One day, Barkhad Abdi was driving taxicabs in Minneapolis and the next, he was on movie sets in Malta and Morocco, making his acting debut opposite Oscar winner Tom Hanks in the high-octane hostage picture Captain Phillips for filmmaker Paul Greengrass.
A few days after cameras started rolling, Abdi dialed up Francine Maisler, the casting director who locked him in the movie playing the lead Somali pirate responsible for hijacking an American cargo ship. “I called Francine and said, ‘I like this. I want to do more. How can I make this my career?'” remembers Abdi, who beat out more than 1,000 hopefuls vying for the role from open casting calls in Minneapolis, Ohio and San Diego, cities home to large populations of Somali Americans. “She asked me how many Black actors I see in movies each year, and I said, ‘Not that many.’ She then said, ‘Whatever you do...

Kevin Miles feels he has nothing to offer. The actor lets that slip less than five minutes after we meet when I ask him why he doesn’t do many interviews. We’re walking to a sports bar a dozen blocks south of Radio City Music Hall, where he’s about to go see comedian Matt Rife, his old neighbor and friend, perform. Miles is dressed in a light gray Alo overcoat, a black Fear of God tee and black Jordans. A pearl necklace with a buskin charm, a replica of one worn by his actress great-grandmother, swings around his neck. It’s all very Los Angeles-guy-in-New York, which he is.
“Right now, I don’t have a lot of other things” — as in roles, projects — “that I feel like are what I want,” the 33-year-old says, with a small, ultra-white smile. “Besides Jake.”

Nikola Jokić and the Denver Nuggets hold their first NBA championship banner ceremony before they get down to business vs. LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the season opener Tuesday, October 25, on TNT. The second game of the doubleheader has Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns visiting Steph Curry, Chris Paul and the Golden State Warriors. ESPN’s NBA coverage opens Wednesday, October 26, with the Boston Celtics in New York to clash with the Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks dueling with the Spurs in San Antonio. ESPN/ABC has a new lead broadcast team with Doris Burke and Doc Rivers joining Mike Breen this season. Superstar Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant is on the move in a trade that will rattle the NBA and send oddsmakers scrambling to reset the odds.
With a 3 Pm NBA trade deadline looming on Thursday, the Nets agreed to trade superstar Durant to the Phoenix Suns. Durant is currently out with a sprained McL, but is expected to return this month.
The deal sends Durant and forward T.J. Warren to the Suns, with the Nets getting back Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks and a 2028 pick swap. They’ll get unprotected picks in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029.
The deal means Brooklyn is heading back into a long rebuild. They had hopes of playing for a title when they brought together fellow superstar guards Kyrie Irving and Durant in the summer of 2019, adding guard James Harden the following year.
But the trio played just 73 games together for various reasons. A disgruntled...

Netflix’s latest sports docuseries, “Bill Russell: Legend,” is sandwiched between its 10-part tennis series, “Break Point,” and its eight-part golf series, “Full Swing,” in a string of non-fiction programming demonstrating the streamer’s commitment to chronicling athletic excellence. Although there have been other docs made about Russell, a Boston Celtics legend who won 11 championships during his career, Netflix is calling this latest nonfiction film about the 6-foot-10-inch center the “definitive documentary.”
In the series, Oscar-nominated documentarian Sam Pollard, who recently spotlighted tennis great Arthur Ashe in “Citizen Ashe,” traces Russell’s groundbreaking career on the court as well as his role as a civil rights pioneer and activist. The doc features interviews with Russell before his death in 2022, personal archival footage and interviews with players including Steph Curry, Chris Paul, Julius Erving, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. A week after the Phoenix Suns’ primary owner was suspended by the NBA for “clearly” violating its workplace standards, Robert Sarver said today that he is “beginning the process of seeking buyers” for that team and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.
Sarver’s yearlong suspension and 10 million fine came after an independent NBA probe into allegations, fueled by an ESPN exposé, that he used racist language and mistreated employees. The investigation also found that he was involved in “instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees,” including “sex-related comments” and inappropriate comments on employees’ appearances.
But the league and Commissioner Adam Silver immediately took flak for what many considered a too-lenient penalty.

Fubo Sports Network, a programming outlet run by streaming TV bundle provider Fubo TV, is expanding its lineup of originals and enhancing its focus on what it calls “the voice of the athlete.”
