Check out the definition of hipster and you will find out that it’s “A person who follows the latest trends and fashions.” When a horror film calls itself a hipster, teen horror-comedy it makes you wonder, just how hipster can it manage to be and what does a hipster teen horror-comedy even mean? What it is turns out to be is a film called Detention, a tragically “hip” comedy about teenage life stuck in the middle of a horror film, even though that can’t be right because that is so cliché.
Riley is the main character in Detention, she spends her time pointing out she’s not the pathetic Neve Campbell character because that would be so lame. The only problem of course is that the...

After birthing the critical mess that was 2004′s Torque, director Joseph Kahn decided to take a few years off and focus back on his music video directing career. Working with such artists as Muse, Eminem, Britney Spears, and the Wu-Tang Clan, many wondered if Kahn would ever rebound from Hollywood’s harsh backlash.
Fast forward to 2011, and Kahn exposed a self funded ace from his sleeve titled Detention. Taking the festival circuit by storm, Kahn’s energetic filmmaking started garnering audience awards and critical acclaim from those lucky enough to snag a ticket, and for good reason. Learning from the over developed B-Movie mistakes that plagued Torque, Joseph Kahn’s entry into horror comedy territory will this time be remembered for cheers, not jeers.

Detention (2011) Movie Review
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Spencer Locke, Brooke Haven, and Shanley Caswell
Directed by: Joseph Kahn
Written by: Joseph Kahn (written by) and Mark Palermo (written by)
Detention is a rather unique film, it features a myriad of genres combined, comedy, slasher film, teen drama, and sci-fi are all thrown into the mix. Director Joseph Kahn has only made one other feature film, 2004’s Torque and a handful of music videos which is surprising because Kahn definitely has a visual style that’s all his own, which is on full display here, part of the reason why Detention is so interesting to watch. Detention is chock full of pop culture references, many to other films, so many in fact, I couldn’t count them all. This film is so complex that I had to watch it twice to catch everything that...

Director: Joseph Kahn. Writers: Joseph Kahn and Mark Palermo. Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Brooke Haven, Walter Perez, Aaron Perilo, Will Wallace, Jesse Heiman, Lindsey Morgan, and Marque Richardson. Detention is only director Joseph Kahn's second film. But, already this filmmaker is showing brilliance in this comedy slash serial killer feature. Kahn's background includes the 2004 action film Torque and a series of music videos. He brings the quick cuts and visual style of music videos to this feature. He also brings many, many pop culture references to what is the funniest film this reviewer has seen so far this year. And kudos to Kahn for creating such a complex storyline that is literally chock full of subplots. The central storyline focuses on Riley (Shanley Caswell) and her crush on Clapton Davis (Josh Hutcherson). She has to compete with Ione (Spencer Locke) for his attentions. And,...

Remember that scene in A Clockwork Orange when Alex, constrained and with eyes pried open, is forced to watch nasty bits of ultra-violence underscored by Ludwig van’s 9th symphony 4th movement?
Well, replace ultra-violence with ultra-style and Beethoven with some Backstreet Boys, and you have Joseph Kahn’s horror comedy, Detention.
Although nowhere near as tortuous with the experience compared, Detention does subject the viewer to a flourish of nonstop visual stimulus and candy-coloured kinetic energy. Glossy and forever frenetic, this is an experience that, like a rollercoaster, may induce either extreme vertigo or extreme motion sickness. Or maybe even both.
The film stars Shanley Caswell as Riley Jones, a social misfit and high school pariah. Although she’s preoccupied with genocide, poverty and political corruption (but not prom), she also worries about the newly formed...

Chicago – Don’t be duped by Joseph Kahn’s insultingly unintelligent trailer for his new Adhd high school slasher/comedy “Detention”. Rather than prematurely blowing his load with the film’s crème de la crème in a two-minute trailer, he’s done the reverse. Kahn – who scraped much of this “indie” film’s $10 million budget from his own pockets – has set up disappointed trailer watchers to discover a hidden gem in his second feature-length film.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Kahn’s fast-paced, Aaron Sorkin-like “Detention” deserves cult-hit status. Just as “The Social Network” embodies our Facebook culture, this SXSW film-festival favorite rewrites today’s high school movie bible.
Despite what this film’s sophomoric trailer might lead you to believe, “Detention” is anything but tenderfoot and witless. And don’t be nauseated by the disenchanting storyline of a killer named Cinderhella stalking the high school student body while a gaggle of co-eds...

What kind of movie is “Detention?”
In this film, a young actor named Parker Bagley plays Billy Nolan, a high school jock who hides the truth from friends and enemies about his own half-fly DNA. He vomits acid and his wings spring up at inopportune moments. Billy's spent a large portion of his childhood trying to hide his alien mutation by wearing a giant television set over his hand. At the midway point of the film, we realize Billy Nolan is only a supporting character, and his fate is, in many ways, irrelevant to the resolution of the film.
So yes, it’s that kind of movie. Or it’s the kind of movie that features a time-traveling bear. Or a movie that features a crucial moment where a character performs the “Dirty Dancing” choreography to a remix of “MmmBop.” It’s also a film where we realize one of...

Clip, trailer and images from Josh Hutcherson horror comedy Detention. Helmed by Joseph Kahn, who scripts with Mark Palermo, Detention opens via Samuel Goldwyn Films on April 13th. Also starring Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke and Dane Cook, the horror comedy follows local students of Grizzly Lake who must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is Cinderhella, a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life and is preying on the school’s student body. As the clock ticks and the bodies pile up, the likely suspects are embroiled in a race against time to stop Cinderhella and ultimately save the world… if only they can get out of detention. Detention is produced by Richard Weager, Mary Ann Tanedo and Joseph Kahn. This actually looks pretty slick. See all the images and the poster below the new videos.

Joseph Kahn’s debut feature Torque was an odd film that led to some pretty fascinating defences, in particular from online critics who believed that the film had been crucially misunderstood. Whilst the film may be misunderstood in some ways it is far from being a film worthy of high praise and the extent to which Kahn manages to have his cake and eat it with the supposed satirical approach leaves the film feeling a little off-balance and unsatisfying.
Torque was very much a studio picture though and therefore subject to a certain degree of compromise. For Kahn’s follow-up though he has chosen to do something quite extraordinary and finance the film almost entirely on his own. From a script written with Mark Palermo he has directed the film without studio input/interference and in exactly the way he wanted to. The result is as close to a singular...

Director Joseph Kahn has been directing music videos for two decades, working with big-time efforts like U2, Britney Spears, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, and many, many more. Now he’s combined that experience with his love of all things pop culture to create one of the Fantasia Film Festival’s biggest crowd pleasing hits, his sophomore feature, Detention.
Packing in more confounding slang than The Fp, and more gonzo subplots than an Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu film, Detention is a speedy reckless high-school horror-comedy made specifically for the YouTube generation. I had the pleasure of sitting down with both Khan and co-writer Mark Palermo to discuss their labor of love, a film financed completely by the director himself. Not surprisingly, Kahn talks like his film: fast and precise, and makes for a great interviewee. Take a listen below. Enjoy!

"Detention," a genre-bending low-budget film starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook and Shanley Caswell ("Little Victories") is heading to theaters. Sony Pictures announced it has acquired worldwide rights to the film. Mixing elements of comedy, horror, sci-fi and action movies, the film centers on a group of high school seniors who face off against a slasher killer, and ultimately find themselves in a position to save the world - if only they can get out of detention. Directed by music video veteran Joseph Kahn (2004's motorcycle actioner "Torque"), "Detention" was co-written by Kahn and Mark Palermo. "This is the best apocalyptic fantasy,...

At first glance, Joseph Kahn's Detention looks, as I've said before, like it might be just a "post-Scream meta-slasher movie." But the trailer [1] we saw for the film suggested that it is a lot more than that, or at least a lot more crazy than that. Reviews out of SXSW, where the film premiered, were slightly mixed, but the enthusiastic ones were very enthusiastic. In short, I'm hoping that Detention will be a movie that can satiate my hunger for a wild genre movie in the same way that Attack the Block satisfies as a teen-oriented summer sci-fi thriller. We'll all get to see Detention sometime in the coming months thanks to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which has picked up all rights to distribute the film. A press release and a THR [2] news break offer up the news, and the press release giddily repeats one summarization of the film: "an apocalyptic,...

Sony Pictures has announced that they’ve picked up former music video director turned movie director Joseph Kahn’s wacky time-traveling comedy/horror/slasher film “Detention” for worldwide distribution. Raves Sony’s Scott Shooman about the pick-up: This is the best apocalyptic fantasy, horror, science fiction, action-thriller, body swapping, time-traveling teen romantic comedy that we have ever screened. The pace, energy, and awesomeness Joseph Kahn has achieved in ‘Detention’ is completely mind-blowing in the best way possible. Co-written by Kahn and Mark Palermo, “Detention” stars Josh Hutcherson (one of the stars of the upcoming “Hunger Game”), comedian Dane Cook, Spencer Locke, Jesse Heiman, and Melanie Abramoff. “Detention” follows the students of Grizzly Lake as “they survive their final year of high school, where they’re in a race against time to stop a slasher killer, which will in turn save the world — if only they can get out of detention.

Complete Coverage of SXSW Film 2011

A downtrodden 17-year-old girl is sent to detention where she must survive a slasher film killer and save the world in time for prom.
Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson (World Premiere)
Who’S It For?: This is especially for those just leaving high school, as for the right person, Detention will play right on cue to chords of pre-adulthood angst. As for everyone else, some appetite for 100% pop sugar is needed for full enjoyment of this movie.

Undoubtedly, one of the most polarizing genre movies of the South by Southwest Film Festival was writer/director Joseph Kahn’s Detention. It’s definitely one of those ‘love it or hate it’ flicks that is filled with flashy images, pop culture references, and quick edits that you’d come to expect from a legendary music video director like Kahn. Like the film or not, audiences can’t deny that Kahn has a style that is most definitely all his own.
Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kahn and his co-writer Mark Palermo while in Austin to talk about their experiences after enjoying the world premiere of Detention at the festival earlier, Kahn’s thoughts on modern horror, and a discussion on some of the homages and pop culture references in the flick.

Torque director Joseph Kahn has made a very strange-looking teen slasher movie called Detention. The film will soon premiere at SXSW, and the trailer has arrived today. While the opening of the trailer might make you think this is a routine post-Scream meta-slasher movie, be sure to watch all the way through. Because this one goes to some unexpected places by the end. If nothing else, the trailer sells Detention's very high 'Wtf?' factor, and that's pretty great. MTV [1] presents the trailer, and at first I was a little put off. There's an opening gag about Torque, which is fun, and Holy Fuck's song 'Frenchy's' [2] drew me in. But there's a good little bit of high school drama and politics to set up, and that bit of the trailer isn't cut so well. But then it goes off the rails with shots of murder, aliens, and all sorts of other weirdness.

“SXSW prides itself on taking chances, sifting for films that are the seedlings of the next generation of must-see artists,” said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “This year’s line up is full of emerging voices and filmmakers who transcended the resources they had on hand, often with an alchemist’s touch.”
As we prepare to bring you exclusive coverage from Austin, I went ahead and singled out the 15 films I’m most looking forward to seeing while in town. The descriptions were provided by the SXSW press team,...

Joseph Kahn is no slouch. His new school-based slasher project 'Detention' will premiere this March at the SXSW in Texas and to celebrate his speedy turnaround the first offical still from the movie has arrived online. It features young cast members and obvious slasher fodder Josh Hutcherson ('Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant'), Shanley Caswell, cutie Spencer Locke ('Resident Evil: Extinction') and Aaron David Johnson. Kahn co-scripted 'Detention' with Mark Palermo and, as you may remember, will feature a serial killer by the name of Cinderhella. Not-so-funnyman Dane Cook also stars. Check out the synopsis along with the new still and a pic of Cinderhella below....

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

Music video director Joseph Khan is making his big screen jump with the time-traveling horror comedy called 'Detention'. And it looks good!
Detention is what some would call Back to the Future meets Scream mixed with some John Hughes. It's about a 17 year old who's given detention on the night of her senior prom, add a fictional serial killer who starts killing her friends with a time traveling element mixed in. Detention stars Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook and Shanley Caswell who is pictured above. Khan was recently interviewed by Io9, first he was asked where the idea for Dentention came from.
I wrote the movie with Mark Palermo, a Canadian film critic from Halifax. We started it about three years ago on a trip to the Coachella music festival, where I stated I wanted to make a movie about high school. It took a year to beat out the story,...

"Back To The Future meets Scream, with a hefty dose of John Hughes teen movies." And a female serial killer named Cinderhella.
When I really think about it, there are very few women killers/bad guys/maniacs in horror. Let's name them: Margot Kidder in Sisters, Tamara in Tamara, Mandy Lane in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Mrs. Voorhees, That weird ghost from Darkness Falls, the puppet-lady from Dead Silence, May from May, Samara in The Ring, Marie in High Tension, Annie Wilkes in Misery, La femme from Inside, Jennifer from Jennifer's Body, Ginger in Ginger Snaps, Mother from Mother's Day...
And now I start to run out of examples. What is that, like, 13? I know I have missed a few, probably Asian, but considering there are hundreds of horror films, that's not a lot. And no, the Alien from Alien doesn't count. And I don't count sexual lesbian vampires in Hammer films,...

It seems like only yesterday that Josh Hutcherson and Dane Cook joined the cast of Detention - mostly because it was only yesterday. And the news today is that some lady friends have joined them, with Resident Evil: Afterlife's Spencer Locke and relative newcomer Shanley Caswell joining them. The story sees a group of high school students being stalked by a serial killer during the last stretch of school before graduation, but given that this is described as a horror comedy, expect something that's more Scream than Halloween.Caswell will apparently play a "cute but awkward" girl with a crush on Hutcherson, while Locke's her cheerleader nemesis because deep down we all know that all cheerleaders are evil.Torque's Joseph Kahn is directing, after writing the script with Mark Palermo. Shooting starts in La this month.
