Dan Lin has found his right hand man.
Former Sony head turned producer Doug Belgrad is joining Netflix as vice president of film.
“We are thrilled to welcome Doug to our film team as Vice President of Film,” said Lin in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience to the role from his many years as a respected studio executive, producer and co-financier. We will be leaning on Doug’s great creative instincts, his eye for talent, and his deep relationships across the filmmaking and talent community. We can’t wait for him to get started and look forward to his many contributions as we pursue our mission to make best-in-class films across every genre.”

Netflix believes in the power of faith-based film… and in the power of Tyler Perry.
Netflix has extended its creative deal with mega-producer Tyler Perry, in which he’s meant to write, direct, and produce films and series for the streamer, to now include faith-based movies. Perry and Netflix as part of the deal will recruit one of the original hit makers in the current wave of faith-based movies, DeVon Franklin (“Miracles from Heaven”).
Together, Franklin and Perry will produce several faith-based films for Netflix as part of a new multiyear and multi-picture first-look film deal, Netflix announced on May 6.
The first project under the deal will be “R&b,” a modern-day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz, one of the Bible’s iconic love stories. Set in Tennessee, “R&b” tells the story of a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an...

Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin (Miracles From Heaven) are getting into business with Netflix to make faith-based movies together.
The first film under their new partnership will be R&b, written by Mike Elliott (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan, and described as a modern-day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz, an iconic Biblical love story. Set in Tennessee, R&b follows a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman, only to the love of her life and gain the mother she never had.
The partnership between Tyler Perry Studios and Franklin comprises a multi-year and multi-picture first-look deal. “I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects. I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder everyday, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good.

The Netflix film operation under new head Dan Lin has been reorganised into four silos in a move which Screen understands has impacted 12 staffers.
Ori Marmur will preside over action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi; Kira Goldberg will oversee thrillers, dramas, and family titles; Niija Kuykendall will take charge of faith-based, young adult, and holiday features; and Jason Young will oversee comedies and rom-coms.
Lin started in his new job as chairman of Netflix film on April 1, reporting to chief content officer Bela Bajaria.
He succeeded Scott Stuber, who is setting up his own venture and is producing the Bruce Springsteen feature Deliver Me From Nowhere.

Dan Lin has only been in the new Netflix film chief role for a little over a week, but he’s already making his mark.
Netflix has under gone a reorg under Lin, who took over on April 1 from Scott Stuber, and the existing executives on the feature film team will now be divided based on genre, IndieWire has learned. Each of the different film team leaders will split up a few genres a piece.
Here’s how it breaks down: Ori Marmur gets action, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi movies. Kira Goldberg gets thrillers, dramas, and family films. Niija Kuykendall gets faith-based, young adult, and holiday movies, and Jason Young gets comedies and rom-coms. As a result of the changes, about a dozen individuals from the film team are being laid off, which isn’t uncommon when a new boss comes in.

Netflix’s film division is being reorganized under new film chief Dan Lin.
While about 15 staffers are being let go, the reorganization does not represent a reduction in force — Lin will replace the departing executives in the coming weeks as part of his new vision for his group, which will now be split up by genre.
Included in that new regime are Ori Marmur, who will oversee action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi, Kira Goldberg, who will handle dramas, thrillers and family films, Niija Kuykendall on faith-based, holiday and young adult projects, and Jason Young overseeing comedies and rom-coms.
Lin only took his desk at the streamer a week ago, but has had nearly a month to ponder what the operation should look like. He was named as the streaming behemoth’s new film head in February, replacing Scott Stuber and reporting to chief content officer Bela Bajaria.

Exclusive: A major restructure is underway at Netflix as Deadline is hearing 15 people will be laid off as the company begins a reorganization of its film department. No names were given as to who would be let go, and sources say Netflix could potentially restock with new names, but insiders say new film studio chief Dan Lin delivered the news Monday morning.
The restructuring comes following the news last month that Lin would be replacing Scott Stuber as the head of the film division. Stuber said at the top of the year he would be leaving the post, and Netflix moved quickly to fill the position.
Under the new structure, Ori Marmur will be on action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi titles, while Kira Goldberg will oversee thrillers, dramas and family films. Niija Kuykendall will handle faith-based, young adult and holiday offerings, and Jason Young will oversee comedies and rom-coms.

Netflix’s film division is getting a reorg under new head Dan Lin.
Several sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the features division at the streaming service will now be split up by genre — such as sci-fi, rom-com and faith-based. While Lin officially started his Netflix tenure April 1, sources note that the reorg has been in the works for over a month, with Lin consulting with chief content officer Bela Bajaria, the streamer’s film heads and outside partners.

Scott Stuber, who pushed Netflix to expand into blockbuster movie territory, is stepping down from the streaming service’s top film job to form his own media company.
Stuber will remain with the streamer until March, at which point Netflix Cco Bela Bajaria will temporarily assume his role while she searches for a replacement. Bloomberg first reported the news.
Under Stuber’s direction, Netflix’s feature business aggressively entered the blockbuster space, courting filmmakers such as Zack Snyder, the Russo brothers, Michael Bay and Rawson Marshall Thurber. The era began with the Will Smith starrer Bright, the 2017 film that had a reported budget of $90 million, a hefty number that turned heads at the time but would soon look quaint compared to what was to come.
Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, cost somewhere in the $250 million to $300 million range, while the Russo’ Gray Man cost in the $200 million range.

Schitt’s Creek was a certified cultural phenomenon, earning critical raves, nine Emmy Awards during its final season and massive ratings for Netflix when it migrated to the streamer from its original home at Pop TV. The series also delivered a curious situation for co-creator, show runner and star Dan Levy when he brought a follow-up project to Netflix in the form of a dramatic feature film debut called Good Grief.

The exits of film executives Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke from Netflix late on March 30 shocked the documentary and indie film world. Not only were they Netflix stalwarts — Nishimura joined in 2007, when it was a DVD business, and Bricke joined in 2011 — but also for how admired and how defining of a voice they’ve been at Netflix in the last decade.

Industry will scrutnise evolving content strategy.
Longtime Netflix executives Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke have departed amid a restructure which will have the industry scrutinising its evolving content strategy.
Nishimura was with the company for more than 15 years and led the charge on stand-up comedy and docuseries. She most recently served as VP of independent film and documentary features and worked on the likes of Making A Murderer, My Octopus Teacher, American Factory, and Tiger King.
Among her lower budget narrative credits were Power Of The Dog from Oscar-winning director Jane Campion, and the upcoming They Cloned Tyrone and Nyad.

With the exit of long-tenured film executive Lisa Nishimura on Thursday, Netflix has officially entered its austerity age — whatever that may mean for the streaming powerhouse.
Nishimura’s 15 years at the company have spanned the streaming boom, Oscar wins and multiple restructuring efforts. Noted one industry veteran that has long worked with Nishimura, “It’s a signal that the most thoughtful, taste-driven era is being driven out.”
Under film head Scott Stuber, the film division was long bifurcated according to budgets: tentpoles and indies, with the former sitting around the $30 million to $40 million and way upwards, and the latter sitting below that. Former exec Tendo Nagenda, who joined the streamer from the four-quadrant heavy hitter Disney, oversaw films like the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man and the Extraction films, as well as the Knives Out franchise and The Old Guard. Nishimura’s team oversaw, well, most everything else.

In one of his most challenging projects to date, Michael B. Jordan stars in, co-produces and helped cast the biographical drama Just Mercy through his new Outlier Society banner.
The upcoming Warner Bros film follows the true story of Walter McMillian, an African-American man sentenced to death in Alabama for a murder he didn’t commit. He eventually was exonerated. The film is based on the bestselling memoir of the same name by Bryan Stevenson, a civil rights attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit that provides legal representation to prisoners who may have been denied a fair trial.
Earlier this month, Stevenson, Jordan, producer Scott Budnick and Warner Bros Evp Film Production Niija Kuykendall introduced clips of the film at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Miami.

Exclusive: Michelle Obama isn’t running for any office, but the former first lady can draw a well-heeled crowd that would be the envy of any politician, as was the case last night at the home of CAA’s Bryan Lourd.
Just 48 hours after appearing onstage with Gayle King at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, the bestselling Becoming author was in Los Angeles on Monday. With some meetings in relation to her and former President Barack Obama’s Higher Ground Productions earlier in the day, Mrs. Obama also dropped by the CAA kingpin and spouse Bruce Bozzi’s well-outfitted Westwood pad to talk about the Obama Foundation and its nonprofit work.
“She was amazing,” one attendee told Deadline. “So candid and refreshing.” This was no formal speech get-together, but the ex-fFirst lady did participate in a moderated conversation before the other guests, I’m told.
Distinctly not a fundraiser,...

Desch wrote the 2015 Russell Crowe-Amanda Seyfried drama Fathers and Daughters and is currently adapting Love Canal starring Patricia Arquette for TriStar and Safehouse. He is repped by ICM, 3 Arts and Gang, Tyre Ramer.

“Dear White People” creator Justin Simien will direct Warner Bros.’ untitled Sylvia Robinson biopic.
The movie has been in the works since 2014 when Paula Wagner acquired the film rights to the life story of Robinson, the founder of Sugar Hill Records. The script, written by Tracy Oliver, Malcolm Spellman, and Carlito Rodriguez, details how Robinson became a music mogul after recording 1979’s “Rapper’s Delight.”
Robinson’s career stretches back to being half of the duo Mickey & Sylvia (best known for the 1957 hit “Love Is Strange”). She died in 2011 at the age of 76.
“Dear White People,” a comedy centered on African-American college students, won the special jury prize at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Simien directed from his own script and produced. The movie was bought by Roadside Attractions and spun off into a Netflix series of the same name in 2017. Simien recently completed production on the horror comedy “Bad Hair,...
