Sometimes Geek Culture – and comics – serve up social commentaries for the world at large. One end of the spectrum is firmly occupied by O’Neil & Adams’ groundbreaking Green Lantern/Green Arrow series from the 70s. The other end of the spectrum has so many more examples: Eightball, Doonesbury, Love and Rockets, etc. Each employ varying degrees of heavy-handedness.
The past week there were two examples that offered insights and lessons…and the sad part is if you’re not careful you might miss both.
The first was the Guy Ritchie’s recent cinematic King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. This film earned the dubious honor of being the summer’s first big flop. And yet it doesn’t seem like summer’s even started yet.
And, of course, this raises the stakes for Warner’s next big movie, Wonder Woman. “That one better be a hit,” thinks every Warner executive.

We asked our writers to recommend graphic novels that deserved more fanfare, and here's what they chose...
Geek tastes running tall and wide, when we asked our writers to recommend favourite books that they felt hadn't received the levels of popularity or public recognition they deserved, in came a heap of suggestions. Too many for one piece, hence us dividing the entries into four separate lists: adult sci-fi, fantasy and horror fiction; graphic novels; children's/Ya fiction; and non-fiction.
We'll let you use the power of your eyeballs to see which one of those lists you're currently reading. And in the spirit of the piece, hope you'll join in by providing your own suggestions to keep the recommendations coming in the comments section. Sharing: it's what makes geek communities great.

What do we know about San Diego, California? SeaWorld & Shamu. But wait, that’s not all! The San Diego Latino Film Festival is back with its 22 nd edition and they went all kindsa crazy. New venue, new vibe and jam packed with the best Latino film has to offer. As one of the last Latino film festivals still standing they really made a point to accentuate the spectrum of filmmakers coming out of Latin America and the Us. San Diego Latino has always been a favorite festival of mine as they run on community love and deserve to be celebrated. So, what happens when you abandon Chilenos, Peruanos, Mexicanos, Domincanos, Argentinos y Venezolanos on a deserted island and only allow them one book, an album, a film and a companion from the movies? Read on.
Bernardo Quesney - "Desastres Naturales" (Chile)
Book: The Cement Garden (Ian McEwan). I don´t know if this is my favorite book but it was very important in my adolescence. I felt very close to the main character. Loved by my friends and hated by our parents.
Film: "El Angel Exterminador" by Luis Buñuel. Buñuel is the film director that I want to imitate. I think he is perfect - his sense of humor, his Mexican films. Nothing is "normal" in his cinema. When I read his memoirs I felt that I knew him.
Album: Love in C Minor – Cerrone. Uff! Cerrone is the soundtrack of my everyday walk. It´s simply marvelous. When I put Cerrone in my bedroom I start to dance like John Travolta as Tony Manero. Naked or with boxers.
Companion: Raul Peralta from "Tony Manero." This is a character I feel respects life. It’s so amazing that Raul knows every phrase of that movie. Being Chilean and imitating something from a distant culture is a representation of the Chilean culture. Our nation is an imitation. It’s like we need role models.
Guillermo Zouain - "On the Road, Somewhere" (Algún lugar) (Dominican Republic)
Film: When people ask me what my favorite film is I usually tend to go for "Jaws," "Seven Samurai"or "The Royal Tenenbaums." In this case however I would have to choose "The Breakfast Club," John Hughes is a genius and this movie in particular he guarantees to keep his audience feeling happy, young and rebellious no matter what.
Album: It would be Paul Simon’s Graceland. I think surviving is all about the mood and keeping it happy in my deserted island. Graceland always makes me smile. I’ve been listening to this album since I was a kid and have never grown tired of it. The whole album has a kinetic feel that exudes, transmits and inspires movement. Paul Simon, by Paul Simon, Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan and Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround part 1 by the Kinks would follow.
Book: Palomar: the Heartbreak Soup Stories, A Love and Rockets Book by Gilbert Hernandez. The good thing about this comic book is that it will give you an array of things: length, many characters, even more details and above all drama and gossip. Palomar’s community of characters will also keep me company while rescue comes. I spent a year reading this book just because I didn’t want it to end.
Companion: I would have to go with Dr. Who, come on the guy speaks all the languages in the universe, has centuries of experience, has been in all kinds of trouble and has a time machine. His sonic screwdriver doesn’t work on wood though.
Enrica Perez - "Climas" (Peru)
Film: If you twist my arm I'd have to pick Almodovar's "Talk to Her." It's not only one of my favorites but the film has also this fate "anything-can-happen" quality and I'm such a drama lover! It would be perfect to be stuck with it on a deserted island. I would never get sick of it.
Album: Without a doubt: The Very Best of Maria Callas. The voice of this woman and the arias of this album on an island… what can I say?… I would wake up in heaven every single day.
Book: I would pick Ernesto Sabato's On Heroes and Tombs. It turned my life upside down when I first read it as a teenager and every time I've read it again I understood something completely different. This book tends to transform and change with time. It's kind of frightening and fantastic at the same time.
Companion: I read in a past quiz someone picked Mary Poppins… damn! That was a good one!!! But to avoid repetition, I would pick Indiana Jones. I mean, c'mon… do I have to explain why?
Gilberto González Penilla - "Los Hamsters" (Mexico)
Film: There are many films I consider favorites but If I had to take just one film to a deserted Island it would be "Cinema Paradiso" for the simple reason it reminds me of the love for cinema and is a film that I can tire of easily.
Album: It would be a Pink Floyd album. That would make me happy and would be perfect for a deserted island to reminisce of my adolescence.
Book: I had it in my mind to choose between a novel or a book of stories, but for the occasion the ideal book would be Notes on Cinematography by Bresson. It’s a book of small notes and thoughts by Bresson. The more I read it I find different meanings of cinema and life itself.
Companion: It would certainly be without doubt Woody Allen. He’s a director whom I admire and surely on a island it would be fun and full of anecdotes.
Humberto Hinojosa – "I Hate Love" (Mexico)
Book: Count of Monte Cristo . It was my first book when I was a child and I have very good memories of it. I enjoy it every time I read it again.
Album: The Beatles Abbey Road. I've heard it my entire life and I have never gotten tired of it. I think it works on an island. I also listen to it with my wife and kids so it would give me hope of rescue.
Companion: Wall-e. I'm sure we would be best friends forever.
Film: If I'm going to be on an island with Wall-e, I'm sure we will have a great time watching "The Party" by Peter Sellers over and over again which would be my choice of a film.
Andrea Herrera Catalá - "Nena, Saludame Al Diego" (Venezuela)
Film: It is an established fact: I can watch "Streets of Fire" five hundred times, and I'll never get bored. Besides, with this film I would bring a little more music to the island!
Companion: Rob Gordon from "High Fidelity." He is quite talkative and he could tell me tons of stories about his life, his girlfriends, the concerts he's been to... He would bring lots of records inside his head, and anecdotes and fun facts about them. It would be like having a never ending music magazine. We would compose new songs, we would do vocal jam sessions and Air Band contests... Until I wanted to kill him, or maybe the other way round.
Book: Cosimo Piovasco, Italo Calvino's Baron in the Trees. I could find new advice from Cosimo every time I read it, on how to live in peace with myself. This book has love, ideology, adventure, battles, joy and sorrow. Everything mixed up in just one big story. I recall I enjoyed a lot when I first read it. I'll let you know how is it going in reading number 1743.
Album: Bocanada by Gustavo Cerati. It is a gem, an amazing record. It is a pleasure listening to it next to the sea, lying under the sun. Cerati deserves a thousand and one tributes.
Emiliano Romero – "Topos" (Argentina)
Book: I feel the need to mention that this list changes permanently, depending entirely on my metamorphosis as a human being. Tengo Miedo Torero (My Tender Matador) by Pedro Lemebel. I would choose this book because it merges social and political reality with fiction. It depicts sensitive characters that have to cope with desires and ideologies. The book makes me want to embrace every single detail of life. It also encourages everyone to defend their right to be whatever they want to be.
Film: "Les Amants du Pont-Neuf" (The Lovers on the Bridge) by Leos Carax. This film manages to transform ugliness and pathos into beauty. Each scene makes me feel the magic of cinema. It really blows people's minds. The actors play their parts in a grotesque-acting style, yet with profound truth.
Album: Transa by Caetano Veloso. This album makes me feel happy. While I listen to it, I realize that the mixture of the different world cultures is really enlightening. Jazz, Rock, Bossa Nova, Tango, lots of talent and Latin blood.
Companion: Cosmo Kramer from TV series "Seinfeld." I would choose him because he always does what he feels. He never censors himself, nor thinks twice about things. He loves what he does and does what he loves to do, always. Besides, I think that the physical work of the actor is absolutely brilliant.

Sean Gullette, writer and director of Traitors, is known for his many collaborations with Harvard friend and colleague Darren Aronofsky. Playing the lead role and sharing story credit in Aronofsky’s debut feature, Pi, Gullette has since acted in two dozen films, including Requiem for a Dream and Happy Accidents. Now Gullette is bringing his masterful crime drama to Tribeca 2014 as part of a special partnership with Venice Days, where a European film is showcased and selected to have its international premiere at Tff.
Recently, Sound on Sight had a chance to interview Guilette on his thoughts on filmmaking, the impact of strong female leads in today’s cinema, and his views on punk rock music.. For the review of Traitors, check out our coverage of Tribeca 2014.

Image recently announced a Chew/Revival crossover, which is… well… hard to picture until you view the promotional art for the covers, one of which is drawn Rob Guillory-style, the other rendered by Mike Norton. Revival is a “rural noir” about the dead coming back to life; Chew is an ongoing fan favorite about a cibopathic (read: gets psychic visions from food) named Tony Chu. Seeing these two seemingly disparate properties on the same cover is quite a trip.
I’m game to see how the plot plays out. Something tells me it’s going to involve corpse-chewing.
Idw has been doing similar things recently, culminating in this week’s trade release of Mars Attacks Judge Dredd (so far the Martians have attacked Transformers, Popeye, and Kiss, among other properties). Last year they bashed together the heads of Star Trek and Doctor Who in Assimilation.

When reading Love and Rockets New Stories #6, imagine two great musicians trading solos on an album. One musician is about precision, playing a complex, varied but controlled melody. The other one, his brother, is the wild one, long ago giving up on creating music that everyone thought he should and going off in his own directions. Seperately, both musicians create masterpieces within their own little worlds but put them together on the same album, where their pieces play off each other, and you get something special. That’s what Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez are doing in Love and Rockets New Stories #6. Whether intentionally or not, their 25 short pieces in this 100 page book buzz through your brain, highlighting just how different the two brothers are. But pay close enough attention and you start to see the patterns form. Family, history, disappointment and the hope of reconciliation. As the two brothers walk down their own,...

Without a doubt, when I was looking through the schedule for the first day of Stan Lee’S Comikaze, “Vampires In Pop Culture And Myth” stood out as the must-see. This was due not only to my love of monsters, but also to a star-studded panel moderated by Buffy and Angel star Juliet Landau (Drusilla!), who was joined by the masterminds of Grimm, writers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf (who also worked on Buffy and Angel), Mariana Klaveno of True Blood fame (Lorena to you), musician David J (from the bands Bauhaus, Love and Rockets), Gavin Hignight of FEARnet, and Georges Jeanty, the artist for Buffy Season 8, 9, and for the upcoming Firefly series.
The panel came together, in part, due to a feature length documentary in the works from Juliet Landau and Deverill Weekes, a project that will explore many of the themes and topics discussed in the panel. I...

Fantagraphics co-publisher Kim Thompson died at 6:30 this morning, June 19, at the age of 56. “He was my partner and close friend for 36 years,” said Fantagraphics co-publisher Gary Groth. Thompson was born in Denmark in 1956. He grew up in Europe, a lifelong comics fan, reading both European and American comics in Denmark, France, and Germany. He was an active fan in his teen years, writing to comics — his letters appeared in Marvel’s letter columns circa early 1970s — and contributing to fanzines from his various European perches. At the age of 21, he set foot, for the first time, on American soil, in late 1977. One “fanzine” he had not contributed to was The Comics Journal, which Groth and Michael Catron began publishing in July of 1976. That was soon to change. “Within a few weeks of his arrival,” said Groth, “he came over to our ‘office,’ which was the spare bedroom of my apartment,...

We're back again with the third chapter in our ongoing feature on vintage Italian cinema thrillers, and since we've previously covered titles from Lucio Fulci (Don't Torture a Duckling) and Mario Bava (A Bay of Blood), it's time we examined a film from the final member of the genre's “Big Three,” Dario Argento. While Argento's most beloved work is unquestionably the stunning 1977 horror classic Suspiria, which was set in a dreamlike supernatural world, he was previously most famous for his pioneering approach to the giallo genre, beginning with the stylish The Bird with the Crystal Plumage – the huge success of which earned him the nickname “The Italian Hitchcock,” a handle he didn't particularly care for at the time. After that film, audiences craved more thrillers with Dario's eccentric touch, leading to what is loosely described as his “Animal Trilogy,” in that all of the titles include the name of an...

The Victories was one of my favorite comic series of 2012, indie or otherwise. It’s dark, brash, and imaginative. Its superheroes are deliciously deranged. Since the original mini wrapped up with Issue #5 in December, Dark Horse announced that Michael Avon Oeming’s series would be continuing as part of Dark Horse Presents, a monthly comic anthology. I reached out to Oeming about this news, as well as his previous works and creative style.
Famous Monsters. One might say you’re known for your alternative superheroes—Powers (with Brian Michael Bendis), for example. Did this come out of an early fandom of regular superheroes, or do you just tell stories as they come? Do you read a lot of mainstream superhero books?

When I started dating seriously, and by seriously I mean dating women with a goal of a relationship, I tried to get every girlfriend to read comics.
Before relationships, my goal was obvious. After achieving that, my secondary goal was getting up and leaving in the middle of the night. That’s if I had a car. If I was taking the subway or bus I’d stay until the morning with hopes of my date making me an egg sandwich.
Ok, that’s not true. I didn’t hope for anything. I knew I was getting my egg sandwich. There is nothing a woman finds sexier than a man who makes her moo like a cow and if you can get a women to moo like a cow you can get her to do anything.
I’d say, “Make me a egg sandwich.”
She would respond, “How do you want your eggs?...

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying!
Hellblazer No. 295
John Constantine is still on the hunt for his bad apple nephew (and by "bad apple", I of course mean "serial killer"). But this issue is really all about his wife, Epiphany. She wanders away from John in search of "The Hungry Grass." As she steps on the grass she's suddenly gripped with starvation, and we see a little snippet of her past before she makes a deal with ghosts for protection. Then she and John get to the big case at hand, and it's time for Uncle to meet his nephew.
Bag it or board it up?...

From there things get funkier with the classic “Maggot Brain” by Funkadelic, before The Jesus And Mary Chain arrive with the undeniable “Just Like Honey”. The staggering string of songs continue with “Caribou” by The Pixies, “Dog Eat Dog” by Adam And The Ants and the title track by Modern English.
The music featured in I Melt With You plays a big part in the film as the title reference to Modern English’s 1982 single suggests. The story of four male friends who stage a weekend reunion each year is pegged to the...

Sam Humphries is my favorite comic book success story. He’s been a regular at my comic shop for years. I remember his excitement at the Image solicits for Our Love Is Real; I remember the Sacrifice announcements and thrill of getting The Gods Of Mars; I remember his unbelievable nervousness about researching the Ultimate universe shortly after being offered Ultimate Comics Ultimates—a gig he took over from the esteemed Jonathan Hickman. Now he’s churning out properties left and right, including the hilarious schlock-fest Fanboys Vs. Zombies and his own Sci-Fi adventure Higher Earth for Boom! Studios. I tackled him with a recorder at Comic-Con—partly to catch up as friends, and partly to get the goods on his current and upcoming projects. The future of the Ultimates is in capable hands.

The Con defies any overarching narrative, so I've simply picked out some favourite moments – and it'd be great to hear yours
And so Comic-Con wraps for another year. As the costumes are packed away, stalls dismantled and banners folded how do you summarise five days of myriad deal-making, networking, announcements, interviews, previews, debates, awards?
Short answer: you don't.
The Con, as aficionados call it, defies any overarching narrative. Spider-Man couldn't weave a web around all the strands. All you can do is pick out some highlights. Here goes.
Joss Whedon, as expected, basked in Firefly and Avengers glory. Such is his following that no one batted an eyelid at the prospect of him starring in front of the camera in a new web sitcom, Husbands.
An ordinary mortal's head would swell to frightening dimensions from the acclaim, but Whedon's still seemed like it would fit in the newly unveiled Iron Man helmet.

The Panel: 30th Anniversary of Love and Rockets featuring brothers Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez, moderated by their longtime publisher, Fantagraphic Books’ Gary Groth.
The Big Revelations: In a deal with Comixology, Fantagraphic will finally begin to release 30 years of Love and Rockets digitally. Comic-Con surprised Mario with an Inkpot Award to match the ones previously granted to his more prolific brothers. Jaime told the crowd that Alan Moore was quite taken with the nine-panel grid that he used throughout his Locas story “100 Rooms” and subsequently adopted it for Watchmen. Gilbert named Palomar’s villain, Howard Miller, after fellow cartoonists Howard Chaykin and Frank Miller.

More than 100,000 are expected to attend, but not everyone in San Diego is happy with where the comics culture stands now
Batmobiles, Iron Man costumes, Superman teasers, Spider-man gadgets: the Hollywood marketing machine has put superheroes at the heart of the pop culture phenomenon known as Comic-Con.
Studios are blitzing the graphic novel and entertainment industry's four-day showcase in San Diego, which opened Thursday, with stunts, freebies and previews to keep the spotlight on film franchises worth billions of dollars.
The tens of thousands of fans who queued to caress props, buy merchandise and glimpse clips had no complaint but the extravaganza sparked criticism and unease that comics, the entertainment industry's creative engine, risked withering in the shadows.
Some comic book creators and analysts said Hollywood hype over superheroes, and television networks' promotion of a handful of other characters, were drowning out more literate and original graphic novels.
"I hate it.

Gilbert Hernandez's all-ages work is to be collected in The Adventures of Venus. Fantagraphics Books is reprinting the Love and Rockets co-creator's work featuring the character from his 'Palomar' stories. "A rare foray into all-ages work, 'The Adventures of Venus' was Gilbert Hernandez's contribution to the kids' anthology Measles which he edited in 1999 and 2000," said the publisher. "This super-affordable little hardcover collects all the previously uncollected 'Venus' stories from Measles in which Luba's niece creates and collects comic books, walks through a scary (more)...

Well, we know who we’re voting for and ComicMix will be on hand, covering events and news happening at next month’s Baltimore Comic-Con.
Baltimore, MD (July 5, 2011) — The 2011 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry’s most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented August 20, 2011 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.
Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators – those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Thank you to all that...

Next week -- Cthulhu! Next week?! -- is Comic Con, the annual pilgrimage of geeks, nerds and, yes, doorQs, to the great promised land of San Diego, where we shall worship in fellowship, fun and fraternity.
Or just get drunk.
What's on the schedule for next week? Some of you are headed down. Some of you are watching from afar. For our edification, let's take a look at the released schedule, at some of the important goings on, events and panels happening at the event.
I'm speaking, of course, of the Gay Stuff.
This is a quick list of what's popped up on the schedule. I'll add to it all of the other gayish stuff as it comes in.

Gilbert Hernandez' "High Soft Lisp" hits shelves later this month from Fantagraphics Books, and our sister blog MTV Tr3s caught up with the celebrated "Love and Rockets" co-creator to get some info on the book and its origins. Here's an excerpt from the interview:
MTV Tr3s: When are we going to see a Love and Rockets story on the big screen? What about an animated series?
Hernandez: That's something I'd like to see, but I haven't met anyone who is capable of translating my characters to film. There is interest in a Palomar film, but I can't discuss anything about it yet.
MTV Tr3s: Fritz is pretty atypical (in relation to mainstream portrayal of Latinas/Chicanas). She’s bisexual, into punk music and sci-fi. Was she inspired by a specific woman in your life?
Hernandez: Not really. She's in part a combination of situations I've seen women in,...

It's always disheartening when you see musical heroes of your teens and twenties face the reality of the current state of the music biz, because the results are never pretty. Sting songs become credit card commercials. Prince goes on American Idol. Billy Corgan dates Jessica Simpson. Before you know it, you find yourself rocking out to "No New Tale to Tell" by Love and Rockets as it plays in the produce section of the ShopRite, wondering what happened to your youth.
This is how I felt when I saw Ben Folds at the judges' table in NBC's The Sing-Off last night. So what was he doing judging these a cappella show choirs,...

If you're anything like me, there are very few deals enticing enough to brave the Black Friday crowds at various retailers. (In fact, the image at right is what comes to mind when I think about what awaits me at stores' Black Friday sales.) Heck, with the amount of Cyber Monday offers flying around the 'Net today, you no longer have to leave your desk to snag a good price on various comics and comics-related swag.
After spending the first half of the day crawling through the Interwebs and getting suggestions from Splash Page readers about their favorite Cyber Monday comics deals, I've compiled a list of some of the most notable deals I've discovered from the comics side of Cyber Monday madness. From best-selling comics and comic book collections to digital comics, movies, games and assorted merch, it's great to be a comics fan this Cyber Monday.

Every year, Beloit College puts together a list of facts regarding the mindset of the class entering college this Fall—the Class of 2013. Their list, as always, is well worth a read, but this is ComicMix, and we’re here to talk about comics, by gum.
So as we get ready to send them off to college, we wondered: what constitutes the comics status quo for them? What’s normal to these kids born in 1991 (he asks, knowing that being born in 1986 puts him in largely the same boat)? So glad you asked.
The guy who did the above strip had already ended his daily strip and retired by the time these freshmen started reading newspapers. There has never been a Miracleman (or Marvelman) comic published in their lifetime. They have no idea who Don Thompson or Carol Kalish were.Gambit has always been on the X-Men.Spider-Man was always married to Mary Jane.
