Shay Carl Butler, co-founder of one of the earliest YouTube multi-channel networks, Maker Studios -- which was subsequently acquired by Disney for $675 million and folded into a new entity dubbed the Disney Digital Network last summer -- has left company.
Butler, the proprietor of one of the seminal family vlogging channels The Shaytards -- which has upwards of 5 million subscribers -- is joining a brand new McN from influencer marketing software startup Social Bluebook and Bent Pixels, which helps other companies in the space launch their own boutique MCNs by providing back-end support (as it did in a recent co-venture with talent agency Abrams Artists).
In addition to moving the Shaytards channel -- as well as the Butlers' other channels -- to the new Social Bluebook outpost, which has been dubbed Social Bluebook Community, Butler has also tendered an undisclosed investment in the company, Variety reports, and has been appointed chief marketing officer.

The so-called "queen of shitty robots" is on the mend. Simone Giertz, whose engineering and robotics videos have brought more than 1.1 million subscribers to her YouTube channel, shared a photo of her brand-new scar after undergoing successful surgery to remove a noncancerous tumor on her brain.
Giertz announced in late April that she would need surgery to remove the tumor, which had been sitting atop her right eye for months. In keeping with her sense of humor, she named her tumor Brian and slipped him an eviction notice via Twitter one week before her scheduled operation.
After posting a vlog in which she informed her viewers that she was going into surgery, Giertz emerged safely hours later. She now has the above scar to show for her ordeal. It's a wound that puts her in a rare club on YouTube; Charles Trippy, who once recording his own brain surgery amid a daily vlogging streak,...

When he traveled to Los Angeles in order to film the second season of his YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie, Swedish gamer Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg said he would use daily vlogs to document his adventures in the City of Angels. Instead, the stress of his busy schedule took an unfortunate toll on his psyche, and after completing 14 of his 22 planned vlogs, he decided to cancel his initial plan and take a brief break from YouTube.
PewDiePie’s vlogging series carried the seemingly nonsensical title “Birdabo,” and in the parts of it he did complete, he showcased the off-set portions of his westward trip. At the same time, he was far away from home and the pressure that a daily vlogging schedule requires turned out to be more mentally taxing than he expected. “I’m just really sad about it,” he said in the video announcing his break. “I hope you understand.

The election may be over, but YouTube stars are still using their influence to advance the causes that are important to them. The latest PSA to feature prominent digital content creators is called “We Can,” and it’s part of the “It’s On Us” campaign, which fights back against sexual assault on college campuses.
The PSA, which aired on TV during the November 15th premiere of the MTV program Sweet/Vicious, features a number of top influencers: Jeana of Bf vs. Gf, Casey Neistat, Charles Trippy, Grayson "The Professor" Boucher, K.L. Cao, Chase Jarvis, and Eric Dunn. They are joined by several “heroes” who earned that title by intervening when they witnessed instances of sexual assault. Together, the influencers and the heroes urge viewers into action by reminding them that ordinary people have the ability to stand up for what’s right.

A documentary that goes inside the lives and careers of YouTube stars is now available. It’s called Vlogumentary, and it’s available to YouTube Red subscribers through the YouTube channel of vlogger Shay Carl.
Vlogumentary, which has been in production for years, is the latest in an ever-growing series of films that discuss the growth of the online video industry and the ways in which the relationships between creators and their fans have evolved over time. The doc, directed by Matthew Testa and produced by Shay Carl along with Morgan Spurlock (of Super Size Me fame) discusses several well-known events in the 11-year history of YouTube. It talks about Charles Trippy’s daily vlog streak, the launch of fan conventions like VidCon, and much more in between. Along the way, viewers receive insights from some of the most popular creators on the Internet, including Joey Graceffa, Glozell, and Hank Green.

Before the Ice Bucket Challenge, there was “Super Size Me.” When little-known filmmaker Morgan Spurlock challenged himself to eat at McDonald’s for every meal, three times a day, for thirty days straight, he anticipated the era of viral marketing with purpose. The documentary grossed $11.5 million theatrically in 2004 and ignited an international conversation about the fast food industry.
By appearing in his film as subject and narrator, Spurlock popularized a kind of personality-driven commentary that is now regularly found in another format — video blogging, or “vlogging.” And that’s why he’s a good fit to produce “Vlogumentary,” the first feature film to explore one of the more ubiquitous ways that personalities develop on the site.

The film not only offers fans an intimate look at their favorite vloggers, but also demystifies the strange career path for would-be skeptics.

While Shay Carl Butler is often thought to be the forefather of modern vlogging, it was actually his wife, Colette, who fired up a vlogging camera for the first time -- capturing her husband as he danced around their living room in a black-and-blue unitard. This clip -- and Butler’s snazzy attire -- subsequently inspired the name of their 4 million-subscribers-strong channel, the Shaytards.
This is just one of many insights to be found in Vlogumentary, a feature documentary about the rise of YouTube’s vlogging community, which was announced back in 2013 and premiered last night at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Butler began working on the film with fellow creator Corey Vidal, and the two subsequently raised more than $200,000 from 5,400 Indiegogo donors. In 2015, they brought famed documentarian Morgan Spurlock on board, who agreed to produce the film.

Jeana Smith and Jesse Wellens, the YouTube couple known as PrankvsPrank, announced an original series for YouTube Red last April.
And today, the couple -- who have amassed more than 19 million subscribers across three channels thanks to their uproariously ruthless pranks orchestrated against one another -- unveiled the trailer for Prank Academy. In the forthcoming series, they will go from pranksters to mentors, “teaching [celebrity guests] how to pull off their most ambitious and complicated pranks yet,” according to a press release.
The show, which will feature cameos from YouTube stars Louis Cole, Justine Ezarik, Joey Graceffa, Lilly Singh, Charles Trippy and more, looks a little like the couple's YouTube videos on steroids. In one scene, Singh picks a WWE-style fight in a restaurant as fellow diners look on in horror. In another, Ezarik and Graceffa recoil on the set of a cooking show as a crew members’ clothes bursts into flames.

It’s clear now that Charlie Sheen isn’t secretly taking night courses at the Crispin Glover School of Public Relations or being followed around with a camera by Casey Affleck. Dude is just egomaniacal. Still, the former television star and current Twitterer has at least one redeeming quality. A part of him doesn’t take himself so seriously. At little bit of Sheen knows his tirades, neologisms, awesome and terrible metaphors, and general mania make him look a little silly. And he’s okay with it. That’s what great about the last episode of Annoying Orange. I’m not speaking of any egomaniacal behavior (there’s none of that), but the self-analyss. Like Sheen or the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore, creator Dan Boedigheimer and his special guest YouTubers Shay Carl, Charles Trippy, and thewillofdc are aware. They know the heights of popularity one can reach by...

Justine Ezarik (aka iJustine) has more than 300 million video views and corporate clients from Ge to Intel to Mattel.
Justine Ezarik -- known on the web as iJustine -- posted a video on YouTube this past spring about her desire to live a healthier life. She asked viewers to share their suggestions of what she might do and more than 11,000 responded. She produced five videos about those ideas that were viewed more than 2.1 million times.
YouTube was happy. The video-sharing website paid Ezarik for allowing it to embed advertising prompts at the bottom of the screen and in an adjacent box. Ge was also happy. That's because Ezarik was doing this at the company's request, as part of its Healthymagination campaign. Ezarik...
