Warning: contains spoilers for the Shetland Series 7 finale.
Di Jimmy Perez didn’t die! He wasn’t, as many suspected, killed in an eco-terrorist explosion, nor did he leap in front of a bullet to save Cassie, Tosh, Sandy, Billy or any of his other beloved Shetland family. Douglas Henshall’s goodbye after seven series of the BBC crime drama adapted from Anne Cleeves’ book series left his character alive and well and laughing with his new love Meg. Jimmy had resigned from the police, having sacrificed his career for a noble act, and was ready to move on to pastures new.
Shetland will return for series eight with a different lead and a different series-long investigation, but the same picturesque scenery, gentle feel and familiar faces. We break down Douglas Henshall’s final episode and answer Series 7’s questions, from the identity of the killer(s), to what happened...

Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.
Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Before Perez says his final goodbye to the evidence board though, there’s a missing person case to solve, and a host of new characters to interrogate. Here’s who he’ll be meeting…

Popular girl Taylor Fisch (Alison Woods) is brutally murdered by horror film character Cinderhella who continues on a murderous rampage throughout the high school. Amid rampant “post-ironic” allusions to horror films of the last few decades—including Scream and Saw—and a plethora of 90s pop culture references, suicidal Riley Jones (Shanley Caswell) and hipster Clapton Davis (Josh Hutcherson—who is also an executive producer of the film) find themselves embroiled in an attempt to unmask the killer and travel through time to prevent a bomb explosion from destroying the world.

You've heard quite a bit about Joseph Kahn's mindf*ck of a slasher, Detention, which David Harley raved about out of SXSW. While the film is more of a pop culture slap-in-the-face, the slasher starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez and Carrie Wiita is quite violent. Behold a bit of proof in the first blood image below. " 'Detention' tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it's further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students, but they'll have to cut out of detention if they're to stand a chance at saving the world."...

Slasher time travel fest 'Detention' has been acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (Spwa). The Joseph Kahn ('Torque') helmed picture which stars Josh Hutcherson ('Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant') and Shanley Caswell (below) alongside 'not-so-funny'-man Dane Cook will hopefully receieve an official release date sooner now rather than later. Spencer Locke ('Resident Evil: Extinction'), Aaron David Johnson, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez and Carrie Wiita all co-star. Check out the plot and what Kahn had to say on the acquisition below....

At first glance, Joseph Kahn's Detention looks, as I've said before, like it might be just a "post-Scream meta-slasher movie." But the trailer [1] we saw for the film suggested that it is a lot more than that, or at least a lot more crazy than that. Reviews out of SXSW, where the film premiered, were slightly mixed, but the enthusiastic ones were very enthusiastic. In short, I'm hoping that Detention will be a movie that can satiate my hunger for a wild genre movie in the same way that Attack the Block satisfies as a teen-oriented summer sci-fi thriller. We'll all get to see Detention sometime in the coming months thanks to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which has picked up all rights to distribute the film. A press release and a THR [2] news break offer up the news, and the press release giddily repeats one summarization of the film: "an apocalyptic,...

Undoubtedly, one of the most polarizing genre movies of the South by Southwest Film Festival was writer/director Joseph Kahn’s Detention. It’s definitely one of those ‘love it or hate it’ flicks that is filled with flashy images, pop culture references, and quick edits that you’d come to expect from a legendary music video director like Kahn. Like the film or not, audiences can’t deny that Kahn has a style that is most definitely all his own.
Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kahn and his co-writer Mark Palermo while in Austin to talk about their experiences after enjoying the world premiere of Detention at the festival earlier, Kahn’s thoughts on modern horror, and a discussion on some of the homages and pop culture references in the flick.
Check out our exclusive video interview with the pair, and look for more on the film soon.

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

The Detention Movie Trailer has premiered. Joseph Kahn‘s Detention (2011) stars Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson, Walter Perez, Erica Shaffer, Parker Bagley, and Alison Woods. Detention (2011)’s plot synopsis: “a teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. It becomes a race against time to stop the killer and save the world – if only they can get out of detention. The Detention cuts through prom. Most of them don’t have dates anyway.” One of the things that is hilarious about this movie trailer is that director Joseph Kahn makes fun of one of his previous films, Torque. The high school students actually seem to be high school student age in this horror comedy film and very Dawson’s Creek self aware.

Torque director Joseph Kahn has made a very strange-looking teen slasher movie called Detention. The film will soon premiere at SXSW, and the trailer has arrived today. While the opening of the trailer might make you think this is a routine post-Scream meta-slasher movie, be sure to watch all the way through. Because this one goes to some unexpected places by the end. If nothing else, the trailer sells Detention's very high 'Wtf?' factor, and that's pretty great. MTV [1] presents the trailer, and at first I was a little put off. There's an opening gag about Torque, which is fun, and Holy Fuck's song 'Frenchy's' [2] drew me in. But there's a good little bit of high school drama and politics to set up, and that bit of the trailer isn't cut so well. But then it goes off the rails with shots of murder, aliens, and all sorts of other weirdness.

Joseph Khan was originally attached to Neuromancer, but after watching this trailer for his new horror/comedy Detention I must say I'm glad he's off the project and Vincenzo Natali has moved in. Khan's film is a Scream spoof ten years too late and a bad 80s homage rolled together into one big #fail.
On paper it sounds great and is said to be "in the vein of Scream with elements of Back to the Future (time travel is involved) and classic John Hughes teen films from the 80's." But I'm not really convinced by what I'm seeing here.
