*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Vertical Entertainment. Director/writer: Alec Gillis. Cast: Lance Henriksen, Camille Balsamo, Matt Winston, Giovonnie Samuels and Winston James Francis. Harbinger Down was created by an experienced special effects crew. The director, Alec Gillis, has been associated with many sci-fi and horror films. As well, Harbinger Down is Studio Adi's first attempt to bring an independent feature to screen, focusing on their practical special effects. Also, the film was funded through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars were raised. The results are slightly mixed. Many of the special effects look heavily influenced by a previous Studio Adi undertaking, The Thing (2011) and the film's story is also inspired by this earlier film. Lighting is minimalized to almost hide the monstrous creations. Meanwhile, the story struggles to find impact. Harbinger Down misses the mark on a couple of.

There’s nothing that makes a horror fan wetter than the words “practical effects” (yup, coming out guns blazing in this review). In a time of dull, lifeless Adr oversaturation, the art of blowing up a prosthetic heads full of gooey physical liquids has become a thing of the past. But Amalgamated Dynamics Inc., the team behind such creature films as Starship Troopers, Tremors and numerous Alien entries, are just a few of the modern-day heroes who believe monster movies should rely on extensive practical make-up/animatronics – and they want to do things their way. That’s why they took to Kickstarter with an entirely practical homage to The Thing called Harbinger Down, smashing past its $350K goal in the name of all that’s squishy, horrific, and disgusting.
Harbinger Down is the brainchild of veteran effects wizard Alec Gillis, who served as writer and director on this 80s-themed passion project.

A new trailer has arrived for Harbinger Down ahead of the film's release tomorrow. Also in this round-up: a new teaser trailer for Cherry Tree, The Barn Indiegogo campaign, and DVD release details for horror-thriller Run, Hide, Die.
Harbinger Down: "A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without a mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for three decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Back in May of 2013 we told you about Harbinger Down, a tense, claustrophobic creature film that will feature only practical animatronic and makeup effects. We've followed the movie through every phase including a successful crowd funding campaign. Today the hard work and faith pays off!
Alec Gillis wrote and directed the flick with Adi co-founder Tom Woodruff, Jr. producing. Lance Henriksen, Matt Winston, Camille Balsamo, and Giovonnie Samuels star.

Oscar-nominated writer-director Lee Daniels made a huge impression with his sophomore effort, Precious, back in 2009, and now he returns with his third film, The Paperboy, with a very impressive cast headed up by Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and John Cusack.
The film debuted at Cannes earlier this year to mixed reviews (you can read our own review here), but I maintain optimism that the film will be excellent when it comes out later this year. The first trailer has now debuted over at Yahoo Movies, giving us our first look at the film.
“A directionless young man helps his reporter brother investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.”
Daniels is behind the camera, directing from a script he co-wrote with the author of the original novel, Peter Dexter.

By now we’re sure you’ve drooled over the Teen Choice Awards‘ Best Dressed, winced at the Worst, agreed or disagreed with our dream Anastasia Steele, and got the low-down on Beautiful Creatures from actress Camille Balsamo. Now it’s time to sit back, nosh on some dinner and be hypnotized by Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey doing a twist of sorts, Stephen “Twitch” Boss moving like the pro that he is, Carly Rae Jepsen being downright adorable and many other TCA attendees getting silly with us. Warning: Gif wall ahead!

While Twilight and The Hunger Games were sweeping up all kinds of surfboards at last night’s Teen Choice Awards, there was at least actress in the audience wondering if she’ll be getting up on that stage next year as part of another great young-adult-novel-turned-movie franchise. Well, we’re assuming as much. When we caught up with Beautiful Creatures co-star Camille Balsamo she was super excited about the movie, which they just finished shooting in New Orleans. Based on Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl‘s four book series, it’s about a boy named Ethan whose life in his boring, Civil War-obsessed town is turned upside down when he meets a mysterious girl named Lena — and he quite literally can’t get her out of his head. She and her family are Casters, people who wield all sorts of magical powers, and not necessarily for good. So will fans...
