Stars: Louisa Krause, Sophie Lowe | Written and Directed by Maximilian Erlenwein
Written and directed by Maximilian Erlenwein, The Dive is an English language remake of the 2020 Swedish thriller Breaking Surface, which is basically the same story, only colder, due to it being set in northern Norway. As such, it’s an effective and engaging survival horror, not too far removed from 2022’s horror hit The Fall, which had two women stuck up a pole, as opposed to two women stuck underwater. You could also, somewhat less generously, see it as 47 Metres Down without the sharks.
Louisa Krause and Sophie Lowe play May and Drew, two sisters of a similar age, who have become semi-estranged as a result of a recent event – we assume the death of their father, though that’s never explicitly stated. Whatever the incident, May is still harbouring some resentment towards Drew (flashbacks belatedly hint at the...

There’s no time like the present in this diving thriller, neither for its two sister protagonists May (Louisa Krause) and Drew (Sophie Lowe), nor the director Maximilian Erlenwein who wastes no time in getting the two of them in the water. The pair have an evident competence and confidence as they prepare to take the dive in from a tiny jetty on an isolated and idyllic looking beach, although May seems less keen on this yearly reunion swim than Drew is.
The pair are wearing full face masks that allow them to communicate even when submerged, also permitting Erlenwein to key us more directly into their thoughts, and soon, fears. They’re not under for long before disaster strikes as a sudden rockfall catches them off guard. Worse still, it is the practical, no-nonsense May who gets trapped. With the clock ticking on her sister’s air it’s up to the more.

One briny-deep thriller that does not have sharks, other aquatic predators or even human ones, German director Max Erlenwein’s English-language “The Dive” manages to work up considerable tension nonetheless. It’s closer in gist to “127 Hours” than most other underwater suspense films, hinging on a similar type of physical entrapment — only the survivable timespan here is of course much reduced, because the imperiled characters have a limited oxygen supply.
While perhaps not quite striking enough in style or incident to leave a lasting impression, this very well-crafted remake of co-writer Joachim Heden’s 2020 Norwegian feature “Breaking Surface” should particularly impress with its underwater photography on the big screen. Most viewers, however, are likely to catch it via home formats, as Rlje Films releases the film day-and-date to digital and theater screens on Aug. 25.

Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause as Drew and May in The Dive. Maximilian Erlenwein: 'It was crucial for me to make it as real and realistic as possible' Maximilian Erlenwein's The Dive takes the plunge with two sisters, Drew (Sophie Lowe) and May (Louisa Krause), as they head off on their annual diving trip together. The isolated location proves to be a threat, however, when May becomes trapped beneath the waves and Drew faces a race against the clock to try to save her. Shot on location in Malta and the neighbouring island of Gozo, Erlenwein was determined to keep the underwater shooting as authentic as possible, which meant both actresses had to learn how to dive. We caught up with him ahead of the film's FrightFest screening and UK release to talk about the challenges.
Do you dive yourself?
Maximilian Erlenwein: Oh, yes. I did a lot of diving when I was younger.

An race against the clock offers plenty of adrenaline-filled moments, but a weak backstory drains the tension
This survival thriller puts an underwater twist on 127 Hours, the Danny Boyle movie in which James Franco’s arm gets wedged in a boulder while he’s out hiking. Here, the limb-stuck-in-rock predicament is 30-odd meters below sea level, with an American diver who traps her leg off the coast of Malta. (Plot spoiler: no DIY surgery is involved.) What follows is a race against the clock, cleverly constructed by director Maximilian Erlenwein and co-writer Joachim Hedén. Their script throws in plenty of calamities to nobble the diver’s escape, but didn’t quite manage – for me at least – to spark a vertiginous clammy terror.
Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause play sisters Drew and May, driving out to dive in a hire car. Clearly, there’s unspoken conflict between the two. May...

"You have to go to the surface and call for help!" Rlje Films has revealed the trailer for an underwater survival thriller titled The Dive, from German filmmaker Maximilian Erlenwein. This is actually a remake of a Scandinavian film called Breaking Surface, which has the same plot except in Norway. In this new one, two sisters go diving at a beautiful, remote location. One is struck by a rock underwater from a landslide, leaving her trapped 28 meters below. With dangerously low levels of oxygen and cold temperatures at these depths, it is up to her sister to save her – Drew must make life-and-death decisions with no outside help in sight... The thriller stars Sophie Lowe as Drew and Louisa Krause as May – the one trapped. This looks super scary! Especially for anyone afraid of deep water. This trailer plays like 127 Hours, but underwater. If you're already nervous of Scuba diving,...

Stateside, German actor Til Schweiger has become a “that guy” of action thrillers, a supporting player who turns up —in Atomic Blond, King Arthur or Inglourious Basterds — for a memorable line (“Say auf Wiedersehen to your Nazi balls!”) or some high-energy action scene.

The costliest Czech film of all time features epic battles, royal conspiracies, hungry lions –and Michael Caine in a neckruff
If you had to put money on who would be cast for a film about 15th-century Czech warrior hero Jan Žižka, then Ben Foster, Matthew Goode, Til Schweiger and Sir Michael of Caine would probably not be top of the list. But that is the impressive ensemble kitted out in ermines and armour by director Petr Jákl for this brutal, byzantine but strangely uninvolving historical actioner set in medieval Bohemia – apparently the most expensive Czech production ever.
Foster plays Žižka, a seasoned mercenary who with his merry band of bruisers is first seen protecting Lord Boresh (Caine) from a riverside ambush. Boresh is neckruff-deep in court intrigues that make the Tory party look like pussycats: Wenceslas IV (Karel Roden) is due in Rome to be crowned Holy Emperor, but his...

Plot: The story of fifteenth-century Czech icon and warlord Jan Zizka, who defeated armies of the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire.
Review: In today’s day and age of high fantasy, it’s rare that a film set in grounded medieval times can still bring the same level of excitement. The pacing is often very slow, and the action scenes are few and far between. Thankfully, Medieval decides it will go completely against that and provide a heavy-hitting action film. But is that enough to make up for its faults?
There are a lot of things that I really enjoyed about Medieval. Ben Foster is always great to see as he’s one of the better actors out there and so often overlooked. His character of Jan Zizka isn’t someone I was aware of before, but now am intrigued to seek out. The story is simple enough,...

There are a lot of things that I really enjoyed about Medieval. Ben Foster is always great to see as he’s one of the better actors out there and so often overlooked. His character of Jan Zizka isn’t someone I was aware of before, but now am intrigued to seek out. The story is simple enough,...

One can’t watch a film like “Medieval” without imagining yourself in a fantastic position. No, you wouldn’t want to be a character in the movie, that’s for sure; they live lives of constant violence, exploitation and conspiracy. But to be one of the Foley artists working on a film with this many brutal battles — clanking on armor, scraping on chain mail, rustling through fresh leaves — that sounds like a delightful time.
“Medieval” struggles as a work of historical fiction, but when the action mounts, it’s immersive and exciting. Ben Foster stars as real-life soldier and strategist Jan Žižka, a Czech national hero who is said to have never lost a battle. The film takes place in Žižka’s relatively early days, when he was working as a mercenary for Lord Boreš (Michael Caine), who is trying to secure the throne of the Holy Roman Emperor for King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia,...

The box office was up 5.9 last weekend, bolstered by the lure of 3 tickets on National Cinema Day on Saturday, making it one of just two weekends over the past eight weeks where the box office didn’t decline (though it was still the fifth worst weekend of the year). Unfortunately, the numbers will once again fall this weekend, likely below the year’s second worst weekend in the overall box office but probably staying above the year’s worst weekend. We can expect larger drops than usual given the juiced grosses from National Cinema Day, but we still may see decent holds and openings this weekend. Still, there’s no denying the grim state of the box office. This may even be the third weekend in a row where no film hits 10 million, a modest milestone that only three weekends in the entire 2010s failed to reach but which nonetheless...

This past Labor Day weekend looked like it could be one of the worst in recent memory. Thankfully, it was salvaged by National Cinema Day and the overwhelming success of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This coming weekend, those recovering from the throes of awards love out of Venice and Telluride might be prepping for TIFF in Toronto, but everyone else will have a few new options in theaters, just nothing being released particularly wide.
First up, there’s Zach Cregger’s horror film “Barbarian” starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long. It’s a pretty crazy film that starts out as a simple high-concept surrounding two strangers stuck sharing the same Airbnb, which then turns into something quite different.

Czech folk hero Jan Zizka’s story has been dramatized — and mythologized — in various forms many times, including a mid-1950s celluloid trilogy by Otakar Vavra that was arguably the local industry’s most ambitious production in those somewhat stodgy, pre-New Wave days. Purportedly the Czech Republic’s most expensive feature to date, Petr Jakl’s new “Medieval” portrays the same legendary figure in what’s anything but an old-school costume epic. Instead, this robust, assured enterprise offers a distant past in the brutally combat-driven action mode of “Gladiator” and “Braveheart,” its patriotic sentiments steeped in mud and blood.
The economic realities for such a costly spectacular require a degree of formulaic creative decisions in line with current international audience tastes, while the casting of American and British actors in primary roles further waters down a distinctive regional character. Nevertheless, “Medieval” succeeds as a lively, handsome chunk of history (however...

Exclusive: In an interesting international tie-up, UK sales firm Protagonist Pictures and Germany’s 7500 and Stowaway producer Augenschein are teaming up to co-represent worldwide rights on select English-language movies.
Protagonist will serve as executive producers on the films in the new partnership and work with Augenschein to source finance for the projects. The companies will invest a portion of the funds generated by the sales into the co-development of select projects, with the aim of building a co-production slate.
The strategic alliance is not fully exclusive and will not prevent either company from continuing to work with others.
This is a smart move to bolster prominence in a market in which the streamers are increasingly dominant. We’ve heard for a while about the potential for sellers and distributors teaming up to increase their pulling power and distribution footprints.

To base a film on making philosophical ideas is a tricky thing. First it has to be aimed at a big enough audience who may not understand the concept, but then it could alienate the ones who truly understand it. The Philosophers is a movie that raises a few interesting questions, but proves in the end where true flaws are found.
When a philosophy teacher challenges his class of graduating seniors with choosing ten people who would survive in an underground shelter to repopulate the earth once an apocalypse hit it raises many questions. One of the most important one being just what influence the teacher himself is having.

A philosophy class playing out moral quandaries makes for a fun sci-fi fable in theory, but poor acting and flawed logic let it down in practice
John Huddles’s sci-fi thriller unintentionally succeeds in replicating the exact experience of playing “would you rather?” with a friend in a pub, as in it starts out with vague philosophical questions but ends up being utterly ridiculous. And just like the silly game, for the right viewers The Philosophers could be quite a fun watch, despite the sub-par film-making.
The film opens with a sweet love scene between Petra (Sophie Lowe) and James (Rhys Wakefield), shot with an awful Vaseline-like sheen that plagues the entire film’s cinematography. Petra and James meet on a philosophy course, which, for some reason, takes place in Indonesia – and yet most of the students are white. Once upon an ABC schedule, Adam Horowitz and Edward Ktisis wrote a little show about fairy tales. Once Upon A Time spanned seven seasons, and at least three of them were really good!
While that last good season, Once Upon A Time Season 3 was airing, Horowitz and Kitsis made another show set in the Onceverse: Once Upon A Time in Wonderland.
Once Upon A Time in Wonderland only lasted one season, but for thirteen glorious episodes, it was one of the best things on TV. Being so short, it never made it to DVD, and it hasn't been on a streaming service in eons. Now, finally, it's coming to Disney+ this month!
As a die-hard fan of Wonderland, imagine my surprise when this news was met with equal surprise. Why you ask? Because a lot of fans of Once Upon A Time never even knew there was a spinoff.

Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) is now back on our screens in the thriller Above Suspicion, directed by Phillip Noyce with the screenplay by Chris Gerolmo. The film is based on the book by Joe Sharkey – the true story of America’s first ever conviction for murder of an FBI agent back in 1988.
Clarke plays Susan Smith, a drug addict and young mother of two who also acts as the film’s narrator, but telling the story from beyond the grave. She is the victim of FBI agent Mark Putnam (played by Jack Huston). This case became a memorable moment in American history and one that should never be forgotten.

The 1989 murder of Susan Smith is a despairingly grim Southern Gothic story, shot through with reckless sex, institutional corruption and Kentucky-fried local scandal: prime material for the kind of forensic, heavily extended true-crime podcasts (or Netflix-style documentary series) that garner such widespread public fascination these days. At least “Above Suspicion,” a steamed-up, sweat-soaked film adaptation of the material, mercifully rakes over its unsavory details in two hours rather than several. It’s quick, dirty and perhaps more tawdry than it needs to be: There may not be much dignity to be scrounged from the tale of a naive, drug-addicted FBI informant who sleeps with — and is subsequently killed by — her supervising agent, but Chris Gerolmo’s script isn’t at great pains to find the human factor here, and Phillip Noyce’s direction coats the whole unhappy affair in cold blue steel.
What it does have is Emilia Clarke.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 28 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 28; last year only 21 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Nothing is more dangerous than someone with nothing to lose. Based on the chilling true story of a newly married FBI poster boy assigned to an Appalachian mountain town in Kentucky. There, he is drawn into an illicit affair with an impoverished local woman who becomes his star informant. She sees in him her means of escape; instead, it is a ticket to disaster for both of them.
