The acclaimed Korean film-maker’s latest is an erotic thriller that prioritises female sexuality, and exquisite set design, to intoxicating effect
It was inaccurately thought by some, who had clearly never read a single sentence of the source novel, that Sam Taylor Johnson’s glossy adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey would be a seminal Hollywood moment for female sexuality. Hopes that it would be “bravely” thrusted to the forefront were quickly dashed, whipped and spanked once it was predictably revealed to be a film about, duh, male control.

One of the more frustrating aspects of Avengers: Age Of Ultron was the sudden and needless death of Aaron Taylor Johnson's Quicksilver. It may be disappointing for some fans to not have the X-Men under the Marvel Studios banner, but it certainly was interesting to see two different takes on the characters in Age Of Ultron and X-Men: Days Of Future Past. As it turns out, X-Men Apocalypse star Evan Peters (who plays Quicksilver in the Fox universe) was also disappointed by the decision to kill off the character. “I was devastated by it,” he said in an interview with Yahoo! Movies. “I really wanted that to keep going. I thought it was cool. I don’t really know why they killed him off. I liked what they did with it, it was different. It was a completely different take on it. He had the Russian accent. I mean,...

"X-Men: Apocalypse" producer Simon Kinberg has teased the post-credits scene of the new film, saying that the movie includes a nod not to a direct sequel so much as several potential future projects. Kinberg tells Collider:
"It's a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there's also another character that's introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie."
Whether he's referring to a hero or a villain that has yet to be tapped, such as Mr. Sinister, is unclear. In related news, Apocalypse's Evan Peters has spoken about Quicksilver and the short-lived other version of his character in Disney's "Avengers" sequel that was played by Aaron-Taylor Johnson.

The star from Everest, Zero Dark Thirty, and Terminator Genisys is in negotiations to play the late politician in Chappaquiddick.
California-based Apex Entertainment will finance the project, which is scheduled to shoot this summer under the direction of John Curran, who replaces Sam Taylor Johnson after she left to shoot the Netflix pilot, Gipsy.
Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan wrote the 2015 Black List screenplay, which follows the struggles of the then 37-year-old Kennedy the week after 28-year-old Robert Kennedy campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne died in a car accident.
Kopechne drowned when the car that Kennedy was driving went off a bridge into a tidal channel near his family’s Martha’s Vineyard estate.
According to his own testimony, Kennedy swam free and did not report the accident for nine hours.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Sam-Taylor Johnson, best known for helming the first cinematic chapter in the Fifty Shades of Grey saga, will take point for new thriller Chappaquiddick.
Setting up shop at Apex Entertainment, the drama is set to orbit around the infamous incident of ’69 that involved U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy and his young colleague, Mary Jo Kopechne. Upon visiting the titular island off the coast of Massachusetts, Kennedy accidentally sent his car careering off the road and into a nearby river, killing Kopechne. What spawned a national scandal was the fact that Kennedy fled the scene of the crash immediately, a decision that led to an irredeemable public stigma and two-month suspended jail sentence.

"Star Wars The Force Awakens" debuts in theaters in a few weeks, but Disney is already hard at work casting a young Hal Solo for their 2018 Solo prequel spinoff film. When Disney first announced they would be releasing one "Star Wars" film per year until 2020, fans wondered exactly what that would entail. Earlier this year the studio shared their plans, which included "Episode VII", "Episode VIII", "Episode IX", and three spinoff prequels that focused on the stolen death star plans in "Rogue One", Han Solo, and Boba Fett. While the Han Solo prequel spinoff doesn't have a title yet, it does have a production team, which includes screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that, according to their sources, Lord and Miller's casting director, Jeanne McCarthy ("American Crime Story", "The Mindy Project", "21 Jump Street"), has seen over 2,500 actors to play the young Han Solo.

Ever since his walk-on, one-line bit-part in a second season episode of Arrested Development, Armie Hammer has been seeking his niche. Momentum has built in fits and starts, with notable turns in The Social Network and J. Edgar particularly providing an opportunity to flex dramatic muscle. However, it is only now – with The Man From U.N.C.L.E in cinemas – that Hammer has truly come into his own, delivering a performance as a Russian agent that is utterly flawless. It is therefore unsurprising that high profile jobs are now flowing his way, and the latest is confirmed as a supporting role in Nocturnal Animals.
Written and directed by Tom Ford (A Single Man), the film will be an adaptation of the 1993 novel Tony And Susan, by Austin Wright. Nocturnal Animals is the name of the book-within-the-book, which drives the action of the story – as part-time English teacher and...

Fifty Shades of Grey was a gargantuan hit when it bowed back in February, but despite the film’s box-office success, production wasn’t easy. Apparently, director Sam Taylor Johnson and novelist E.L James clashed over the adaptation, leading to Johnson’s departure. That hasn’t deterred Universal from pounding forward though, with the studio now tagging James Foley as Johnson’s replacement for sequel Fifty Shades Darker.
Foley has an interesting track-record. He recently worked on House of Cards, but has a diverse history in features too. His biggest credits are modern classic Glengarry Glen Ross and Fear, a little-seen 1996 thriller which has a young Marky Mark going absolutely bananas.
Here’s a still from Fear for reference. It perfectly encapsulates the movie.

Given the amount of drama that reportedly went on behind the scenes of the first Fifty Shades of Grey - leading director Sam Taylor Johnson to leave the franchise - it's not a huge surprise that it's taken a minute for Universal Pictures to find a filmmaker to make the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. The project has been without a director for five months, but now it looks like the studio may have found their man: James Foley. Variety is reporting that the Glengarry Glen Ross and House of Cards director is now being considered the front-runner to direct the upcoming follow-up. At this time, an offer has not yet been sent to the director, but sources say that the studio is expected to reach out to him very soon. Should James Foley decide to take on the Fifty Shades Darker gig, he will be working from a script by...

With the success of Fifty Shades Of Grey, Universal is naturally ploughing ahead with the sequel (and, potentially, a third film shot back to back). Since Sam Taylor Johnson famously clashed with novelist E.L. James, the hunt has been on for a new director ready for Fifty Shades Darker and according to Deadline, James Foley is the top choice for the job.Foley, who has directed the likes of Fear, Glen Garry Glen Ross, After Dark, My Sweet, Perfect Stranger and Confidence, was apparently among a small group of filmmakers in contention, and has broken from the pack to become Universal’s preferred candidate. But negotiations still have to lock in a deal, and there’s some consideration whether the studio wants to make just Darker or add Fifty Shades Freed to the schedule, and keep Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in place. Which could also help them stay engaged with their characters.

Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron is raking in box office millions right now, but its ending wasn’t always set in stone…

Avengers: Age Of Ultron, then. It's a divisive chapter of the Marvel cinematic universe among critics, but nonetheless a box office behemoth which is well on its way to toppling the hefty total of the previous instalment in the superhero team-up franchise, The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble, if you rather, which you probably don’t).
Unlike most Marvel Studios films, Age Of Ultron didn’t have an end-of-credits sting (“we just didn’t have anything we loved” writer director Joss Whedon told us), but it did have a mid-credits Thanos tease and a memorable end to the film itself.

We popped along to an Avengers: Age Of Ultron press conference, where Joss Whedon and co discussed the movie, and the McU's future...
At a swanky hotel yesterday, almost all the Avengers (everyone except Chris Hemsworth) assembled for thirty minutes of chit-chat with assorted press from the UK and Europe. We chipped in with a question (looking for any clues regarding a Hulk movie), but it was sadly batted away with typical Avengers wit (Ruffalo: “shall I tell him? No, I can’t” / Whedon: “it’s too amazing”).
Thankfully, though, some interesting nuggets did come up, including an admittal from Joss Whedon that he might not yet be done with Marvel.
The question in, um, question asked if he’d be back, and what his future plans were. He responded with:
“I don’t think I’ll ever get that far away from it, because I love it so much.

We're still some time off from a sequel to Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" reboot which isn't expected to hit cinemas until 2018. Edwards himself is occupied with filming on the spin-off "Star Wars: Rogue One". When he does return to the "Godzilla" franchise though, the question is will anyone else from the first film be joining him?
Over the weekend, the first film's leading man Aaron Taylor Johnson was asked by Cinema Blend about the possibility of his coming back for the next one. From the sounds of it, he has no idea at this point:

Gareth Edward.s Godzilla is a rare beast, in this way. It made a ton of money back in 2014, and earned near-universal critical praise. But since its release, almost everyone involved in it immediately moved on to other massive projects, leaving the future of the monster-movie franchise in an uncertain state. When I sat down with Godzilla star Aaron Taylor Johnson over the weekend on behalf of The Avengers: Age of Ultron (one example of the massive properties that have tied up Team Godzilla), I snuck in a question about the status of Godzilla 2, which right now carries a June 8, 2018 release date. Hulk was such a badass in The Avengers, and I seriously can't wait to see him back in action in Avengers: Age of Ultron. We've been hearing that he's going to have a much bigger role this time around, and Mark Ruffalo confirms that in a recent interview with Total Film saying:
"[My role's] even bigger than last time, and it's more complex and it has more layers and a bit more arc. "
So we've got bigger, more complex, and more layers. These are all good things I was hoping they would do. I also hope that whatever they do in this movie leads into a standalone Hulk movie. Preferably a big screen adaptation of Planet Hulk. Ruffalo went on to talk about the motion capture work that he's doing for the film:
"I'm really tripping on the technology of this motion-capture stuff… now I just completely embrace it and see it...

With "X-Men: Days of Future Past" hitting cinemas, those who've stuck through the end credits have been met with an astonishing if frankly confusing standalone scene that hints at what's to come in "X-Men: Apocalypse".
Spoilers Ahead
Completely standalone from the rest of 'Days', the after credits 'stinger' bears most similarity to that of the one seen in "Marvel's The Avengers". Like that stinger, it's all about the introduction of an all-powerful villain - in this case the ancient mutant 'Apocalypse'.
For those who aren't seeing the film or can't find a bootleg copy on Youtube, the scene is set in ancient Egypt in a desert where a giant crowd chants 'En Sabah Nur' towards a robed figure on a hill with their arms raised.
Said robed figure, a pale Aaron Taylor Johnson-esque looking young man with blue lips and fiery eyes, appears to be rapidly assembling the pyramids using only his mind.

Thankfully the human element works very well, incorporating dramatic tension having a good balance. Although it may drag on quite a bit, I had no problem with it. Maintaining that balance throughout, had me interested with the story. Joe being obsessed about figuring out what's causing these so called disturbances among them. Of course the main thing is to keep tight and wait to see the monster of the hour right? When he does show up, it's truly breathtaking. The 350ft behemoth roars and stomps his way through to stop the winged Muto. And my goodness does the action not disappoint,...

Sixty years after Godzilla was first introduced to the world, the monster is back on the big screen. And this time, the original kaiju is bigger than ever. In the 2014 edition, size matters but so does heart. Thanks to an award-winning cast—Bryan Crantson, Ken Watanabe, and Elizabeth Olsen—the monster film is grounded in a world of reality and emotion that transforms the monster into something more than a creature of destruction. Ahead of the premiere, VH1 breaks down 10 essentials you need to know before going to see it.
It’s all about the tease
If there’s one surprising thing about the new film it’s how long fans have to wait to see Godzilla in full. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) teases the appearance of the monster before revealing it about an hour into the film. The tease plays out similarly to Jurassic Park and Super 8, both of...

“Godzilla” writer Max Borenstein and director Gareth Edwards reserved the beast for a big fight at the end, hoping to avert the failings of recent movies that have wasted their best assets early on. And in the process they angered some film critics who feel there isn't enough Godzilla. Enough with Aaron-Taylor Johnson and his dreamy blue eyes; they want massive battles between primordial beasts that dwarf their human surroundings. Borenstein defended the creative choice during a recent conversation with TheWrap, talking also the need to build more suspense in movies. “Everyone is going to have a different opinion about it,...

The days of men in rubber suits are long gone and while they may have looked as fake as some of those late night videos you might indulge in, they had absolute tonnes of personality. Audiences, for whatever reason bought into old school Godzilla and he gained a following and cult status as big as himself. But the days of the Toho studios King of the Monsters are long gone. Rubber has been replaced by computer graphics and as most people will agree, rendered monsters are hard to get right. But more importantly pulling a personality out of 355ft monster made of polygons is an incredibly difficult task. Thankfully though, Gareth Edwards and his team have pulled off a monstrous task and brought the 2014 Godzilla to life as never before. Until you witness it for yourself, words do absolutely no justice to this mammoth creation. Starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor Johnson,...

The inclusion of Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters, in X-Men: Days of Future Past was met with mixed results thanks to some pretty bad early marketing material. However, reactions to press screenings suggest that he may actually be one of the best parts of the movie. We’ve already seen little snippets of the character in action from the trailers, but 20th Century Fox has now decided to capitalize on the early buzz by highlighting his abilities in a new TV spot.
The footage opens with a monologue from Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier, but quickly shifts focus to showcase the high speed jailbreak conducted by Quicksilver. As crummy as some early stills may have looked, the character actually looks great in action, and this scene in particular looks like it could be an extremely fun sequence. Bryan Singer has directed some impressive comic book action scenes in his career...

Kick-Ass
Written by Jane Goldman and Mathew Vaughn
Directed by Matthew Vaughn
USA, 2010
As the famous saying goes: ‘And now for something completely different.’
There are some films studios love to make and one of those particular genres is the superhero/comic book movie. Another thing studios love to put into their films is plenty of action, with epic battles pitting valiant heroes against nefarious and deadly villains. A slick, polished look as well as a clever editing to heighten the experience, funny dialogue, memorable supporting characters, all of these are equally staples of what Hollywood enjoys churning out, especially when producing films based on superheroes. Most, if not all of these elements are ready and present in Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass. However, the search for financial support within the studio system proved a bit more challenging than usual, the reason being that Kick-Ass, for all its tantalizing strengths, is...

Quicksilver will make his debut in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, played by Kick-Ass star Evan Peters. Meanwhile, less than a year later, another star of that franchise will portray an alternative version of the character; Godzilla's Aaron Taylor Johnson. Both costumes take elements from the comic books, but neither are 100% faithful to the source material. Joss Whedon's take on the character keeps Quicksilver's blue costume, but unlike Singer's, his doesn't seem to have silver hair. So, taking all of this and more into account, which version do you prefer?...

Standing 24 inches tall and more than 43 inches long, the gargantuan figure is reportedly the biggest ever to hit Us stores
An over-sized toy version of the new Godzilla has offered fans the first glimpse of British film-maker Gareth Edwards's take on the iconic giant lizard.
Standing 24 inches tall and more than 43 inches long, the gargantuan figure is reportedly the biggest ever to hit Us stores. Its size appears to tally well with Edwards's big-screen Godzilla, which the director said recently was the largest ever at a staggering 350 feet high.
"The idea was to make him as big as we possibly could," said Edwards at a screening of footage from the film earlier this month in London. "We wanted him tall enough for you to be able to see him wherever you are in a city but small enough for him to be obscured at times – because otherwise it's no fun.
