You know the drill by now. Whenever there is a holiday or celebration of some sort, DC whip up a fresh helping of their 80 Page Giants. They usually consist of ten or so stories, by a mix of top name creators and some unknowns obviously given a short story assignment to bed them in gradually in readiness for greater things down the line. Story quality is usually as mixed as you would expect, some great stuff, some average, and some filler. Overall, though, you get good value for your money. So, February being Valentines, this time round we are in the mood for love….

So, you might think comic books and graphic novels are all about superheroes and have such a vast background and back-catalogue that it’s almost impossible to jump in and read them. I thought this at one point, many moons ago, unsure of how I’d be able to delve into the world of comics without being completely confused and overwhelmed with these long-existing worlds that had been established and built over decades. Believe me when I say… there’s much more to comics, and I wanted to highlight a number of graphic novels and comic books for those who might be considering getting into the scene but aren’t sure where to begin. Basically… some recommendations for new readers and those who want to check out some stuff without feeling lost, bewildered and agitated by it all.

Here is a wrap up of all the news you need to know from July 25, 2019.
We have recasts, promotions, and more!
Fox midseason drama Filthy Rich has added Steven Pasquale to its talented cast, according to Deadline.
Pasquale is taking over the role David Denman played in the pilot.
No reason has been given for the recast, but it's normal for shows to recast post-pilot as they prepare to enter production as a full-fledged series.
Related: Will & Grace Ending After 11 Seasons
Pasquale is probably best known for his role on Rescue Me, but he more recently appeared on Divorce, The Code, and Doubt.
"A southern Gothic family drama in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results," reads the official logline for Filthy Rich.
"When the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife...

Rob Guillory’s Image Comics horror series, Farmhand, is getting a show at AMC.
Farmhand is one of the more conceptually macabre printed offerings from Image Comics, the company that famously published The Walking Dead. Pertinently, it appears that the comic series, the brainchild of writer/artist Rob Guillory, is set to become the next Image-adapted series to manifest as a television show on cable network AMC.
Indeed, AMC has announced its Farmhand adaptation as one of two new serial TV projects, with the other being a split personality drama called Of Two Minds, from writer Morgan Dover-Pearl. Both shows will be written and developed by Latoya Morgan, who recently served as a writer and co-executive producer on the network’s recently-concluded post-apocalyptic martial arts series, Into the Badlands. Guillory has taken his excitement over the project to Twitter.

TV writer Latoya Morgan’s first two projects for AMC’s scripted inclusion initiative –“Farmhand” and “Of Two Minds” — are in development, the network announced Thursday.
The initiative launched last year and is overseen by Morgan, who also serves as a co-executive producer on “Into the Badlands” and has written for “The Walking Dead,” “Shameless” and “Parenthood.” She currently has a multi-year overall deal with the network. As part of the initiative, Morgan supervises and mentors emerging writers in order to infuse diverse voices into AMC’s development slate.
No dates have been set yet for either show. Additional project announcements under the initiative are to come.
“Farmhand,” from Rob Guillory, is described as following “Jedidiah Jenkins, a simple farmer, but one whose cash crop isn’t corn or soy. He grows fast-healing, plug-and-play human organs. For years, Jed’s organic transplants have brought healing to many, but deep in...

During TCA press tour, AMC unveiled that they are developing projects Farmhand and Of Two Minds as part of the AMC Scripted Inclusion Initiative. Into the Badlands writer and co-executive producer, Latoya Morgan, who oversees the initiative, will also oversee the development of the series that are part of the program which launched last year.
Farmhand is based on Rob Guillory’s graphic novel about a Southern farmer Jedidiah Jenkins. His cash crop isn’t corn or soy. He grows fast-healing, plug-and-play human organs. For years, Jed’s organic transplants have brought healing to many, but deep in the soil of the Jenkins Family Farm something sinister has taken root.
Of Two Minds from Morgan Dover-Pearl is a dark comedy about a woman trying to “have it all” who suffers a traumatic brain injury that results in a severed corpus callosum, causing her left and right brains to cease all communication.

So, there’s a world where all of the superheroes get their powers from food. It’s not actually weirder than any other superhero universe, to my mind, but it’s definitely weird in a different direction. I like that, since superheroes tend to be all too much of the same thing all the time, but I know mine is a minority taste in the vast land of ComicShopia.
(Oh, and I’m sure a lot of people — maybe even the creators — would object vociferously to my characterizing bizarre and impossible food-related abilities as “superpowers.” Those people are wrong, and probably too uptight, as well.)
Anyway, there are “food weirdos,” as one character calls them. They have long, silly, Latinate terms to explain what it is they can do, which are often dangerous or violent and are also, of course, silly. John Layman and Rob Guillory told a long, funny comics story in that world,...

Oh, look — another comics series I’m still poking my way through, a year or so after it ended! There are ten volumes of the collected Chew, so I’m three or four years behind at this point. I don’t see any particular reason to be concerned about this — not reading a book right when it comes out doesn’t harm anything, or cause a single problem — but I do seem to be doing a lot of it lately.
Anyway: Chew, Vol. 6: Space Cakes . Right smack-dab in the middle of the weird alternate-world detective story by John Layman (words) and Rob Guillory (pictures). See my reviews of volumes one and two and three-through-five (during one of my periodic reviewing bankruptcies) if you care; don’t if you don’t.

Not content with joining the Marvel TV universe via his role on upcoming Netflix series Jessica Jones, David Tennant is taking on another comic book-based role, albeit one a little more obscure. He’s taking on one of the main roles in animated adventure Chew, adapted from the Image Comics title. He joins geek icon (and Supernatural recurring veteran) Felicia Day and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun in the story, adapted from the comic by original writer John Layman, who created the title with artist Rob Guillory. David Tennant – who recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Zebediah “Purple Man” Killgrave in Jessica Jones – has just jumped aboard another comic book adaptation. According to THR, the former Doctor Who star will lend his voice to the upcoming animated adaptation of Image Comics’ Chew.
Tennant’s role – of mentor-turned-villain Mason Savoy – was originally going to be filled by Robin Williams, who tragically committed suicide last summer. His death caused a stall in production, but now things are moving forward once more. The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun and The Guild actress/creator Felicia Day are already signed on for the film and recorded their parts last year.
Chew, created by John Layman (who penned the screenplay for the adaptation) and artist Rob Guillory, centers on an agent in the Food and Drug Administration named Tony Chu (Yeun), who solves crimes by receiving psychic impressions from whatever he eats.

Some things just go together well. Peanut butter and chocolate. Fries and ketchup. Salt n Pepa. John Layman’s Chew, the hit comic about an Fda detective with food-related superpowers, and Revival, Tom Seely’s gothic noir comic set in a town where the recently dead “revived”, seems like a great match. Both are about cops working in topsy-turvy worlds, both either flirt with black humor or let black humor take them to the back seat of its Dodge. But tonally, style-wise, the two comics can seem at odds. So how do you do a crossover twixt the two that doesn’t come out like a strange melange of two opposing styles? Well…you cheat. Or at least get creative with it.

Here's something tasty for you to Chew on tonight: THR has learned an animated version of the John Layman and Rob Guillory comic Chew is in the works. Jeff Krelitz directed the animated Torchwood: Web Of Lies and Peter Panzerfaust, and he will be helming the adaptation from a script by Layman. Chew is a very funny, but also occasionally dark comic set in a world where bird meat is illegal after millions of people die from a deadly bird flu. Haven't read Chew? Check out the...

Chew , the upcoming animated feature adaptation of the acclaimed Image Comics series by John Layman and Rob Guillory, has cast two of its leads! The Hollywood Reporter brings word that "The Walking Dead" star Steven Yeun will voice the eponymous and homonymic Detective Tony Chu with Felicia Day ("The Guild") providing the voice of food critic and love interest Amelia Mintz. The series, which launched in 2009, is officially described as follows: Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he.s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn.t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He.s been brought on by...

Image recently announced a Chew/Revival crossover, which is… well… hard to picture until you view the promotional art for the covers, one of which is drawn Rob Guillory-style, the other rendered by Mike Norton. Revival is a “rural noir” about the dead coming back to life; Chew is an ongoing fan favorite about a cibopathic (read: gets psychic visions from food) named Tony Chu. Seeing these two seemingly disparate properties on the same cover is quite a trip.
I’m game to see how the plot plays out. Something tells me it’s going to involve corpse-chewing.
Idw has been doing similar things recently, culminating in this week’s trade release of Mars Attacks Judge Dredd (so far the Martians have attacked Transformers, Popeye, and Kiss, among other properties). Last year they bashed together the heads of Star Trek and Doctor Who in Assimilation.

By far the biggest news story this week was the return of Peter Park… nope, it was Doop getting his own series! Yup, the Slimer-esque X-Man who most recently appeared in Jason Aaron’s Wolverine and the X-Men series as a background gag, has gotten so popular that he’s now getting his own five issue limited series! Doop’s creators, Peter Milligan and Mike Allred will be writing and drawing the covers while David Lafuente will be the interior artist. All-New Doop #1 is out this April.
But yes, of course the big news was that Peter Parker was returning to the Marvel Universe this Spring with All-New Amazing Spider-Man #1! The classic flagship Marvel character was killed off before Marvel Now! first launched and his nemesis, Doc Ock, took over his body to become the Superior Spider-Man. Superior has been controversial with fans upset at the change in the status quo,...

Being an artist is a lot like being a stripper. No matter how lofty your goals, you have to catch someone’s attention before they stuff a dollar in your panties, and the comic book equivalent to a thong is a tantalizing cover. But just as a provocative outfit might obscure a more transcendent beauty, often cool-but-cheap covers make a hero look a tiny bit sad.
It’s hardly a new issue, with it being traced back as far as the 1950s, when covers became a lot more involved. Keep in mind that the first appearance of Superman was just him lifting a car – and that’s it.
During the ’50s, however, artists started incorporating eye–catching features such as wacky plots, sensationalist slogans, and gimmicks that would later give rise to the embossed covers and scratch-and-sniff (seriously) monstrosities that have followed since.
Later, 60s and 70s comic...
