Paper Girls #1-3

Only three issues in, Brian K. Vaughn and Cliff Chiang’s Paper Girls has already piqued intense fandom. Grounded in the recognizably familiar–1988 Midwestern suburbia–with its head in the clouds–aliens on dinosaurs, time travelers, mutant teenagers, Paper Girls engages both the heart and the mind. The four pre-teens on their paper route–Erin, Mack, Tiffany, and K.J.–are tough, mature, and can persevere through the toughest situations. They have to be, they’re paper girls. But they’re also only 12, so their innocence and relative naivety give them space to grow as characters. Littered with artifacts from the era, the comic is, in part, an authentic period piece, colored in the equivalent of retro sepia-tones for the late 80’s.

What do you do when you're a distributor and you have a surprise box office hit film during its opening weekend? You assume there's an even broader appetite for it, and so you expand its reach. That's what Sony has done with its faith-based drama "War Room," the fifth film from Alex and Stephen Kendrick. The film's opening weekend earned $11.35 million, and which Sony says continued into the week, with impressive Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday numbers: "Our weekday numbers have surpassed previous Kendrick Brothers films and suggest the momentum will continue into the second frame," said Ben Howard, Senior VP of Provident Films. The film's social media...

Polka may not be the sexiest music ever invented, but Channing Tatum can still make it hot.
The Tonight Show took footage from Magic Mike Xxl and set it to polka music on Thursday night, and the results were pretty amusing.
It's certainly worth a laugh to see how Myrtle Beach stripping looks when set to Central European music.
The irony, though, is that Tatum, 35, actually hates polka music. In fact, it's the one genre of music he can't stomach.
"Kendrick Lamar is dope. I like kinda everything," the actor told Reddit in a June "Ask Me Anything" session. "I...

Every day, small-screen addicts have the chance to check out dozens upon dozens of offerings: network police procedurals, basic-cable sketch shows, late-night hosts gaming with their guests, streaming sitcoms, Britcoms and rebooted series, premium-channel prestige dramas, off-brand reality TV and those unclassifiable oddities that reside left of the virtual dial. But here at Rolling Stone's new column, we're zeroing in on and counting down the five best moments of the viewing week — from the scenes everyone's been talking/recapping/tweeting about to the underseen, undersung performances and undeservedly neglected episodes you might have missed.

The Directors Guild has nominated Richard Linklater, Alejandro G. Inarritu, Morten Tyldum, Wes Anderson and Clint Eastwood as the best feature-film directors of 2014, the DGA announced on Tuesday.
Linklater was nominated for “Boyhood,” Inarritu for “Birdman,” Tyldum for “The Imitation Game,” Anderson for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and Eastwood for “American Sniper.”
The Eastwood nomination was the most surprising of the group, with the veteran director and four-time DGA nominee beating out David Fincher for “Gone Girl,” James Marsh for “The Theory of Everything,” Christopher Nolan for “Interstellar” and, most notably, Ava DuVernay for “Selma,” a late-breaking film that has...

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is notable in the season for a number of reasons. First, it's a massive voting body unlike most on the circuit, so their nominations choices can often hint toward consensus. Second, their winner very often goes on to win the Academy Award for Best Director, which as we all know tends to presage the Best Picture Oscar. But... ...one wonders how those two elements are being viewed as of late. After all, the last two years have seen a split, once by necessity ("Argo" director Ben Affleck was not nominated), the second time in a close race. Could it be that the Academy will start looking at these categories differently rather than as a package deal? Maybe, maybe not. I have no real answers there. I'm just asking the question. Anyway, the DGA nominated mostly expected names today. Clint Eastwood, naturally. "American Sniper" is cruising.

The Directors Guild of America announced its nominees Tuesday for its annual Feature Film award, and the list contains a few surprises.
Wes Anderson continues to gain momentum for an eventual Oscar nomination for "The Grand Budapest Hotel," snagging a DGA nom for the first time in his career. And Clint Eastwood, who was snubbed by the Golden Globes, made a triumphant return to the DGAs, earning a nod for "American Sniper," his fourth overall nomination from the organization.
One notable exclusion from the list is "Selma" director Ava DuVernay, whose film was also snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild. David Fincher, once considered an Oscar lock for "Gone Girl," was also absent.
The rest of the DGA Feature Film nominees were Richard Linklater ("Boyhood"), Alejandro González Iñárritu ("Birdman"), and Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game"). The full list from the DGA, including each nominee's directorial team, is below. Nominations for...

The Voice UK act Stevie McCrorie has joked that he felt like a "scared wee boy" when Rita Ora began flirting with him during his blind audition.
The firefighter - who won over the coaches with his rendition of Kodaline's 'All I Want' - was surprised when Ora started calling him "hot" and even gave him a massage.

Yes, "If I Stay" is yet another teen romance based on a young adult book. I will disclose that I read and loved Gayle Forman's best-selling book about a brilliant young cellist faced with the ultimate life-and-death decision after her entire family is involved in a devastating car accident. Mia Hall (Chloe Moretz in her first romantic lead role) is an invisible spirit watching over her unconscious body in an intensive care unit. As she ponders what the future holds for her (is she headed for Juilliard, as she once hoped, or should she just give in to the lure of letting go), Mia spends most of her time remembering what she loved most about her pre-crash life: her family, her best friend, and her rather amazing boyfriend Adam (Jamie Blackley).

These are just three adjectives which can be used to describe Metallica’s latest cinematic experience Metallica: Through the Never.
For those of you who are fans of the American heavy metal band, this will blow your socks off. Not only are you treated to what is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and elaborate live performances you will ever see, but there is also a surreal and fantastical sub-plot which accompanies their greatest hits.
For those of you aren’t, well this might just be the thing which tips you over the edge. I’m not talking about those of you who hate Metallica and metal music in general, and even so there are some interesting questions which need answering if you are paying for a ticket to a show you know you are going to hate. I’m talking about those people maybe know only a couple of songs,...

David Cameron gave a mixtape to his fellow G8 leaders at their summit in June, and High Fidelity it is not.
The themes of the meeting in Northern Ireland were tax evasion and transparency, but the 10-song playlist had no clear unifying theme. In fact, the Telegraph reports that the songs were not selected by Cameron at all.
According to The Independent, the playlist was put together by BPI, the British record company trade association, as "a bespoke creation for the leaders."
The 10 songs constitute a smattering of the chart-topping adult contemporary fare Barack Obama or Vladimir Putin might have caught if they tuned into BBC Radio 2 while cruising around the Lough Erne Resort.
The Guardian called the mixtape an offering of "well-scrubbed young men and woman peddling polished but largely derivative takes on folk and soul, with a sideline in tastefully bleeping electronica."

Maybe you couldn't get a ticket. Maybe you hate camping. Maybe you're too old to do the mud, drugs and dancing in the Shangri-La until 4am. Whatever the reason you're not at Glastonbury this weekend, it doesn't meant that you can't do Glastonbury.
Thanks to the BBC's monstrous coverage, you can watch more on the TV than you could if you were there in your wellies. Turn up the volume, buy some dodgy cider, bring in some mud from the garden and cook yourself a dodgy cheeseburger for dinner and you'll have near enough the Pyramid Stage experience in your living room. Sort of.
Friday
After weeks of build-up, the BBC's TV coverage starts properly tonight with viewers having the choice of BBC Two, Three or Four, depending on your tastes.
The big hitters and highlights from Day One will be on BBC Two at 10pm-10.30pm and 11pm-2am...

The British are at war! After the singer-songwriter threw shade on the 1D boys after the 2013 Brit Awards, members of the boy band sent out some fiery reactions of their own on Twitter. That’s right — we’ve got an all-out feud on our hands!
Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson of One Direction are not going to be pushed around by British singer Jake Bugg.
One Direction Dissed By Jake Bugg
Jake, 18, totally went off on the worldwide phenomenon of 1D in a new interview, saying, “I mean, [One Direction] must know that they’re terrible.”
He continued, “They must know… calling them the new rock stars is a ridiculous statement. And people should stop making it.”
Jake, for those who don’t know — and we assume that includes pretty much everyone not living in the UK — has become pretty popular in his homeland and was nominated for Best British Breakthrough Act at the 2013 Brit Awards.

The 2013 Brit Awards, hosted yesterday (February 20) at London's O2 Arena, proved once again that England makes (and appreciates) better music than we do, with top awards going to Adele, Frank Ocean, newcomer Emeli Sandé, Mumford & Sons and The Black Keys along with performances by Justin Timberlake (see below), Taylor Swift, Ms. Sandé, Mumford, Muse, One Direction, Robbie Williams and Mr. Howard. (Let's just politely ignore the fact that Lana Del Rey won anything over Cat Power, agreed?)
