It’s well known that in her decades-long career, Shonda Rhimes — the writer behind such television sensations as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “Bridgerton” — has smashed pervasive racist-casting tropes, and in doing so, changed the literal face of TV, whether that meant having “Scandal” revolve around Kerry Washington’s antihero Olivia Pope or elevating Regé-Jean Page to thirsty heights as a Black duke in Regency England on “Bridgerton.”
What’s talked about less is how Rhimes has changed the way people speak. Any parent of a teenager who’s heard the derisive usage of “pick me” from Meredith’s “Pick me! Choose me! Love me!” speech in Season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy” — used to describe, according to the Urban Dictionary, “a woman that is willing to do anything for male approval” — can tell you of Rhimes’ enduring power. Especially since that oratory was delivered in 2005, and given new life on TikTok.

The third season of Bridgerton is coming up soon, but fans of the book series will be curious about the change coming.

Bridgerton‘s third season is upon us, but even as fans eagerly await the arrival of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) love story, fans can’t help but wonder, which Bridgerton sibling will step up into the lead position for Netflix‘s previously ordered fourth season? When it comes to the order of things, fans of Julia Quinn’s books have had the Ton shaken up by Shondaland’s adaptation as Penelope and Colin’s story doesn’t unfold until the fourth book in the series lineup, following Benedict’s (Luke Thompson) romance with Sophie Beckett, a character who has yet-to-be introduced in the show. Liam Daniel/Netflix While it may seem like the logical thing for the TV series to return to order, picking up with Benedict’s love story in Season 4, it isn’t a foregone conclusion, especially without Season 3 to guide us as viewers.

Polin season gets underway on Bridgerton when the series returns in May, and Netflix has dropped quite the teaser to tide us over.
We’re unsure whether the clip was released to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but before you get too excited, there’s a severe lack of romance. That isn’t very Bridgerton of you, Netflix.
Instead, we see Colin (Luke Newton) getting an icy reception from Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).
The reason?
Penelope overheard the man she’d been pining for telling everyone he’d never court her.
So, she’s shocked when he dares to say he now misses her.

“You miss me, but you would never court me. Is that correct?” she wondered before telling him she had heard everything he said about her.
To her bewilderment, he wants to take the exchange away from the public’s prying eyes.

Netflix debuted a one-minute clip from Bridgerton season three during a special fan event featuring the cast, showrunner Jess Brownell, executive producer Shonda Rhimes, and author Julia Quinn. The clip, which was brought online immediately following the event, focuses on the prickly relationship between Penelope and Colin at the beginning of the long-awaited new season.
During the spoiler-free event, Rhimes said she’s most excited that this new season features a love story between characters we already know and root for. She also teased that a lot of characters will be finding themselves in new, interesting situations.
“Colin and Penelope are underdogs in many ways…we get to see these characters step into their power this year, which I think will make a lot of people who have ever had an unrequited crush or felt like an underdog before feel very seen,” added Jess Brownell.

Netflix has debuted a new batch of first-look images of Penelope and Colin’s budding romance in season 3 of ‘Bridgerton.’
Season 3 will be based on ‘Romancing Mister Bridgerton,’ the fourth book in Julia Quinn’s series. The third season finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) finally giving up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters.
But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly. Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder.

When Bridgerton season 3 was announced, many presumed the story would revolve around the next book in the series.
If you don’t know, the series, so far, has followed the exact same order as the Julia Quinn-written novels that they’re based on.
So far, seasons one and two followed the same trajectory as the book series with the first focusing on Daphne Bridgerton (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and the second following Anthony Bridgerton (played by Jonathan Bailey).
This would mean that season three of the Netflix series should be following Benedict Bridgerton (played by Luke Thompson).
Now, the showrunner, Jess Bromnell, is explaining why season three is instead, skipping Benedict’s story and moving onto a different book in the series, which focuses on Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan).

The Netflix series left something under the Bridgerton tree when it delivered five first-look photos at season three on Monday.

The third season of the hit Shondaland series will have a new showrunner, with Jess Brownell taking over from creator Chris Van Dusen, and will focus on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) for what is sure to be the will-they-won’t-they romance talk of the ton. “Bridgerton” is returning to Netflix in 2024, with the third season of the period drama waltzing onto streaming in two parts. The first four episodes will premiere on May 16, and the next four will be available to stream on June 13.
Along with the announcement, Netflix released a video stitching together previously seen footage with TikToks and social media posts from fans eager to revisit the upper crust of Regency-era London.
The Shondaland series will jump right into Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) romance in Season 3, diverting from the Julia Quinn books it’s based on. Meanwhile, Penelope will have to deal with her rift with Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), who, according to Netflix’s description, has found a new friend in an unlikely place. Over the past two seasons, Bridgerton has presented a diverse, inclusive vision of Regency England, but one criticism has plagued the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama: For all this progress, the show has yet to introduce a meaningful queer romance. While Bridgerton has flirted with queer love — Season 1 suggested Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) may be interested in exploring his sexuality — it has always stopped short of depicting it outright, preferring to leave LGBTQ+ characters on the margins or, in Benedict's case, to walk back their curiosity by plunging them into new heterosexual relationships.

Netflix’s new limited series Transatlantic is the inversion of the streamer’s recent Elvis-as-animated-spy comedy Agent Elvis.
With Agent Elvis, it was: Come for the silly premise, genre hijinks and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) masturbating chimpanzee, stay for the surprisingly well-researched exploration of 1960s and ’70s esoterica.
With Transatlantic, I came for what is a spectacular, perhaps under-known corner of history, with tendrils into 1930s and ’40s European cultural esoterica, and I was left with genre hijinks, surrealist wackiness and a lovable (thoroughly historically accurate) dog.
Take that as you will.
If Transatlantic arrived on Netflix with a guarantee that every viewer who tuned in would promptly go and learn more about the story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Villa Air-Bel, I would give it a strong recommendation.
The series, which hails from Unorthodox co-creator Anna Winger and Daniel Handler, is a frothy adventure yarn...

Netflix’s acclaimed drama Bridgerton no longer follows the blueprint of Julia Quinn’s novels. Instead of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) being the subject of season 3, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) will stand at the center of the drama. Now the show’s creators are explaining why they switched up the order.
Their explanation for the new order makes a great deal of sense.

Fans were shocked to learn that Colin and Penelope’s romance would be central to season 3. After all, their story is the subject of Quinn’s fifth novel, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.
“There are eight Bridgerton siblings, so there are eight books. We plan to follow each of their romantic stories,” Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Tonight. “We are not necessarily going in order. But we will be seeing each...

Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) has been a reasonably aloof character in Netflix’s Bridgerton. The second eldest sibling, he’s been able to live life on his terms for the most part. However, if fans take a closer look at the character, they will note that he’s a bit more interesting, than they may have initially thought.
Benedict is leading man material.

Fans of Quinn’s novels know that the details of Benedict’s love affair are the central focus of her third novel, An Offer From A Gentleman. In the book, Benedict encounters a woman named Sophie Beckett at a ball, the illegitimate daughter of an earl; the two have an intense meet-cute before they are separated in a Cinderella-like way.
Years later, after being outcast by her evil stepmother,...

The timeless Netflix series Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling books. The 19th-century set show centers on the Bridgerton siblings, who find love in the marriage market. Benedict (Luke Thompson) is the second oldest Bridgerton sibling following Anthony, but he seems more focused on his art and sex affairs than love.
Since fans know they will see Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington’s (Nicola Coughlan) love story in season 3, Benedict’s story won’t be placed front and center for quite some time.
