Zac Efron is following The Iron Claw with a new Ti West movie, based on the graphic novel Night Business. More on the film here.
It looks like we may have lost Ti West to the 1980s – at least for a while longer – if a recent report from Daniel Richtman is true.
Richtman is claiming that West’s next film will be Night Business, a 1980s set trashy thriller based on the graphic novel of the same name. The X and Pearl director has recently completed MaXXXine, the third film in his era-hopping horror series. MaXXXine releases in July and is also partly about a serial killer at large in 1980s Los Angeles.
While Ti West has publicly stated that another film in that series could yet happen, his next project looks more likely to be Night Business. Here’s the synopsis, as picked up by World Of Reel:

With the release of MaXXXine less than two months away, Ti West is setting up his next project, which sounds like another helping of pure ’80s sleaze. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Zac Efron is reportedly in talks to star in Night Business, a series adaptation of the cult graphic novel by Benjamin Marra, which Ti West will direct.
A24 will produce the Night Business series with Nathaniel Halpern (Legion) writing the script and serving as showrunner. Here’s the logline: “In this 1980s-trash-culture homage where a knife-wielding killer is on the loose, committing extreme acts of violence on exotic dancers. Only one man has a will powerful enough to stop this psychopath: Johnny Timothy. But can Johnny mete out his vengeance before more innocent victims have to die? A nasty brew of power, passion, vigilantes, and dangerous men raining street justice down upon their enemies.” Zac Efron would play Johnny Timothy,...

Lindsey Kasabian, who most recently led casting efforts at Touchstone Television (aka Fox 21 Television Studios) as Vice President, has been named Senior Vice President of Casting for Freeform. Kasabian replaces Elizabeth Boykewich, who departed the Disney cable network as head of casting and talent earlier this month as part of the regime change at the net last May.
Working closely with Freeform President Tara Duncan, Kasabian will be responsible for identifying and helping to select the acting talent for all ongoing series and pilots at the cable net. The new assignment is effective immediately.
“Lindsey is a gifted executive who has distinguished herself as someone producers and executives trust, and Tara and I knew she was just the right person to help lead Freeform’s casting going forward,” said Sharon Klein, EVP of Casting, Walt Disney Television, to whom Kasabian will report. “She is a champion of actors and...

Back when cross-country travel was safe and conceivable, I had a terrible habit of picking up a few dollars’ worth of scratch-off lottery tickets in whatever state I was in, throwing them in my purse, and forgetting about them until hours, sometimes days later. There was no logic behind it and it was rarely fruitful, except for any given state’s public education fund, I suppose.
There was one incident that made me think, though. It must have been after some trip back to the Midwest for the holidays, I came across a misbegotten scratcher from Nebraska — Eppley Airfield, what up — and realized that if it ended up being a big winner, it would be a colossal pain to try and collect on. Of course, this wasn’t an actual concern, what with the terrible odds of lotteries in general, but a girl could dream. A winning lottery ticket with no place to cash it,...

Cracking the surreal visual code of the Simon Stålenhag paintings that inspired “Tales from the Loop” was hard enough for veteran cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth. Their strange aura of a picnic tableau with discarded robots in barren landscapes had to somehow connect with showrunner Nathaniel Halpern’s sci-fi series about restoring humanity in a community deprived of love and intimacy. But the Emmy-nominated Cronenweth made a breakthrough while on location in Winnipeg by shooting exterior night scenes… in subzero temperatures… during Magic Hour.
“It was a problem that we were dealt from the very beginning because of the way the script’s written and the way time passes and having so little time at night to shoot with minors,” Cronenweth said. “But I was amazed at the amount of time we had at dusk once the sun shadows had become soft enough or dropped below the horizon line.”

On Tales from the Loop, VFX producer Andrea Knoll helped build a world around an art book by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, working to preserve its painterly feeling in every frame.
Created by Nathaniel Halpern, the sci-fi drama follows the unlikely journeys of townspeople living above “The Loop”, a machine built to tap into the mysteries of the universe. In bringing this retro-futuristic world to life, the Tales team embraced a combination of practical and visual effects, always with an eye toward photorealistic imagery.
Challenged to deliver feature-quality effects on a compressed TV schedule, Knoll faced myriad hurdles on the series, while designing everything from robots, to futuristic tractors, to bionic arms. Ultimately, though, she would earn her first Emmy nomination for her work, finding the project to be one of the most collaborative and rewarding of her career.

When composer Philip Glass was first approached by executive producer Mark Romanek to score “Tales From the Loop,” he was immediately drawn to the striking paintings of Simon Stålenhag that served as the basis for the existential sci-fi drama from Amazon Prime Video. Given his own spirituality, it was the perfect fit for Glass’ TV debut. Only he was too busy with other projects, so he suggested finding a collaborator — and that’s when Paul Leonard-Morgan joined the team.
It was no coincidence. Both had worked with documentary director Errol Morris, and Leonard-Morgan’s mesmerizing score for “Wormwood” was the clincher.
“The show is a unique narrative on humanity, so we didn’t want the score to feel like classic Hollywood, but more organic — like the music is just there in the loop, an integral part of the story,” Glass said.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the career of director Mark Romanek that his newest work, “Loop,” the pilot episode for eight-episode Amazon Studios series “Tales From the Loop,” is as visually arresting as it is conceptually bold and emotionally evocative.

Prizes at Cannes Lions and more have come his way for innovative, emotive spots for Apple, Tiffany, Nike and American Express, among others.

Back when Matt Reeves was a film student, the young Angeleno trekked to his local cinema to watch Krzysztof Kieślowski’s, “Dekalog.” And then he went back again, and again, for five consecutive nights.
Reeves’ devotion wasn’t based entirely in cinematic obsession. Kieślowski’s acclaimed epic is nearly 10 hours long, and the theater only screened two entries per night, so Reeves had to come back if he wanted to finish the journey. But that wasn’t how the movie was made to be seen because “Dekalog” isn’t a movie at all. It is, in fact, a television show — a television show that audiences, primarily American audiences, didn’t know how to describe.

Tales from the Loop is an unusual sort of sci-fi anthology show in that each separate story is united by a common pastoral setting and a dominant central family. This is no doubt in part because the series takes its inspiration from a series of unrelated but commonly themed paintings by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, which combine scenes of everyday life with a normalized science fiction sensibility. When we spoke to showrunner Nathaniel Halpern and actor Paul Schneider, they both emphasized this subtle style of storytelling as the hallmark of the show.
When we spoke to Halpern, it was well before Tales from the Loop dropped on Amazon on April 3, 2020, so we were still getting a sense for what the show was about and how the paintings inspired him. “At the inception of this it really was: how do you keep that sense of wonder alive in the series in...

"Tales From The Loop" draws inspiration from the creativity of Swedish artist Simon Stalenhag to set up a portrait of heartland America. Packaged as sci-fi drama, the eight-episode series comprises eight standalone stories set against a common backdrop where the extraordinary is a way of life.
The backdrop is a fictional Ohio locality and the extraordinary factor is the titular Loop, above which the locals live. The series explores the lives of these people, and how the Loop -- a machine that can realise the impossible -- affects their existence.
Stalenhag's artwork is trademarked by seemingly out-of-place sci-fi motifs that find a harmonious coexistence in canvases of gorgeous landscapes. The series tries capturing that impact in its motion picture frames, as everyday human life of the townsfolk finds a surreal balance with the Loop.
In a sense, given that premise, the series would seem like an attempt to understand contemporary...

While the stories in each episode of Tales from the Loop have a sci-fi twist, whether with time travel or parallel universes or mysterious machines, they are mostly grounded in life in the town of Mercer, Ohio. The Willard family is center stage much of the time, but even then Paul Schneider’s character George Willard is often at the periphery, and that’s kind of the point. Russ Willard may be the founder of the Center for Experimental Physics that houses the loop, but George, as we found out when we spoke to Schneider about his role, is anything but the heir apparent.
In fact, it might seem at first like George’s mechanical arm is his most interesting characteristic, but an undercurrent of resentment lies beneath his awkward exterior. “I love the fact that George has a robot arm, but the thing that I was most attracted to...

“Tales From the Loop” has all the elements of a mystery box show, except it’s largely — and wisely — uninterested in its mystery. Set in a small Ohio town at an undisclosed time, the new science-fiction series from creator Nathaniel Halpern (a writer on “Legion”) tracks the lives of various locals who are affected by the titular “Loop”: a massive black machine housed underground within an experimental physics center.
So, what’s this machine do? As the company’s founder, Russ (Jonathan Pryce), explains to his grandson, Cole (Duncan Joiner), The Loop “makes the impossible, possible.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Tales from the Loop,” streaming now on Amazon.
From the moment it was conceived, “Tales From the Loop” — which debuted Thursday night on Amazon Prime Video — was unlike any science fiction TV series ever conceived, for the simple reason that it’s based on a series of paintings by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.
Stålenhag’s artwork is at once everyday and fantastical — like a modest rural home sitting quietly in a winter landscape, while a robot stares almost plaintively at it from outside. When Nathaniel Halpern (“Legion”) first saw them while meeting with filmmaker Matt Reeves (“War for the Planet of the Apes”) at Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho nearly five years ago, he was immediately captivated.

“It’s very hard to have an original aesthetic, especially in the science fiction genre,” Halpern tells Variety. “There’s something about...

Amazon's sci-fi series Tales From the Loop is loosely based on the book of the same name by Simon Stålenhag — but it's really a televisual interpretation of the Swedish artist's paintings that depict picturesque landscapes punctuated by robots or futuristic technology; Edward Hopper with a sci-fi flair.
Creator Nathaniel Halpern told The Hollywood Reporter that he was "quite taken" by Stålenhag's unique aesthetic when producer Matt Reeves (Batman) and his partners first introduced him to the painter's work.

Nathaniel Halpern, who wrote and executive produced all eight episodes of Tales from the Loop, looked at the paintings of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag and saw them as story starters, images that suggested a larger narrative. When the show premieres on Amazon Prime Video on April 3, 2020, it will in fact feature vignettes from the small Ohio town built above a particle accelerator, a facility which is designed to unlock the secrets of the universe but which also causes the strange occurrences illustrated in the Stålenhag paintings with their sci-fi elements mixed with everyday life.
This strange juxtaposition of mundane and futuristic certainly was the principal appeal for Halpern as a writer. “I was just immediately struck by the aesthetic and the world and more than anything the feeling of it, the genre elements aside. I just related to it,” says Halpern. “It felt very emotional and reminded me of childhood.

Nathaniel Halpern is an example of a creative talent that takes a while to bubble to the surface. Despite three years of writing and producing Noah Hawley’s “Legion” (two as co-executive producer), he doesn’t even have a wiki page yet. But, after “Tales From The Loop” finds its audience that will dramatically change.

Amazon’s new sci-fi series “Tales From the Loop” is a pretty difficult show to describe, even for its creator, Nathaniel Halpern, who also struggles with the idea of labeling it a sci-fi series at all.
“You’re making me flashback to when I had to pitch the show and it’s hard,” Halpern told TheWrap, when we made him try to compare his eight-episode Prime Video project, which launches Friday, to any other TV series that’s come before it. “Tonally, it’s rather unique and I don’t want to give the wrong impression, necessarily. It’s not a cynical or bleak show, so it’s certainly like the anti-‘Black Mirror.’ It’s not ‘Stranger Things,’ because it’s not trading on any kind of cultural nostalgia.”

Amazon Prime Video’s “Tales From the Loop” launches Friday and if you were wondering just what this new sci-fi show set in a town that resides above “The Loop” is all about, well TheWrap has an exclusive clip that won’t give you any answers, but will give you plenty more questions.
In the video, which you can view above, a tough little girl named Beth (Alessandra de Sa Pereira) is playing around with a pretty big robot in a large field when the police show up to warn her and her father that that thing is considered a menace by the other residents of their town.
Yeah, her father, Ed (played by Dan Bakkedahl), isn’t having it, insisting their large AI, which Beth controls via a device hooked up to her own body, isn’t bothering anyone. Though the cops leave, they don’t seem to buy this friendly neighborhood robot story.

Coronavirus fears have impacted SXSW Film with Apple’s decision to pull out of SXSW entirely, a move that will preclude the premieres of the Spike Jonze’s documentary “Beastie Boys Story” as well as screenings of “Central Park” from “Bob’s Burgers” creator Loren Bouchard and the docuseries “Home.” Sources close to the situation said that the Apple/A24 documentary “Boys State” may still screen since it isn’t a world premiere, though talent may not attend.
Also joining the fray of no-shows is Netflix, with Variety reporting that screenings of “Uncorked” and documentaries “A Secret Love,” “L.A. Originals,” “Mucho Mucho Amor,” and “Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics,” will no longer be at the event.
Earlier this week, Amazon Studios also pulled back from the event, which meant Greg Daniels’ sci-fi show “Upload” and Matt Reeves and Nathaniel Halpern’s “Tales From the Loop” also won’t premiere at the festival.

Apple said Wednesday that it has pulled out of attending SXSW, the film, TV, music and tech festival that is due to kick off next week in Austin. The move, which Deadline has confirmed, includes exits for the premieres of Apple originals like Spike Jonze’s documentary Beastie Boys Story.
Apple joins fellow tech biggies Facebook, Twitter and Amazon, who previously said they will exit the fest as companies continue to grapple with how to address the widening coronavirus epidemic in the U.S. and around the world.
Also no longer SXSW-bound with today’s Apple decision are special screenings of Central Park, the new animated series from Bob’s Burgers‘ Loren Bouchard; Home, a new docuseries that explores the world’s most innovative homes and their builders and Boys State, Apple and A24’s documentary they snapped up for a record $12 million at Sundance.

Amazon Studios will no longer be going to SXSW, Variety has learned. The two screenings and panels planned for “Tales of the Loop” and “Upload,” in addition to a consumer marketing activation, have been canceled amid concerns over the spread of coronavirus. So far, 11 cases of the respiratory illness have been confirmed in Texas, where SXSW takes place every year.
The move follows Facebook and Twitter’s recent decisions to withdraw their participation from the annual music, technology and entertainment festival in Austin, which runs from March 13 to March 22. It is not yet clear whether activities associated with non-studio divisions of Amazon have been canceled as well.
A screening of the first two episodes of “Upload” had been set for the afternoon of March 14 at the Stateside Theatre. Following the showing of science fiction comedy from “The Office’s” Greg Daniels, certain cast and crew members were slated to participate in a Q&a.

Amazon Prime Video’s Tales from the Loop is a sci-fi series set in an idyllic alternate history rife with robots and wonderment.
Tales from the Loop, an Amazon Prime Video sci-fi series, brandishes a motif centered on curiosity and awe against a pastoral backdrop that – complemented by its focus on kid protagonists – seems intent on tapping into the retro-1980s genre vein that has fueled Netflix’s Stranger Things to phenomenal success.
The series, headlined by Rebecca Hall, comes from rather original source material in the fantastical paintings of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Nathaniel Halpern is the credited creator of Tales from the Loop, on which he also serves as writer. The director’s chair is occupied by Mark Romanek, who helmed an array of iconic music videos from the 1990s, as well as Robin Williams’s creepy turn in 2002 film One Hour Photo and the ultimately-unfruitful 2011 Locke & Key TV pilot.
