Eat Pray Love: "Unctuous. That's the only way I can describe Eat, Pray, Love. Unctuous. Characterized by affected, exaggerated, or insincere earnestness. I didn't buy it. I didn't read the source material, so I can't speak to the book. But this Elizabeth Gilbert -- the one in the movie -- I don't see how anyone can relate to that character. Putting aside the white privilege that Courtney ranted to eloquently about yesterday, there's also the notion that anyone could buy into this fortune cookie bullshit. Gilbert is a shallow, self-indulgent, and arrogant woman. This person is not going on a journey of self-discovery, whatever the fuck that is. This person is abandoning her life. Instead of confronting her problems, instead of working through them, or processing whatever it is that makes her so inexplicably unhappy, she abandons them. And she abandons a husband who -- at least as he's...

Reviews for independent films are often posted during the week they are released in NYC and La. By the time the movies arrive in the mid- and small-markets, the notices are forgotten. This weekly feature will feature previously published blurbs from indie flicks playing in Portland, Oregon (mid-market) and Portland, Maine (small-market), representing what's also likely playing in similar cities, so that indie fans in smaller markets know what's worth visiting.

Few directors have enjoyed hot streaks as smoldering as Rob Reiner's. His credits behind the camera include instant classics like Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and The Bucket List. He's comfortable in any genre, from horror (Misery) and comedy (This Is Spinal Tap) to serious drama (A Few Good Men). Reiner looks to continue his success with Flipped, a sweet and tender adaptation of Wendelin Van Draanen's best-selling young-adult novel. As the film prepares to open, Reiner called FilmCritic.com to discuss narration, music, and his penchant for telling the same story over and over again.Q: Flipped is the first movie since This Is Spinal Tap where you actually receive a writing credit. A: Yeah, well, I basically have written on every single film I've directed. But usually there is other material that it comes from and other writers involved. Whether it's Aaron Sorkin, Nora Ephron,...

Hollywood’s most jovial, maybe even downright jubilant, director-producer-actor-writer plans to make audiences feel the same heart-swelling joy he experienced while reading Wendelin Van Draanen’s best-selling young adult book Flipped with his stirring and sweet film adaptation.
Rob Reiner, whose work has ventured from gripping coming-of-age tales (Stand By Me) to honest looks at relationship dynamics (When Harry Met Sally) to one of the best music/concert films ever made (Spinal Tap, obviously) keeps it nostalgic with Flipped, a story about first crushes, suburban woes, imperfect parents and, of course, love, as told by two pre-teen narrators; young, love-struck tomboy Juli (Madeline Carroll) and pretty, oblivious Bryce (Callan McAuliffe).

HollywoodNews.com: Rob Reiner’s 1950s/60s period romantic comedy “Flipped” will not be getting a wide release any time soon.
The film unspooled on August 6 in 45 theaters in three markets – Los Angeles, Calif.; Austin, Texas and Sacramento, Calif. generating just under $600,000 through yesterday. Critics have mostly been split on the film giving it a 57% rotten score on the Tomatometer. And with “Flipped’s” weak ticket sales, Warner Bros. is looking to cut back the film’s 29 runs to eight and move it to another market, New York. Typically, films that are more suited for the arthouse perform better in Gotham.
“Flipped” is based on a tween novel by Wendelin Van Draanen about the relationship between two kids, from second grade to middle school, with family drama splashed in the background along the way.

He's directed some of your all-time favorite films, including Stand by Me, This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and he's back with another charming coming-of-age comedy called Flipped, based on Wendelin Van Draanen's bestselling novel. Last week I caught up with legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner over the phone for an interview regarding Flipped and we talked about what goes into his films, his inspiration and connection with stories about our youth and growing up (like Stand By Me) and much more. It was a delight to talk with Reiner and if you're a fan of any of his movies at all, this is must read interview. Speaking of Flipped, I've seen the film and it is wonderful, a definite throwback to his early days of Stand By Me, and it's a great movie to watch with your whole family, or the love of your life,...

Is this all that I have to look forward to?
Three or four decades of looking back to the good old days? While I remain at an age when I can effectively deny the presence of gray hairs, I’m still displeased with this future. When I’m sixty, will I look back or will I look forward? Rob Reiner’s “Flipped” doesn’t help.
This 1960s puppy love story plays as if someone hacked all the locks on the cages holding the lost episodes of “The Wonder Years.” Now they’re scurrying around the Boomer Porn laboratory. Hopefully someone can stop them before they reproduce.
It would be one thing if “Flipped” were an act of sunny but genuine nostalgia. But there are enough out-of-place references to seem like somebody else’s nostalgia. For instance, no one commonly used terms like “visually challenged” or...

If at least one Rob Reiner directed film isn't on your list of favorites, you're not trying hard enough. This is the man who directed The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, A Few Good Men, and Misery. When Harry Met Sally twisted the conventions of the Rom-Com. Whether you love or hate it, its effect on relationships has been palpable. Wry sarcasm tempering bittersweet sentimentality are the mark of Reiner's adaptations. The motherfucker made a good Stephen King film. Twice. But he's lost it. Over the last decade, he's been dropping a steady stream of clunky, misshapen, atrocious romantic-comedies on the market, each more clotting and progressively greasier, like the inside of his own arteries. Paired with his Castle Rock production partner Andrew Scheinman, Reiner decided to try to recapture the magic by trying a little old fashioned romance with the kids by adapting Wendelin Van Draanen's Flipped. It's a blisteringly melodramatic,...

Because it shares a time period and sense of nostalgia with the well-remembered Stand By Me (1986), Flipped has been pegged as an official companion piece for director Rob Reiner. There’s some validity to this, especially since the soundtrack is filled with familiar oldies, which also added to the earlier film’s appeal. But Flipped has a different mindset than Stand by Me, which dealt with boyhood camaraderie. It was adapted (by Reiner and his frequent collaborator Andrew Scheinman) from a popular juvenile novel by Wendelin van Draanen that not only touches on the first stirrings of attraction between a boy…...

Flipped is Hollywood's latest attempt to mine the nostalgic gold found in coming-of-age stories set in the mythical golden age of the mid-20th century.
Adapted from Wendelin Van Draanen's "young readers" novel, Flipped is the story of Bryce, a boy who moves across the street from Juli, who seems to have an asphyxiating crush on the new kid in town. Over a five-year period the story flips between both points of view. A twist on "he said/she said" -- or in this case, "he thought/she thought" -- the plot unfolds as their relationship evolves and everything is seen from two skewed perspectives.
Flipped is as much a story of two very different families as it is about a boy and a girl. Despite living across the street from each other, the sensation of class divide is reinforced. Bryce's father clearly values appearances and the importance of reputation,...

In his latest film, Flipped , director Rob Reiner translates the modern-day novel by Wendelin Van Draanen into the world of the late 50's / early 60's, balancing, as he did with Stand By Me , timeless emotions against both positive and negative nostalgic elements. The result is the story of young boy, Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe, a newcomer to Hollywood, but already set for a major role in next year's I Am Number Four ) who has to deal with the unrequited school girl crush of Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll). Told through the dueling narrators of Bryce and Juli, Flipped explores the nature of love, family and the defining moments of youth. ComingSoon.net talked exclusively with Reiner, Carroll and supporting cast members John Mahoney (Chet Duncan, Bryce's grandfather), Rebecca De...

Rebecca De Mornay says she couldn't be prouder of her new film Flipped.
"It was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had and one of the stories that I've been most proud of being a part of in all the films I've done," she explained at the film's La premiere.
De Mornay, 50, added: "When I read the script I was so moved, I cried and I thought it was probably the best script I'd read in 10 years."
Rob Reiner directs a predominantly young cast in the coming-of-age romantic comedy, which is set in the 60s, and Rebecca plays the mum of one of the lead characters.
Based on the novel of the same name by Wendelin Van Draanen, it sees two students, Bryce and Juli, develop feelings for each other despite being total opposites.
The film is released on August 6 in the USA.

See feedback from cast members Callan McAuliffe, Madeline Carroll, John Mahony, Anthony Edwards, Aidan Quinn, Penelope Ann Miller and Rebecca De Mornay. Also, director and screenwriter Rob Reiner talks about the film as well as book author Wendelin Van Draanen and producer Alan Greisman. The film opens in limited areas on August 6th followed by a wide expansion on August 27th. Reiner co-wrote the screenplay along with Andrew Scheinman. When second-graders Bryce and Juli first meet, Juli knows it’s love. But Bryce isn’t so sure. Warner Brothers just released the first trailer for the coming age romance set in the 50s called Flipped. The movie is based off the novel of the same name by Wendelin Van Draanen. The film stars Madeline Carroll, Callan McAuliffe, Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Penelope Ann Miller, Aidan Quinn and Kevin Weisman.
The studio plans to have a limited release of the movie on Aug. 6th (Los Angeles, Sacramento, Austin) and has it scheduled to open nation wide on August 27th. After watching the trailer I am not sure I am the main demo for this movie but I found it sort of charming and fun. I like the period setting and Rob Reiner’s ability to grab your heart in a movie. The young actors look like they know they can handle a lot too which is great.

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve seen Rob Reiner step behind the camera (his last was The Bucket List in 2007). And it’s been much longer than that since he tackled one of the genres that made him famous: the nostalgic coming-of-age drama. But given the trailer for his latest film, Flipped, it looks like he’s firmly back in the comfort zone, even if he had to fiddle with the source material to get there.Flipped, you see, is adapted from Wendelin Van Draanen’s novel of heartache, youthful longing and a girl-meets-boy tale that stretches across several years of high school. But in Reiner’s version – for which he’s even written the screenplay, making this his first self-scripted film since Spinal Tap – he’s switched the contemporary setting to the 1950s/60s and split the focus between the novel’s Juli (Madeline Carroll...

Rob Reiner hasn't directed a movie since 2007's "The Bucket List," but he'll be back this summer with an adaptation of Wendelin Van Draanen's novel "Flipped." The comedy follows a pair of high school pals through the late '50s and early '60s, a change from the book, which has a more contemporary setting. Reiner actually wrote the screenplay for this one, something he hasn't done since the classic 1984 mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap." Intrigued? Rob Reiner has perfected the nostalgia infused ensemble comedy, bringing together some smart writing and great actors under his hand to create some of most memorable films of the past few decades.
There are certain shots in this trailer, from his new film Flipped, which effortlessly convey the tug of heart strings and the intangible emotions of being too young to be in love. It’s all quite sweet and it’s great to see Reiner heading back to the big screen, as he adapts the young adult novel by Wendelin Van Draanen.
Madeline Carroll (no, not the Madeline Carroll who appeared in Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps) stars as Juli and is surrounded by an impressive cast including stars Aidan Quinn, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Penelope Ann Miller and Rebecca De Mornay.
It’s charming and doesn’t seek to drown you in sugar, and is the perfect thing for a Friday afternoon.

Rob Reiner has directed classics like The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, This Is Spinal Tap, Misery and A Few Good Men, but he's been on a vicious down slide since 1995. In that period, his most critically lauded film was Ghosts of Mississippi, which has only a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While still commercially successful, it's been far too long since we've seen a really great Reiner film. Perhaps his most recent one will break the streak. Australian actor Callan McAuliffe has booked his first American feature: Rob Reiner's "Flipped" for Warner Bros.
McAuliffe will play the foil and eventual love interest to Madeline Carroll in a comedy adapted from Wendelin Van Draanen's 2001 young-adult novel. Aidan Quinn, Penelope Ann Miller, John Mahoney, Anthony Edwards, Rebecca De Mornay and Kevin Weisman recently were cast as the grown-ups surrounding antagonistic boy and girl neighbors who eventually share a kiss when they reach their teens.
Reiner is directing, and he co-wrote the screenplay with writer-producer Andy Scheinman. East of Doheny topper Kelly Gonda is producing along with Reiner and his producing partner Alan Greisman.
The film is moving toward a late-June shoot in Michigan.
McAuliffe is repped by Wme and Affirmative Entertainment.
