first single off their new album "Seeds" is super-pop, and yet bumming out in the corner of the party. Tunde Adebimpe sings about becoming that happy idiot in a blaze of teenaged feelings -- banging his head against the wall to feel nothing at all, et cetera -- as the band bounds underneath him at a health Bpm. I'm particularly keen on those drums and the tamborine, and the tight adherence to the melody. But it's simple. There's a restraint like a Nirvana verse that never quite pays off. Will the rest of "Seeds" be equally resistant to The Big Chorus? "Seeds" is due Nov. 18 via Harvest. Fans may want to pre-order the album, giving them pre-sale access to the few fall tour dates the Brooklyn crew's announced so far.

Downtown La is ready to chill. And dance. And sway. And chill some more. Fyf Fest is back this Saturday and Sunday at La's State Historic Park. We remember when the It guy at our last job was the only one talking about this local music festival. Now eight years deep, the Fuck Yeah Festival draws in more and more crowds each year.
While the biggest names are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mgmt, TV On The Radio and My Bloody Valentine, we don't need to tell you what you already know. Those bands are headlining, the crowds will be there. But for a fresher experience, check out our suggestions for the top 6 bands that you don't want to miss.

You've got to hand it to director Sebastian Silva... he has certainly defied all expectations. After scoring a little arthouse hit with 2009's festival fave "The Maid," Silva didn't cash in those chips for something mainstream, but instead pivoted around and let his freak flag fly. He teamed up with Michael Cera for two movies that dropped this year, the druggy road trip "Crystal Fairy" and the Polanski-esque thriller "Magic Magic." His next move? How about a comedy about two gay men looking to have a baby? Yep, that's the premise of the bluntly titled "Nasty Baby," and even more, Silva is working a pretty serious Rolodex in casting this one. He's nabbed hot comedienne Kristen Wiig and TV On The Radio frontman and sometimes actor Tunde Adebimpe (you probably recognize him from "Rachel Getting Married") for the movie that will see two men (Adebimpe and Silva himself), who enlist...

While she’s proved adapt at balancing comedy and drama in several films, Kristen Wiig hasn’t appeared in a straight-out drama since her small role in All Good Things. She’s set to change that if she makes a deal to co-star in Nasty Baby. The Brooklyn-set film is the brainchild of Sebastian Silva, and would see the writer-director playing Freddy, an artist who longs to have a baby with his partner, Mo (Tunde Adebimpe, usually found fronting indie band TV On The Radio). They turn to best pal Anna (the role Wiig’s in talks to take), a family practioner more ready to have a baby than be in a relationship. But when Freddy’s sperm isn’t quite getting the job done in terms of procreation, Mo realises he may have to step up – and he’s not sure he wants to be a father anyway. Cult comic book writer Alan Moore, best known for "Watchmen" and "V for Vendetta," has just debuted the first film he has scripted, a 30-minute short called "Jimmy's End." Like a lost fantasy sequence from "Twin Peaks," "Jimmy's End" sees James/Jimmy (Darrell D'Silva) explore a fantastic afterlife of burlesque dancers and thugs. The film, directed by Mitch Jenkins, features music by Andy Broder (Fog), Adam Drucker (doseone) and Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio). Several of Moore's works have been made into films; "V for Vendetta," "Watchmen," "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" and "From Hell" are all based on Moore's work, though he has what can generously be described as a complicated relationship with the adaptations and has publicly distanced himself from them. At last night's gala benefit for The Moth, a non-profit dedicated to the art of storytelling, Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels shared a few memories of Adam "McA" Yauch with The Huffington Post.
In the early 80s, McDaniels' group, Run-d.M.C., and Yauch's group, the Beastie Boys, were label-mates on Def Jam Records -- and tag-team partners locked in combat with music's status quo. Today, both groups are safely ensconced in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but it wasn't always obvious that they were destined for immortality.
"You know, it was early, so people thought Run Dmc's a fad, Beasties is a fad, you know, all of this is a fad," McDaniels said. "Run-d.M.C., we crossed over with the rock -- but then it was Run-d.M.C. and the Beastie Boys that took it to venues. We started playing Madison Square Garden, L.A.

The Rolling Stones were honored at Carnegie Hall Tuesday night with an all-star tribute show that featured nearly two dozen artists -- from Art Garfunkel to Jackson Browne and Peaches -- singing some of The Stones greatest hits from their "Hot Rocks" compilation album.
None of The Stones made the trip to Carnegie Hall, despite rumors that Keith Richards would attend.
While much of the recent focus on The Stones has been on the decades-long rift between Mick Jagger and Richards, the focus of Tuesday night's tribute show was very much on the legacy of The Stones and their music.
Marianne Faithfull took the Carnegie Hall stage to perform her breakthrough 1964 single, "As Tears Go By," which was the first song ever written by Richards and Jagger.
Italian singer Jovanotti opened the show with members of TV On The Radio and a youth choir, singing the 1969 hit "You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Most of the world knows Santi White by the name Santigold, her stage name, and the title of the 2008 debut album that got everyone talking. She growls, she dives underwater, she stomps through the desert. But somehow, Santigold's music video for her track "Big Mouth" works.
In addition to frantically bearing all the teeth in her "big mouth," the singer uses animation to critique pop culture, showing Lady Gaga swimming through the ocean as a mermaid, Katy Perry with her signature blue hair, and a not-so-flattering portrayal of Lindsay Lohan's boobs.
Since bursting on the scene as Santogold in 2008, the singer-songwriter has swapped the first "o" in her name for an "i" and has toured with M.I.A. and Bjork. Her album Master Of My Make-Believe, out this spring, features collaborations with "TV On The Radio's" David Sitek and the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs'" Nick Zinner.
This should push her out of the indie world and right in the cross hairs of the world's biggest pop stars.

It’s almost that special time of year again, when girls from all around get the opportunity to eroticize a vast array of professions and every pet owner gets a chance to make their dog hate them just a little bit. My top costume predictions are Ryan Gosling’s “Drive” outfit with the badass cream-colored satin jacket, the inappropriate costume of the year will likely be a bloody Muammar Gaddafi, while the Steve Jobs get-up – black turtleneck and some blue jeans – will become the go-to outfit for all nerds (and people wanting a cheap costume) to pay tribute to the fallen visionary.
Everyone loves dressing up and attempting to be as witty as possible with their outfit. Halloween is actually a great backdrop for a music video too with its vivid imagery and slew of monsters to choose from. It’s no wonder these videos went the creepy route with their ideas,...

Her album of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head, produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek, is actually pretty good and in the various compilations or soundtracks she has contributed to Johansson is keenly aware that while she doesn't have a particularly broad range, her strength lies in her woozy, sexy, husky delivery and with that, she does quite well with it. Her latest musical effort to come to the fore finds her teaming with Lulu Gainsbourg (yes, Serge's son) for a…...

TV On The Radio want to take you on a magic carpet ride. In their latest music video, the Brooklyn rockers take at least some advantage of a green screen and the Dancing Guy from your local cable access late-night sked and jumble it up with a bunch of their friends, one of whom is a video editor with a free weekend. "Caffeinate Consciousness" is mostly the former and barely the latter; it plays like an inside joke grafted in the early '90s. But the dude at 0:37 is pretty much my favorite thing ever. The track's from "Nine Types of...

I said, let’s all meet up in the year 2011, be there at 2 o’clock by Hyde Park down the road… yes, you guessed right, this weekend just gone was host to Pulp headlining the Wireless Festival, where, ironically, I couldn’t get a wireless signal on my phone. Wireless was a highly anticipated music milestone this year, as it was the first announced live show that Pulp would have played in nine years. And the special guests were also very notable – Foals, currently riding the waves of success on their second album, Total Life Forever, The Hives, a Swedish rock band known for their, um, rather energetic shows, and TV On The Radio, the versatile music-men from Brooklyn who I swear have played every genre of music known to man, as well as inventing a few new ones.

Cee Lo Green will host his own talk show — set to premiere on Fuse on June 22 — called Talking To Strangers. In a preview posted to Fuse’s website, the foul-mouthed soul man sits down with some of the biggest names in rap, R&B, and indie. Lupe Fiasco, Keri Hilson and TV On The Radio all stop by to talk and perform on the show. With Green at the helm, the show looks to be anything but normal. Don’t let the puppets and flashy wardrobe fool you: Cee Lo asks the tough questions — and (hopefully) lets members of...

TV On The Radio just released a new video for “You” off of their latest album Nine Types of Light. Directed by New Yorker Barney Clay, the 10-minute video is fittingly absurd. It shows a hypothetical post-break-up TV On The Radio reuniting in a diner after a year apart. Everyone is doing something positively ridiculous with their post-band lives, including working as a Prince impersonator, opening a dojo and writing ice skating shows entitled “Bush Administration on Ice.”...

Broken Social Scene takes an uncharacteristically dark turn with this video for "Sweetest Kill" off last year's "Forgiveness Rock Record." With the woozy song as backdrop, occasionally serving as dialogue, a twisted woman played by Bijou Phillips plots her lovers demise and executes her bloody plan with an axe and hand saw.
She first poisons her lover's wine and dances with him until he succumbs on the floor of her hazy living room. Then, in a scene reminiscent of "American Psycho," she hacks at him with a giant axe in shots that would make "Braveheart" era Mel Gibson jealous. It's all for those pretty white roses she grows out back in her wicked, sensuous soil.
Warning: This video contains graphic imagery and hacked apart limbs that may not be suitable for all.
Broken Social Scene will be supporting TV On The Radio for two weeks at the end of their late summer tour in September.

The summer blockbuster/superhero sweepstakes continue with X-Men: First Class, which is both the latest from director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake) and the fifth film in the X-Men series, though the first chronologically speaking. Since we already reviewed all the other X-Men flicks way back when, we’ll also be talking about 2003′s much-maligned Daredevil in its two-hour-plus director’s cut, as well as this month’s listener pick, the would-be franchise-starting superhero/spy/martial-arts oddity Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, starring Fred Ward. Special guest star Josh Youngerman joins us from New York.

TV On The Radio is back on the road again. The group took a much-needed break after the unfortunate and untimely death of bassist Gerard Smith back in April. But now, they’re back together and have added a number of dates to their already extensive summer tour. They’ll be playing at tons of festivals across Europe and the United States. Solo U.S. dates are largely concentrated in the Midwest....

The season finale for "Body of Proof" is on tonight and I mention it only because I've seen that there's something of an informal trend happening on TV right now with Medical Examiners in heels. "Bones" has one in the lovely and somewhat inconsistently written Camille Saroyan, "Rizzoli and Isles" practically writes half the show around that premise, and "Body of Proof" appears to be doing likewise. I'm not saying that one cannot be a whip smart and professional lady in stilettos, I'm saying that as someone who wears them on occasion I definitely wouldn't be wearing them anywhere near decomposing bodies. They like to sink in soft soil and you would run a high risk of getting corpse juice on your feet and I don't care how used to dealing with bodies you are, that's extremely icky. Also I'm pretty sure squatting down to get a better look at...

Frontman Tunde Adebimpe created a companion film for his band's latest record, "Nine Types of Light," along with 10 other directors who he invited to help portray his vision. The hour-long extravaganza weaves in music videos for each of the 10 songs on the record. The segment for "You," directed by Barney Clay, which premiered separately today is a hilarious look at TV On The Radio meeting at a diner one year after a fictional break up.
Dave Sitek has invested all of his money in a "Bush administration on Ice" show, Kip's been deep into a Peanuts LARPing community, playing cool Snoopy of course, and Tunde has been having a mid life Prince crisis -- of the formerly known as kind. "I don't actually go by Tunde anymore" [he draws a picture of a cryptic symbol]. "It's kind of a... it's an unspeakable name."

Lera Lynn’s song “Bobby Baby” won the 2011 Chris Austin Songwriting Contest hosted by Merlefest Festival in Wilkesboro, N.C., which afforded her the privilege of performing between headlining sets. But before leaving for the festival, she and bandmate Ben Lewis recorded a banjo-driven cover of TV On The Radio’s “Wolf Like Me.” While learning the song, Lera Lynn heard that TV On The Radio’s bassist Gerard Smith passed away from a battle with lung cancer. They have since offered “Wolf Like Me” as a tribute to the musician....

It’s been six years since Iran dropped the sweet bedroom noise of The Moon Boys, and since then, primary songwriter and vocalist Aaron Aites moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn, where guitarist Kyp Malone later linked up with TV On The Radio. And while it isn’t really fair to call Iran a side project, the Tvotr influence is palpable. Aites recently described the sounds on Dissolver as “hi-fi,” an apt descriptor considering the Dave Sitek-assisted leaps they’ve made sonically. No longer hiding melodies behind so many drapes of hiss and scramble, Aites has opened things up. The ...
