“Artists for a ceasefire. Peace in the world,” Lennox said with her fist in the air, as an image of O’Connor displayed in the background.
Fans celebrated the Eurythmics icon for making the bold statement and honoring O’Connor in the “most meaningful and honest way.

What kind of music should the world expect from a 36-year-old Drake? “I want to hear adult Drake rapping for adult people,” rapper-turned-podcaster Joe Budden said after hearing his new album, For All the Dogs. In lieu of any newfound maturity, the album is instead full of very Drake moments, including lyrics about a ruined Bahamas trip, the difficulties of dating 25-year-olds, Esperanza Spalding’s 2011 Grammy wins, and people thinking he’s still hung up on Rihanna. Meanwhile, critics noticed what they described as a growing misogyny in Drake’s work,...

Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, and Dua Lipa all have one thing in common: they’re winners of the Grammy for Best New Artist. In most of those cases their wins were fairly predictable, feeling like the culmination of a massive year rather than the start of a new era for the artists. This is true for many — dare I say, most — Best New Artist winners of the past decade or so. Chance the Rapper, Sam Smith, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis all coasted easily to their wins, and even the less obvious picks like Bon Iver and Alessia Cara were still predicted by many Grammy watchers. Perhaps the last truly shocking Best New Artist was Esperanza Spalding, who took the award in 2011. And now, 12 years later, we might be in for a similar event.

This year’s Grammy nominations for Best New Artist were … unexpected, to say the least. If you look back at the odds for the Grammy nominations on Gold Derby, only five of the expected 10 contenders actually made it in, those being Latto, Muni Long, Anitta, Wet Leg, and Omar Apollo. There were definitely a lot of surprises when it came to more niche genre-specific artists, and perhaps two of the biggest surprises were jazz artists Samara Joy and Domi and Jd Beck. But don’t count out the jazzists for the win here.
Samara Joy and Domi and Jd Beck represent different branches of jazz. Joy is more of a traditional jazz vocalist. Her sophomore record, “Linger Awhile,” which is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album, features a collection of timeless standards sung by Joy with her phenomenal voice. Joy is perhaps most similar to previous Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding,...

The 2023 Grammy nominations were announced on Tuesday, November 15 and, as usual, they were a mixed bag of shocking snubs and worthy surprises. While analyzing the hundreds of bids, we noticed several tidbits of telling information that should help us when making our predictions next year. Below, see our Top 5 Grammy nominations takeaways.
1. Watch out for jazz and Americana
Last year, Jon Batiste surprised everyone with an Album of the Year nom. Among the artists many genres, two stood out: jazz and American Roots. Batiste ended up winning in those two genres, along with Album of the Year and two other categories.
This year, the nominations prove this two seemingly small genres are here to stay. In Best New Artist, two jazz artists got nominated (Samara Joy and DOMi & Jd Beck), as well as Americana star Molly Tuttle. For Song of the Year, General Field winner and Americana star Bonnie Raitt...

While some people accuse the Grammys of being a popularity contest, this is not really accurate. The award show often features many acts that are not widely known by the general public, some of which even go on to win big. This year, among the Harry Styleses and Beyonces of music, let’s consider which under-the-radar artist could get their moment to finally shine in the mainstream.

The Grammy for Best New Artist can be a double-edged sword. The award has been associated with a certain “curse” where winners in the category tend to fade away from the public consciousness rather quickly, especially in comparison to their fellow nominees. With a recent coronation of yet another Best New Artist, Olivia Rodrigo, I think it’s time to truly reevaluate whether the award is really a kiss of death. Let’s specifically take a look at the 2010s and onward.
A couple of winners fall into the “genre favorite” category, where the winning artist didn’t become a huge crossover star but still enjoys success in their particular field. For example, the 2010s opened with a win for country group Zac Brown Band. A lot of people mark their win with an asterisk, since that year’s breakout superstar, Lady Gaga, was deemed ineligible due to a Grammy...

This year’s nominees for the Best New Artist Grammy form one of the most diverse lineups the category’s ever had. It’s been nearly nine years since the Robert Glasper Experiment released Black Radio II, the second, Grammy-winning installment of his mélange of contemporary jazz, beat-heavy hip-hop, and neo-soul melodies. Since then, Glasper disbanded the Experiment, embarked on soundtrack work such as the 2020 film The Photograph and the Bel-Air TV series with Terrace Martin, and engaged himself in damaging social media controversies. There has been a resurgence in popular support for jazz, too, and that’s partly thanks to Glasper (he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 masterwork To Pimp a...

The Grammy Award for Best New Artist can be an honor or a curse. Past winners like Adele, John Legend, Maroon 5, and Dua Lipa have become stars of their times, while some others seemed to fade away as soon as their names were called on Grammy night. But sometimes it’s better to get to know the nominees instead of simply judging the winners, as some of them like Kendrick Lamar, Sza, and Kacey Musgraves have turned out to be important artists in their respective genres despite losing this award. Let’s take a look at the 10 nominees in the Bna class of 2022. Who among them do you think we’ll still be talking about in 10 years?

If you follow the Grammys at all, you are probably well aware that the show can be full of surprises. Take for example Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” pulling an upset against Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” for Best Pop Album this past year — despite “Folklore” going on to win Album of the Year. Or a few years back when we got that very unexpected win from Esperanza Spalding against Justin Bieber and Drake for Best New Artist. This year, with a brand new set of nominations, and a lot more competition than ever, it’s to be expected that a couple of unexpected picks will prevail. Here are three artists you might be underestimating, and why you perhaps shouldn’t.

Going through the list of previous Album of the Year Grammy winners, you’ll see some familiar faces. Taylor Swift and Adele pop up a couple times, you’ll see critically beloved records like Kacey Musgraves’s “Golden Hour” and Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” some veterans like Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, as well as some big blockbusters like Santana’s “Supernatural.” But among those somewhat predictable picks over the last couple of decades, one sticks out immediately: Herbie Hancock for “River: The Joni Letters.” Now, if you’re on the younger side you might have no idea who Hancock even is, but if you were watching the 2008 Grammys then you were probably shocked by Hancock’s seemingly out-of-nowhere victory. Let’s take a look back.

With the Grammy eligibility period about to end on August 31, we’ve opened predictions in the fourth general field category, Best New Artist, which has been known for crowning burgeoning music superstars, some lower-profile industry darlings, and occasional flashes in the pan. This year’s race, however, seems like it might be over before it’s even begun since no other breakthrough acts have had the immediate commercial and critical success that Olivia Rodrigo has achieved in just a few months. Does anyone stand a chance against her? We’ve seen the recording academy do unexpected things before.

Pop culture moves so fast these days that I could swear Lorde, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo represent three entirely different generations of singer-songwriters. But they’re actually close enough in age to be sisters — they’re basically one Haim. But all three artists rose to fame as musically precocious teenagers, and they’re all eligible for nominations at the upcoming 2022 Grammys. In fact, this year’s awards could be dominated by artists who showed talent beyond their years. Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Shawn Mendes could also be recognized, and they were also eligible for Grammys before they were eligible to vote.
Swift released her self-titled debut album in 2006 when she was just 16-years-old. Bieber’s debut EP “My World” dropped in 2009 when he was 15. Lorde broke through with her first studio album “Pure Heroine” in 2013 at 16 and won Song of the Year at the Grammys a few months...

The Grammy for Best New Artist has been the subject of criticism many times. Some years the winner seems too shallow, based on popularity more than artistic merit, like when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis beat the likes of Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and future general field winners Ed Sheeran and Kacey Musgraves. Other years it seems like the Grammys are oblivious to success and just go for the most “Grammy-friendly” act in the lineup, which usually means avoiding hip-hop and Edm like when Bon Iver beat J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, and Skrillex. Perhaps the biggest Best New Artist upset was shocking by many standards. Let’s talk about Esperanza Spalding.
Spalding won the coveted Best New Artist prize at the 53rd Grammy Awards exactly 10 years ago. She was no stranger to praise; she got a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music and received praise from Barack Obama...

Will Grammys reject hip-hop for Best New Artist again? Phoebe Bridgers may upset Megan Thee Stallion
The Grammys have a pretty shoddy track record when it comes to awarding hip-hop artists outside of their designated genre categories. But this year it looks like Megan Thee Stallion will be a rare rapper to win Best New Artist. Could Grammy bias strike again, though? According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, the artist she most has to worry about is Phoebe Bridgers.

Songs for You, Vols 1 & 2 will be released this summer for Record Store Day 2021. Nineteen artists will be featured on both compilations, including Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Summer Walker, Esperanza Spalding, Common, Freddie Gibbs, and more. The Grammy Award for Best New Artist is a push from the industry for their favorite up-and-coming musicians making waves. While some past winners have admittedly faded away, a lot went on to become decade-defining or even generation-defining artists, like The Beatles (1965), Mariah Carey (1991) and Adele (2009). Let’s see who’s in line this year to join this list of influential winners.
Seea tale of two Taylors: Two generations of singer-songwriters could win Grammys for Best Pop Album
One of the front-runners here is definitely rapper and internet sensation Megan Thee Stallion. Megan notched two number-one hits in 2020, including the three-time Grammy-nominated song “Savage” with Beyoncé. Not only that, but her debut studio album “Good News” debuted at number-two on the Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming her third top-10 effort after her mixtape “Fever” (2019) and EP “Suga” (2020). Megan has also received acclaim for her confident lyrics and music, with “Wap” and...

Every year we get a couple of surprise wins at the Grammys. In 2015 many was shocked when Beyoncé’s self-titled album lost Album of the Year to Beck’s “Morning Phase,” while many were just as shocked a few years earlier in 2011 when indie rockers Arcade Fire‘s “The Suburbs” pulled a surprise win against commercial heavyweights like Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and Eminem’s “Recovery.” With the 2021 Grammy Awards already being a little controversial with unexpected noms and snubs across the board, who do we think could surprise us come January 31?

The race is on for the Grammys’ best new artist with Lizzo and Billie Eilish positioned as frontrunners in an exceptionally exciting 2020 category. Survey the odds for all eight of the year’s contenders below.
Black Pumas
Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada have been a duo only since 2017, but they sound as if they’ve been making music together for decades. Their debut album, “Black Moon Rising,” is the sort of accomplished bluesy, soulful gem that lesser acts spend years working up to and still rarely deliver. That might have a lot to do with the influence of Quesada, who has a bit of Grammy history as a member of Grupo Fantasma, a band that won a Grammy for its 2010 album “El Existential.” Duos don’t tend to do particularly well in the new artist category, with the Carpenters, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and, yes, Milli Vanilli being the only twosomes...

Dua Lipa was our Grammy front-runner for Best New Artist before the nominations were announced, but then R&B breakout H.E.R. came out of nowhere with an Album of the Year bid for her self-titled compilation, so now she has moved out front in our New Artist forecasts. Can Dua Lipa overcome that deficit? She’s still the biggest hit-maker in the category, and voters often favor commercial success.
Dua Lipa only has two nominations this year, compared to five for H.E.R. In addition to Best New Artist, Lipa is up for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity” with Silk City, Diplo and Mark Ronson. That doesn’t seem like a lot of broad support from the recording academy, but it’s possible she would have done even better if her biggest hit had been eligible for consideration.

Tuesday’s Season 15 finale of The Voice promised to be a real nail-biter. Kirk Jay, heretofore the frontrunner, had had an off night Monday, and Kennedy Holmes had turned in not one, not two but three dazzling performances. They were so good, in fact, that my praise got me accused of being biased. (I think all my enthusiasm for her means is that I prefer contestants who sing like a dream and don’t stand on stage like they’ve been hit by a freeze ray.) But, considering that just last week, the 14-year-old had had to fight for the Instant Save,...

John Legend performed a medley of “What Christmas Means to Me” and “Bring Me Love,” two tracks from his new holiday LP, on Wednesday’s Tonight Show.
The soul singer was on a retro stage setup that recalled a Sixties variety show, with his massive backing band – three backing vocalists, a horn section, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, percussionist and drummer – set up on individual platforms. Legend, decked out in a green suit, swayed around and smiled as the group added some Motown-styled choreography – including finger snaps and bobbing brass movements.

Washington, D.C. — It was a celebration of a broad spectrum of American music — from country and jazz to musical theater and modern minimalism — at the 41 annual Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.
That’s when the nation’s capital paused from its political concerns to toast eight showbiz titans for excellence: Superstar multi-hyphenates Cher and Reba McEntire, along with composer/pianist Philip Glass, and jazz saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter. Tapped for a special honor was the creative quartet behind the musical “Hamilton” – writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and music director Alex Lacamoire.
President Donald Trump declined to attend the event for the second straight year or host the traditional pre-gala reception for honorees at the White House. The decision, while breaking with longstanding tradition, was announced earlier and was met without visible dissent since Trump’s presence would have overshadowed the event, if not impacted it directly.
