A world of vampires, werewolves and wizards is on its way to screens big and small.
Married writer-producers Eric Heisserer (“Shadow and Bone”) and Christine Boylan (“The Punisher”) and production company Hivemind have partnered with game publisher Paradox Interactive to develop the World of Darkness story universe for film and television.
Launched in 1991 with the tabletop roleplaying game “Vampire: The Masquerade,” the World of Darkness universe includes other properties like “Werewolf: The Apocalypse,” “Mage: The Ascension,” “Orpheus,” and “Hunter: The Reckoning,” and has expanded to video games, comic books, novels, virtual reality and card and board games. From the outset, the franchise has set itself apart in the world of science-fiction/fantasy by putting players inside the shoes — or claws, or wings — of a vast and interconnected coterie of monsters who live amongst humanity, and then forcing them to make complicated moral decisions about how to slake their character’s darkest urges.

Oscar-nominated Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, writer-producer Christine Boylan and Hivemind, which produces Netflix’s The Witcher, have teamed with Paradox Interactive to develop a film and TV franchise around the role-playing game World of Darkness.
The World of Darkness universe launched in 1991 with Vampire: The Masquerade. Today IPs under the brand include Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Orpheus and Hunter: The Reckoning which have spawned video games, virtual reality, card and board games, comic books, novels and original tabletop role-playing games. World of Darkness is known for its hybrid of horror, science fiction and fantasy where the protagonists are monsters in complex moral situations.
“The World of Darkness story universe is deliberately and unapologetically inclusive and diverse,” says Boylan. “It has always made a point of including equal gendered characters, protagonists and antagonists of every race, and representation of all creeds – bringing a female and diverse audience to gaming like nothing prior.

Hivemind announced Thursday that it has acquired the rights to “Gideon Falls,” an Image Comics horror title that will be made into an hour-long TV series.
Written by Jeff Lemire & Andrea Sorrentino — who recently worked on DC’s “Green Arrow” and Marvel’s “Old Man Logan” relaunches — “Gideon Falls” follows three strangers in the titular small town: a washed-up Catholic priest, a determined female sheriff, and a conspiracy-obsessed recluse. Though the three have nothing in common, they are brought together as they discover that a forgotten local legend may have more truth than it first appears.
Created earlier this year, the genre-oriented Hivemind’s other titles include Amazon’s “The Expanse” as well as upcoming titles like Netflix’s adaptation of the video game “The Witcher” and the feature film adaptation of the classic children’s horror series “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”

Hulu‘s original content doesn’t get the attention it deserves, but things may change soon as Stephen King and J.J. Abrams join the mix. They’ve announced a series order for the nine-episode event based on King’s 11/22/63. The alt-history novel that surrounds the Kennedy assassination is not only a great story, and one that King himself believes fits the format, it will be an interesting series that may open some doors.
There are a lot of alt-history works that I’d like to see, whether as series or films, and something has to sell the genre to the money people. Plus, Hulu has several fantastic shows, and you don’t hear enough about them. Maybe something that has a lot of roads to attention will pull in a big range of new potential Hulu fans, who will then check out more content.

In one of the biggest commitments ever for HBO, the pay cable network has nabbed Westworld, a drama series inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi movie. The project, from J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot, Person Of Interest creator Jonathan Nolan, producer Jerry Weintraub and Warner Bros TV, has received a pilot production commitment. It marks the first major cable sale for Bad Robot, which had been focused on broadcast TV for the past few years with such series as Fringe, Person Of Interest, Revolution and the upcoming Believe. Written by Nolan and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), Westworld is described as a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin. Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.
