Welcome To Issue 74!
If This Is Your First Time Here: Welcome! This is my weekly column where I talk about superhero movie news, rumors and speculation.
This Week: Between Suicide Squad's cast and new Batman V. Superman rumors, you gotta Marvel at how quickly DC is expanding.
The DC/WB Universe kind of exploded open yesterday and it was a bunch of fun. I guess I can and should start chronologically with the movie you’re going to see first: Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. BadAssDigest had a post that slyly confirmed that Doomsday is going to make it into the film while also bringing up a character who, in the comics, became KGBeast:
Lex Luthor has many agents making his dark agenda a reality, an agenda that includes keeping an eye on all metahumans, mainly a woman who walks the streets today but who is seen in pictures from the 1800s.

Announced as the movie to follow Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in Warner Bros. burgeoning DC Cinematic Universe, all eyes have been on David Ayers Suicide Squad (set for release August 5th 2015) lately, especially with a cast of A-listers being wooed for a place on the team of government backed villains turned anti-heroes. Well, the speculation can be put to rest, now that the full cast has been officially announced. Here's a break down of who's playing who. Will Smith will be taking on what is said to one of the three main leads as Deadshot, one of the DC Universe's foremost assassins. Claiming to "never miss", Deadshot is a master marksman, favouring a pair of wrist mounted silenced pistols. Originally introduced as a villain, recent years have seen him flipping back and forth between bad guy and anti-hero, depending on the job he has been hired to do.

Well, it's no longer a mystery/rumor. Announced this afternoon, Will Smith is definitely going to star alongside Tom Hardy in one of Warner Bros' recently announced planned DC comic book adaptations - "Suicide Squad" - which will be directed by David Ayers. The series follows a group of super-villains who are forced to go on covert missions for a shadowy government agency, in exchange for commuted sentences. Margot Robbie (who co-stars with Will Smith in the upcoming con-man/con-woman romantic-dramedy "Focus") is also on board, with Jared, Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne also joining the cast. We also can now...

The top three films at the Us box office this weekend are a sequel, an adaptation, and an original property. Leading the way is new release Dumb and Dumber To, the sequel to the Farrelly Brothers’ 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. The third film in the franchise saw original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles, and audiences responded well to the return of the duo, to the tune of $38 Million. Last weekend’s box office champion Big Hero 6 fell to second place, making $36 million over the weekend, a drop of just under 36% from its opening numbers last weekend. Christopher Nolan’s science fiction epic Interstellar rounds out the top three, making just under $30 million in its second week.
Beyond the top three, there’s a sharp dropoff in the box office totals, with Beyond the Lights coming in at $6.5 million. The latter is the only other weekend...

With David Ayers' DC super villain team-up Suicide Squad scheduled to hit the big screen on August 5th 2016, casting news has been trickling out, with The Wrap offering up some very interesting information, claiming that Jared Leto is being eyed by Warner Bros. to play the Clown Prince of Crime himself, The Joker. While it was inevitable that The Joker would be appearing in the DC's slate of upcoming movie, I think we all assumed he would be kept for a solo movie with Ben Affleck's Batman, not the second movie into the ambitious attempt to build a DC cinematic universe. What's more, The Wrap are also claiming that Leto is the second choice for the role, with Ryan Gosling originally approached, but the talks fell through when he was unwilling to sign a deal for multiple appearances as the character. If Leto is indeed in the running...

Moviegoers wanted to get scared the weekend before Halloween and critics opinions weren't going to matter much when it came to Universal Pictures' "Ouija." The new horror flick based on the iconic board game earned dismal reviews, but still opened at no. 1 with an estimated $20 million. That was slightly lower than expectations, but with a reported budget of $5 million "Ouija" will still pull an easy profit for the studio. Debuting at no. 2 was Lionsgate's "John Wick" with $14.1 million over the three-day. "Wick" actually debuted higher than pre-release polling indicated and is star Keanu Reeves' largest debut since 2008's "The Day the Earth Stood Still." That's not saying much, but after the dismal performance of "47 Ronin" last Christmas Reeves (and, no doubt, his agent) will take it. Last weekend's champ "Fury" dropped to no. 3 with another $13 million and $46 to date. David Ayers' WWII drama is looking at finishing somewhere between $80-90 million domestic.

David Ayers' "Fury" hit theaters hard this weekend and the World War II era drama easily took down two-time champ "Gone Girl" with $23.5 million. Starring Brad Pitt, Shia Labeouf and Logan Lerman, among others, "Fury" is reported to have cost $68 million. This writer has heard it actually cost over $100 million, but we'll go with the studio's number at this point. The one thing everyone can agree on, however, is that "Fury" was fully financed by Qed International and it will need significant international returns to break even. Considering Pitt's overseas star power that may not be a concern. "Fury" also marks Sony Pictures third no. 1 opener in a row after Screen Gems' surprise hit "No Good Deed" and Columbia Pictures' "The Equalizer." David Fincher's "Gone Girl" dropped to no. 2, but New Regency and 20th Century Fox are still smiling. "Girl" surpassed the $100 million mark in just...

We all knew breakdancing was an impressive form of art, but did you know it is also a language? Apparently both Brad Pitt and Jimmy Fallon speak it very well, as evidenced by Pitt's surprise appearance on “The Tonight Show” Wednesday night. The “Fury” star appeared in a short video with Fallon that saw the two of them communicating by getting down and then getting on up. Pitt at least has some familiarity with communicating through physical means, as the World War II saga's director David Ayers required the cast to fight one another on set every morning. If we’ve seen American soldiers mostly act heroically in movies, David Ayers’ “Fury” is supposed to show a more barbaric side, where soldiers cross legal and moral lines. Starring Brad Pitt, Shia Labeouf and more, “Fury” is set during the waning days of WWII and centers on a battle-hardened army sergeant (Pitt) who commands a Sherman tank and vows to get his five-man crew out alive on one last deadly mission behind enemy lines. One WWII veteran who consulted on the project and read the screenplay told the The New York Times that he is wary of Ayer’s film. “I don’t recall anyone having to kill a buddy. I am not looking forward to seeing it,” he admitted. The movie is evidently so realistic that an actor accidentally stabbed a stuntman—mistaken for a dummy lying on the ground—with a bayonet (the paper doesn’t say...

End Of Watch writer-director David Ayers takes us to 1945 Nazi Germany, where the allies are closing in on Hitler. Brad Pitt commands a tank crew that includes Logan Lerman, Shia Labeouf, Michael Pena, and John Bernthal. Here’s the new international trailer for the film, which will close the London Film Festival on October 19. Sony opens Fury two days earlier in North America, having moved its release up by a month.

Shia Labeouf and Jesse Eisenberg might be taking on the roles of stoners-turned-arms-dealers in a drama called Arms and the Dudes. The movie is being developed by The Hangover director/producer Todd Phillips, and he's the one who wants to cast the two actors in the lead roles.
According to THR the actors are in very early talks and there is still a long way to go before anything happens with the production. Phillips is co-writing the script with Jason Smilovic, and the story is based on Guy Lawson's Rolling Stone article, which follows two stoners from Miami Beach who became arms dealers for the U.S. government.
This could be a good project for the actors to take on. They'd make an interesting on screen team. Labeouf will next be seen in David Ayers' WWII tank drama Fury. Eisnenberg, on the other hand, is currently shooting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It's the dream team: Shia Labeouf and Jesse Eisenberg may be uniting to play stoner arms dealers. The duo is reportedly in talks to co-star in the black comedy "Arms & the Dudes" from director Todd Phillips (the "Hangover" films), according to Deadline. Based on Guy Lawson's Rolling Stone article, "Dudes" centers on the real life novice arms dealers from Miami who somehow won a contract from the Pentagon to furnish U.S. allies in Afghanistan with $300 million worth of weapons, only to eventually be charged with 71 counts of fraud. Jonah Hill was earlier rumored to be in talks for one of the leads, but has since exited the project. The film will be the first title from Phillips and Bradley Cooper's production company based at Warner Bros. They'll produce along with Mark Gordon, while Bryan Zuriff will act as exec producer. Jason Smilovic ("Lucky Number Slevin") is writing the script.

Packaged as a non-stop action extravaganza, David Ayers’ (“End of Watch”) “Sabotage” is not the movie you expect. That’s not to say there aren’t big action pieces, the structure is bookended by the two most notable incidents, but the main narrative thrust is supposed to be a mystery, though we’re not talking about a particularly mysterious, or memorable, mystery. And not one overly concerned with finding answers, either. The end result is never really in question, but that doesn’t matter, that’s not the point. What “Sabotage” is, at the film’s heart, is an excuse to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger be a complete and total badass. Nasty, mean, and appallingly violent at times, this is a film not even necessarily for Arnold fans, but for fans of pulpy late 1970s/early 1980s revenge tales, the kind that star Charles Bronson. “Sabotage” is like a bloodier version...

Las Vegas - Sony Pictures took center stage Wednesday afternoon at the 2014 CinemaCon as the Culver City based studio previewed the rest of its 2014 slate. Unlike earlier studio presentations, Sony discussed each released briefly before playing one long feature with previews of all their new films. There were two pictures that stood out above all the rest: Chris Miller and Phil Lord's "22 Jump Street" and David Ayers' World War II thriller "Fury." "22 Jump Street" is, of course, the sequel to the hit comedy "21 Jump Street" and Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back as mismatched undercover partners Schmidt and Jenko respectively. The film's early trailers have teased that Lord and Miller (who are coming off "The Lego Movie") haven't lost a step, but the footage Sony played today? No joke, "22" has a chance to be better than the original. You probably already know that Schmidt and Jenko are now heading to college,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger continues the post-gubernatorial Hollywood comeback that started with 2012′s The Expendables 2, with the one-liner laden Sabotage, which appears not to be content until it has checked the box of damn near every action flick standard. I have zero problem with this. Co-written with screenwriter Skip Woods (Hitman, The A-Team) and directed by David Ayers (Training Day, End of Watch) the film features Schwarzenegger as John “Breacher” Wharton, the hard-ass leader of an equally hard-ass crew of elite DEA operatives. When Breacher and his team stash a 10 million dollar haul after being sent to take down the safe house of a drug cartel, they’re slowly picked off one by one for their dirty deed. The familiar character actor is coming off a stellar 2012 with his acclaimed performance in “End of Watch,” co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He has been a working actor since 1994, and has uncompromisingly built his career through notable parts in “Crash” (2004), “Million Dollar Baby” (2004), “World Trade Center” (2006) and “The Lincoln Lawyer” (2011). Besides lending his voice to the character of Tito in “Turbo,” Peña will also portray Cesar Chavez in the 2013 biography film of the civil rights activist in “Chavez.”

Fury: Brad Pitt, who memorably played a Nazi scalper in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, is on the brink of returning to World War II. He’s in final negotiations to star in Fury, a drama that David Ayers (End of Watch) will direct, based on his script; the story takes place in the dying days of WWII as an American tank crew fights the Germans. [Deadline] Cinderella: Who will be the next Cinderella? Emma Watson turned down the starring role in Disney’s upcoming new version, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh, so the casting process continues. I always enjoy looking at alternate versions of the Oscar race. It’s just an experiment, but there are still a number of interesting dynamics that I notice about the year in awards contenders when playing around with eligible films.
In years past, I’ve wondered what were the No. 11 films in the two years that Oscar had a guaranteed crop of 10 Best Picture nominees. I’ve also considered what the Oscars nods would have looked like if you removed every contender that was actually nominated. This time around, I’m trying something a little different.
With the Academy only days away from announcing their noms, I wanted to look at how the race would look if you took out any of the contenders that hit in the final part of the year. Essentially, if you disqualified the films that went into release after September,...

Jake Gyllenhaal (Love and Other Drugs) and Michael Pena (Everything Must Go) try to serve and protect in End of Watch.
The crime movie delves into the gritty, dangerous world explored in another movie written by writer/director David Ayers, Training Day.
In End of Watch, Gyllenhaal and Pena play young, enthusiastic cops Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala, respectively, who form a brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the end of their watch. But that gets more difficult after they perform a routine traffic stop and confiscate some money and firearms. Turns out, the items belonged to a notorious drug cartel, and they put a price on the cops’ heads.

Check out Arnold Schwarzenegger on the set of David Ayers' Ten, Tweeted by the star as reported by Deadline. In Ten, scripted by Skip Woods (The A-Team, A Good Day to Die Hard), members of an elite DEA task force are being killed-off one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house. Also in the cast of the 2013 release are Malin Åkerman, Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway, Harold Perrineau, Olivia Williams and Terrence Howard. The film holding an estimated $40 million production budget, is being shot in Atlanta, Georgia, where the photo below was taken. This makes a good read in addition to Schwarzenegger's recent landing the lead in The Legend of Conan from Universal.

Riding on the success of cop drama End of Watch, director David Ayer is already in production on his next feature Ten, currently shooting in Atlanta. One of film’s stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger this afternoon tweeted “I’m having a great time working with David Ayers on my new movie, Ten” with a first look photo of himself in character.
Schwarzenegger stars as John “Breacher” Wharton, who appears in the photo to be a snarling thug but is actually the hard-as-nails leader of a DEA task force.
Check out the official synopsis below:
The film follows an elite DEA task force that deals with the world’s deadliest drug cartels. Specializing in complex mobile operations, the team executes a tactical raid on a cartel safe house. What looks to be a typical raid turns out to be an elaborate theft operation, pre-planned by the DEA squad. After hiding millions in stolen cash,...

Alternatively known as "Breacher" or "Ten" throughout pre-production, it looks like the latter, more boring title is sticking. But the next effort in the Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback/post-Governator career -- which will kick off with his first leading role in years in "The Last Stand" next year -- finds him sticking to the action genre he knows. But the first pic of him in character from the set leaves us asking a lot of questions, starting with: is he in a ska band now? We don't know for sure, but it seems Arnie borrowed his latest cut from a vegan punk who's studying 16th century lit with a minor in philosophy, who also plays in an avant-folk band. This is certainly a more slick Arnie than we've seen before. All the better to heist with, we suppose. The movie, penned by Skip Woods ("Swordfish," "The A-Team") and being directed by...

Arnold Schwarzenegger has sported some varied looks in his career, between Conan’s long locks to Total Recall’s waved ‘do to the spiky peaks of The Terminator and its sequels. But now the star of the last Empire cover has taken on an even more extreme look for his role in David Ayers’ Ten. Take a look!Arnie himself tweeted the picture with the message, “I’m having a great time working with David Ayer on my new movie, Ten.”Looking like a slightly fascistic cop in a dystopian world, he’s actually John “Breacher” Wharton, the tattooed hard nut leader of an elite squad of Drug Enforcement bruisers who assemble to raid a cartel’s safe house. But the supposedly police action is actually a cover-up for the team to rob the place of millions in illegal merchandise to sell. Yet when the team – which also includes Sam Worthington,...

The cop genre has gone through numerous guises and iterations, but End of Watch represents a serious, sometimes gripping, occasionally humorous (but always human) addition to the genre, which succeeds despite some early creative wrong-footing.
No one could accuse director David Ayers of venturing out of his comfort zone much, and like his best films, 2006’s underrated Harsh Times and Training Day (which he scripted) End of Watch offers that similar two-hander set-up. Tonally however, the film has more in common with the former than the Denzel Washington-headliner.
Officer Taylor and Officer Zavala (Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña, respectively) are two young police officers who patrol the hot and sweaty mean streets of (a vividly captured) South Central La. They’re a tight unit, both on the force and in their lives outside of the workplace. Taylor takes centre stage at his partner’s daughter’s Quinceañera, while Zavala...

Have you ever watched an episode of Cops and thought to yourself, “Gee, they should really turn this into a movie! That would be awesome!” Well, if these words, or something similar, have flown through your television-saturated brain at some point, then your wait is over and your wish has been granted.
End of Watch follows the lives of two blue-collar, street-level Lapd cops, Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena). Using the conceit that Brian is filming his daily life as an assignment for a film class, we watch through the lens of an “amateur” handheld video as the two cops patrol the streets, bust some baddies, shoot the breeze, uncover the nefarious dealings of a Mexican drug cartel, and live the typical lives of Lapd beat cops working in the grimy sections of the “City of Angels”.
If this summation is giving you an odd sense of deja vu,...
