Didier Lupfer, the former CEO of Studiocanal, has launched the Paris-based production banner The Media Company with a lineup comprising high-concept films and series, including “The Quest of Fire” and “Front Row.”
The outfit is also developing about 10 feature films, including Russian helmer Michael Idov’s “Aspiration,” which is co-produced with Artem Vassiliev at Métrafilms, and thriller “Override,” directed by Dmitry Glukhovsky (“Tekst”).
Lupfer said he was in advanced negotiations with a high-profile U.K. marketing agency to measure the projects’ potential for young adults and collaborate on developing content for specific niches. “The development phase of each project will be as long as it needs to ensure that we can deliver the right content and concepts,” said Lupfer.

Is Olivier Courson, once a game-changing chairman-ceo of Studiocanal, about to make a big media comeback?
Arte France, bastion of quality European TV, announced June 2 that its president, Veronique Cayla would step down on July 5. Candidates to succeed her, the French press has suggested, include Courson.
Arte France presidency is currently one of the plum jobs in French film and TV. Established in 1992, Arte is a rare case of a bi-national public broadcaster based, moreover, out of the two biggest film-tv powerhouse markets in the E.U., France and Germany. Broadcasting free-to-air in both, paid for by tax payers, and with a cultural remit, it is not exposed to a plunging TV ad market, nor has to meet minimum audience targets, nor sustain a flagging share price. Arte’s France’s market share is small, which allows it to make bold, original programming for two of the most cultured middle-classes in Europe.

Studiocanal is buying the remaining shares that it does not own in European producer Tandem Productions/Studiocanal. The company is acquiring the shares owned by partners Rola Bauer, Tim Halkin and Jonas Bauer.
The Canal Plus Group-owned TV and film firm will now 100% of the company that it first bought a 51% stake in in 2012.
The move will see Bauer gear up to leave the business but she will continue to work on a number of TV projects for the company through a non-exclusive consulting deal. These include Shadowplay, written by The Bridge’s Måns Mårlind, produced by Tandem Productions and Bron Studios for Zdf, Viaplay and Canal+, and On The Verge, written by and starring Julie Delpy and Elisabeth Shue for Canal+ and Netflix.
Canadian Bauer and U.S.-born Halkin established Tandem in 1999, producing big-budget European co-productions, often in English language. Tandem projects included The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End,...

Anna Marsh, the newly appointed CEO of leading European film and TV group Studiocanal, comes off as self-contained and mild-mannered, but her bullish track record at the company and relationships with big-name producers such as David Heyman (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Andrew Rona (“Non-Stop”) suggests she has an iron fist in that velvet glove.
A 12-year Studiocanal veteran, Marsh — who replaced Didier Lupfer as chief executive — knows the company inside out. She started managing international sales in her early 30s, then became executive VP of distribution and, later, managing director of the banner’s U.K. subsidiary. At 40, the sophisticated New Zealand-born, France-educated Marsh now ranks as one of Europe’s most powerful executives in the industry, and one of the continent’s few women in a top leadership position in entertainment.

A movie based on Pippi Longstocking is in early development from the team behind the two “Paddington” movies Studiocanal and Heyday Films, the production companies announced on Wednesday.
Studiocanal and Heyday are working with the Astrid Lindgren Company to develop a film based on the children’s books written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren that were first published between 1945 and 1948. Jeffrey Clifford and Rosie Alison will also produce for Heyday.
The Pippi Longstocking character originates from bedside stories told by Lindgren to her daughter Karin about a girl with boundless energy, red hair, freckles, a free spirit and superhuman strength. The books preach girl power, confidence, kindness and generosity and have been translated into 77 languages with over 65 million copies sold worldwide.

Pippi Longstocking is coming to the big screen. Studiocanal and Heyday Films, who partnered on the successful “Paddington” features, have joined forces with the Astrid Lindgren Company to work up the project.
Longstocking, with her iconic red hair, freckles, strength and free spirit, is the main character in an eponymous series of children’s books by legendary Swedish author Lindgren. Pippi is the strongest girl in the world and totally independent. She is also generous and kind, and she loves to have fun, qualities the producers said are more relevant than ever.
The first three Pippi chapter books were published from 1945 to 1948, followed by three short stories and a number of picture book adaptations. They have been translated into 77 languages and sold more than 65 million copies.

Period dramas rarely break the fourth wall, but for Mans Marlind, the creator-writer-director of Tandem’s “Shadowlands,” “we don’t have to be traditional. Especially with period, you need to be even more modern, to avoid the stiffness of costume drama,” he says.
“Television’s development [is] creating audiences that are smarter, meaning we can be more and more daring, which is what audiences are looking for,” says “Shadowplay” co-director Bjorn Stein. The show has been shooting since April 29 in and around Prague.
“Shadowplay’s” edge and moral ambiguities have attracted more talent. Star Taylor Kitsch recalls his agent, CAA’s Jack Whigham, passing him the first two episodes’ scripts.

In 2008, when Tandem’s Rola Bauer and Tim Halkin began financing “The Pillars of the Earth,” allying with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, they stood nearly alone in Europe in making grand-scale English-language limited series.

Studiocanal is joining forces with Nickelodeon and award-winning producer David Heyman to create a CGI-animated series adapted from its “Paddington” franchise, with actor Ben Whishaw on board to reprise his role as the voice of the beloved bear.

Studiocanal is resuming its search for a U.K. managing director after Elizabeth Trotman was forced to pull out from the role owing to visa issues, Variety has confirmed.
Trotman was named U.K. MD last October, filling the position vacated by Danny Perkins, who is setting up his own business. Trotman was expected to switch over from her role running Studiocanal’s Australasia operation and relocate to London, but ran into family-related visa issues that have prevented the move from happening.
With Trotman staying put in Australia, Studiocanal is looking once more to fill the U.K. role. In the meantime, Studiocanal U.K. CEO Nicola Shindler, to whom Trotman was to report, is assuming those responsibilities, and company CEO Didier Lupfer and the Paris team are also pitching in.
A replacement for Australia and New Zealand had not been announced, meaning Trotman will simply stay there at the helm.

France has shortlisted its potential entries for the Foreign Language Oscar race. Stepping away from the traditional fare, Gaspar Noé’s Climax made the cut. The latest from the Irreversible director scooped the Directors’ Fortnight top prize in Cannes after it blew away critics and was acquired by A24. The story features a group of mesmerizing young dancers who fall into madness after drinking a bowl of LSD-laced sangria. On the other end of the spectrum, late filmmaker Claude Lanzmann is represented with Les Quatre Sœurs which features testimonials from four Holocaust survivors which were not included in his epic documentary, Shoah. Also in the mix are well-reviewed Toronto premiere Mademoiselle De Joncquières by Emmanuel Mouret; Emmanuel Finkiel’s Marguerite Duras adaptation Memoir Of Pain which Music Box released in the U.S. in August; and Xavier Legrand’s Jusqu’à La Garde, about a bitter custody battle, which debuted...

Exclusive: Patrick Melrose Emmy nominee Edward Berger has been set to direct Rio, the Steven Knight-penned psychological thriller that’s in advanced development from Studiocanal, SunnyMarch and Nine Stories. This is the project that I told you about last year with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal being courted to star. Their attachments are now confirmed and they will also produce.
Studiocanal is fully financing and has international sales on the film which Cumberbatch and Adam Ackland are producing under their SunnyMarch banner. Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker are producing via their Nine Stories.
Rio, from the mind of Peaky Blinders, Taboo and Locke‘s Knight, centers on two old friends who meet again in the titular city. One is a journalist, the other a hugely successful financier. Plot details are under wraps, although there is also a strong female lead character.

Colin Firth and Julie Walters have been announced to star in the forthcoming children’s adaptation of The Secret Garden from Studiocanal.
The enduring classic of children’s literature has been adapted by acclaimed screenwriter Jack Thorne, known for his wonderful ability to capture the natural idiom of children, most recently showcased in the smash hit Harry Potter play. Jack has reset The Secret Garden in a slightly later period, removing it from the Edwardian era to 1947, on the eve of Partition in India, and in the aftermath of WW2 in Britain.
Based on the original book by novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett, the story is set in England, The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox played by Dixie Egerickx, a prickly and unloved 10-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents who never wanted her. Canal+ Group General Manager Maxime Saada has been appointed Chairman of the Managing Board, henceforth heading all of the pay-tv giant’s operations. Saada, who joined Canal in 2004, succeeds Jean-Christophe Thiery who becomes Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
That last move is significant in that Thiery will replace Vivendi Chairman Vincent Bollore in the role. Vivendi is the parent company of Canal and for the past few years, Bolloré has been closely involved in its affairs as the company suffered through competition, subscriber losses and executive shifts. Thiery is a trusted lieutenant who has spent his entire media career within Bolloré’s empire.
In February, Canal said it was reorganizing itself around three axes: France (pay and free TV), International (TV outside France) and Cinema (Studiocanal and French/European film acquisitions).
Going forward, Saada will oversee the three divisions which are respectively run by Franck Cadoret, Jacques Du Puy and Didier Lupfer.
