Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.
Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:
Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect...

You sickos have finally done it. Forced us into a conversation we thought was reserved for socials and online forums but is now turning mainstream. Are you happy? Do you feel proud of yourselves? It all started innocently enough, according to Vulture, when a commenter posted on a Q&a with Josh O’Connor in 2020, saying, “Josh could easily play Alfredo Linguini in [a] ‘Ratatouille’ movie.”
Not much was made of the comment initially, but in 2021, O’Connor admitted in an interview with Odessa Young that “Ratatouille” holds a soft spot in his heart and is one of the few films that can get him crying. Years later, he would add to this as he was making and marketing his recent films “La Chimera” and “Challengers,” saying Zendaya was a fan of ‘Ratatouille’ as well and that she and co-star Mike Faist would have viewing parties of it with him in between filming.

Elisabeth Moss put in two of the year's best - and diverse - performances in 2020, that of an abused wife in The Invisible Man and here, as writer Shirley Jackson, entrenched in a very different type of emotional warfare with her husband. Director Josephine Decker and screenwriter Sarah Gubbins take their lead from Susan Scarf Merrell's source book Shirley: A Novel, which blends factual detail with a fictional framework to present a psychodrama snapshot of the horror writer's life. Set at the height of Jackson's fame, the story revolves around the arrival to the home she shares with her husband Stanley (Michael Stuhlbarg) of a young couple (Odessa Young and Logan Lerman) building a disturbing atmosphere that draws on the sexual politics of the period as well as Jackson's own life to immerse us in the gripping power play of the house.

The end of “peak TV” — the never-ending expansion in the number of drama series being produced worldwide — could be a good thing, according to Wayne Garvie, President of International Production at Sony Pictures Television (Spt).
Speaking at a keynote at TV festival Series Mania on Wednesday, Garvie noted that despite the sharp decline in commissions for scripted TV in the U.S., “more drama is being commissioned now than most times in human history” and argued that in the boom times, “a lot of stuff that got made that people didn’t get to see (or) didn’t know it was happening.”
The new, post-peak era Garvie described as going “back to the future,” with producers doing more shows with traditional free-to-air broadcasters that they sell to channels worldwide. He highlighted the Sony’s new period drama Dope Girls, starring Mare of Easttown‘s Julianne Nicholson, Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects...

“It’s all true. Well, true myth, anyway,” says Thordur Palsson about The Damned, his Nordic horror film set in a 19th century Icelandic village besieged by zombies.
Odessa Young (HBO’s The Staircase) stars as Eva, a widow running an isolated fishing post in Iceland’s West Fjords in the 19th century. When a ship sinks just off the coast, Eva and her crew, snowed in and starving, have to choose to either rescue the shipwrecked or leave them to die.
Protagonist Pictures, which is handling worldwide sales for the film, co-repping the U.S. with CAA, will give buyers a sneak peek of The Damned at the European Film Market in Berlin this week.

Music video director and a Sundance Institute’s Screenwriter’s Intensive participant, we thought Zia Anger‘s avant-garde feature debut (or is it a sophomore film?) might drop this year, but Park City might actually be the best lieu to unpack a title that has closer ties with Utah. Filming took place late last year in Salt Lake City, with Odessa Young in the lead role — and cinematographer Ashley Connor behind the line.…...

Let’s start with the good news: “Manodrome” runs zero risk of inadvertently launching an online army of right wing grifters who use their misunderstanding of its message to hawk dubious supplements and training courses 25 years after its release. Which is more than can be said for David Fincher’s “Fight Club,” the movie it desperately wants to emulate. The bad news is that fact owes less to the film’s articulation of its ideas than its lack of charisma, which is almost certain to prevent it from making the kind of cultural imprint that would allow for misinterpretations in the first place.
While it’s often unfair to compare one movie so directly to another, the blatant similarities between “Manodrome” and “Fight Club” make it unavoidable here. John Trengrove’s new film follows Ralphie (Jesse Eisenberg), a directionless man who finds solace in lifting weights after being laid off from his maintenance job.

"Take back your power, Ralph!!" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for a film called Manodrome, an indie creation from South African filmmaker John Trengove (director of The Wound previously). This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival to mostly mixed to positive reviews - its a very slick film, although it doesn't particularly stand out much. Conflicted about his girlfriend's pregnancy, Ralphie's life spirals out of control when he meets a mysterious family of men. Manodrome is a clever criticism of toxic masculinity and fragile men who are obsessed with being men (you know the ones). Jesse Eisenberg stars as one of these guys who falls into this kind of cult for men, run by Adrien Brody. Then it gets really crazy... The cast also features Odessa Young, Philip Ettinger, Sallieu Sesay, Ethan Suplee, Evan Joningkeit, and Caleb Eberhardt. I saw this at Berlinale earlier in the year - it's a good film,...

Josephine Decker's 2020 film "Shirley" -- based on the novel by Susan Scarf Merrell -- is a biography of the legendary, and legendarily sour, horror author Shirley Jackson ... sort of.
Elisabeth Moss gives a truly great performance as Jackson, depicting her as a woman out of time, unwilling to play by the stuffy, sexist rules of "polite society." When a hen-like housewife peer of Jackson's whines that she might stain her couch with red wine, it's Jackson's instinct to upend her entire glass onto the upholstery. Jackson is depicted as cantankerous, lethargic, alcoholic, and mean.
"Shirley" centers on the relationship Jackson had with a wide-eyed college student named Rose Namser (Odessa Young), a young woman who is optimistic, happy in her new marriage, and eager to raise her unborn child. Jackson is childless and, as the film progresses, will reveal her resentment of that fact. Jackson is happy-ish in her marriage,...

Julia Garner is still hung up on the Madonna biopic.
After being cast as the Material Girl pop icon in June 2022, the film was shelved by Universal in January 2023. Madonna, who co-wrote, produced, and is set to direct her own life story for the big screen, recently announced a world tour.
However, “Inventing Anna” alum Garner teased that’s not the end of Madonna’s biopic.
“I don’t want to tell too much,” Garner said to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m going to keep things…fingers crossed.”
Garner reportedly endured an intense audition process to land the role of Madonna. The so-called boot camp was also attended by Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird, with singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira also having previously been considered for the lead part. Julia Fox was rumored to be cast as Madonna’s longtime friend and fellow actress Debi Mazar.

In Manodrome, cinema’s enduring love for frustrated male loners is brought, kicking and screaming, into the cold light of the present day. Set in an unnamed, crumbling city in the Northeast, it stars an against-type Jesse Eisenberg as a jacked-up, emotionally stunted gym bro who joins a cult of voluntarily and involuntarily celibate men. The director is John Trengrove, whose previous feature The Wound used a very real Xhosa rite of passage as a way to examine the ever-knotted rituals of male bonding. The subcultures in Manodrome are ostensibly a work of fiction but, exaggerated as they may be, are no less plausible or rife with intrigue.
What Manodrome suffers from is a case of spreading itself too thin. Eisenberg stars as Ralphie, a taxi driver with money problems and a meds addiction. Though they might be the least of his worries. Out shopping for baby supplies with his...

There’s a rich history of movies being entirely at odds with their cryptic titles—step forward Quantum of Solace—but for his follow-up to The Wound, South African director John Trengrove has picked a doozy, a title that sounds more like a dystopian Adam Sandler comedy than the dour story of urban disintegration that it actually is. Images of star Jesse Eisenberg sporting a mop of red hair for the film have been also something of a misdirect, perhaps giving some the impression that Manodrome, which premiered in Competition at the Berlin Film Festival, could be some kind of satirical emo Fight Club for sad-sacks. Fight Club comparisons actually do turn out to be (lightly) relevant, as are callbacks to Taxi Driver, but Manodrome is so achingly laborious and serious that it won’t be encroaching on either for virtual shelf space in the Toxic Masculinity section of anyone’s streaming library.

John Trengove’s searing 2017 debut, The Wound, explored the complex world of Xhosa masculinity via adolescent initiation rites that exposed thorny conflicts of sexuality and personal identity. The protagonist of the South African writer-director’s first English-language feature, Manodrome — played by a febrile Jesse Eisenberg in an eye-opening performance simmering with rage — is already fully inducted into the uneasy halls of manhood and finding it an uncomfortable fit. Barely scraping by financially and staring ahead at an unpromising future, the damaged Ralphie reaches for a lifeline with a shadowy cult of male separatists, which only makes his hold on reality unravel faster.
What Ralphie goes through over the course of this absorbing enough but bludgeoning portrait of corrosive masculinity makes him both victim and monster. Recently laid off from a corporate maintenance job, he’s struggling to make ends meet as an Uber driver and wondering how he’s going...
