How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

It was probably inevitable that a critical and commercial success like Monsters would spawn a sequel. The general concern upon announcement was that it would fail to live up to the spirit of the original film, and would become just another generic alien shoot ‘em up. There was also a concern that there isn’t really an obvious way to continue the story in the original film. Monsters: Dark Continent - note the lack of a numeric designation in the film’s title — doesn’t really try to be a direct sequel. It’s a second offering in the universe created by the original film, and if the first film was a romance or road trip set against the backdrop of mysterious alien creatures,...

Giant alien creatures spread to the Middle East in the sequel Monsters: Dark Continent. Here's Ryan's review...
Giant bioluminescent space creatures dominated the horizon but not the plot in Gareth Edwards’ breakthrough film, Monsters. Shot run-and-gun style by Edwards and a tiny crew, Monsters was an unusual blend of road-trip drama with light touches of sci-fi; its focus was the growing friendship between a photograph journalist (Scoot McNairy) and his boss's daughter (Whitney Able) travelling across a Central America ravaged not so much by the title’s Lovecraftian kaiju but by a military intent on keeping them well away from American soil.
Monsters’ success saw Edwards move to Hollywood, where he’s so far headlined the daddy of all kaiju movies, Godzilla, and now set to head up another pop culture giant - the Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. This left production company Vertigo with a potential franchise on its hands,...

With Monsters: Dark Continent out in UK cinemas this weekend, director Tom Green talks to us about filming in the desert, Misfits and more.
In 2010, British director Gareth Edwards made a huge splash with his feature debut Monsters, a road trip drama with giant monsters stalking around in the background. It was an atmospheric movie that made ingenious use of its low budget; Monsters' success led to Edwards departing for Hollywood, where coveted franchises like Godzilla and Star Wars awaited.
Five years later, and director Tom Green brings us Monsters: Dark Continent, an entirely new story set in the same world as the first movie. A decade after a Nasa probe crashed in Mexico, bringing the giant monsters to Earth, their lumbering threat has spread to the Middle East. The Us Airforce is dispatched to bomb the creatures to prevent their spread, while on the ground, American troops try...

Suffers from a terrible case of cinematic aphasia. Clearly thinks it’s saying something important and deep, but makes no damn sense at all. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first movie

Congratulations to Monsters: Dark Continent for making history with perhaps the worst case ever of cinematic aphasia. This is a film that clearly thinks it’s saying something important and deep, but it makes no damn sense at all. The scenes and the dialogue and the plot and the subtext (which bits I can guess at): none of them connect up in any meaningful way, not on a small scale and not in the big picture. None of it communicates anything other than the fact that director and cowriter (with Jay Basu: Fast Girls) Tom Green (British TV director, not...

Before he helmed 2014's Godzilla, Gareth Edwards wrote and directed the 2010 cult film, Monsters. A character-driven love story with its titular alien entities effectively placed in the background for most of the movie's runtime, Monsters takes a unique approach to the creature feature subgenre, as does its sequel, Monsters: Dark Continent. With the follow-up film to Monsters now out in theaters and available on VOD from RADiUS, we had a chance to talk with the movie's co-writer and director, Tom Green, who discussed shooting in the Jordanian desert, realistically portraying military life, the large potential of the Monsters franchise, and much more.
Reminiscent of real life recent events (minus the creatures), Monsters: Dark Continent follows an American Army unit fighting both humans and monsters in the sands of the Middle East. The result is a gut-punch of a picture that unflinchingly explores the horrors of combat, the haunting psychological effects of war,...

This Time, It’s… Bore: Green’s Debut Piggybacks Indie Sci-Fi
Seeing as the cephalopod shaped extraterrestrials have only managed to move from conquering Mexico in Gareth Edwards’ well received 2010 indie sci-fi Monsters to the arid terrain of an unnamed Middle Eastern country in ten years time to Tom Green’s sequel Monsters: Dark Continent, one wonders just how many installments of these metaphoric, peripheral threats may be in store. Bleeding immediately out into unnecessary territory, its connection to the Edwards’ film may be the launching pad that lends the project relevancy, but this basic marketing ploy is only bound to backfire. Whereas Edwards’ film was a pleasant surprise considering what he was able to accomplish on a limited budget, Green’s follow up may have better special effects but otherwise fails to add anything of note.

Editor’s note: Our review of Monsters: Dark Continent originally ran during 2014’s London Film Festival, but we’re re-posting it now as the film opens on VOD and in limited theatrical release. Gareth Edwards’ 2010 film Monsters presented a refreshingly subtle allegory via a slow-building romance set against gorgeous cinematography and a world with a growing extraterrestrial population. Edwards went the Godzilla route for his follow-up and passed the sequel torch to first-time film director Tom Green for Monsters: Dark Continent, and Green frustratingly takes the film in a grandiose political direction resulting in a film that lacks both nuance and the specifics to back it up. Ten years after Monsters, the Middle East had become the new “infected zone” in need of some good ‘ole American intervention. The United States has been dropping bombs on the worst of the infected region in an attempt to eradicate the creatures unsurprisingly killing innocent civilians in the process. This...

Four years after Gareth Edwards exploded onto the sci-fi scene with his inventive and industrious indie alien invasion flick Monsters, first-time director Tom Green delivers a sequel that bears little resemblance to the original, in tone, content or invention. Reportedly set 10 years after the events of the first film, Monsters: Dark Continent introduces us to a tight-knit unit of Us Army recruits, headed to the Middle East to continue an unspecified conflict. Parkes (Sam Keeley) and his buddies ship out for their first tour, only to be greeted by Staff Sergeant Frater (Johnny Harris), a shredded and shellshocked commanding officer barely clinging to his sanity. Inevitably, the unit's largely irrelevant mission goes awry, and Parkes, Frater and the dwindling number of surviving teammates must...

The Us army has to battle the monsters and a new insurgency in the Middle East at the same time.

Gareth Edwards's 2010 debut, Monsters, was set in Mexico and drew parallels between its heroes' efforts to keep the gigantic lifeforms in the "infected zones" and real-life U.S. border policy. This 2015 follow-up, helmed by Tom Green, moves the action to the Middle East, where sometime in the future our latest war against insurgents is now complicated by gargantuan arthropods (rendered with impressive and convincing CGI). Monsters: Dark Continent spins its wheels in Detroit and the early days of a squad's tour of duty before the glimmer of a plot arrives in the form of a rescue mission, and even that is only thin connective tissue between episodes of danger and despair. It's taxing to watch, and Green moves between scenes with Malick-inspired ellip...

Before he directed the Godzilla remake, Gareth Edwards made a small sci-fi film called Monsters, which was released back in 2010. Made on a reported budget of only $500,000, it was more of a relationship drama than anything else, as aliens had taken over Mexico and two people attempted to make their way out of the "Infected Zone" and into the United States. It was a decent enough movie, showcasing more the talent of Edwards and, at the time, newcomer Scoot McNairy, but in the end it was a slight picture, hindered more by its budget than anything else. Now, five years later, Edwards has moved on (next up is the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One) and director Tom Green has picked up the Monsters mantle with Monsters: Dark Continent. Similar to the first film, the focus isn't on the aliens, which appear to have become a global threat, but more on...

Set ten years later, Monsters: Dark Continent is a very different beast to its predecessor. While Monsters was a love story and road movie set against a shattered Latin American backdrop - okay, with some pretty spectacular aliens dropping in to have their say - this one is an out-and-out war movie. The film has a new, and presumably final, trailer to share a little more of what's involved.brightcove.createExperiences();With Gareth Edwards taking an executive producer credit and a back seat, it's Misfits man Tom Green who called the shots on this one. And there's a lot of them: the monsters this time are at the centre of a combat-strewn maelstrom in which an unnamed insurgency is leaving a squad of Us soldiers trapped between a rock and a hard, tentacly place. The bullets start flying and the extra-terrestrials are suddenly a less benign presence than we remember.

When Gareth Edwards’ original Monsters came out in 2010, it was a welcome breath of fresh air for the sci-fi genre – an atypically thoughtful and atmospheric drama about two humans falling in love and learning to wonder at the otherworldly beauty of a strange new world being born around them. Shot on a shoestring budget with visual effects Edwards created in his bedroom, it was a marvelous, unexpected film that left you thinking.
That’s what makes it all the more soul-crushing to report that Monsters: Dark Continent, though impressively directed by Tom Green (Edwards moved onto the big-budget Godzilla, the awfulness of which I’ll condemn until my dying breath), bears resemblance to its predecessor in name alone. In terms of narrative, genre, tone and structure, it’s both drastically different and woefully inferior, to such a degree that it’s actually hobbled by bearing the Monsters brand.

Exclusive: Hot British writer Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) has been tapped by Universal Pictures to join its efforts to relaunch its library of classic monster movies.
As previously reported by Deadline, Universal is developing a substantial new production endeavor that will expand and unify a network of classic characters and stories. The architects of that narrative are Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Kurtzman’s credits include Transformers, Star Trek and The Amazing Spider-Man, while Morgan is the writer behind five installments of Universal’s The Fast And The Furious franchise.
Basu’s action adventure The Pier, which he co-wrote with David Bowers, was recently voted runner up in the annual Brit List of best unproduced screenplays. Basu also co-penned Vertigo Films’ sequel Monsters: Dark Continent with writer-director Tom Green, which is in postproduction.
The prolific Basu first appeared on the Brit List at age 29 with GBH in 2008. Since then...

Back in 2010, the Mayhem Festival hosted a screening of Gareth Edwards’ micro budget debut Monsters. Edwards was in attendance and took part in both a Q&A, and held a “masterclass” session in which he discussed the approach he’d taken to creating such an ambitious picture on such a low budget. It was a fascinating insight, and a privilege to listen to such an energetic, enthusiastic young director. Flash forward to 2014, and things are looking very different for that young director. He’s already released his updated Godzilla – a film which shares a significant amount of DNA with Monsters – and is moving on to both a Godzilla sequel, and an as yet untitled Star Wars spin off feature. Not bad at all.

Director: Tom Green; Screenwriters: Tom Green, Jay Basu; Starring: Johnny Harris, Sam Keeley, Joe Dempsie, Kyle Soller, Nicholas Pinnock, Parker Sawyers; Running time: 123 mins; Certificate: 15
Produced on a shoestring budget with prosumer camera gear and bedroom-made digital effects, Monsters was a minor miracle of a film. Its director Gareth Edwards is now in charge of the Godzilla franchise and working on a Star Wars spinoff, and it's easy to see why when you look back at his 2010 breakthrough. Focusing on two lost souls wandering through Central America's infected zone after an alien invasion, it juxtaposed an intimate human story with bigger sci-fi ambition. Terrence Malick meets monsters from outer space.
Unfortunately, all this subtlety goes out the window for sequel Monsters: Dark Continent, which chooses to make war not love. Edwards remains as executive producer, but directing chores are handed over to Misfits helmer Tom Green, who co-writes with Jay Basu.

Four years after Gareth Edwards exploded onto the sci-fi scene with his inventive and industrious indie alien invasion flick Monsters, first-time director Tom Green delivers a sequel that bears little resemblance to the original, in tone, content or invention.Reportedly set 10 years after the events of the first film, Monsters: Dark Continent introduces us to a tight-knit unit of Us Army recruits, headed to the Middle East to continue an unspecified conflict. Parkes (Sam Keeley) and his buddies ship out for their first tour, only to be greeted by Staff Sergeant Frater (Johnny Harris), a shredded and shellshocked commanding officer barely clinging to his sanity.Inevitably, the unit's largely irrelevant mission goes awry, and Parkes, Frater and the dwindling number of surviving teammates must successfully traverse...

Last year, Empire hosted the BFI London Film Festival's Laugh Gala. This time, though, we swapped chuckles for frag grenades and Humvees, strapped on our night-vision goggles and headed into Leicester Square to introduce Monsters: Dark Continent to the world. Cast, crew and an array of expectant eyeballs were in attendance for the film’s world premiere.Co-writer / director Tom Green was on hand to introduce his cast of G.I.s and his loyal production partners at Vertigo Films, before smashing a metaphorical champagne bottle on the IMAX screen and launching his extra-terrestrial mayhem out into the world.Unlike Gareth Edwards’ Monsters, this one is a straight-up war film that by turn channels The Hurt Locker, Generation Kill and Tremors. Balls are out and weapons are free as Johnny Harris and his squad of Us soldiers negotiate the twin perils of seemingly hostile aliens, by now stomping across the Middle-East in vast herds,...

Gareth Edwards’ Monsters took the science-fiction world by storm when released in 2010. For not only did he craft a sensational creature feature and post-Apocalyptic romance, he did it for a micro-percent of the usual Hollywood budget. A marvel of ingenuity, aspiration and determination, it redefined what could be achieved by a savvy genre enthusiast when working off-the-leash within the British independent cinema arena. Edwards of course graduated to the A-List with Godzilla and Star Wars projects. And it looks like the same could happen to Tom Green who makes his remarkable feature directing debut with the continuation Monsters: Dark Continent. On a par with the original in terms of skill, confidence and astute fantasy feel, Green crafts his own inspirational vision using Edwards’ concepts, ethos and elegiac universe while expanding the myth in extraordinarily thrilling and thought-provoking ways.

Gareth Edwards’ Monsters was an atmospheric homage to classic Kaiju cinema that not only earned the filmmaker gigs making Godzilla and a Star Wars spinoff, but also drew enough love from fans that a sequel is in the works. Today we’ve got the new trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent – which sort of sounds like a ride at Busch Gardens, Tampa. Edwards is obviously way too busy to return to the film that launched his career, so director Tom Green (not the comedian…) has stepped in to take a seat behind the camera. How one views this change and the new clip is going to be dependent upon how they felt about the original Monsters. Like most Hollywood sequels, Dark Continent looks to up the ante on basically everything. Where the first film was a quiet and...

We'd already had a pretty good look at the aliens in Monsters: Dark Continent but it looks like Vertigo is putting it all out there before the movie's release and a newly minted trailer has appeared that features even more alien action.

The new trailer for Tom Green's Monsters: Dark Continent has arrived. The movie is a sequel to Gareth Edward's 2010 pic Monsters. Check out the trailer below.
In the sequel, a Nasa probe returning to earth with samples of an alien life form, crashes over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear, and half of Mexico was quarantined as an Infected Zone. Six years after the Nasa probe returned to Earth, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"... The story begins when a Us journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the Us border.
Though Edwards is now busy making Hollywood pics like Star Wars and Godzilla 2, he was on as producer for Dark Continent.
Monsters: Dark Continent opens in the UK on November 28.

Before Godzilla, there was Monsters — director Gareth Edwards’ critically-acclaimed 2010 movie about the invasion of Earth by a race of giant, tentacled behemoths. This month, in the wake of Edwards’ success resurrecting the iconic Japanese monster, his own beasties are making their own comeback in Monsters: Dark Continent. With Edwards busy not only on the next installment of the Legendary’s Godzilla franchise, but also his upcoming Star Wars gig, he only served as executive producer on this follow-up, with directorial duties handled by Tom Green, known for his work on British television series Misfits and Blackout. Before scoring the "Godzilla" reboot, Gareth Edwards made his name on the low-budget but acclaimed "Monsters" - a story exploring a relationship of two people in a world in which aliens have landed and have been quarantined.
Now, following a brief teaser months ago, the full trailer for the Tom Green-directed sequel "Monsters: Dark Continent" has arrived. The tone is different in this outing, there's more creatures and more action in a quite different looking film which has yet to score a U.S. distributor. The film is slated to open November 28th in the U.K. though.

A new trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent has premiered, giving a second look at the sequel to Godzilla remake director, Gareth Edwards's break-out, low budget film from 2010. Dark Continent is set seven years after the events of Monsters, and the 'Infected Zones' have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain, with disparate communities struggling for survival. Amidst the turmoil, two soldiers embark on a life-altering mission through the dark heart of monster territory in the deserts. By the time they reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that fighting the monsters is just the beginning of their war. Tom Green has taken over the directing chair from Edwards and while the film doesn't yet have a domestic release, it will hit UK theaters on November 28. Director Tom Green’s (no, not that Tom Green) “Monsters: Dark Continent” looks a heck of a lot better than I had expected. I’m not sure what kind of budget they had for this thing, but apparently they didn’t skimp on the visuals, cause the monsters here are pretty nice. Definitely not Syfy Channel material. It looks like Green had more to work with than Gareth Edwards did when he did the original “Monsters” back in 2010. Anyways, check out more extensive footage from the “Monster” sequel in a new trailer. It’s too bad this movie will likely go straight to DVD (or these days, straight to VOD) in the states with a limited theatrical release, if that. That seems to be the usual route these days for films without a bona fide box office star. Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have now spread worldwide.

"Killin' martians, baby." The most recent trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent, the sequel to Godzilla director Gareth Edwards' breakthrough indie sensation, showed off the larger scale story at the center of the follow-up. Now we get to see even more action as we follow a group of soldiers tasked with taking down some of the creatures across the globe. Thankfully though, it doesn't seem like they've completely thrown out the character-driven angle that made the first film so great as there seem to be hints of drama akin to Zero Dark Thirty or Black Hawk Down. This actually looks pretty decent, so we hope it ends up in the Us. Here's the new UK trailer for Tom Green's Monsters: Dark Continent from Vertigo Films UK: Monsters: Dark Continent is the sequel to Gareth Edwards' Monsters. Vertigo Films has debuted an all-new trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent, the anticipated sequel to 2010’s beloved cult hit that is due to release later this year.

The handiwork of a debutant director, Tom Green, and shot on location, in Jordan, with a small cast and big ambitions, Monsters: Dark Continent shares many things with Gareth Edwards’ original film. That DNA extends, of course, to the tentacle-y aliens themselves, flaunted in all their extra-terrestrial magnificence in the movie’s new trailer.Set ten years after Monsters, the Edwards exec-produced ‘continuation’ heads east, where a new strain of alien sand bugs have taken up icky residence. Combat troops Noah (Johnny Harris), Frankie (Joe Dempsie) and Michael (Sam Keeley) are in on the bug hunt across Arabian deserts and into the maws of death. With a whole mess of years elapsed since that Nasa probe crash-landed in Latin America, the aliens have adapted efficiently to their new environment. Environments, actually. There are now infected zones dotted across the globe and the idea of harmonious co-existence, touched on in the first film,...

We’ve seen a couple of teasers already for the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ debut and there’s a clear shift in focus, if not in tone.
One of the most impressive elements of the first film was the world Edwards created; a world much like our own, tangibly altered by an alien invasion unlike any we’d seen before.
This is a very different set up to Edwards’ film with almost a decade gone since the events of the first film and society is falling apart. Humankind is being threatened by the advancing ambitions of the titular invaders and humankind is turning to ever more desperate means to save themselves.
Tom Green takes the directing reins with Edwards wearing his Exec-producer trousers. This new trailer gives a good look at what to expect.
