Soul and R&b legend Charlie Wilson delivered a delightful, career-spanning set in the latest installment of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
Wilson, a host of musicians, and a cadre of backup vocalists squeezed into the NPR offices for the performance, which opened an apt fitting introduction: “Charlie, Last Name Wilson,” the beatific title-track from Wilson’s 2005 album. After that, Wilson dipped into his deep catalog of classics and performed “Computer Love,” the 1986 single he made with Dayton funk greats Zapp and singer Shirley Murdock.

Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak have joined forces for new band Silk Sonic and they’ve released their video for their first single. “Leave the Door Open” will appear on Silk Sonic’s upcoming album, which they announced last week.
In the retro-vibed video directed by Mars and Florent Dechard, the group performs the smooth slow jam in a studio. The pair trade verses and harmonize alongside their backing band on the Mars-led chorus: “I’ma leave the door open/I’ma leave the door open, girl,” they sing. “I’ma leave the door open,...

The Recording Academy announced the full list of nominees for the 63rd annual Grammy Awards on Tuesday, November 24th, and as always the Best New Artist category boasts a compelling mix of budding stars, critical favorites, and a couple of sleeper hits.
The biggest name on this year’s list is undeniably Megan Thee Stallion, and the only other artist up for the award who scored a bona fide pop hit in 2020 is Doja Cat. Indie darlings on differing ends of the musical spectrum, singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers and DJ-producer Kaytranada,...

Two years ago, Jane Chika Oranika posted a Twitter video of a freestyle rap verse admonishing Kanye West’s political antics — over West’s own “Jesus Walks” beat, no less. It’s been viewed more than 6 million times. But the 23-year-old from Montgomery, Alabama, says that even if she hadn’t gone viral for her hip-hop songwriting, she would’ve found another way to get her activism across to the world.

Tyler, the Creator made his debut on the Grammy stage to perform “Earfquake” and “New Magic Wand” alongside the R&b luminaries Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men.
Wilson and Boyz II Men opened the performance like a barbershop quartet: Wilson sang a typically potent lead vocal while Boyz II Men harmonized prettily to “Earfquake” in the background. But the smooth, soft opening was a feint — moments later, Tyler, the Creator was shrieking into the microphone, moving jerkily to “New Magic Wand.” Soon an army of identically dressed dancers joined...

There’s really only one story this week. “Music’s biggest night,” as they term the Grammy Awards, is under a cloud this year, as CEO/President Deborah Dugan was placed on administrative leave earlier this week by the Recording Academy as an investigation is underway into complaints about her tenure.
Considering Dugan has only been on duty since August, the action was shocking. The first female head of the Recording Academy, her enemies are already dirtying her up in the press, dropping hints of cruelty to an underling, inability to work with the Board of Directors.
Her attorney has already indicated Dugan will fight back when she gets the opportunity, so expect either a quiet settlement or a truly ugly battle that will rend and tear the institution.

Bruno Mars has linked up with Charlie Wilson for the R&b legend’s romantic new hip shaker, “Forever Valentine.”
Wilson delivers a vintage vocal performance on the cut, belting and crooning sweet and delightfully over-the-top paeans to his partner — “It ain’t gotta be February/to break out some whipped cream and strawberries” — over a thumping funk groove. Mars provides back-up vocals on the track, his voice simmering under Wilson’s as the latter sings, “Will you be mine/My forever valentine/Say you will and make me/The happiest man alive.

Camila Cabello, H.E.R., the Jonas Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Rosalia, Run-dmc, Tyler, the Creator and Charlie Wilson have joined the list of performers at the Grammy Awards, which take place in Los Angeles on Jan. 26. They join the roster of already announced performers: Aerosmith, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, and a duet from Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.
Raitt will pay tribute to Lifetime Achievement honoree John Prine, while Run-dmc will join Aerosmith, presumably for their 1986 tag-team hit “Walk This Way.”
In keeping with their new tactic of allowing certain artists to break the news of their Grammy performance on social media, Cabello and Tyler both announced their spots late Tuesday night.
The practice started last week when Billie Eilish tweeted in the wee hours of Wednesday that she would be performing on the show — making her the first performer to be announced for the 2020 Grammys — and...

Imagine, if you can, a “Transformers” movie in which the plot is coherent, the robots feel like characters (as opposed to gleaming CG creations), and the action is staged and edited clearly enough to follow. After five rock ’em, sock ’em blockbuster features, it has become clear that audiences would never get such a film as long as Michael Bay occupied the director’s chair, and though he should certainly be credited for proving that a Hasbro toy line could support a massive global franchise, “Bumblebee” is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along.

The 49th NAACP Image Awards Feb. 15 celebrated actors from “Get Out,” “Power,” and host Anthony Anderson’s own “Black-ish” while also honoring the activism of performers Danny Glover and Charlie Wilson. Held on this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, winners of the awards presented annually by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People invoked the civil rights leader’s legacy throughout the celebration. When Ava DuVernay, who told King’s story in 2014’s “Selma,” won Entertainer of the Year, she championed her fellow artists and declared, “This is our time. We can say we were here when all this gorgeous art was happening and that we supported it, that we lifted each other up, that we did as Dr. King said he would do: Live the dream. We are the dream.” A number of the 2018 recipients—including honorees in literature and music—were announced prior to Monday’s event,...
