It's time once again for another installment of Rolling Stone's "Everything Index," where we rank the week's pop-culture power players, some of whom aren't even engaged to Charles Manson.
Yes, one week after Kim Kardashian's bottom topped our rankings (and broke the Internet), things are getting back to normal around here...which means we're once again picking fights with minors, poking fun at incarcerated maniacs and making plenty of pot jokes. It feels good to get back to basics.

They say NBC sportscaster Bob Costas is the face of the Olympics but he made fans a bit squeamish when he appeared on the Sochi Games round-up show on Feb. 6 with his eye nearly swollen shut!
We couldn’t help but do a double-take when we saw Bob Costas wearing a pair of Harry Potter-esque glasses during NBC’s premiere broadcast for the Sochi Winter Olympics. But it turns out the glasses were less of a fashion statement and more of a medical necessity for the usually sophisticated journalist.
Bob Costas’ Eye — His Swollen Face At The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony
Talk about terrible timing! We can’t imagine going on television in front of millions of people with a terrible case of pink eye — but that’s exactly what Bob had to do!

You might have seen comedian Bill Burr on Breaking Bad, playing Saul Goodman's redheaded henchman, Kuby. Or during one of his regular appearances on Letterman, Conan and Fallon. But to really get a sense of what Burr's about, you have to see him live – raging about everything from overfed children to racism – during one of his near-endless string of big-venue dates. "I'm an unbelievably flawed human being," says the 45-year-old stand-up. Or, as he put it in a classic bit, "Like, I went to this place and I'm ordering food.

In 1978, Mork & Mindy made Robin Williams the hottest thing on TV. In 1989, Good Morning, Vietnam made him the hottest thing in movies. Now that it's (practically) fall 2013, he's returning to the small screen in The Crazy Ones, a new CBS sitcom from Ally McBeal and Boston Public producer David E. Kelly. Where that will place the 62-year-old often-still-frenetic comedian - who proudly wears his battle scars, including those he earned thanks to problems with the bottle - on the temperature gauge remains to be seen. For his own part, "The idea of having a steady job is appealing," Williams tells Parade for this weekend's issue.

If popular music is any indication, liquor brands like Patron tequila, Hennessy cognac, Grey Goose vodka and Jack Daniel’s whiskey are doing incredibly well. The four were name-dropped more than any other liquor brands in the most popular songs between 2009 and 2011, according to a new study.
Researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health and the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that 23.2 percent of the 720 songs analyzed mentioned alcohol. Of those, 6.4 percent name-checked specific brands.
The genre of music that included the most references to alcohol was rap, hip-hop and R&B (37.7 percent), with country (21.8 percent) and pop (14.9 percent) coming in second and third place, respectively.

Hitting the bars of Kansas with the Rumble Fish star back in 1987
On a day off from playing a bank robber in the film Kansas in 1987, Matt Dillon was keen to drive me around the movie's location, a town called Lawrence in the titular state, despite the expletives scratched large into the paintwork of his car ("Some girl," he shrugged).
Wearing a Jack Daniel's cap backwards, he soon homed in on "the poorest part of town" and cruised and mused on the lives of "drunk and armed folk" on crumbling porches. Speeding into countryside, to a soundtrack of religious radio ("Do you believe in sowing & reaping?"), he exclaimed: "Wheat! As far as your mince pies can see. Feeding a nation!"
I asked what he'd be doing if back in his home town of New York. "The greatest pleasure for me is to grab a Post, read it backwards, sports first,...

Those behind Prohibition saw a ban on the sale of 'intoxicating liquors' as a crusade against a moral evil. But the big winners were Al Capone and the mob
On Saturday, 17 January 1920, the Manchester Guardian reported with mild incredulity on one of the most extraordinary experiments in modern democratic history. "One minute after midnight tonight," the story began, "America will become an entirely arid desert as far as alcoholics are concerned, any drinkable containing more than half of 1 per cent alcohol being forbidden." In fact, the Volstead Act – which prohibited the sale of "intoxicating liquors" – had come into operation at midnight the day before. But the authorities had granted drinkers one last day, one last session at the bar, before the iron shutters of Prohibition came down.
Across the United States, many bars and restaurants marked the demise of the demon drink by handing out free glasses of wine, brandy and whisky.

Those topics are all bookish and ultimately pointless, the kind of things debated by folks who enjoy nothing quite as much as the sound of their own voice, discussion points during shift breaks at the co-op or between courses at winter solstice parties. You know, nerd stuff.
No, today, I want to talk about Nickelback, and their stupendous new single "Bottoms Up," a song that is about nothing more than getting totally sh--faced, and one whose brilliance I am unapologetically in awe of.
To the uninitiated, "Bottoms Up" is one of two singles Nickelback released simultaneously last month, in the lead-up to their sure-to-be-massive Here and Now album. It is...

Band's November 21 album kicks off with two wildly different singles, 'When We Stand Together' and 'Bottoms Up.'

Late last month, ahead of the release of their (sure to be colossal no matter what you think) Here and Now album, Nickelback premiered a pair of singles — the pro-social "When We Stand Together" and the pro-party "Bottoms Up" — which seem to have only one thing in common: Nickelback wrote both of them.
After all, one's a positively massive power ballad with lyrics like "Hand in hand forever/ That's when we all win," and the other is, well, basically about drinking every substance under the sun, a list that includes, but is not limited to: Jim Beam, Jack Daniel's, Black-Tooth Grins — Dimebag certainly would've approved — and, of course, "straight gasoline." You can probably guess which is which.

Plan B has delayed the release of his new album The Ballad of Bellmarsh to finish his upcoming film Ill Manors. The singer explained that the record has been delayed due to the lack of funding for his upcoming self-directed film. Speaking at Jack Daniel's birthday gig in Tennessee, he admitted: "I had to stop working on Ballad of Bellmarsh to finish Ill Manors - it was getting in the way of me finishing the film. "Ill Manors is a machine right now. I spent five years trying to get that film made, and we finally made it last year for, like, no money. I've since sold the distribution of the film to get some money to finish it and I think we've managed to make it feel like a great film. I think it's (more)...

Plan B has admitted that he gained two stone whilst touring America. The singer, who supported a string of Adele's Us shows earlier this year, revealed he has since lost the weight and is "the skinniest I've ever been". Speaking at Jack Daniel's birthday gig in Tennessee, he said: "I spent six weeks on tour with Adele and I did a mini tour of the West Coast. I really enjoyed myself. I went up two suit sizes being there. "I've come back and gone straight into training and lost two stone. I think this is the skinniest I've ever been." Discussing his return to the States, he quipped: "I can feel all the great food and massive portions... I can see myself putting it back on. It's probably a good thing I'm going home again soon." Ke$ha is not only the queen of glitter and Jack Daniel's, but she's also a bonafide rockstar--that is, according to Alice Cooper.
Cooper's new album, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare," the sequel to his platinum 1975 concept album, drops Sept. 13. Cooper not only reunites with producer Bob Ezrin, who produced the first "Nightmare," but he also reunites with the three surviving members of the original Alice Cooper group--guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith-- who appear on three tracks. Other collaborators include Buckcherry's Keith Nelson, Vince Gill ("A Runaway Train") and "Tik Tok" singer Ke$ha ("What Baby Wants").
And if you're asking yourself, 'Why Ke$ha?'--that was Cooper's intention.
"I met (Ke$ha) at the Grammys," Cooper told Billboard magazine, "and I immediately looked at her and went, 'This girl is not a pop diva. She's a rock singer.' She would much rather be...

It's a drunken Saturday morning in Bristol. My head is tormented by a low, buzzing sensation, no doubt caused by the previous night's discotheque adventures. My mouth is reminiscent of a college party aftermath, both in texture and bile-infused sickness; and the copious levels of alcohol consumed are now making themselves known through every pore in my body (seriously, I am sweating Jack Daniel's at this point).
Yet, while the situation is indeed grim, it is inconsequential when compared to that of the Sith Lord depicted before us. Turns out Marshall's escape from Casa Gregson is short-lived. After one night on a cot in Grandma Sandi's Christmas room, he acquiesces to Max's pleas to come home and help handle Bryce. So much for Max's big breakthrough. I guess when he said "call me when you get there" the "so I can guilt you back" was implied.
Marshall is reluctant to return but after a loopy conversation with Grandma Sandi in which she offers him a tin of fruitcake from 1974 (the same year, she explains, that they found that Lucy skeleton in Ethiopia and Grandpa Sandi bought a Samsonite suitcase with wheels on it that he used to pull Max around on) she tells Marshall that he has to love his mother no matter what. And I agree with that, but there's a difference between "love" and "subjugate yourself to."
Max has sounded the alarm because Bryce has killed another alter.

Good Charlotte had been due to perform at a one-off show for Jack Daniel's whiskey, called The Jd Set, on 22 April in Kuta, Bali - but guitarist Benji Madden claimed on April 11, it had been scrapped because of a scheduling problem.

"The show... will be moved to an alternate location at a new time with additional details released as soon as they become available. Sam Attwater has revealed that so excited was he to win Dancing On Ice last Sunday, that he got quite tipsy afterwards.
Bosses had ordered finalists on the ITV show not to drink alcohol in the lead up to the final show and so when the series ended, the after party was said to be quite a wild event.
Sam – who beat off competition from Laura Hamilton and Chloe Madeley on the ITV ice skating show – told The Sun:
“I was drinking Jack Daniel’s and Coke and then after four of those someone offered me a shot.
“We drank and partied a lot, then Footloose came on and Vanilla Ice was filming it all. ”
Sam had already sustained a rib injury during his final week’s rehearsals but he made things even worse for himself when he tried to dance and do the splits for the crowd. He added:...

The devil finds work for idle actors, and this week he's pitchforked Nicolas Cage and Anthony Hopkins into satanic horror movies. One is wildly extravagant and (if you like this kind of thing) immensely entertaining, the other earnestly sober and extremely dull. In the good one, Drive Angry, Cage plays a crazy lowlife cunningly named John Milton (author presumably of "Pair-of-Dice Lost") who's driving from Colorado to Louisiana to prevent a religious cult from sacrificing his little grandchild to the devil as a means of taking over America. Along the way he's followed by a sinister, smartly dressed figure who calls himself the Accountant, a comic-strip version of Ibsen's Button Moulder, impressively played by that cool heavy William Fichtner, who's proof that in addition to wearing Prada the devil also models Hugo Boss. In one astonishing scene Cage has sex with a naked cocktail waitress while swigging from the bottle...

Summary: A movie by, for, and about stupid people.
Here's a true story.
As the lights came up after Sanctum, I realized I was incensed. Not bored, annoyed, or sad. Angry. Pissed. On the way home, I stopped by my local liquor store and bought a bottle of Jack Daniel's. I entered my apartment, dropped my bag, took a slug of whiskey, and proceeded to vacuum the sh*t out of that place. Like my goldfish always said, vitriol is the mother of order.
I have but one positive thing to say about the film: It looks right. Whether by sets, locations, CGI, or the various combinations of all, Sanctum certainly looks like a movie about cave divers. The most imbecilic cave divers imaginable.

With the help of expert mixologists, we create three cocktails -- and the shopping lists for three divinely drinkable gift baskets.
Hot Apple Toddy Savoring George Washington's favorite cocktail is "one of the great pleasures of being an American," says Chad Solomon of the New York cocktail consultancy Cuff & Buttons. To partake, pour 1.5 oz. of Laird's Applejack ($15.99, winechateau.com) into a Bodum Bistro Mug ($14.95, crateandbarrel.com); add a spoonful of Billington's Natural Demerara Sugar ($21 per 17.6 oz. bag, amazon.com); and top it off with boiling water. Solomon also recommends tossing in a few wedges of a "beautifully acidic" Granny Smith Apple that have been wrapped in foil and baked at 400 degrees for 45 minutes, to balance out the mixture's rich sweetness, and then garnishing with aromatic spices such as Fresh Nutmeg and Indonesian Cinnamon Sticks ($9.99 and $4.99, respectively, kalustyans.com). "It's a wonderfully layered mixture," he adds, "like hot anesthesia.

The recent debate here about the cultural import of Jackass fortuitously falls right into a diversion I've been mulling over for some time, one that finally found its impetus the other day when I was taking Mrs. Tater out to dinner and driving down a road in my town that featured a large billboard with a photo of Mr. Rogers on it.
Someone had spray-painted a vaguely (when I say sprayed, I mean sprayed) Hitlerian mustache on him.
I live in a college town, and one of the great things about a college town is that every fall a new crop of roughly 5,000 18-year-olds arrives, in their wide-eyed innocent and absolute stupidity, and they keep the town young.
Which is another way of saying: The town never gets old.
Never gets old.
Painting a moustache on a billboard face? Man, that never gets old. I still laugh.
A hit to the nuts,...

Chloe Mafia has revealed the extent of her misbehaviour at the recent X Factor bootcamp.
The 19 year old Wakefield resident was featured on Saturday’s X Factor show, telling the judges:
“I’m here at X Factor because everywhere I go I don’t fit in properly anyway but I know the place I would really fit in is just on stage. Singing is my passion, it’s what I love to do, I know I can do it good.”
She sang Summertime and Underneath Your Clothes for the panel and after her performance Simon Cowell mused:
“I think that you are unprepared, but I actually think you’re talented. I actually think there is something there.”
Simon and Nicole put Chloe through to bootcamp, but she was later eliminated after she was repeatedly turned up late for rehearsals, or not at all!

The singer, also known as Chloe Mafia, told The Mirror that she did not want to return to the show after being booed during her audition but had been convinced to change her mind by a friend.
