A lyrical portrait of a rural Southern California family’s inner lives, their relationship to their ever-shifting landscape, and their growing alienation with each other, "Medeas" is the acclaimed debut feature of Italian-born filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro. Offering a contemporary variation from the pov of an Italian art filmmaker, on the time-honored tradition of the Greek tragedy, ‘Medea’, Pallaoro’s film stars the remarkable Catalina Sandino Moreno, a Best Actress Oscar nominee for "Maria Full of Grace," and Brían F. O'Byrne ("Million Dollar Baby," "Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead") a Tony Award winner for the Broadway drama Frozen.
The film tells the story of a hard-working Southern California dairy farmer (O’Byrne) struggling to maintain control of his family and his younger, hearing-impaired Latina wife (Moreno) whose interest in her husband and family is beginning to wane, "Medeas" investigates the all-too-human state of alienation and its relationship to the equally human desire for intimacy. It’s an outstanding debut feature for writer/director Pallaoro, whose earlier short film " Wunderkammer" won six international awards and was selected in the official competitions of over fifty film festivals around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival.
Largely based on real events taken from newspapers and court trials, "Medeas" features a ravishing visual style and a contemplative narrative approach that’s immediately reminiscent of the works of Terrence Malick and Michelangelo Antonioni. But Pallaoro’s first film is all his own—an undeniably passionate, personal work meticulously crafted with primal beauty and punctuated with sensational performances by its two leading players.
Following its acclaimed rollout to film festivals around the world, The Vladar Company is excited to presents the limited theatrical engagement of "Medeas" at the Village East theater in New York City beginning December 19th.
The winner of the New Voices/ New Visions Grand Jury Prize at the Palm Springs International Film Festival 2013 for "Medeas", filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro also won the award for Best Director at the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Parajanov Prize for Best Visuals and Aesthetics at the Tbilisi International Film Festival. Additionally, Pallaoro won the UK-Italy Creative Industries Award for Best Innovative Budget at the Venice Film Festival. And for her starring role in "Medeas", Catalina Sandino Moreno won Best Actress in the New Director’s Competition at the Nashville Film Festival.
More information on "Medeas" can be found on at the film’s website at http://www.medeasthefilm.com

Some might consider some of the films I appreciate to be strange, but with ‘Generation Iron,’ I found a documentary film that was completely foreign to my way of seeing the world. Frankly, I wanted to be objective about the film, giving its subject matter the appreciation and interest that it deserves.
Over the years, I have occasionally seen a cover of a body building magazine and been disgusted: The men and woman on the covers look like bloated pieces of bacon, a Bosch like nightmare, a surreal nightmare of human anatomy.
However, this turned out to be an all-around, superb documentary. Still, it is a bit strange to watch: There is something pornographic, something superficial about the imagery, but as I watched it, the movie slowly gained my respect. Why? Well, learning the life stories and goals of the body builders perceptibly opened a door...

Early in the documentary Generation Iron, bodybuilding icon Arnold Schwarzenegger observes that "Bodybuilding falls into this unique category of being a sport, entertainment, being a way of life, and art." It's an uneasy quartet of ideas forced to harmonize within bodies intentionally made freakish and/or beautiful. Director Vlad Yudin spends a year tracking the brutal physical, mental, and spiritual training of seven top competitors (including such all-stars as Phil Heath, Kai Greene, Branch Warren, and Dennis Wolf) for the Mr. Olympia title, and ends up with a gorgeous meditation on age-old existential concerns. As the men work through their regimens and go about daily struggles to balance personal lives and career goals (struggles which take place on farms, in McMansions, and...

Generation Iron examines the professional sport of bodybuilding today and gives the audience front row access to the lives of the top 7 bodybuilders (including Phil Heath, Kai Greene, Branch Warren and Dennis Wolf) in the sport as they train to compete in the world’s most premiere bodybuilding stage – Mr. Olympia. The film is narrated by Mickey Rourke, and features appearances by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Jay Cutler,...

"Each man's body will represent years of focus and concentration." An official trailer has debuted for a documentary titled Generation Iron examining the lives of the top seven bodybuilders and the highly competitive sport of bodybuilding that they compete in. Or rather, the sport they've dedicated their entire lives to. Despite the hardcore, no-excuses nature of bodybuilding this documentary seems to have a softer side, touching upon the drugs, mental challenges and emotional struggles they experience. Mickey Rourke narrates the doc (but not the trailer) and Arnold Schwarzenegger appears briefly as Mr. Olympia. See below. Here's the first official trailer for Vlad Yudin's documentary Generation Iron, in high def on Apple: Generation Iron examines the professional sport of bodybuilding today and gives the audience front row access to the lives of the top 7 bodybuilders (including Phil Heath, Kai Greene, Branch Warren and Dennis Wolf) in the sport as they...

A documentary project we first alerted you to last fall, which features Michael Jai White, and other notables, is complete, and now has an official release date set for September 20th, 2013, likely in limited circulation. It's titled Generation Iron, and is something of a sequel to Pumping Iron, the 1977 film about the world of bodybuilding, focusing on the 1975 Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia competitions, which was maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger's introduction to the world, or at least, the USA. Generation Iron is directed by Vlad Yudin, and is produced by the same folks who brought us Pumping Iron - Jerome Gary, Edwin Mejia, Robin Chang, Eric...

There’s a long history of comic book artists treading into the neighboring world of album cover art especially when psychedelia, counter-culture, fantasy or heavy metal bridged the distance between the art table and the turn table. Usually it’s an art table star — like R. Crumb, Berni Wrightson, Barry Windsor-Smith or Paul Pope to just a few — playing the tourist in turntable territory but the exact opposite is the case with the cover for Head Smash.

Mickey Rourke will be the voice of a body building documentary titled Generation Iron, for the Vladar Co. The doc is scheduled for release in September.
The film follows the world’s top seven bodybuilders as they compete to bring home the coveted “Mr. Olympia” title. Vlad Yudin is directing and co-producing the film with partner Edwin Mejia for Vladar Co., and in partnership with American Media Inc.
Jerome Gary, who produced the 1977 docudrama Pumping Iron, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, is exec producing alongside Ami’s David J. Pecker.
According to THR, this film “explores the widely misunderstood world of bodybuilding.”
Yudin wanted to make a film about body building because he felt there hadn’t been an in-depth account of the sport in a long time.
“There hasn’t been a film dedicated to an in-depth and honest look at the sport of bodybuilding since Pumping Iron,...

As the New York Comic Convention started this Thursday, I was able to get a interview with Vlad Yudin, a Russian filmmaker and producer, who is making Head Smash, a film based on a comic book that Vlad Yudin created himself.
Edwin Mejia, who is producing the film with Vlad Yudin, stated that, “We are basically working on this great visionary piece that Vlad Yudin created with Arcana Comics. Arcana Comics is behind great iconic comics and novels-and Sean O’Rielly is one of the producers on the project as well. Vlad is actually the creator and we’ve been putting this project together for over a year now, and we’re really excited to actually have a first edition feature here today here at Comic-con. Vlad Yudin and Edwin Mejia are set to produce a film version of the sci-fi thriller graphic novel "Head Smash" says Variety.
Erik Hendrix penned the comic which is set in the city of Ares and centers on an orphan named Smash who finds a safe haven with a brutal syndicate. Yudin ("Last Day of Summer ") will pen the film adaptation
Meanwhile, Disney Pictures has won a bidding war for a Christmas-themed action-comedy pitch from writer Scott says Heat Vision. The storyline is being kept under wraps, while John Jacobs is producing.

Dramedy, the mixture of drama and comedy, takes serious subject matter and has yielded some fantastic movies. Bonnie and Clyde took robbery and murder and made it exciting while still keeping its inevitably tragic ending. Little Miss Sunshine made audiences laugh at family dysfunction while still maintaining the seriousness of their troubled relationships. Secretary subverted the romantic comedy with masochism and self-mutilation. Last Day of Summer tried to create a dramedy out of disturbed youth and mass killings. For me, the film was not only a complete failure; their disrespectful treatment of the subject matter left a bad taste in my mouth.

It.s far too easy to just associate an actress with her biggest project at the moment and that.s exactly what happened and what is happening to Nikki Reed. Back in 2003 she was just the newcomer who wrote Thirteen and today she.s simply Rosalie from The Twilight Saga. Not that either is anything less than a fantastic accomplishment, but Reed has quite a lot going on in her career and those projects are certainly deserving of attention as well. I was fortunate enough to chat with Reed about her upcoming non-Twilight release, Last Day of Summer. In that Vlad Yudin-directed film she plays Stephanie, a young woman taken hostage by a disgruntled fast food employee played by DJ Qualls. Qualls. character may be acting like a deranged lunatic on the outside, but deep down he.s just a lonely guy who wants to be treated fairly. Clearly...

Rising Hollywood starlet Nikki Reed ("Twilight") veered from her vampire duties long enough to star in Vlad Yudin's "Last Day of Summer."
The dramedy tells the story of a disgruntled fast-food worker who finally snaps after prolonged harassment and torment from his boss. The last day of summer marks the start of his revenge.
DJ Qualls ("Hustle & Flow," "The New Guy," "Road Trip") and William Sadler ("The Pacific") also star in the film, set for limited release this summer followed by a fall home video distribution.
And of course you can also catch Reed in the very unlimited release of that other film she's in the summer, "Eclipse," on June 30th.

There's little in the film world that reddens my blackened heart more than news of a small-time indie flick getting picked up for a theatrical run. Doesn't matter if it's for a 3,000+ screen run like Paranormal Activity or a one week run at two theaters in New York and La, it just makes me smile to know there are distribution companies out there still willing to take a gamble on movies with very little public awareness. The latest independently produced title to break through the straight-to-video barrier is Last Day of Summer, a dark comedy from newcomer Vlad Yudin.
The film stars DJ Qualls as Joe, a fast-food employee pushed over the edge by a boss, William Sadler, that won't stop tormenting him. So, on the last day of summer, Joe sets his plan for revenge in motion. However, things are quickly derailed when Stefanie (Nikki Reed) catches his eye,...

E1 Entertainment has just announced their acquisition of the North American rights for writer and director Vlad Yudin’s first feature, Last Day Of Summer. The independently produced comedy/drama follows DJ Qualls and Nikki Reed on the very last day of summer. Qualls stars as Joe, an “agitated fast food employee, who has reached his breaking point after being harassed and tormented by his boss.” This last day of the summer season marks Joe’s first day of revenge, but Reed’s sexy Stefanie throws a wrench in Joe’s plans.

Last Day Of Summer, starring Nikki Reed ("Rosalie Hale" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and DJ Qualls, presently exists in film limbo - with no set date for release to either theaters or DVD. It did debut in October's Hollywood Film Festival, however, and is tentatively scheduled for a 2010 release. To promote the film, it seems, as well as the career of a young recording artist, songstress Sabrina went on the set for Last Day Of Summer and took footage of the filming process to compile for her music video to the song "No Rose Petals and Bubblebaths." The video features a bit of behind-the-scenes conversation between Reed, Qualls, and director Vlad Yudin. In the film, Reed portrays "Stefanie," and the m ...
