Lena Dunham's only sibling Grace Dunham is opening up about a personal battle with body image, self-acceptance and gender identity.
The 24-year-old writer is one of the nine people appearing in Fullscreen's special season of StyleLikeU's docu-series, The What's Underneath Project – in which subjects get real about their own insecurities and how they found comfort in their own skin while simultaneously (and symbolically) removing layers of their clothes.
For Grace – who originally came out as a lesbian at the age of 17 – the struggle as of late has been understanding which gender to identify with – if any.

Taylor revealed the TV project in an interview about Tangerine due to run in Screen tomorrow.
“My experience was actually way more dramatic than that of the characters in Tangerine,” said Taylor.
“I would be interested to portray that journey. I’m trying to get a TV series started about it. It will cover the struggle pre transition, during transition and after. I have team working on it and I would be an exec producer.”

Following in her daughter's footsteps. Sarah Palin, like Bristol Palin, is now calling out Lena Dunham amid Josh Duggar's molestation scandal. Back in 2014, the Girls actress revealed in her memoir, Not That Kind of Girl, that she touched her younger sister Grace Dunham's body when the actress was 7. Now, Palin is comparing Dunham to the 19 Kids and Counting star's controversy, and calling the two situations "obvious double standards." On Oct. 29, conservative website Truth Revolt accused Lena Dunham of sexually abusing her younger sister Grace Dunham during her childhood. The article, written by Bradford Thomas, cited several passages from Dunham's recently published memoir Not That Kind of Girl as the basis for these allegations. Dunham responded the following day, tweeting, "The right wing news story that I molested my little sister isn't just Lol—it's really f--king upsetting and disgusting." On Saturday, three days after Thomas' accusatory piece was published, lawyers for Dunham sent a letter (obtained by The Hollywood Reporter) to the author and Truth Revolt threatening to take legal action if certain statements were not...

Lena Dunham released a statement addressing the critics that accused her of abusing her younger sister when they were girls.
Critics Accuse Lena Dunham Of Abusing Her Sister
Earlier this week, Kevin D Williamson, a writer for The National Review claimed that Dunham described an instance of sexual abuse in her bestselling book Not That Kind of Girl. Williamson pointed to a passage in which Dunham describes bribing her little sister for affection and being a young girl fascinated with vaginas. This prompted a second article, posted on the right-leaning blog TruthRevolt, titled “Lena Dunham Describes Sexually Abusing Her Little Sister.”
Dunham immediately responded with a cease and desist letter to TruthRevolt and a short Twitter rant, in which she called the allegations “really f—king upsetting and disgusting.”

Lena Dunham is once again speaking out in response to accusations that she molested her younger sister, Grace Dunham. In an exclusive statement to Time, the Girls star further explained, "I am dismayed over the recent interpretation of events described in my book Not That Kind of Girl. First and foremost, I want to be very clear that I do not condone any kind of abuse under any circumstances." She continued, "Childhood sexual abuse is a life-shattering event for so many, and I have been vocal about the rights of survivors. If the situations described in my book have been painful or triggering for people to read, I am sorry, as that was never my intention. I am also aware that the comic use of the term...

Kevin D. Williamson, a columnist for the conservative news magazine National Review, and Bradford Thomas, who writes for the politically conservative website Truth Revolt, have both accused Lena Dunham of admitting to sexually abusing her sister, Grace Dunham. The allegations stem from several passages in actress' recently published memoir, Not That Kind of Girl. In one excerpt, she wrote, "'Do we all have uteruses?' I asked my mother when I was seven. 'Yes,' she told me. 'We're born with them, and with all our eggs, but they start out very small. And they aren't ready to make babies until we're older.'" The second season of "Girls" may have just ended, but Lena Dunham has yet to take a breath. The ever-productive writer/director/actress just released a new short film promoting New York designer Rachel Antonoff's Fall 2013 line. She's the sister of Dunham's boyfriend Jack Antonoff, guitarist for the Grammy-winning band Fun. (The Nyt's power sibling profile is here.) In "Best Friends," Dunham directs sister Grace Dunham and Nyt fashion writer Alice Gregory as too-close gal pals who engage in private rituals, share the same opinions and know almost everything about each other, including how they take their toast. The short-film-commercial, narrated by Adam Driver (Adam on "Girls"), is more precious than Dunham's often uncomfortably frank series, recalling the ingenue days of her "Delusional Downtown Divas" webseries. But as with all her work, including the 2010 indie feature "Tiny Furniture," Dunham continues to explore the terrain of female dynamics. In the season finale of "Girls,...

Lena Dunham as a brand is old news -- her evolution into the unrivaled hipster it-girl has been complete for some time. But now, a cult of Lena seems to be slowly forming as the multi-hyphenate actress-writer-director-producer takes collaborators with her from one project to the next. First, it was Alex Karpovsky and Jemima Kirke who transitioned from “Tiny Furniture” to “Girls,” and now, in a new short fashion video that Dunham directed for designer Rachel Antonoff, her onscreen lover Adam Driver of “Girls” narrates while her sister Grace Dunham of “Tiny Furniture” stars alongside New York Times writer Alice Gregory. As some of you may know, Dunham is currently dating fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff, the brother of Rachel. But now we’ve spent too much time playing connect-the-Brooklyn-celeb-dots and neglecting to analyze this semi-interesting short. The promotional film is a vignetted...

★★★☆☆ Courtesy of award-winning American actor, writer and director Lena Dunham, Tiny Furniture (2010) is a film that will bewitch some - and infuriate many. It's an incredibly self-indulgent, self-important piece, full of kooky, neurotic characters and social awkwardness by the bucket-load, but for fans of Dunham's introverted humour, Tiny Furniture will certainly satisfy the faithful. Set in New York's Tribeca district, Dunham herself plays lead protagonist Aura, a petulant, de-motivated college graduate who moves back home to live with her mother Siri (Lena's real-life mother Laurie Simmons) and sister Nadine (real-life sibling Grace Dunham).

Aura (Lena Dunham) has just graduated from University with a degree in film theory and returns home to her artist mother’s trendy loft apartment in an upscale part of New York. She is aimless and – as also I discovered not too long ago – not qualified for anything in particular, so she spends her time getting a part-time job, arguing with her mother (Laurie Simmons) and younger sister (Grace Dunham), whilst also looking for love in the wake of a bad breakup. It’s a premise which will no doubt strike a depressingly familiar chord with those of us of a similar generation to the 25 year-old Dunham, who also wrote and directed Tiny Furniture. Her debut feature feels autobiographical – a suspicion reinforced by the fact that her mother and sister are played by their real-life analogues. In any case, it feels achingly authentic.

22-year old Aura (Dunham) returns home from university to her artist mother’s Tribeca loft with: a useless film theory degree, 357 hits on her YouTube page, a boyfriend who’s left her to find himself, a dying hamster and her tail between her legs. Luckily, her train wreck childhood best friend never left home, the restaurant down the block is hiring and ill-advised romantic options lurk around every corner. Aura quickly careens into her old/new life: a dead-end hostess job, pathetic Brooklyn “art shows”, drinking all the wine in her mother’s neatly organised cabinets and competing with her prodigious teenage sister. This is the last of my lists of the best films of 2010, and the hardest to name. Call it the Best Art Films. I can't precisely define an Art Film, but I knew I was seeing one when I saw these. I could also call them Adult Films, if that term hadn't been devalued by the porn industry. These are films based on the close observation of behavior. They are not mechanical constructions of infinitesimal thrills. They depend on intelligence and empathy to be appreciated.
They also require acting of a precision not necessary in many mass entertainments. They require directors with a clear idea of complex purposes. They require subtleties of lighting and sound that create a self-contained world. Most of all, they require sympathy. The directors care for their characters, and ask us to see them as individuals, not genre emblems. That requires us to see ourselves as individual viewers,...

Best Male LeadRonald Bronstein"Daddy Longlegs"Beginner's luck? Ronald Bronstein is an award-winning writer-director of indie films. But in writer-directors Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's film "Daddy Longlegs," he makes his film acting debut. Here he plays Lenny, a divorced father of two young boys who has little grasp on parental responsibility and skill, and even less good judgment. When we first meet Lenny, he pompously mouths off to the school principal in a juvenile defense of his two boys. That scene sets our teeth on edge for what's to come. Lenny takes his sons on vacation with a woman he first met at a bar the night before. He brings the kids to his job as a projectionist, then lets them run wild and even operate the projector—badly. Told he can't bring them again, he gives them a wee dose of sedatives that sends them into Stage 4 sleep for days on end.

Tiny Furniture
Directed by: Lena Dunham
Cast: Lena Dunham, Laurie Simmons, Grace Dunham, Jemima Kirke, Alex Karpovsky
Running Time: 1 hr 38 mins
Rating: Nr
Release Date: December 10, 2010 (Chicago)
Plot: Aura (Dunham) is a young woman who returns home from college and doesn’t know what to do next.
Who’S It For? A movie like Tiny Furniture may appeal best to the younger crowd (18-30, perhaps), especially those who can more immediately relate to the mindset and feelings of Dunham’s character.
Overall
Lena Dunham is a hipster’s Nia Vardalos, without the comic potential. Dunham has the same openness with the audience when it comes to her insecurities, and has no issues in putting things out there for us all to see (she can be seen mostly naked in one scene, to make her emotions all the more literal). There is however, an issue. Her story hardly moves.

Chicago – The 24 year-old Lena Dunham is a new and notable voice for her generation of filmmakers, breaking in with her first feature, the memorable “Tiny Furniture.” Dunham wrote, directed and portrays the main character Aura, a newly minted film theory graduate who is going through the time honored process of what to do with her post collegiate life.

Tiny Furniture refers to the props that Aura’s mother (Grace Dunham) utilizes as a working artist in her Soho (New York City) loft. She uses the tiny set pieces as contrast to the larger world, posing her other daughter Siri (Laurie Simmons) in high heels against the set-up. This is the scene that Aura comes home to, not so much welcomed back as tolerated into the household again.

Chicago – The coming-of-age film has evolved over the years, from Andy Hardy to “Splendor in the Grass” to “The Graduate,” up through “American Pie.” Filmmaker Lena Dunham offers her own post-collegiate transition narrative, in the archly realistic and perversely funny “Tiny Furniture.”
Dunham wrote and directed the film, and also stars as Aura, a newly minted film theory degree holder. She comes back to New York City and her mother’s Tribeca art studio, where the specialty is notable photo imagery of yes, tiny furniture, set against larger objects like the high-heeled feet of Aura’s sister. Aimless and clueless, Aura begins a series of relationships which includes a slightly warped childhood friend, a homeless comedy writer that she allows to stay at the studio and a co-worker at the small restaurant where she temporarily is employed as a hostess.

Not everyone has the courage to write a satirical comedy movie based partly on their own narcissistic, self-serving lives, and then ask their family and friends to show their support by starring alongside them in it. But Lena Dunham, a young, up-and-coming screenwriter, director and actress, proved her talent by recruiting her mother, sister and several friends to star in her latest independent movie, ‘Tiny Furniture.’ Dunham shows that unlike her self-pitying, immature character Aura, there are young adults who strive to do their best and can achieve their dreams. ‘Tiny Furniture’ follows Aura (played [...]...

You may recognize the writer/director/star from Ti West‘s The House of the Devil. She will also be in his next film, The Innkeepers. Tiny Furniture also stars Laurie Simmons, Grace Dunham, Alex Karpovsky, David Call, Merrit Wever and Jemima Kirke.
Synopsis: 22-year-old Aura returns home to her artist mother’s TriBeCa loft with the following: a useless film theory degree, 357 hits on her Youtube page, a boyfriend who’s left her to find himself at Burning Man, a dying hamster, and her tail between her legs. Luckily, her trainwreck childhood best friend never left home, the restaurant down the block is hiring, and ill-advised romantic possibilities lurk around every corner. IFC Films has dropped an official trailer for "Tiny Furniture" which is directed by Lena Dunham and starring herself as the main character, Aura. Aura is a 22 years old who just returns home to her artist mother's TriBeCa loft with a useless film theory degree, a boyfriend who's left her to find himself at Burning Man, and a lack of direction.
Aura quickly throws away her liberal-arts clogs and careens into her old/new life, taking a job as a hostess and following ill-advised romantic possibilities. Surrounded on all sides by what she could become, Aura just wants someone to tell her who she is.
"Tiny Furniture" was a winner of Best Narrative Feature at 2010 SXSW Film Festival with some calling it "irressistibly funny" and "unnervingly honest". Laurie Simmons, Grace Dunham and more support the cast ensemble. This indie drama comedy is set to be unleashed in limited U.S.

Director: Lena Dunham Writer: Lena Dunham Starring: Lena Dunham, Laurie Simmons, Grace Dunham, David Call, Alex Karpovsky, Jemima Kirke, Merritt Wever, Sarah Sophie Flicker, Amy Seimetz, and Garland Hunter Aura (Lena Dunham) arrives home – with a film theory degree and no job prospects – to her mother Siri’s (Laurie Simmons) Tribeca artist loft as her 17-year old sister Nadine (Grace Dunham) prepares to pick which college she will be attending next fall. (With unbridled self-reflexivity, Dunham and her real life mother and sister are essentially playing themselves.) Siri is a famous photographer (of miniatures – primarily furniture, hence the title of this film) and it might be said that her two daughters are a wee bit spoiled and selfish. Even when Aura eventually finds a job – as an off-hours “hostess” (read: receptionist) for a neighborhood restaurant – she seems to expect appreciation, or at least acknowledgement, from Siri and Nadine that she...

Tiny Furniture is a remarkably successful comedy, smart and witty, from a young and promising filmmaker. Lena Dunham wrote, directed and starred in this somewhat quirky tale of Aura, a young woman recently graduated from college. Having returned home to her often oblivious and distant mother, she finds her life takes a backseat to her mother’s art and her younger sister’s needs. Aura struggles to find her place not only at home with her family but also in the world, as she grapples with what to do with her life, post-college.
Aura’s mother Siri (Laurie Simmons) is a strange and peculiar woman, devoted to her work over her children, but isn’t fully self-aware of this flaw in her character. Aura’s sister Nadine (Grace Dunham) is a bit of a spoiled brat, hogging what little attention is to be had from their mother treating her own...

I often feel like I've had my fill of movies about twentysomethings, often fresh out of school, who don't know what they want to do and life is so hard and they have to take money from their parents and oh, the poor things. As I get older, my patience with this kind of person -- or character -- dwindles. In Tiny Furniture, however, writer-director Lena Dunham shows us a young female college grad in such a genuine and personal way that it's far more sympathetic than annoying.
Aura (Lena Dunham) has just graduated from college in Ohio and been dumped by a serious boyfriend who left her to go find himself. She finds herself in NYC, living in her mother's spacious combination of home and artist's studio, and bickering with her sister Nadine (Grace Dunham) almost immediately. Her roommate from Ohio intends to move into town and share a place with her,...

Well, I finally saw it! You know what I'm talking about - Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture, the winner of the SXSW Narrative Feature Film Jury Award and SXSW Chicken & Egg Emergent Narrative Woman Director Award. And I think it may have even lived up to its hype. Aura (Lena Dunham) arrives home with a film theory degree and no job prospects to her mother’s (Laurie Simmons) Tribeca artist loft as her 17-year old sister (Grace Dunham) prepares to pick which college she will be attending next fall. (With unbridled self-reflexivity, Dunham, her mother and sister all are essentially playing themselves.) Aura meets Jed (Alex Karpovsky) – a semi-famous You Tube celebrity who is visiting NYC to negotiate a deal for a new television series. Jed is either truly poor or just a moocher; nevertheless, Aura invites him to crash at her mother’s place. Tiny Furniture could be superficially...

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its 2010 feature line-up Wednesday night, and I couldn’t be more excited. The nine day event starts March 12, 2010 here in Austin, Texas, and I’ll be covering as much as I can from start to finish. Though, if it’s anything like last year, I’ll be asleep on my feet by the end of it.
The 2010 list includes 119 films (55 world premieres), but here are a few notables: The previously announced Kick-Ass will start the festivities. Elektra Luxx, the sequel to the underseen comedy Women in Trouble, starring Carla Gugino, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and too many more to name. Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass in which Edward Norton plays identical twins. A documentary titled People vs. George Lucas that I will be seeing. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs. Plus the “SNL” spin-off movie MacGruber in its world premiere, possibly before the MacGyver creator shuts it down.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival and Conference has announced its initial slate of titles. The list is rife with hot world premieres (Kick-Ass), films fresh from Sundance (The Runaways, Cyrus), hot titles from the 2009 editions of Tiff and Cannes that haven't had much U.S. play (Enter the Void, Dogtooth, Trash Humpers), interesting documentaries (Lemmy, The People v. George Lucas) and much, much more. Simon Rumley's Red, White & Blue, which has received much praise on Twitch based on its Iffr screenings, will have its North American premiere.
Midnight programming courtesy of Fantastic Fest is also back with titles like Higanjima, Monsters, Serbian Film, Outcast, and a yet to be announced special film. Keep eye out for SXSW coverage at Twitch, but for now, pursue the massive list below (descriptions courtesy of SXSW).
