In 2014 John Skipper, then the president of ESPN, and David Levy, then the president of Turner, signed the paperwork with the NBA to extend its TV deals with TNT and ESPN into 2025.
A decade later, and the veteran sports media executives are now teaming up to try and sell a new basketball league to TV networks and streaming services, one that they are betting will serve a fast-growing sector of the market: Women’s sports.
Skipper and Levy are among the investors in Unrivaled, a three-on-three women’s basketball league co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. Unrivaled will launch in January 2025, and Levy and Skipper will spearhead its media rights and sponsorship deals.

Star soccer player Megan Rapinoe has publicly criticized Korbin Albert, a young midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain (Psg) and the U.S. Women’s National Team (Uswnt), for her propagation of anti-lgbtq content and posts that mocked Rapinoe’s career-ending Achilles injury.
The two-time World Cup winner released a strong statement in response to Albert’s social media activity that expressed her disappointment and called for greater inclusivity and respect within the sport.
Albert, a 20-year-old midfielder who previously played for Notre Dame before she went professional in France, came under scrutiny when fans noticed that she had reposted several pieces of anti-lgbtq content on her TikTok account. Additionally, one fan discovered that Albert had liked a post that made light of Rapinoe’s ankle injury in her farewell game.

There comes a moment in many sports documentaries when viewers find themselves wondering whether they’ve drunk the Gatorade. All the fast cuts and swelling music, the bodily injuries and emotional agony, the triumphant moments and podium tears have a way of pushing our buttons.
In director Sarah Dowland’s “Sue Bird: In the Clutch,” that objectivity-questioning pause comes when the WNBA legend’s agent appears for an on-camera interview (she happens to be one of its executive producers as well). No arguing that agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas knows a great deal about Bird and even more about the changes in marketing strategies that women athletes have faced over the years. She also knows that optics matter, and it’s hard not to be a little frustrated that such an obviously biased cheerleader should appear as a source. (Another red flag: NBA Entertainment had a role in producing the doc.

As my 13-year-old son and I browsed a Buffalo, NY, record shop on a recent Saturday morning, his eyes were drawn to two action figures dangling from the wall. Both were from the popular ReAction toy line, known for its delightfully offbeat takes on pop-culture icons as diverse as Joe Strummer, Megan Rapinoe, Jimi Hendrix, the Creature From the Black Lagoon, and late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. The two figures my son grabbed confounded him even more than the Dee Snider hanging nearby. One of them was an intense, glasses-sporting figure brandishing a whip while wearing a red flower pot on his head. The other clutched a guitar while wearing shades and a yellow jumpsuit. “Devo,” I said happily, while starting to ponder this most unique and easily identifiable group.
What’s with the outfits? How did this band become so iconic? What did they do beyond “Whip It”? These are legitimate questions,...

When basketball legend Sue Bird decided to let a team of filmmakers capture her final season after playing 21 years in the WNBA, she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from watching her career be contextualized on film, but it turned out to be wonderful.
“You play such a long time — so many different moments, so many different memories — and to have it now, in this one film is amazing,” Bird said, visiting the Variety Studio presented by Audible at the Sundance Film Festival. “I think the hardest part throughout the process was showing those emotional moments.”
When she was on her own, the emotions flowed freely. “I’d be crying like a baby, like in the shower,” Bird admitted, laughing. “But then the minute I was in front of the cameras or in front of the crowd, the emotions didn’t always come,” she said, turning to the filmmakers seated alongside her.

Given the current dismal political and cultural climate as well as streaming services’ massive appetite for celebrity driven content, it comes as no surprise that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival is chock full of portrait documentaries. The podcast was initially conceived as a solo project for Glennon Doyle following the success of her 2020 memoir Untamed, but talking to a microphone alone in the closet where she writes just felt “boring.” So, after listening to a few recommended podcasts, a lightbulb went off — “Oh, podcasts are conversations!” — and she asked Amanda, who is also vp and general counsel of their non-profit Together Rising, to come on board. Wambach, a now-retired Olympic soccer player, appeared as a guest before becoming an official co-host.
They’re also rebranding — it’s now called We Can Do Hard Things (dropping the “with Glennon Doyle” to reflect that it’s a group effort) — and has new cover art that shows all three of them.

After spending two years attempting to overhaul its hypersexualized image in a bid to regain cultural cache, Victoria’s Secret looks to move away from its “woke” rebrand.
The lingerie company’s revenue is expected to hit $6.2 billion, down about 5% from the previous year and well below $7.5 billion in 2020.
Victoria’s Secret attempted to overhaul its image by having Megan Rapinoe as a brand ambassador and launching campaigns with transgender and plus-size models in a bid to promote body positivity and inclusivity.
Going forward, they hope to fuse their inclusiveness with sex appeal.
“Sexiness can be inclusive,” brand president Greg Unis recently told CNN. “Sexiness can celebrate the diverse experiences of our customers, and that’s what we’re focused on.”

Novak Djokovic has ranked the highest from all tennis players on the annual list of the most marketable athletes.
Every year, SportsPro releases a list of the most marketable athletes in the world. Last year, Serena Williams ranked second behind Cristiano Ronaldo , but the American is not an active player anymore.
Ronaldo also dropped on the list, to place number 27, as his biggest rival, Lionel Messi, took the top spot. However, this year, there were no tennis players in the Top 10, as the Argentinian was followed by LeBron James, Alex Morgan, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Megan Rapinoe, Mikael Shiffrin, Lewis Hamilton, Simone Biles, Kylian Mbappe, and Max Verstappen.
Yet, right after the Top 10, multiple tennis players found their spot. Novak Djokovic, who was the highest-ranked tennis player placed 11th, getting 87.96 out of 100 points. The Serb got 27.26 out of 35 for his brand strength, 41.97 out of 45 for total addressable market, and 18.73 out of 20 for economics.

Forget the NFL or NBA, NBC is betting that the next big thing in streaming might be your local high school football game.
The media giant is launching a new streaming service that’s part ESPN+, part YouTube and part MasterClass, meant to appeal to families, schools and communities with amateur sports teams.
The service, SportsEngine Play, will stream live matches from amateur teams (think high schools, etc.). The company says it has 90 cameras installed in 85 venues; however, coaches or spectators can also stream matches live to the service via their own smartphones or iPads, and NBC Sports is trying to encourage as many schools and coaches as possible to take advantage of the streaming capabilities.
Matches will also be available on-demand.
The service will also launch with complementary content featuring professional athletes, a MasterClass-esque offering with guides for specific sports and general advice for dealing with pressure or mental health,...

A Touch More, the production company founded by world-renowned athletes Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe, has announced the hiring of industry veteran Camille Bernier-Green as its head of development.
Last December, Variety exclusively revealed that Bird, a five-time Olympic gold medalist and basketball legend, and Rapinoe, a two-time FIFA World Cup-winning soccer superstar, would expand their influence beyond sports and launch the production company in partnership with Togethxr.
The label’s name is a reference to its mission to “bring a touch more understanding, connection, entertainment, and conversation to the evolving media landscape” by granting a platform to underrepresented voices of women, Lgbtqia+ and Bipoc creators.
News of Bernier-Green’s appointment comes after Rapinoe bid farewell to international soccer on Sunday, leading the US. Women’s National Team to a 2-0 triumph over South Africa.

The England Lionesses defeat to Spain in the Women’s World Cup Final was watched by a peak of 14.4M people yesterday across the BBC and ITV.
Coverage was shown on both channels for the first time in the women’s game but couldn’t match the record from last year’s Euros final of a 17.4M peak, or the plus-20M who watched the men lose to Italy in the Euros final. The UK audience was well ahead of the previous women’s World Cup final between the U.S. and the Netherlands, however.
The vast majority – around 12M peak – watched on the BBC, according to Barb data from overnights.tv. The two public broadcasters have been sharing coverage throughout, as per normal arrangements with major soccer competitions.

King Charles, as well as the Prince and Princess of Wales, are sharing their support for the English Women’s National Football Team after their loss to Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 final.
The team’s hopes of taking home their first world cup were dashed by a 1-0 loss to Spain, but the king expressed how their accomplishments were monumental nonetheless.
“This brings you, your manager and all your support team my heartfelt thoughts and commiserations on the result of the World Cup final,” read a statement from King Charles released by the palace on Sunday. “While I know how sore it must be, let none of you feel defeated, for to have reached the final at all is an immense tribute to your skill, determination and team spirit in the finest sporting tradition.”

U.S. Women’s National Team soccer coach Vlatko Andonovski has resigned, according to multiple reports, after failing to lead the squad past the Round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The powerhouse U.S team had previously never done worse than third place in the tournament, and were going for a third consecutive title and fifth overall this year.
Andonovski had many questioning his reliance on players such as Megan Rapinoe, who hadn’t played much before the tournament and seemed off in her play, corner kicks and, certainly, one vital penalty kick.
In the team’s Round of 16 game, which ended with a penalty shootout versus Sweden, strikes from players on both sides were poor, with several players missing the target including Rapinoe. Sweden won that contest 5-4 in penalties and advanced, eliminating the U.S. team which had entered the competition with the world No.

The United States women’s national soccer team was a heavy favorite to win the World Cup this summer. They were eliminated on Sunday, though, losing to Sweden in a penalty shootout in the round of 16. It was a stunning loss for the international powerhouse, which has won the previous two World Cups. Donald Trump and his fellow Maga patriots couldn’t contain their glee.

Sydney (Australia), Aug 6 (Ians) Sweden ended the top-ranked United States’ title defence on Sunday after prevailing in a dramatic penalty shootout, while the Netherlands downed underdogs South Africa 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sweden ranked third, inflicted the U.S.’ earliest-ever Women’s World Cup exit after winning a nerve-jangling penalty shootout 5-4. The two teams had been deadlocked 0-0 after extra time in Melbourne.
The U.S. missed three penalties in the shootout, including from retiring superstar Megan Rapinoe, and Sweden missed two, reports Xinhua.
In the seventh round of penalties, substitute Lina Hurtig proved Sweden’s hero, but only after a Var confirmation was needed to determine whether the ball had crossed the line before American keeper Alyssa Naeher caught it.

The U.S. Women’s Soccer team has crashed out of the 2023 World Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out loss against rivals Sweden.
This is the earliest Uswnt has been eliminated from a World Cup.
The epic penalty shootout ended 5-4 to Sweden. Penalties from players on both sides were poor, with several players missing the target, including Team U.S. maverick Megan Rapinoe. The shootout went to sudden death and Sweden clinched the win with a weak penalty that US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher initially saved. Still, the ball crept past her and trickled into the goal. Sweden progressed to the Quarter Finals where they will face Japan.
Team U.S. dominated the game, which was broadcast on Fox Sports. The young side dominated the possession and kept Sweden’s goalkeeper busy, with almost constant attack on her goal. However, Team U.S. were less than clinical and failed to...

After making $162 million at the domestic box office this weekend, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has certainly earned the world’s attention. And while that’s often translated to acclaim and admiration from audiences, the internet being what it is, that also meant the Margot Robbie-Ryan Gosling feature earned the ire of online critics — most recently and prominently, conservative U.K. news personality Piers Morgan.
One theme that many conservatives latched onto is the film’s satirical portrayal of men and American patriarchy through Ken’s journey to enlightenment. Ben Shapiro, for instance, had a nearly 45-minute takedown of the film posted to his YouTube channel on Saturday. And on Monday, Morgan weighed in with a full op-ed in the New York Post titled, “If I Made a Movie That Treated Women the Way Barbie Treats Men, Feminists Would Want Me Executed.”

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be Megan Rapinoe’s last.
The four-time World Cup veteran has had many great moments as a member of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. The Uswnt will compete for a fifth championship after claiming victory in 1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019. This year’s tournament will take place in Australia and New Zealand with the first match of group play between New Zealand and Norway kicking off July 20. The U.S. Women’s National Team roster for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has undergone significant changes since the 2019 tournament in France.
Gone are veteran standouts Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd and Ali Krieger. In their places are 14 new players named to their first World Cup roster. Among them is 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson, the team’s youngest player.
The roster for this summer’s New Zealand and Australia-set tournament features players born in three different decades and includes some with just one cap and others with well over 100. They range from Thompson to to 38-year-old Megan Rapinoe, who has announced she will retire from competitive soccer. Though not likely to start, Rapinoe will likely make her 200th appearance for Team USA, becoming the 14th player in Uswnt history to do so.
