Long before he started working as a game show host for NBC, Joe Manganiello played the beloved werewolf Alcide Herveaux on HBO’s True Blood.
It was the best of times for the actor — that is, until it came time to end his five-season run in 2014. In a conversation with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show, Manganiello admits that his departure from the hit drama didn’t come with the closure he would have preferred.
“I thought there was so much left on the table for me,” the Deal or No Deal Island host told Cohen. “The thing about it was they never planned for me to be on the show past one season. I was signed up as a guest star my first season, and when my character really broke and people really loved the character, they were kind of unprepared for that to happen.”

Isabela Merced was already one of the industry’s most sought-after young actors, and then she went on an unparalleled casting streak that includes the likes of Madame Web, Alien: Romulus, Superman: Legacy and The Last of Us season two. She also has her second John Green adaptation, Turtles All the Way Down, releasing this spring, and it happens to be the performance she’s most proud of to date.
On Feb. 14, Merced returns to the big screen in Sj Clarkson’s Madame Web, as her character, Anya Corazon, is one of three future Spider-Women that Cassie Webb (Dakota Johnson) must protect from baddie Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) and his premonition that they’re all responsible for his eventual death. Anya’s Spider-Woman alter ego is named Araña, and due to Cassie’s clairvoyant visions, Merced, along with Johnson, Sydney Sweeney and Celeste O’Connor, had to perform multiple different versions...

“I think a lot of people don’t know what we do because a lot is done behind closed doors. And I think what’s great about what we do is that we really are affecting how a movie’s going to turn out, and that’s very exciting,” reveals casting director Victoria Thomas. She earned an Emmy nomination casting the hit drama “The Last of Us” for HBO. It’s a project she says needed the right mix of known and unknown talent to capture the essence of the post-apocalyptic world that viewers couldn’t get enough of. “From the beginning we wanted to have the ability to introduce new actors into it, but also to sort of honor the game and honor the actors who have been a part of it, and also honor the fans,” she explains. Bella Ramsey is very excited to get started filming "The Last of Us" season two and Ellie's romantic storyline in the second video game, "The Last of Us Part II." In the game, after a five year time jump from the first season, Ellie has a romance with a woman named Dina. In season one, viewers briefly saw Ellie's past relationship with her friend Riley (Storm Reid), but Ellie and Dina's bond is a major part of the second installment.
"Yeah, 100 percent, I can't wait for that storyline," Ramsey told British Vogue about the queer romance in an article published June 13. They added that they think the plot will continue to strengthen their bonds with their fans, who they call their "gay army" who has supported them especially as they've come out publicly as nonbinary this year. “The longest [running] Black family drama on television leaves a legacy of knowing that these stories are worthy, knowing that there’s an audience for them,” declares producer/director DeMane Davis about the legacy that “Queen Sugar” will leave on the TV landscape. For our recent webchat she adds, “It’s not a show that has a lot of bells and whistles. It doesn’t need it because it has these faces. It has this skin. It has this hair and then it has these directors of photography,” she says, “who know how to light that skin, know how to get light into the eyes, so that you see the depths of someone and you see the layers. There’s nothing like this on television.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Gabriel Luna played Tommy, the younger brother of Pedro Pascal’s character Joel, in the first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here), and he is expected to return – and have more to do – in The Last of Us season 2. Speaking with Variety, Luna said viewers can expect to see Tommy experience peaks and valleys, and undergo a de-evolution, over the course of The Last of Us season 2.
The first season of The Last of Us covered the events of the first video game in its entirety, so season 2 (and beyond) will be based on the sequel video game, The Last of Us Part II.
Variety reminds us that in season 1, Tommy “joined the Firefly rebels and lives in a safe, civilized settlement in Jackson, Wyoming”. He is “settled down, married to his wife Maria (Rutina Wesley), and...

Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) have both captured the hearts of audiences with their dynamic, found family bond that lies at the center of "The Last of Us," the HBO series based on the hit video game of the same name. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are fantastic, but the show wouldn't be what it is without an amazing ensemble cast of supporting characters who quietly accentuate Joel and Ellie's transformations from hardened survivors to parent and child.
Though he only makes a few appearances in season 1, Gabriel Luna's (previously known for his underrated performance in "Terminator: Dark Fate") role as Joel's little brother, Tommy Miller, makes a huge impact. Living with the trauma of surviving with Joel in the early days of the Cordyceps pandemic and disillusionment with his time fighting alongside the Fireflies, he and his partner Maria (Rutina Wesley) created the Jackson commune. “The Last of Us” actor Gabriel Luna is ready to return as Tommy for Season 2 of HBO’s hit adaptation, and he teased a bit of what to expect at HBO Max’s “The Last of Us” SXSW Conversation over the weekend ahead of the Season 1 finale.
Luna plays Tommy, the younger brother of Joel (Pedro Pascal), who joins the Firefly rebels and lives in a safe, civilized settlement in Jackson, Wyo. He’s first introduced in the Episode 1 opening flashback, where Tommy, Joel and Joel’s daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) escape the cordyceps fungus outbreak in Austin, Tex. — which is coincidentally Luna’s hometown and the location of the SXSW festival. Twenty years later, Tommy reunites with Joel in Jackson after Joel transports Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country. After dealing with clickers, cannibals, and catastrophic heartbreak, a mere awards ceremony was nothing for ultimate survivors Ellie and Joel. The season finale of “The Last of Us” hauled in 8.2 million viewers Sunday night across HBO Max and linear-hbo, a new series high, despite being scheduled against the 95th Academy Awards broadcast on ABC.
“The Last of Us” finale started at 9 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max; the Oscars started at 8 p.m. Et and ended shortly after 11:30 p.m. Et on ABC. We do not have Oscars numbers — yet — but ABC hopes it did significantly better than even the “Last of Us.” The 2022 Academy Awards drew 16.6 million viewers (though the earliest-available data for the program showed 13.7 million); the all-time low for the Oscars was 10.5 million viewers in 2021.

Spoiler Alert: This contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of “The Last of Us,” now streaming on HBO Max.
“The Last of Us” was officially renewed for a Season 2 by HBO in January, but the creators are planning “more than one season” to tell the much larger story from the video game’s sequel, “The Last of Us: Part II.”
Released on the PlayStation 4 in 2020, seven years after the original game debuted, “The Last of Us: Part II” tells a bigger, more complex story than its predecessor. There are many more characters, flashbacks and action set pieces, and the creators of the HBO adaptation, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, confirmed to GQ that the events of “Part II” will span more than one season.
When asked if Season 2 will include the entire “Part II” story, Mazin said, “No. No way.” Druckmann added, “It’s more than one season.”

Everything happens for a reason, right? This week's episode of "The Last of Us" covers one of the most harrowing, memorable chapters of the original game. After a brief interlude to Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) past, we pick right back up to the 14-year-old taking care of a bedridden Joel (Pedro Pascal), still healing from his wound. Here, the story takes a bold reversal — for now, Ellie is the duo's protector, and it's up to her to make sure they survive this cruel winter.
While on the hunt for food, Ellie comes across David (Scott Shepherd) and James, two shady characters who claim to come from a larger group who make an offer. In exchange for the buck she's hunted, they offer her shelter and supplies. Without revealing her motives, Ellie asks for medicine. While James fetches what Ellie needs,...

Queen Latifah hosted the proceedings, which honored the best in Black entertainment for the proceeding year. Inclusive awards that they are, the Image Awards often give a hat-tip to performers of color who aren’t Black, though: Tenoch Huerta Mejía won Best Supporting Actor for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which also won Outstanding Motion Picture.

Episode 6 of The Last of Us, “Kin,” introduces us to the community of Jackson, Wyoming and the almost normal lives that people are able to live in this post-apocalyptic world. In the video games that this HBO series is based on, we don’t get to see what Jackson looks like or how it works until The Last of Us Part II. True Blood is not returning on HBO.
Despite a new series set in the Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer series universe, the premium cabler has put a stake in those plans.
Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed as much in a new interview with Variety.
Bloys said that despite a few scripts, "nothing felt like it got there," and the series is no longer in the works.
Returning to the universe would be a tough sell because the 2014 series finale didn't exactly go out on the best of terms.
It was a near-unanimously terrible final episode that disregarded the components of the series that made it successful for seven seasons.
Based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the original series focused on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.

Episode 6 of "The Last of Us" was the juiciest yet, including multiple Easter eggs for the next season ("The Last of Us Part II" game) as well as a ton of changes compared to this section of the first game.
There were so many delicious little nuggets for players of both games to feast on, from seeing Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) eventual horse Shimmer to a glimpse of a major character in Ellie's story in the second game. This episode was pivotal for introducing narrative tent poles for the second game's story that will be covered next season. I won't spoil everything — part of the beauty of coming to this franchise via the TV series is that you can discover the story for the first time as players did years ago.
But as a player, I'll simply say that this episode is...

Donna Summer could hit notes more thrillingly beautiful than any other pop singer of her time, or since. I’m not sure even Whitney Houston, as great as she was, quite reached the glistening heights that culminate “Last Dance” (though she comes very close in “I Will Always Love You”). Mariah Carey (no relation to me) performs impressive vocal acrobatics, yet to my ear she can’t match the bell-like shimmer of Donna in the higher registers. And Donna in the lower registers – well, the voice thrums with visceral resonance.

The documentary Love to Love You, Donna Summer, about one of the world’s greatest pop stars, constitutes a kind of duet – between two filmmakers. The film, making its world premiere in Berlin, comes from directors Roger Ross Williams and Brooklyn Sudano, daughter of the subject of the film, the legendary Donna Summer.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 1, Episode 6, “Kin.”]
Across its first season, “The Last of Us” has told the story of people figuring out how to continue life after the unthinkable. Some of the HBO series’ core characters have devoted their lives to making sure that a massive global tragedy is less of an end than a new beginning. The context is different, but the newest episode “Kin” runs parallel to the last entry in director Jasmila Žbanić’s filmography, “Quo Vadis, Aida?”
That film details the events surrounding the July 1995 massacre at Srebrenica, which claimed the lives of 8,000 men and boys who lived in the town in what is now present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. The legacy of war, particularly the one that decimated her hometown of Sarajevo for much of the early half of the 1990s, is a subject that runs through much of Žbanić’s work. Rutina Wesley plays Maria on HBO’s The Last of Us and she recently admitted that taking on the role was something terrifying.
“It’s terrifying playing a character that’s been established, even though it’s a game,” she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. “But I also was up for the challenge of playing her in my way and putting my energy on it to see what people would think of that.”
Wesley joined the series in Episode 6 as Maria, the leader of a settlement where Pedro Pascal’s Joel finds his brother Tommy, played by Gabriel Luna. Maria and Tommy are married and have a baby on the way, which is the reason Wesley feels her character gravitated to Bella Ramsey’s Ellie.

Time often gets lost in the apocalyptic soup. Either you lose track of the cultural and rhythmic markers of days and weeks and months or you start to adopt new ways to track them that match up with a changing world. Part of the appeal of “The Last of Us” is that it can have the infinite scroll of a neverending journey and the respites along the way that give the story shape. The wide mountains of Wyoming can stretch out beyond the horizon, but at an oasis, it’s Christmastime.
As this opening season reaches the two-thirds mark, “Kin” offers a glimpse of a potential future, one without state police forces or gunfights over scarce resources. So far, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) have had to make a choice between safety or human interaction. For a precious portion of this...

Reunions are tough, and people probably change more when the world has been decimated by a fungal virus that wants to end everyone.
Joel and Tommy's reunion on The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 6 was intense because it showcased that the characters we've grown to love throughout this series have sides to them they don't even like.
It's not news that Joel and Tommy did terrible things in the past; truthfully, their current mindsets are probably a result of those actions.
On The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 1, Tommy was the younger brother who made mistakes, and Joel helped him out of some of the worst mistakes of all.
It's such a juxtaposition to where their relationship is at on "Kin," which showcases a domesticated Tommy, who is very much in love with Maria.
Tommy, the risk-taker, is gone. He has a family to think about, and you can tell Joel was surprised about it.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Episode 6 of “The Last of Us,” now streaming on HBO Max.
HBO’s “The Last of Us” series just took a major leap to the video game’s sequel, “The Last of Us: Part II,” that fans are sure to recognize: The snowy Jackson, Wyoming, settlement where “Part II” begins was faithfully recreated in Episode 6 — despite not appearing in the original game.
It’s the first major connection to “Part II” that the show has made. Without spoiling the events of the sequel, the wintery Jackson town is a major location in the opening hours of the game. In the original “The Last of Us,” players learn about Jackson from Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Maria (Rutina Wesley), but they mainly stay at the hydroelectric dam encampment and see Jackson only at a distance. This Post Contains spoilers for this week’s episode of The Last of Us, “Kin.”
Late in “Kin,” Joel passes the time on a long ride by explaining the rules of football to Ellie. “So, basically, just moving in one direction?” she asks. “Basically,” he acknowledges. “But violent.” This could perhaps be viewed as a metaphor for The Last of Us, which at times is extremely straightforward, but exciting and crafted at a high level. The series is, of course, much more complicated and versatile than that, as demonstrated by...

Just when you thought all hope was lost for Joel (Pedro Pascal) to reunite with his brother, Tommy (Gabriel Luna), HBO has confirmed they will reunite, and it's happening soon.
The official trailer for The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 6 is here, and it shows an intense reunion.
Joel is it a settlement -- probably Maria's (Rutina Wesley) -- when he looks at his brother and shouts his name.
We then witness a discussion that could highlight some deeply-rooted issues in their relationship.
"Tommy, those things that you judge me for, I did those things to keep us alive," Joel says, but his brother isn't as forgetful.
Tommy replies, "We did those things."
"And there weren't "things". We murdered people."
Throughout The Last of Us Season 1, Joel told Ellie he would pass her over to Tommy, who would be able to get her to the Fireflies.

When The Walking Dead debuted on AMC in 2010, it was a revelation: a high-octane thriller set during a zombie apocalypse that was grimmer and gorier than anything we’d ever seen on TV. But after eleven seasons, several spinoffs and countless knockoffs, the entire zombie genre started to feel like it was on its last undead legs. Thanks to HBO’s new series The Last of Us, though, it’s showing surprising signs of life. Masterfully tense and deeply emotional, The Last of Us (debuting this Sunday at 9/8c; I’ve seen the first three episodes) delivers all the nail-biting...

“The Last of Us” is considered one of the best video games in recent memory, if not of all time. Created by Naughty Dog and released for the Sony PlayStation in 2013, the action-adventure-horror game became a massive hit both commercially and critically — it won Game of the Year over 200 times, a record only beaten by its sequel, “The Last of Us II.”
This is why game fans have been cautiously optimistic about HBO’s “The Last of Us” live-action adaptation. And for good reason — video game adaptations rarely go well..
So what sets this adaptation apart?
Creator and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann is thankfully heavily involved in HBO’s “The Last of Us,” serving as co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer of the series alongside Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”), and together the team has done an excellent job of sticking close to the source material while also breathing life into new characters along the way,...

HBO’s The Last of Us has tapped True Blood and Queen Sugar vet Rutina Wesley to bring to life a character directly from the video games.
Premiering Sunday, Jan. 15, at 9/8c, the series is set two decades after the implosion of current-day society. It centers on Joel (GoT‘s and The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal), a tough survivor, who is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie (Game of Thrones‘ Bella Ramsey) out of an “oppressive” quarantine zone, per the official synopsis. “What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse” across a U.

After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.
Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.
In Variety’s Power of Women cover story celebrating the series’ legacy, the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker said she was “euphoric” about bookending the series as director and insisted she was wholly “satisfied” with the farewell ode.
“‘Queen Sugar’ is the longest commitment I’ve ever had — and we’re talking relationships too — and I did my very best every single day,” DuVernay explained, sitting alongside executive producer Oprah Winfrey. “In the end, there was no sadness; I was just so pleased, so proud.
