Get your tissues ready: “The Iron Claw” will be available to stream on Max on May 10.
The A24 biographical sports drama debuted in theaters on Dec. 22 and received critical acclaim. Starring Zac Efron, Sean Durkin’s latest feature is based on the Von Erich wrestling dynasty, who suffered a series of tragic deaths in the family. Efron plays Kevin Von Erich, alongside Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich and Holt McCallany as patriarch Fritz Von Erich. Lily James plays Kevin’s wife Pam Adkisson and Maura Tierney plays matriarch Doris Von Erich.
Efron famously packed on pounds of muscle to portray the professional wrestler. “That necessity to be perfect — it became an obsession,” he told Variety for his December cover story. “It was a singular focus for months. And your life goes out the window during prep.

If you’re into wrestling or just love a good story, The Iron Claw gives you both. It’s exciting and emotional, keeping you hooked from start to finish. The film is based on the triumphs and tragedies of The Von Erich brothers as they strive to make a name for themselves in the world of wrestling.
Zac Efron with The Iron Claw co-stars Harris Dickinson, Stanley Simons, and Jeremy Allen White
The film is exceptionally touching and features amazing performances from its actors. Still, The Iron Claw was overlooked by the Oscars, receiving zero nods.
Not only was it shut out of the Oscars, but the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes did the same. Despite fan disappointment, its lead actor, Jeremy White expresses contentment and no regrets.

It’s a busy weekend for nominees and wannabes alike. A handful of Oscar darlings are newly available on streaming platforms, and a few worthwhile also-rans are out there for the taking, too.
What to watch this week: “Oppenheimer“
The Best Picture front-runner gets another boost thanks to its long-awaited streaming debut. Christopher Nolan recently nabbed the Directors Guild of America award, making his colossal biopic about the creation of the atomic bomb almost unbeatable. The movie first hit VOD in November, but “Oppenheimer” is now available on Peacock, which is owned by Universal, the movie’s distributor. Now it become death, destroyer of Oscar competition.
Other contenders:
“The Color Purple“: The newest adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer-winning novel didn’t fare as well with the Oscars as Warner Bros. hoped it would, but Danielle Brooks still made off with a nomination for the same role that earned...

Stars: Holt McCallany, Harris Dickinson, Jeremy Allen White, Stanley Simons, Zac Efron, Maura Tierney, Lily James | Written and Directed by Sean Durkin
For his third film, writer/director Sean Durkin delivers a feature based on the tragic true story of the Von Erich family. Believing that he was denied the chance to become a wrestling champion, the embittered Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany) has driven his sons to take that chance and become victorious. Set across the 1980s, The Iron Claw captures the familial triumphs and the tragedies which befell them inside and outside the ring.
As the Von Erich’s driving force, whether they like it or not, McCallany exceptionally brings alive the domineering father who uses his sons to achieve his unfulfilled dreams. There is never a threat of the character becoming cartoonish, as the verbally abusive figure proclaims his manipulations as being for the family’s good.

Zac Efron found it “very uncomfortable” standing around in his underwear between takes on the set of ‘The Iron Claw’.The actor, 36, plays wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the movie alongside Harris Dickinson, ‘The Bear’ star Jeremy Allen White and Stanley Simons as the rest of the wrestling Von Erich siblings, David, Kerry and Mike.Zac told Metro about the biggest downside of the part: “One of the jarring moments that I wasn’t expecting was when the wrestling stops, or there’s a cut, or in between set-ups or takes – you’ve just got to stand there with a whole crowd around, in your underwear.“And there’s nothing really going on.“That’s a different kind of feeling. I’ve never experienced that one before.“You just kind of gotta, like, where do you put your hands? On your hips? You can’t help it – there are people everywhere,...

In this true-life tale of TKOs and tragedy, there are dreadful consequences for a bunch of wrestling brothers who are too scared to show their real emotions. Could it change how men cry?
A stigma still looms over men weeping on screen. Tears are associated with weakness, crying something “little girls” do, vulnerability only hinted at rather than expressed freely. The Iron Claw is looking to crack open these outdated notions. In this moving, true-life drama, the tightknit Von Erich brothers are ruled by the steely fist of their father Fritz, played by Holt McCallany, who dictates the shape of their lives as he encourages them to fulfil his own failed dream of becoming the National Wrestling Alliance’s world heavyweight champ.

Exclusive: Following his critically acclaimed performance as Mike Von Erich in A24’s The Iron Claw, Stanley Simons has found a new agency to call home as he has signed with Gersh for representation.
Even though the film is filled with plenty of star power from Zac Efron to Jeremy Allen White, Simons holds his own as the youngest Von Erich brother and delivers some of the best moments from the movie. Following the film’s release, agencies from around town have been aggressive in trying to sign Simons with Gersh ultimately winning him over.
He gained attention for his role as Miles, the stoner ice cream store manager in Erin Vassilipoulos’ quirky feature film Superior, which premiered in the US Dramatic Competition at Sundance 2021. Stanley made his feature film debut in 2019 with the release of Peter Lee’s delightful Bronx love story Angelfish, playing alongside the remarkable Princess Nokia and Jimi Stanton.

For Zac Efron, A24’s The Iron Claw was the most challenging project in a career of more than two decades, but “in the best ways possible.”
In the film from writer-director Sean Durkin, he chronicles the real-life rise to greatness, and journey through gobsmacking tragedy, of Kevin Von Erich, the eldest son in a family of wrestlers, which has made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. Or at least, the eldest still alive as this particular story begins.
Following the drowning of firstborn Jack Jr. at the age of six, Kevin would step up as the gentle and loving leader of his siblings, working alongside brothers Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), David (Harris Dickinson) and Mike (Stanley Simons) to try to fulfill the impossible athletic expectations of their old-school, emotionally remote wrestler father, Fritz (Holt McCallany). Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with The Iron Claw, which tells the saga of the wrestling Von Erich family in two hours.
It begins with Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany), who wrestled in the ’60s. When they were old enough, Fritz got his sons Kevin (Zac Efron) and David (Harris Dickinson) in the ring, eventually training Mike (Stanley Simons) too. Kerry (Jeremy Allen White) only turned to wrestling after his Olympic hopes in 1980 were dashed by the U.S. boycott.
The A24 film is named after the Von Erichs’ signature move, but like any biopic, consolidating the life of its subject requires craft. In the case of the Von Erich family, that meant four brothers were all the film could handle. Youngest brother Chris Von Erich, who took his own life at age 21, is not included.

The Iron Claw is full of bruises. The family at the center of writer-director Sean Durkin’s film, the Von Erichs (a stage name much different than their surname Adkisson), revels in ring-induced contusions. The bodies of the boys in the ring take a collective beating, a constant amount of pressure and pleasure from winning wrestling bouts often organized by their father and coach, Jack (Holt McCallany). Durkin’s biopic initially celebrates the glory in the ring, but as time passes and the young men fall one-by-one, the filmmaker focuses on the moments before and after each match, on muscles about to break, on psyches hanging by a thread, on the sheer weight of generational masculinity forcing its way into their heads.

One funny aspect of particularly huge athletes is just how small they can make the average person look. Most people don't think of Jimmy Fallon as short, for instance, but he sure looks tiny when he's standing next to Shaquille O'Neale. Even famously big, tough guys can still look small when you place an even bigger, tougher guy next to them, such as when Vin Diesel had to stand next to Dwayne Johnson in multiple "Fast and Furious" movies. Director Justin Lin tried to use forced perspective to make them look equally matched in "Fast & Furious 6," but it didn't fool anyone.
A similar dynamic played out in the '80s between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kerry Von Erich, the wrestler played by Jeremy Allen White in "The Iron Claw." Wrestling hall-of-famer Cody Rhodes told WWE the famously huge Schwarzenegger didn't want to take a picture with Von Erich because he knew he'd look unimpressive in comparison.

“The Iron Claw” revolves around the Von Erich family, a dynasty of professional wrestlers who made history in the intensely competitive sport in the early 1980s. Based on a true story, the A24 drama features Von Erich brothers Kevin (Zac Efron), David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White) and Mike (Stanley Simons). One brother, however, was omitted from the film altogether: Chris Von Erich.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, “Iron Claw” filmmaker Sean Durkin explained why he decided not to include the youngest Von Erich, who also wrestled but struggled to match his brothers’ success due to his asthma and brittle bone condition. He died by suicide in 1991 at age 21.
“There was a repetition to it, and it was one more tragedy that the film couldn’t really withstand,” Durkin said of a version that included all the brothers. “I honestly don’t know if it would have gotten made.

When it comes to serious movies about wrestling, The Iron Claw is a bit unorthodox. During the height of wrestling’s popularity in the late ‘90s, we had two major documentaries on the subject via Wrestling with Shadows and Beyond the Mat. The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke was serious, but fictional, based loosely on the modern life of Jake “The Snake” Roberts and his contemporaries. The recent Fighting with My Family, meanwhile, was a sensationalized and comedic take on Saraya/Paige’s initial ascent in WWE.
By contrast, The Iron Claw is based on a bitterly true story that has always been considered one of the darkest corners in wrestling history. It has been the subject of several documentaries itself and has long been viewed as a rich resource for a potential Hollywood film. That’s because the rise and fall of World Class Championship Wrestling coincides with the story of the Von Erich family.

Chicago – An epic piece of miscasting puts “The Iron Claw” in a sleeper hold it’s never quite able to escape from … the pint sized gaping empty hole at its center has a name, and it is Zac Efron. Efron mistakenly believes that his admittedly drastic physical transformation will do his acting for him. But instead of looking tough, he instead looks distractingly cartoonish, like a He-Man doll come to life.

The outcomes in wrestling might be staged, but the pain is very real. Pro wrestlers grapple, smash, and slam each other around for our amusement, and several documentaries and features already consider the long-term physical and emotional effects of life in the ring. But Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw might be the best of them, a heartbreaking true story about one of the sport’s biggest dynasties and the curse they sought to climb out from under.
The film begins with Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany) in the ring, delivering his famous finishing move – from which the film gets its name – to an opponent as his fans cheer him on. But the majority of the film follows him in his career as a promoter in Texas, where his true iron grip is on his sons, each of whom he trains and berates in order to help them secure what...

As a dyed-in-the-wool wrestling fan, Sean Durkin's "The Iron Claw" was one of my most anticipated films of 2023. Based on the real-life story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty (real last name Adkisson), the film features Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich (my personal favorite of the Von Erich brothers), Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, and Maura Tierney as Doris Adkisson. For wrestling fans, the Von Erich story is the stuff of infamy, a dark moment in the industry's history that weighs heavy on the hearts of multiple generations. Pulling off "The Iron Claw" would be no easy feat for those involved, but the result is one of the best films of 2023.

Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” is less Christmas crowdpleaser than family downer, but this skillfully directed portrait of the tragic rise, fall, and resurrection of the Von Erich wrestling family dynasty should be a holiday hit for A24. Its stacked cast includes a Hollywood favorite with a beloved risen-from-the-ashes story of his own (Zac Efron), at least one super hot name right now (Jeremy Allen White), and a fast-rising indie darling on his way to becoming a household name (Harris Dickinson).
They, along with newcomer Stanley Simons, play the quartet of Von Erich brothers beset by misfortune and heroic episodes of prevailing throughout their 1980s wrestling careers, under the controlling clutch of their father’s (Holt McCallany) merciless management style and cruel kind of love. Maura Tierney, meanwhile, plays their mother as a woman numbed by grief amid the successive self-inflicted deaths of her children. To this day, Kevin Von Erich...

Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw picks up right where the acclaimed filmmaker’s first two films left off. 2011’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and 2020’s The Nest both received critical praise, as did the staggering performances of Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, respectively. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Zac Efron is now receiving the best reviews of his career in Durkin’s latest well-received drama about the tragic true story of the Von Erich wrestling family.
The A24 film centers on Efron’s Kevin Von Erich, as he’s the sole survivor of a real-life nuclear family that once included five other sons: Jack Jr, David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), Mike (Stanley Simons) and Chris. In a tough decision, Durkin cut the youngest brother, Chris, from the proceeding, since there’s only so much trauma an audience can handle in one two-hour-plus sitting.

“Zac Efron is a legitimate bonafide Hollywood superstar but that is not the reason he is in shades right now,” Craig Melvin said when he welcomed Zac, alongside his The Iron Claw co-stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons, to the show.
Zac then responded, “No, I’m sorry man. I feel weird being in shades. I just have a bit of an eye infection. But I really wanted to be here. It’s such a good movie, and I want to come see you guys and tell everyone about it.”
This isn’t the first time Zac‘s health has been a topic online.

Plot: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, part of a professional wrestling dynasty in the early 1980s, as they endure tragedy and triumph under the shadow of their domineering father and coach.
Review: The Iron Claw is a film that a lot of people in the movie and professional wrestling communities have been looking forward to. Especially after the episode of Dark Side of the Ring on the Von Erich “curse”, fascination with the subject has soared like a Kevin Von Erich flying crossbody. For me, too, having loved professional wrestling since I was a child, and having seen a lot of the Von Erich tragedy play out, I wondered how in the world Sean Durkin could turn this into a story that audiences could enjoy.
I’m not sure he accomplished that last bit. Don’t get me wrong; The Iron Claw is an incredible film; a harrowing,...

Zac Efron undergoes quite the transformation in The Iron Claw, putting on pounds of muscle to become professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich; he also dons a shaggy wig for the role and often wears tiny wrestling shorts in the ring.
“In the best way possible, I did not look anything like me. It was jarring at first, but we kind of put it together piece by piece,” Efron told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “Individually, the wig by itself looks kind of ridiculous; by themselves, the clothes look pretty crazy. When you put them all together in the sets that our team built and get out there in the ring under those lights, it looks like the Von Erichs, man, and that’s was our goal. I think it added a lot to it.”

There’s not much in the world of entertainment that’s more theatrical than professional wrestling. And in the wrestling world, it would be hard to find a story more dramatic than that of the Von Erichs, a family of grapplers who found as much misfortune as fortune and as much infamy as fame during their time within the squared circle. It’s a bit of a surprise that it’s taken so long for that story to be made into a movie. Writer/director Sean Durkin has finally done it, though. He’s brought us The Iron Claw.

This review contains spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
The world of professional wrestling is filled with enough tragedy to constitute its own dedicated documentary series about it, but there has never been a story of familial annihilation quite like the Von Erichs. Often compared to the Kennedy family, the Von Erichs were/are a dynasty of wrestling superstars and the subject of unimaginable despair. Telling their story outside of a documentary setting seems an impossible task, but Sean Durkin has done the impossible with "The Iron Claw." While marketed as a biopic, "The Iron Claw" is more like a dramatic retelling of the Von Erich story — a legend retold blow by blow and presented as if it were modern folklore. And yet despite the creative liberties taken — including a glaring omission (more on that later) — "The Iron Claw" is the type of drama that makes a home in the darkest...

Gladiators, pain freaks, brutes, clowns, true athletes, fake competitors: The slab-of-meat stars of professional wrestling are all those things. And back in the 1980s, when wrestling was reaching its cultural zenith, it almost looked as if you could divide the world between those who took wrestling on the level and those who dismissed it as a vulgar, over-the-top bad joke.
Yet it was never that simple. Even if you saw through the put-on nature of wrestling, you could still get off on the theater of it as cartoon spectacle. And a great many hard-core wrestling fans were actually in on the joke. They knew, on some level, that they were watching staged antics, yet that didn’t keep them from experiencing it all as “real.” If you’re wondering how that kind of cognitive dissonance works, welcome to the America that pro wrestling helped to usher in — an America in which Donald Trump,...

Writer-director Sean Durkin turns to a childhood obsession with a Texas wrestling dynasty and almost Shakespearean tragedy in The Iron Claw, a gritty, atmospheric, sometimes suffocatingly grim story of the Von Erich brothers, who ruled regional rings in the early ’80s with a then-inventive rock ‘n roll style of wrestling that won them rabid fans but at a cost.
Some families are snake-bit. The Kennedys are one that through the decades met success and unspeakable tragedy equally. The Wallendas, the great family circus trapeze family, also mixed glory with a high-wire act that didn’t always end well for some members. If any obsession straddles writer-director Sean Durkin’s three feature films to date, it’s family. The filmmaker’s cinematic gaze fixates with laser-like intensity on a structure that’s long stood as a key organizing unit of American society. While Durkin’s previous examinations tended toward the extremes, such as cultish devotion in Martha Marcy May Marlene and consumerist corrosion in The Nest, focusing on a more traditional nuclear family in The Iron Claw reveals a no less entropic force gnawing away at the structure.
Durkin’s tale of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty splits the difference between the psychological subjectivity of his debut feature and the chilly remove of its follow-up. In The Iron Claw, the filmmaker melds the reverence of a ringside fanatic with the rigor of someone who very clearly took the themes of Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull to heart. From tribulations and triumphs to tragedies,...

"Woo! Now you're flyin', boy!" A24 has revealed the official trailer for the film The Iron Claw, directed by Sean Durkin. Critics have been raving about this, set to open soon this month. The film is about the family of wrestlers, the Von Erich family, and their legacy as they popularized wrestling helping make it a big success. The film is centered around this Texas family, a dynasty of wrestlers from the 1960s onwards that had enormous success, and popularized the iron claw professional wrestling hold. However, they not only had to battle inside of the ring, but also fight the "Von Erich curse" outside of it. This stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson as Kevin, Kerry and David Von Erich, respectively. The film's cast also includes Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany, Stanley Simons, Brady Pierce, and Lily James, plus a few real wrestlers including Ryan Nemeth. This featurette...

Dr. Evil once said, “There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum. It’s breathtaking. I suggest you try it.” Perhaps Jeremy Allen White could have used the Austin Powers villain as a co-star while filming A24‘s The Iron Claw, as it might have made him feel better about an extreme body hair-shaving session he participated in for the highly-anticipated sports drama. Speaking with Variety about the upcoming film, White recalled shaving every inch of his body alongside co-stars Zac Efron and Harris Dickinson. “Our bodies had to be completely shaved,” White said. “We were strangers at the time. Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickson didn’t know each other well before shooting their new drama “The Iron Claw.”
But then came their first wardrobe fitting and camera tests. “Our bodies had to be completely shaved,” White told me at a reception for the film at NeueHouse Hollywood on Monday in Los Angeles. “We were strangers at the time. “They shaved everything,” Dickinson said.
White added, “It was incredible but we also looked ridiculous.”
Directed by Sean Durkin, the film tells the real-life story of the Von Erich brothers, Kevin (Efron), Kerry (White), David (Dickinson) and Mike (Stanley Simons), one of wrestling’s most famous families that suffered an enormous amount of personal tragedy.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that Season 3 of FX/Hulu’s The Bear will commence production in late February-early March.
We caught up with current Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Allen White aka young chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto on The Bear. White stars in the new A24 movie The Iron Claw as wrestler Kerry Von Erich aka “The Texas Tornado.” The movie about the tragedy-stricken wrestling Von Erich family opens on December 22. At a time when the middle of the country needs more movies, here’s a sports drama that plays straight to the heartland.

When we last saw Carmy on The Bear, he was locked in a walk-in fridge during the restaurant’s Friends and Family Night, an interlude which White tells us he “hopes” the character escapes from in Season 3. FX/Hulu recently announced a Season 3 of the 13-time Emmy-nominated series.

Jeremy Allen White tried his hand at transforming into famed wrestler Kerry Von Erich, aka the Texas Tornado, for “The Iron Claw” by, well, pumping iron.
The “Shameless” and “The Bear” actor stars in Sean Durkin’s ode to the (allegedly) cursed Von Erich family, whose five out of six sons died before turning 34. The A24 film is led by Zac Efron, with Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons also portraying Von Erich brothers, with Holt McCallany and Maura Tierney as their parents; Lily James co-stars.
Actor White said during a New York City Q&a for the film’s first East Coast screening that he didn’t believe it was “physically possible” to transform into Kerry Von Erich for the role.
“I knew I couldn’t get as big as Kerry. I just don’t think it was physically possible for me,” White said. “I’m a pretty little guy,...

Could A24 wrestle another Oscar contender into the mix while already having two strong candidates with “Past Lives” and “The Zone of Interest”?
At the beginning of “The Iron Claw,” the narrator says the Von Erich family is cursed. Towards the film’s latter half, when the supposed curse has reared its ugly head, a man sitting directly in front of me with a woman begins to weep physically and audibly intensely. The woman grabbed his head to comfort him, but it was proving too much for the gentleman, who grabbed his crutches and walked out of the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The woman quickly followed him. The two would return for the post-screening Q&a with writer-director Sean Durkin and cast members Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Stanley Simons.

With the fall festival circuit firmly in the rearview mirror, many of the most anticipated films of the 2023 fall season have already screened for critics. One of the last films that remained unseen was “The Iron Claw,” Sean Durkin’s new A24 sports drama that tells the story of the Von Erich wrestling family. The film, which stars Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich and Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, premiered in Dallas on Wednesday before screening for critics in Los Angeles on Sunday. And early reactions suggest that A24 could have another hit on its hands.
“The Iron Claw” documents the rapid rise to wrestling superstardom and even quicker fall toward tragedy that befell the Von Erich family. After family patriarch Fritz Von Erich (played by Holt McCallany in the film) built a following as a villainous heel on the wrestling circuit, his sons entered the business in quick succession.

Zac Efron‘s Iron Claw costar Stanley Simons is opening up about some funny moments on set.
The actor grew up watching High School Musical and playfully referenced the iconic Disney franchise while filming his new movie with Zac.

“I sung [some of 'Breaking Free'] to Zac when I was playing my music scene,” Stanley told the magazine. “That was definitely a life experience that I’ll never forget.”
He recalled, “When I was singing the song, he was like, ‘Oh, you’re not hitting it, you’re not hitting it.’ I was like, ‘Oh,’ and I redid it. And I think I did a good job!”
Stanley also thought about another HSM song while they were filming The Iron Claw.

“It’s like dance, gymnastics, combat sports… so many different things,” Jeremy Allen White, one of the film’s ensemble stars said to a packed ballroom of journalists at the glitzy Ritz Carlton Hotel downtown this morning.
The film centers on the famed (and ultimately tragic) story of the Von Erich brothers, who took their unique talents from their hometown of Denton, to the world wrestling stage, in time creating the notorious The Iron Claw move that wowed the sport in the ‘80s.
On why he felt it was the right story to bring to the big screen, writer/director/producer Sean Durkin said, “I’ve been a fan of [wrestling] since I was a kid, and...
