Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams puts a candy-colored lens over the hot pink horror sub-genre.
The color most associated with the horror genre is undoubtedly red. Not only the hue of blood and anger, it’s also the shade of the iconic devil – a masculine figure said to be the source of all evil. But in recent years a new color has emerged to evoke a different kind of rage. Hot pink has become the new tone of female-centered horror. An effeminate variation of blood red, this electric hue combines the strawberry tones of wholesome girlhood with the electric fires of female empowerment.

Dates can go very wrong in horror movies. Carrie White's prom date with Tommy Ross goes up in flames before the last dance, in both Stephen King's novel "Carrie" and Brian De Palma's film adaptation. In Sean Byrne's Aussie horror movie "The Loved Ones," poor Brett doesn't even make it to his school dance after rejecting Lola, who hosts a macabre dance of her own. All grotesqueries of romantic relationships find screen time in the genre.
So when Takashi Miike signed on to adapt Ryū Murakami's 1997 novel "Audition," he picked up on its themes of voyeurism, sexism, and exploitation in the entertainment industry -- its leading man Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) holds a shady "audition" for his next wife, launching the story's events into motion -- but left its nastiest moments for the finale, long after audience is embedded into the mysterious allure of Aoyama's chosen bride,...

“Dune” (Warner Bros.) was the big live action sound mixing winner Saturday night at 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. Coupled with last week’s Mpse Golden Reel win for feature effects/foley sound editing, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic is on track for the Oscar sound win next Sunday.
“Dune” was the frontrunner from the outset for its sonic power and complexity. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. So, rather than relying on over-hyped sounds, the teams conveyed an otherworldly palette that is hallucinatory yet gritty, from supernatural voices that rattle the mind to colossal sandworms that shake the sand dunes of Arrakis.
Meanwhile, the animation win went to Disney’s “Encanto,” the Oscar favorite for animated feature. Likewise, another Oscar favorite, “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures), grabbed documentary. The non-theatrical winner was HBO’s...

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

As evidenced in Stephen King's short story "I Am the Doorway," sometimes it's not what you encounter in space that's scary, but what you bring back with you. John Brumpton in ‘Measure for Measure.’
One of Australia’s hardest working actors, John Brumpton rarely turns down offers – except when he is asked to work for free.
In the past year he has played a rapist in Stephen Johnson’s Western High Ground, a gunslinger in the second season of Mystery Road, Hugo Weaving’s protector in Paul Ireland’s Measure for Measure and a worried dad in Jamie Helmer and Michael Leonard’s short The Diver, which premieres in competition in Venice.
IMDb lists 95 credits for the actor who made his screen debut in The Flying Doctors in 1989 and took up the profession after working as a surveyor and professional boxer.
“It’s a tough industry and surviving this long is an achievement,” he tells If. “My approach is: ‘Just be yourself.’”

Heath Davis (L) on the set of ‘Locusts.’
Seventy Australian filmmakers have joined a co-operative aimed at supporting each other’s work and fostering awareness of Aussie films.
The initiative is the brainchild of writer-director Heath Davis, who made his debut with Broke, followed by Book Week and, due to open later this year, suspense drama Locusts.
The group started coalescing before Christmas and rapidly gained members among established directors as well as those with one or two features under their belt. The working title is Cinegar Bar (a play on a cigar bar that Davis used to frequent in Vancouver).
He had the idea after talking to veteran cinematographer John Seale, who told him that when he started out, all the DPs knew and supported each other and formed lasting friendships.

Look, I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn when I say that 2017 was a garbage year for a lot of people, but it’s important to note that periods of turmoil often produce meaningful horror movies. For what it’s worth, it looks like 2017 has done just that, with a myriad of terrific movies from a variety of sources. So, without further ado, here are some of my horror highlights from the last 12 months:
It: I’m going to get this one out of the way early, not because I didn’t love it, but because I’m sure it’s on a lot of people’s lists, and you’ve already heard a ton about it. The huge hype over It actually kept me from watching it at first, as I have that rare disease that repels me from things that a bunch of people enjoy.

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
This October, get ready to rock (queue bending guitar notes). Because Daily Dead productions brings you the rock event of the season with Heavy Metal Halloween (queue random explosion noises). Live, from whatever venue you want to call your house, we’ve got two face-melting, pants-dropping flicks that are sure to leave your guests on their knees worshipping at the altar of the gods of rock (queue the Rob Halford knock-off kind of, sort of, not really hitting a high note).
Okay, don’t worry. I’m not going to keep using the crappy concert ad gimmick, but this feature is going to lean heavy on the heavy metal. Think of this Halloween season double feature recommendation as an opening act and headliner that will make for a great show where metal is the connective thread, but each movie has its own tone and themes that will give at least...

If there is one short film that can speak for itself, evincing its obvious talents through nothing but images, it’s Curve. Even so, we couldn’t pass up on the opportunity of interviewing its diabolical creator, writer-director Tim Egan. While he was visiting the Transylvania International Film Festival we got together over Skype and dove into the dark depths of Curve. (Attention all genre fans: if you still haven’t seen Curve yet, do so now! It’s easy, just click here.) ScreenAnarchy: You have to tell me Tim, what’s the secret to Australia and excellent genre cinema? You’ve got Greg McLean, Sean Byrne, Jennifer Kent, Ben Young, Damian Power, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much talent coming from Australia these past...

Serial killer thrillers that deal with the dark subject matter of abuse and sexual victimization are the cinematic equivalent of playing with fire. Especially if your film is based loosely on real life crimes, as is the case with Hounds of Love, the risk of plummeting into tasteless depths looms large. The greatest feat of Ben Young’s tremendously accomplished directorial debut is that it tackles an easily sensationalized narrative with uncanny poise and a sharp understanding of the power of empathetic identification. Like David Fincher’s breakout success Seven (and likely to become every bit as much of a calling card) while channeling the intensity and family dysfunction of fellow Australian Sean Byrne’s debut, Hounds of Love never shies away from shock. As a counterpoint to...

‘The Devil’s Candy’ Blasts Genre Thrills and the Devil’s Music Into Your Heathen SoulThe director of ‘The Loved Ones’ returns with another intense and suspenseful thriller.
Writer/director Sean Byrne’s debut feature, The Loved Ones, blew festival audiences (including us) away back in 2009 with thrills and suspense born from seeing a character we truly cared about fighting for his life against increasingly twisted and violent odds. It took three years before it actually opened in the Us, but it was worth the wait. Now Byrne’s equally intense follow-up film is finally being released… after premiering at film fests nearly two years ago.
Once again though, The Devil’s Candy is a blistering, intimate, heavy metal-tinged horror/thriller worth waiting for as it drops a loving family into a devilish nightmare where each violent chord brings them closer to a grim and grisly fate.

The director opens up about how his fears inspired the heavy metal infused homage.
It’s hard to adequately describe The Devil’s Candy, Australian director Sean Byrne’s follow up to 2009’s The Loved Ones. The film, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was eventually picked up by IFC Midnight for U.S. distribution, is a pastiche of occult horror, demonic possession, and religious mania, while also offering viewers a truly poignant family drama. It’s a pure treat for horror fans but above all else, it’s metal as fuck — literally.
The Devil’s Candy follows the not-so-ordinary Hellman family who move into an isolated but spacious Texas farmhouse, which may be a gateway to something sinister. Ethan Embry stars as Jesse, a struggling painter, who bonds with his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco), over their shared love of heavy metal music. Shiri Appleby rounds up the family as Astrid, the...

Heavy metal and horror movies go together like chocolate and peanut butter, not least because of their shared fascination with Satan. The relationship between the trio goes back to the days when Ozzy Osbourne and his bandmates decided to name Black Sabbath after the Mario Bava movie playing across the street from their rehearsal space, and Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) revisits it once more for his sophomore horror feature, The Devil’s Candy. This time around, though, Byrne adds a twist by appealing to a growing and under-represented segment of the extreme art forms’ shared fan base: parents.
A long-haired, tattooed Ethan Embry stars as Jesse Hellman, a struggling painter who has passed on his love of all things metal to his preteen daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco). Along with his wife, loving and tolerant hair stylist Astrid (Shiri Appleby), Jesse just bought a house in the countryside...

It was back in 2009 that Australian writer-director Sean Byrne burst onto the scene with his debut feature film, The Loved Ones, igniting a firestorm of positive praise that seemed poised to light the world on fire for this brash and seemingly fully formed talent. But, praise or not, 2009 was a difficult time for the independent film industry, with business models and release platforms seemingly changing by the day and, much like fellow festival darling All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Loved Ones became a victim of the changing landscape, languishing on the shelf for a frustrating length of time while the industry-at-large tried to get their shit together and ultimately squandered all that love and leaving Byrne spinning his wheels for far,...

I’ve enjoyed Ethan Embry’s on-screen work for a long time now, and it’s been great to see him keeping busy these days—from his work on Grace and Frankie, to his appearance on the season 6 premiere of The Walking Dead, to his fantastic performances in genre fare like Cheap Thrills, Late Phases, The Guest, and his recent role in Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy, which arrives in select theaters and on VOD on Friday, March 17th from IFC Midnight.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak in depth with Embry about his work on the film, and he discussed the appeal of playing a conflicted father who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. Embry also chatted about working with Byrne and how he hopes fans appreciate the way the filmmaker’s vision for The Devil’s Candy represents all the metal aficionados out there.

If you missed it on the festival circuit, Sean Byrne's The Devil's Candy, starring Ethan Embry (Cheap Thrills, Fashionista, Can't Hardly Wait), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Heavy, Monster), Kiara Glasco (Maps To The Stars, Bitten) and Shiri Appleby (Unreal, Roswell) is coming to a theater or TV near you this Friday. You can see the film in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms on March 17th from IFC Midnight. Byrne, who previously directed the fan favorite cult horror film The Loved Ones, is back with another fantastic piece of filmmaking. Far from your typical home invasion flick, The Devil's Candy makes you care deeply about its characters. They're not your typical family, for starters. They love heavy metal and weird art, and the family's dad Jesse (Ethan Embry) is a full-time...

News of a new Terrence Malick movie should always be received with cautious optimism, as the media-shy filmmaker has made a habit throughout his career of protracted post-production schedules and delayed release dates. It is a rarity to see a truly unsettling trailer, come along. The first official trailer for Sean Byrne's (The Loved Ones) The Devil's Candy, has been released. To show at AMC Theatres, in the United States, IFC Films will handle this title's distribution. Fans of true horror can take a look at the film's first trailer here. The trailer shows Jesse (Ethan Embry) and a strange art piece. He is unsure of his creative inspiration; but, viewers will know. The film clip also shows a mysterious kidnapper (Ray Smilie), in a red track suit. He shambles about from scene to scene. Both characters meet at a strange, cursed home. I enjoy a good horror flick, and this one definitely looks like it'll be worth checking out! I've been hearing great things about it from people who have already seen it, so I was pretty excited to finally see a trailer. It looks like a great horror film that lives up to the hype. The movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and it currently boasts a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film stars Ethan Embry (Can't Hardly Wait, Empire Records) as "a struggling artist and metalhead who moves with his wife (Shiri Appleby) and daughter (Kiara Glasco) to a new house with a grisly history in rural Texas. Things begin to unravel for the family with the appearance of Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince), a previous occupant of the abode and all-around disturbed-seeming personage."

"It's like it flowed through me. I don't remember painting this." IFC Midnight has unveiled the trailer for a horror film titled The Devil's Candy, a creepy satanic possession tale about a struggling painter who moves into a home in Texas. Ethan Embry stars as the father of a young family who is possessed by satanic forces, creating some freaky artwork. The cast includes Shiri Appleby, Kiara Glasco and Pruitt Taylor Vince. This is from the same filmmaker who made the cult horror hit The Loved Ones, and the film first premiered at festivals a few years ago. It looks intense, though I'm not sure why it took years to be released. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Sean Byrne's The Devil's Candy, originally from EW.com: A struggling painter (Ethan Embry) is possessed by satanic forces after he and his young family move into their dream home in rural Texas,...
