The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

Paramount Pictures is planning to remake the 1987 John Hughes classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and they’ve got Will Smith and Kevin Hart in the lead roles. Both actors will also produce under each of their production companies and Aeysha Carr will make her directorial debut as well as write the screenplay. Her previous credits include producing shows like The Carmichael Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the upcoming series Woke.
The original film stars Steve Martin and John Candy as complete strangers who couldn’t be more opposite and are forced to travel together to make it home for Thanksgiving. In addition to being possibly the greatest Thanksgiving movie ever (and a staple in my household), it presents a heartwarming story along with all of the slapstick humor. Candy, in particular, is tremendous and Martin often cites the pic as being his favorite of the films he’s made.

It’s a classic setup. Two guys who could not be more diametrically opposed must share the same odyssey of holiday travel—by any vehicle necessary—no matter how hard one of them tries to get out of it. Yet perhaps what makes Planes, Trains & Automobiles a classic is the surprising amount of warmth and empathy writer-director John Hughes injected into the formula of the 1987 original movie. It’s a delicate balancing act, and one Paramount Pictures looks determined to replicate in a Planes, Trains & Automobiles remake starring Will Smith and Kevin Hart.
As announced via Deadline Monday afternoon, Paramount is moving ahead with a reboot of the 1987 comedy which starred Steve Martin and John Candy, but now with Smith and Hart in the roles of incompatible traveling companions. Additionally, the picture is being written by Aeysha Carr in her first film after working on television shows like...

Will Smith and Kevin Hart will star in and produce a remake of the 1987 road comedy “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” for Paramount Pictures.
The original “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” was directed by John Hughes, and starred Steve Martin and the late John Candy as a pair of mismatched businessmen trying to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving in the face of a variety of travel disasters.
The remake will be a modern update of the original, with Smith and Hart playing characters who are forced to team up to tackle travel obstacles to get home to their loved ones.
Hart’s HartBeat Productions and Smith’s Westbrook Studios are developing the remake. Aeysha Carr (“Brooklyn 99”) is set to pen the screenplay, marking her feature writing debut. Hart and Smith will produce the film alongside Westbrook Studios co-president and head of motion pictures Jon Mone and HartBeat’s president of film and television Bryan Smiley.

Former “New Girl” star Lamorne Morris is back on television in a new semi-animated Hulu comedy series titled “Woke,” which is inspired by the life and work of artist Keith Knight, known for his humorous cartoon handlings of political, social, and racial issues. At the Ctam Virtual Panel Friday, Hulu released a first trailer for the series, giving audiences a look at the hip San Francisco-set series that tackles conventional definitions of Blackness is an absurdly irreverent and comic way.
In “Woke,” Morris plays Keef, a self-identified non-controversial Black cartoonist on the verge of mainstream success, who starts being confronted about racial inequality by animated inanimate objects shortly after he has an encounter with aggressive San Francisco police officers. The incident changes everything, and “keeping it light” Keef becomes woke, hence the title. With a fresh outlook on the world around him, he must now navigate the new voices in...

In Woke, Lamorne Morris plays Keef, a Black cartoonist who is on the verge of success. He is aware of his cultural identity, but doesn’t want it to define him but when he has an unfortunate run-in with the police while minding his own business, things change. At TCA, Hulu released the first trailer of the comedy and co-creators and executive producers Keith Knight and Marshall Todd were joined by director Maurice “Mo” Marable and showrunner Jay Dyer to talk about how the series takes a look at racial identity from a different angle.
The comedy is inspired by the life and work of Knight and although there are tons of laughs and absurdity in the series, it thoughtfully unpacks the experience of Black creatives and whether or not they have to be relevant and timely and just make art. Hulu dropped the trailer for its upcoming comedy series “Woke” on Friday, a semi-animated show that picks apart what it means to become, well, woke.
In the 2-minute, 23-second video, which you can view above, you’ll meet Keef (played by Lamorne Morris), an African-American cartoonist who is just about to break into mainstream success when get he is the victim of an incident of police brutality and his life becomes more animated.
No, really, it actually gets more animated, as you can see in the trailer, which shows Keef start to hear trash cans, beer bottles and walls talking to him after he gets his “ass beat” by the police. Soon his own cartoons are coming to life before his very eyes.

In totally Unrelated news, Freeform has abruptly pulled the plug on black-ish creator Kenya Barris‘ latest comedy offering.
According to our sister site Deadline, Unrelated (fka Besties) — which centered on two estranged half sisters (played by Jordin Sparks and Gigi Zumbado) who are thrown into each other’s lives via an online genetics test — has been axed before a single episode was even shot.
Freeform ordered the sitcom to series last year; the cast was finalized in February. The network is expected to redevelop the premise with a new writer.
The project has experienced its fair share of growing pains in the past year.

Exclusive: Freeform will not proceed with its straight-to-series order to multi-camera comedy Unrelated, which was fully cast, heading into production. Instead, the project, from Kenya Barris, Ranada Shepard and ABC Signature, will go into redevelopment at the cable network.
Unrelated (fka Besties) has had a complicated road to the screen so far. It was a surprising straight-to-series order off of a pitch announced at the 2018 ABC/Freeform upfront as Barris was leaving Disney for a deal at Netflix. As a result, The Real O’Neals co-creators Casey Johnson and David Windsor were brought in to co-create, write and executive produce the series alongside original co-creator/executive producer Ranada Shepard through ABC Signature, the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios, part of Disney TV Studios. Like he does with all of his existing series, including hit Grown-ish on Freeform, Black-ish and the upcoming Mixed-ish on ABC, Barris remained creatively involved and continued as an executive producer.

Lionsgate unspools the proudly vulgar comic-book adaptation "Kick-Ass" with hopes of an eponymous opening weekend.
A $50 million production, "Kick-Ass" was directed by Matthew Vaughn ("Layer Cake") and features Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz ("(500) Days of Summer") as a foul-mouthed, costumed father-and-daughter duo. Aaron Johnson ("Nowhere Boy") portrays the latex-suited title character.
Lionsgate acquired domestic rights to the film for teen millions in August. Internet buzz for the R-rated action comedy -- stoked by the distributor's online-heavy marketing campaign -- has been building for months, and a bow in the $25 million-$30 million range appears in the offing.
Fanboys are the target audience, but positive word-of-mouth could broaden pic support notably. On the other hand, the film's restricted rating poses a built-in barrier to many prospective teen patrons.
Lionsgate launches "Kick-Ass" on Thursday night, with nearly 1,500 locations programming 10 p.m. and midnight performances. The movie is set for 3,000-plus locations starting Friday,...
