A Dog’s Purpose is 2017’s Collateral Beauty (I know it’s early, but I’ve got no better comparison). Holy shit. Killing multiple canine companions under the guise of reincarnation does not make for an uplifting watch, especially when most rebirth “chapters” stand alone. “But it’s fine! Josh Gad’s voice will fill another fleshy dog sack, and we’ll be looking at more cuddly adorableness against shortly!” Oh, I know! That’s established by a nice puppy euthanasia scene within the first minute-or-so. No! You don’t get to play that card. Everyone involved understood the stakes, and knew that audiences would be reduced to weepy blobs every time another pup bit the dust. This is manipulation at its finest, without the incentive to keep sobbing through the pain.
So, yeah – Josh Gad plays the soul of a dog who cannot die. He talks a lot about his purpose,...

Matthew McConaughey recently completed filming for “The Dark Tower” and has now found his followup project. Per Deadline, the Oscar winner is in negotiations to star in “White Boy Rick,” directed by “71” director Yann Demange.
The drama is based on the true story of Richard Wershe Jr., who at the age of 14 became an undercover informant for local federal law enforcement agencies in 1980s Detroit. The boy eventually became a major drug dealer and when Wershe was 17, he was sentenced to life in prison after being caught with 17 pounds of cocaine.
McConaughey will portray Wershe’s father, a firearms dealer and blue-collar factory worker who allegedly also became a police informant himself. The producers are currently in the process of casting the young boy.

It’s no Shaun of the Dead – despite copying a few tricks from it – but this silly zombie action romp has some good laughs
As well as many other cheerfully offensive points, this zombie teen action-comedy has some speculation about what happens when animals, as well as humans, get bitten by the horrible bug. It doesn’t have the poignancy or satire shown in Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead – although the fight scene accompanied by Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 is Wrightesque – but there are laughs. Ben (played by Tye Sheridan – from Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life) is a member of a local scout troop, along with sex-obsessed Carter (Logan Miller) and nerdy Augie (Joey Morgan). Ben senses that the scout uniform is not exactly a babe magnet, but when the zombie apocalypse hits, it’s these boys’ can-do scouting spirit that is going to save their local community.

Kian Lawley, who first gained fame for his YouTube videos, is building up his feature film resume, one credit at a time. The 20-year-old social media celebrity is one of five actors who have been added to the cast of Before I Fall, an upcoming feature film produced by multi-channel network AwesomenessTV.
Before I Fall, which will play out as sort of a morbid, high school version of Groundhog Day, will follow a teenager (Zoey Deutch) who must relive the last day of her life over and over again. It is based on a young adult novel written by Lauren Oliver, and its script, written Maria Maggenti, earned a spot on the 2011 Black List, which noted the year’s best unproduced screenplays. In addition to Lawley, other actors joining the film’s cast including Halston Sage, Logan Miller Diego Boneta, and Elena Kampouris.

What if you mixed Zombieland with Superbad? You’d have this movie.
The first trailer for Scouts Guide to a Zombie Apocalypse debuted on Thursday, which stars Tye Sheridan, Halston Sage, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan, David Koechner, and Patrick Schwarzegger. The movie is directed by Christopher Landon, who directed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.
The film’s synopsis is
Three scouts and lifelong friends join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes. When their peaceful town is ravaged by a zombie invasion, they’ll fight for the badge of a lifetime and put their scouting skills to the test to save mankind from the undead.
Sheridan is most known for his work in The Tree of Life, Mud, and Joe but it looks like he is cutting loose a little in this movie and attempting to show off his comedic chops.

If you haven't yet grown tired of winky zombie movies that present the undead in a new context, then there are some treats coming this fall. Next month, Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill and more face off against braineaters in "Cooties," and then a month later so do a bunch of boy scouts in "Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse." And the full length trailer is here for the latter. Joined by Logan Miller, Halston Sage, Sarah Dumont, Patrick Schwarzenegger and David Koechner with director Christopher Landon (multiple "Paranormal Activity" sequels) behind the camera, there's not much else to elaborate on besides what the title tells you, so here's the official synopsis: Three scouts and lifelong friends join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes. On August 14, 1971, Stanford University psychologist Philip Zimbardo initiated an experiment that has resonated for the succeeding 44 years. Twenty-four volunteers were rounded up and randomly divided into groups of "prisoners" and "guards," with the intent to study the psychology of individuals in the penal system. What happened is dramatized in the harrowing "Stanford Prison Experiment" and today we have an exclusive clip from the film. This exasperating film, winner of Sundance's screenplay and Alfred P. Sloan prizes, about the price of power tells the real-life story of Dr. Zimbardo's 1971 simulated prison study involving 18 male undergrads, randomly assigned the role of prisoner or guard, who are stripped of their humanity (among other things) by each other—and by their sadistic, psychologist puppeteer. (Think a more homoerotic, and claustrophobic, "Compliance".) The cast boasts many a dreamy indie "it" boy, including Ezra Miller (in a ferocious but all too brief turn), Keir Gilchrist, Jack Kilmer, Michael Angarano, James Wolk, Tye Sheridan and fresh-faced Sundance breakout Logan Miller. Billy Crudup astutely leads the ensemble as Philip Zimbardo, whose ill-conceived faux prison breaks them down and throws them into degrading, uncomfortable and sometimes erotic scenarios. Olivia Thirlby (in what is mostly a throwaway role) co-stars as Zimbardo's skeptical fiancee. Read...

Ah, scouting. Back in our younger days, it was all about Bob-a-Jobbing and trying not to curse the universe for sending all the rain every time we went camping. Now, however, it appears to be more about staying alive when zombies run amuck. Check out the first poster and a couple of clips from Scout’s Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. The movie – which seems to want to bottle a similar blend of silly and terrifying brought to the screen so magnificently by Shaun Of The Dead – finds three scouts, lifelong friends, who must team up with a tough cocktail waitress to try and save their town from a zombie invasion. Can these unlikely heroes make it through the undead apocalypse? They’ll need all their scouting skills, but we’re sure success would lead to the best badge ever created. Plus One (2013)
Directed by: Dennis Iliadis
Written by: Bill Gullo and Dennis Iliadis
Cast: Rhys Wakefield (David), Logan Miller (Teddy), Ashley Hinshaw (Jill), Natalie Hall (Melanie), Rohan Kymal (Angad)
“Plus One” may not seem like a straight up horror film. I found myself watching it early on and debating its horror chops. Maybe a little drama, maybe a little sci-fi swirled in. Thriller may be where you might find this disc residing in a bricks and mortar video store, if such a thing exists anymore. I’m going with horror though, and I can back it up by saying that “Plus One” goes where it’s really scary. Something supernatural happens and turns the volume way up on all the natural stuff like unrequited love, jealousy, anger, self-preservation, loneliness, paranoia, and the most terrifying of all adolescence.
David goes to visit his girlfriend,...

Sweetwater isn't easy to enjoy. For such a spare and tight film, there seems to be a lot of dead air. Part of that is because it brings together three narratives that don't mesh until nearly halfway into the film. The fun really begins once those three characters converge and things are truly sent spiraling. Like a ricocheting bullet, it's hard to determine where Sweetwater --directed by Logan Miller from a script by Andrew McKenzie, Logan, and brother Noah Miller -- is going to end. Violent and dark, this feels like a William Friedkin-esque attempt at a Western set in the New Mexico territory around the 1800s. There are rare spurts of humor and most of it is from the way that people are dispatched...

"Hasn't beaten me yet..." Grab your six-shooter and rally 'round for this fun trailer. A theatrical Us trailer has debuted for Sweetwater, or Sweet Vengeance, a western from director Logan Miller (of Touching Home) starring January Jones with the "strawberry hair, purple dress, all painted up." She ends up in a "blood triangle" involving a renegade Sheriff, played by Ed Harris, and a fanatical religious leader, played by Jason Isaacs. As much fun as this looks, I can't say I'm that interested, especially considering I haven't heard much positive buzz at all. Ed Harris looks like he'll be entertaining to watch but that's about it. Enjoy. Here's the full Us trailer for Logan Miller's Sweetwater (aka Sweet Vengeance), found via The Playlist: In the late 1800s, a fanatical religious leader, a renegade Sheriff, and a former prostitute collide in a blood triangle on the rugged plains of the New Mexico Territory.

Warning: this clip has some brief nudity and is Nsfw. Here's something you never exactly expect to happen at the party of the year. Everything is going great, there are glow sticks and drugs and drinks flowing freely. and also clones? As you can see in the above clip from the new sci-fi thriller +1, some serious strange happenings cause this particular party to take a turn, after a meteor strikes and creates a clone of everyone in the vicinity. Every clone is about 30 seconds behind the original person in the timeline, which of course, only makes the whole thing more confusing. It's like Project X meets Primer, or whatever other sci-fi/party movie mashup you want to choose. Starring Rhys Wakefield, who you might recognize from this summer's big surprise hit The Purge, plus Logan Miller and twins Colleen and Suzanne Dengel as that red-headed girl and her mysterious clone,...

Have you ever seen a movie about a group of high school (or perhaps college age) kids who go to a party, only to come up against something outrageously violent or dangerous or horrific? Of course you have. You're older than ten years old and you're reading film reviews on FEARnet. It's only pertinent because the new sci-fi / horror / feature-length Twilight Zone-ish movie called Plus One (or simply +1) is well aware of all those movies, and it knows you are too.
With that in mind, it's cool to note that Plus One is not about stalkers or monsters or alien invaders. As the title plainly indicates, it's a thriller about "plus ones." In other words, everyone at this rowdy house party seems to have spawned a double! Or a clone! Or something like that. Most of the partiers are way too distracted to notice the bizarre new arrivals, but...

Occupying the same sort of jigsaw-puzzle headspace as Donnie Darko and Primer, +1 starts more in the teen comedy vein of Can't Hardly Wait. In a party that redefines over-the-top (strippers, eyeball shots, flaming tennis balls!), all the leads have their own agendas: David (Rhys Wakefield) wants to get back together with his newly exed girlfriend, Jill (Ashley Hinshaw); horndog Teddy (Logan Miller) wants to score; and loner Allison (uncredited twins Colleen and Suzanne Dengel) just wants to get the hell away from all these bros and hos. But when a barely explained chronal anomaly strikes, all the partygoers get stuck in a time loop—though most are too blitzed to notice. What happens when you bump into yourself from 15 minutes ago?
