This review contains some spoilers for "Star Trek: Beyond." It was originally published on TrekZone.org.I can safely say that J.J. Abrams stepping down from the hands-on approach was the best decision made. He's a Star Wars kind of guy and we needed a movie that appeases both the Trekkies and the casual moviegoers, and Simon Pegg delivered that in spades here. For the first time since 2009, I'm able to accept the Kelvin Timeline yes it's different and weird and unique, but Simon and fellow writer Doug Jung makes it wonderful and exactly like the original series (although you have to allow for 50 years worth of changes, like female characters that actually take charge and get the job done, and no more Technicolor wonderscapes or redresses of standing sets to save money).I had publicly said I ...

In just a week, many parts of the world will finally have a chance to see "Star Trek: Beyond" for the first time. But as what's typically done, those who review movies get to see it first. And so far, at least according to Rotten Tomatoes, critics are pretty happy with what Justin Lin, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung have put together."The young crew of the Starship Enterprise enters uncharted space to rescue a missing ship," writes Rafer Guzman of Newsday. "What they find is something unexpected an ancient and powerful force. It's called fun."While there are only a handful of reviews available as of Friday night, with likely 10 times that still out there, the early returns are positive for "Beyond." As of 9:30 p.m. Et, the movie has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 87 percent approval from critics. That ...

If you told me just 24 hours ago I would be writing a commentary right now disagreeing with George Takei, I would probably laugh you out of the room.Because I love George. Love him to death. Whenever I asked him to come on my old podcast "Alpha Waves Radio," he was there. Every single time. And he's a wonderful man, married to an equally wonderful man, Brad Altman. This morning, however, two communities I'm a part of finally merged. And I was ecstatic. "Star Trek: Beyond" was finally going to have a gay character, and it wasn't going to be some throw-away new person. Instead, "Beyond" writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung decided to take a different approach: Out one of the main characters. And Hikaru Sulu, to them, was a perfect choice. And there's two big reasons why. First, it pays homage to Takei ...

Bad Robot’s starry ensemble cast for God Particle only continues to balloon. No sooner had we brought you the news that Irishman Chris O’Dowd had joined the roster of talent in place of John Krasinski and now it’s emerging that John Ortiz and Aksel Hennie have inked deals to board the intriguing sci-fi thriller.
Indeed, Ortiz and Hennie’s additions all but cap off the casting spree, with the final casting docket also boasting Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, and Zhang Ziyi. It’s understood production is now pegged to begin on June 10 in Los Angeles.
Nigerian filmmaker Julius Onah is the one behind the camera, bringing God Particle to life via Oren Uziel and Doug Jung’s original screenplay. Though the evocative title would lead you to believe that Onah’s sophomore feature film revolves around the Higgs Boson – a subatomic particle held...

Memory Alpha has been a tremendous resource for Star Trek fans, journalists and even writers for quite a long time. Covering what it calls the canonical Star Trek universe (while Memory Beta handles non-canon), the wiki has posted entries of even the smallest minutiae in Gene Roddenberry's creation since 2003.But now it has two new very public fans "Star Trek: Beyond" writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung."We had the entirety of Star Trek history at our disposal, and it's always there online," Pegg recently told ComingSoon's Silas Lesnick. "There's an amazing (wiki) online called Memory Alpha. It became Doug's and my resource, and the place that we'd turn to whenever we wanted to know, 'What kind of weapons does an Nx vessel carry?' Memory Alpha has it."In case you're wondering, Nx ships were featured ...

Not taking its "Manhattan" cancellation lying down, Wgn America has picked up two new drama pilots - most notably an adaptation of DC Comics' "Scalped".
"Scalped" is described as a modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American Indian reservation. Lincoln Red Crow is the ambitious chief of a community who must deal with Dashiell Bad Horse who has returned home after years away from the reservation. First published in 2007, it ran for sixty issues.
Doug Jung will pen the script and executive produce alongside DC Entertainment creative director Geoff Johns.
The other series is an adaptation of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's 1971 novel "Roadside Picnic". That story explores a near-future world where aliens have come and gone, leaving humankind to explore the mysteries left behind as well as the societal ramifications of their visit.
The ation follows Red, a 'stalker' who ventures into the abandoned remains of the alien culture.

It's official - the title for the third Star Trek will be Star Trek Beyond.
That title had been heavily rumoured in the press in recent weeks, but it was director Justin Lin who officially confirmed the Beyond tagline on Twitter on Monday (June 29).

A picture of a revamped Starfleet uniform was accompanied by Lin's caption: "Let the next Starfleet voyage begin! #StarTrekBeyond #Llap."
The 'Llap' hashtage was a reference to the 'live long and prosper' mantra often spoken by Spock, who was played by the late Leonard Nimoy in the original series, and by both Zachary Quinto and Nimoy in the new films.
Little is known about the plot of Star Trek Beyond, other than that Idris Elba is reportedly succeeding Benedict Cumberbatch as its lead villain.

Looking at the design it seems to be made of heavy cotton and really nice stitchwork.
Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are writing the new film and are bringing back the entire cast, minus Nimoy; rest his soul.
Beyond opens July 8th, 2016.
As Lin, Paul Feig also tweeted his designes for the newest reboot of Ghostbusters.
The new design looks very much like the original but has, what looks to be reflective strips across the arms and chest (see below for original design)

Paramount secures the services of Kirk and Spock for a further Trek adventure following Star Trek: Beyond...
Filming has only begin in the last week or two on 13th Star Trek movie, which is believed to go by the name Star Trek: Beyond. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto once again head up the cast for that one. The film has a July 2016 release date earmarked, and will arrive in the midst of Star Trek's 50th anniversary year.

If – and despite the studio’s driving need for franchises and the evergreen nature of the title, it is still just 'if' – Paramount decides to make a Star Trek 4, it can count on Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock reporting for duty. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are remaining at the helm of the Enterprise at least through Star Trek 4.
Production on next summer's Star Trek Beyond has just kicked off, but development is already underway on the fourth instalment in the film series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount recently closed deals with Pine and Quinto that will see both stars earn substantial raises.
Pine alone is expected to make $6 million from Star Trek 4, a far cry from the $600,000 he made for the 2009 reboot.
Star Trek Beyond has director Justin Lin taking over the franchise from Jj Abrams, who is now only a producer due to his commitment to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Scripting duties this time around were handed to Doug Jung and cast member Simon Pegg, who recently revealed that he was instructed to make the screenplay 'less Star Trek-y'.

The next Star Trek film, which is reportedly set to be called Star Trek Beyond, has finally commenced photography. Simon Pegg has a real knack for saying things I agree with in a way that drives people completely insane. I've known Pegg for a little over a decade now, and I was a fan for a year or two before that thanks to "Spaced." It's been quite clear in that time that he takes genre very seriously, and that his fandom is genuine. One of the reasons "Spaced" connected to people who saw it was because it was clearly coming from people who spoke that same secret language that we all do as fans, and we could see ourselves in the characters. Edgar Wright's voice as a filmmaker builds off of the visual vocabulary of many of our genre heroes. One of the reasons I am inordinately curious about "Star Trek Beyond" is because Pegg is one of the writers of the film, meaning he's playing a key...

Those hoping "Star Trek Beyond," the upcoming third film in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise, would get back to its roots should be prepared for some disappointment.
Rather than going the "Skyfall" route of re-introducing key elements of the franchise that the rebooted franchise had avoided so far, a new interview with the film's co-writer and actor Simon Pegg has revealed that the next film will move even further away from the "Star Trek" mold than the two previous J.J. Abrams films.
Speaking with Radio Times (via The Guardian), Pegg discussed how he and fellow scribe Doug Jung were brought onboard to work on the script after the departure of original co-scribe and potential director Roberto Orci:
"They had a script for Star Trek that wasn't really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little too Star Trek-y."
Part of the problem is Marvel Studios.

Paramount Pictures’ third movie in their newly rebooted Trekkie franchise will be titled Star Trek Beyond.
According to TrekMovie, the studio recently registered the title with the Motion Picture Association of America, making it all but an imminent press release away from being officially announced.
As has been rumoured for months, the third Star Trek film is expected to see the Enterprise crew on an exploration into deep space, living up to the show’s original mantra of adventures “Where no man has gone before”.
Here’s how actor/screenwriter Simon Pegg put it to British newspaper The Guardian recently;

According to Trek Movie, the title of the next film in the sci-fi series will be Star Trek Beyond. The site admits this may not be the final title, but it was registered with the Motion Picture Association of America so it seems likely. Simon Pegg, who is co-writing the film with Doug Jung, has hinted that this instalment would take the Enterprise and her crew into uncharted territory so the title makes sense in that respect. As previously reported, Idris Elba is in talks to play the villain of the film and Pegg tells MTV that the plan is to avoid the 'Into Darkness' Khan problem and have Elba to play an original character this time out:
"It will be [an original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we're out there. We don't always have to keep bumping into the same people… So we're gonna try and reflect that in the movie."
Pegg goes on to say that the role is a "kick ass" one. He also says the hope is the new film will bring back the spirit of the show - something not really seen in the two rebooted movies outside of moments in the first film:

For a while, this interview with Simon Pegg seems to be generating straight answers. And then it doesn’t. Ultimately, the whole thing is hard to read.
Pegg was attending the Empire Awards last night, and his inquisitor, such as she is, was representing Absolute Radio. Rather than asking anything meaningful, or even trying to reconcile the Bryan Cranston and Idris Elba casting reports, she spat out one of last week’s headlines and asked Pegg if it is true.
So is Idris Elba playing a Klingon in the new Star Trek movie?
In Pegg’s words, “That’s not true.” And then he adds that there’s a “rumour” Elba has been spoken to about being in the film.
So far, this all seems like Pegg saying Elba’s in some sort of negotiations, but he won’t be playing a Klingon. And then it all goes bottoms-up and...

The upcoming third film in the current Star Trek series is chugging along, powered by the creative dilithium crystals supplied by one of the film’s stars, Simon Pegg, aka, Montgomery Scott. After a shakeup last year would see Roberto Orci, a key member of the current iteration’s creative forces bow out of the film, our new Scotty found himself in the engine room of the creative process alongside Doug Jung. So what remnants did Pegg decide to use from Orci's original script? Turns out, nothing at all. In an interview with Den of Geek, Simon Pegg takes a few moments away from promoting his role reprisal in this summer’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation to update fans on the state of the Star Trek threequel directed by Justin Lin. While Pegg has several major screenwriting credits on his CV (many of which are ...

One of the more unexpected but delightful surprises to come out of the early kerfuffle regarding production on the third "Star Trek" movie was that actor/writer Simon Pegg was taking on co-writing duties for the script.
Pegg and Doug Jung are working on the screenplay for the film which Justin Lin ("Fast Five") is slated to direct. Speaking to Spinoff Online about the film's tone, he says:
"[We] just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. And it's a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that's where we want to take it, you know.
Where no man has gone before - where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation."
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin are all on board to return for the film which will go into production shortly.

On the heels of last night's news that he's replacing Jamie Foxx in Harmony Korine's revenge thriller "The Trap," Idris Elba is said to be in early talks to play the villain in the next "Star Trek" movie (the 3rd one), according to Variety. No word yet on who this villain will be - but "Star Trek" universe experts can feel free to speculate, based on the history of the franchise. Maybe he'll be a Klingon, meaning he'll be underneath lots of makeup and prosthetics. Justin Lin is directing this 3rd film, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg (who is co-writing the script along with Doug Jung), Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Anton...

The other day we got the somewhat surprising news that Simon Pegg (Scotty) would be co-writing the third (well, technically the thirteenth) Star Trek movie with Doug Jung. MTV asked one of his co-stars in the previous films, Chris Pine, for his thoughts on that during an interview at the Sundance Film Festival, where the Into the Woods actor was joined by his Z For Zachariah castmates, Margot Robbie and Chiwetel Eljiofor. Pine seems happy that Pegg's involvement likely means a bit more humor, though he also jokes that he's worried about long "Scotty monologues". Get More: Movie Trailers, Celebrity News "What I enjoy about it is we have a laugh. We want to make sure it's embedded in there so having Simon write it is the perfect fit."...

Well what do you know, Scotty is gonna co-write the next Star Trek film with Doug Jung. This might very well be Paramount’s most inspired decision yet as far as Star Trek goes. According to Deadline Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are writing Star Trek 3, which will be directed by Justin Lin, of Fast […]

Let the "Scotty's in charge" jokes commence as Paramount has now hired on Simon Pegg to help write the script for the next Star Trek movie.
Having lost their director and then brought in Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) as a replacement, Paramount is obviously keen to get the ball moving quickly on Star Trek 3. Deadline reported last night, that to help move things along, Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the new series, has been brought on to work on the script with Doug Jung.
Pegg has writing credits under his belt in his work with Edgar Wright, so he seems like a solid choice. I'm pretty happy to hear about it as I love his work and his passion for Star Trek should make for some nice moments. Here's what gets me though...When Roberto Orci was directing the film, he was also working on the script and supposedly had it done.

It seems like things have finally settled for Star Trek 3. Last month Justin Lin (Fast and the Furious series) signed on to direct and today Simon Pegg and Doug Jung were announced as writers for the third film in the rebooted series of Trek films.
To catch you up, originally Roberto Orci was going to direct the film and co-write it with Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. Orci had co-written the previous two Star Trek films. Who knows what exactly happened but Orci ended up stepping down from the director’s chair in what would have been his directorial debut. There were rumors of script problems but Orci himself shot those rumors down. With this recent news however it's unsure if Orci and co.’s original script will end up in the final movie.
Pegg of course is known in the Star Trek franchise as playing Scotty and also...

Simon Pegg and Doug Jung have taken over scripting duties for Justin Lin's 2016 Star Trek movie...
There have already been some significant personnel shuffles on the next Star Trek film over the past month or so.
Roberto Orci had been lined up to direct the film, but he's stepped away from doing so now, with Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin instead taking on the movie.
Furthermore, Orci's screenplay also looks as if it's been set aside - at least in part - as fresh writing talent has been recruited to get the film into shape. Not that Paramount Pictures has had to look far for one of its said writers. Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the current run of Star Trek movies, is now said to be co-writing the next film along with Doug Jung.
A release date for Star Trek 3/Star Trek 13 (delete as appropriate) was announced last month too.

It's a pretty foregone conclusion that the principal cast members of the rebooted Star Trek franchise would be coming along for Star Trek 3. That includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg. But one of the crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise has a new job outside of the ship as well. Deadline reports Simon Pegg will also now be responsible for co-writing the new draft of the script with Doug Jung, the creator of the TNT police drama series "Dark Blue." Previously, Roberto Orci was going to have his hand in writing the script, but that was before he departed the film. Pegg (who will also be back as Scotty) has considerable writing experience with comedy and a variety of genres since he co-wrote Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End with director Edgar Wright, all films with considerable action and comedy.

Star Trek 3 is scheduled to be a triumphant celebration of the soon-to-be 50 year old franchise's healthy run in pop culture history. But, as anyone who's thrown a good party will tell you, such an event takes a lot of time and effort to prepare, and things can change at the blink of an eye. The folks at Bad Robot have actually been blinking quite a bit, recently replacing the initially hired Roberto Orci in the directors chair with Fast and Furious 6 director Justin Lin, but that's not all. Now we're hearing that the writer's seats are being filled by two new faces... and one of them is Scotty himself, Simon Pegg. Deadline is reporting the news that Simon Pegg has been teamed up with Bad Robot writer Doug Jung to co-write the latest draft of Star Trek 3's script. While Pegg is seen primarily as an actor in...

Jeff Bridges is set to take the lead in a story of a sizeable diamond heist....
News
One of the films being produced by Jj Abrams under his Bad Robot umbrella is Antwerp, a movie based on a Wired article by the name of 'The Untold Story Of The World's Biggest Diamond Heist'. Joshua Davis penned the article, and it's the story fo a 2003 burglary. You can probably guess where it took place.
The screenplay was originally being penned by Field Of Dreams' Phil Alden Robinson, but those duties have since been passed over to Doug Jung. Abrams will produce, but as of yet, no direct has been attached to the project.
It might just be getting its star though. The Tracking Board reports that Jeff Bridges is now in talks to take the lead role in the film, which Paramount Picture is backing. Good lead roles for Jeff Bridges?...
