Apple is delaying the theatrical release of “The Banker,” originally set for Dec. 6 with assistance from Bleecker Street, insiders familiar with the company said.
It’s being delayed as the filmmakers review accusations of historical inaccuracy and sexual abuse at the hands of co-producer Bernard Garrett Jr. The film was also set to premiere on Apple TV Plus in January, which is also being postponed due to the theatrical release’s delay.
“The Banker” is the story of Garrett Jr.’s father, portrayed by Anthony Mackie in the film. Apple announced on Nov. 20 that it had canceled a planned gala screening of “The Banker,” one of the tech company’s flagship original films that was meant to close AFI Fest on Nov. 21 at the Tcl Chinese Theatre Hollywood. Netflix stepped in and screened Noah Baumbach’s acclaimed “Marriage Story” in its place.

Apple TV+ movie The Banker reunites Avengers actors Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie, joined by Nicholas Hoult, for a fact-based drama.

AFI Fest has set the world premiere of Apple’s The Banker, starring Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult and Nia Long, as its closing-night film on November 21 at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Here’s the logline for director George Nolfi’s film: Based on a true story, The Banker centers on revolutionary businessmen Bernard Garrett (Mackie) and Joe Morris (Jackson), who devise an audacious and risky plan to take on the racist establishment of the 1960s by helping other African Americans pursue the American dream. Along with Garret’s wife Eunice (Long), they train a working class white man, Matt Steiner (Hoult), to pose as the rich and privileged face of their burgeoning real estate and banking empire – while Garrett and Morris pose as a janitor and a chauffeur. Their success ultimately draws the attention of the federal government, which threatens everything the four have built.

“‘The Banker’ joins a remarkable group of films being released this year that openly confront centuries of racism and injustice in our country, while celebrating the brave individuals whose activism has created real change,” AFI Fest director Michael Lumpkin said.

Apple is adding the historic Jim Crow-era drama “The Banker” to its Apple TV+ slate, further beefing up its planned original streaming offerings likely for theatrical release and awards consideration.
Per usual, the tech giant is tight-lipped about its plans for the George Nolfi-helmed film. An Apple spokeswoman confirmed the company is still planning to launch its streaming service in the fall, but declined to say when this or other high-profile films on its slate would be released.
Starring Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Nia Long, and Nicholas Hoult, “The Banker” is based on the true story of two African American entrepreneurs who seek to thwart the racial limitations of the 1950s.

[Editor’s note: This post contains major spoilers for “Kin.”]
When Jonathan and Josh Baker’s feature-length debut, the imaginative sci-fi thriller “Kin,” unspools its final ten minutes, it comes packed with some genuine surprises. It’s not just that the film’s finale adds a new dimension to the story that has preceded it or that it opens up the possibility for a film franchise, but it’s who makes both of those things possible. It’s all thanks to a surprise cameo from one of Hollywood’s hottest actors, a star who doesn’t just appear in the film, but also executive produced it, totally in secret.
“This is a secret we’re trying to keep until opening weekend, and it’s already been real tough to do it,” Jonathan Baker told IndieWire in a recent interview.
Even fans of the film’s initial inspiration — the 2014 short film “Bag Man,” which the brothers wrote and directed — will likely be surprised by what happens.

A strained fraternal bond lies at the heart of “Kin,” a high-octane thriller of a road movie with more bark than bite. Eli (Myles Truitt) is a highly capable teen (he can floor a pickup truck into a tight donut and blast a mysterious raygun without batting an eye), but he’s a little too sweet and innocent to really lay into his older brother, Jimmy (Jack Reynor), deserving as he may be. The film opens with Eli’s discovery of the otherworldly weapon in an abandoned warehouse in Detroit, where he lives with his adopted father, Hal (Dennis Quaid).
Eli’s mother died when he was young, and though Hal isn’t the most effusive of fathers, he manages to cough out something about loving Eli as his own flesh and blood. Hal’s actual flesh and blood is a real disappointment; recently out of jail, Jimmy is indebted...

Chicago – The concept of “family” has been romanticized to death in the movies in the last generation, coinciding with the increasing decline of actual togetherness. The new film “Kin” is essentially about family, but it also is about otherworldly weaponry, gritty crime lords and the old on-the-road story.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Newcomers Josh and Jonathan Baker – twin brother filmmakers – focused on the family dynamic of three males from Detroit, who without their dead wife/mother seems destined for dereliction, even with the influence of a honorable working class Dad. The twist is that the youngest son – an adopted African African boy in a white family – has discovered a weapon, not of this earth, that only he can discharge. Newcomers Josh and Jonathan Baker – twin brother filmmakers – focused on the family dynamic of three males from Detroit, who without their dead wife/mother seems destined for dereliction, even with the influence of a honorable working class Dad. When his older brother and he hit the road, there are many factions out to get them, but the weapon itself becomes a saving grace. Kin is a crime drama about two brothers on the run from a dangerous man, an intimate story of how family transcends blood. But there’s also a sci-fi gun in the mix. Summing up the feature debut of directors Jonathan Baker and Josh Baker is a bit tough. It’s a science fiction movie where the […]

Chicago – The tagline for the new film “Kin” is “No force is stronger than family,” and who would know that better than a couple of twin brother filmmakers. Josh and Jonathan Baker make their feature film debut with this gritty sci-fi action picture, and create a new direction and style for the genre.
“Kin” features Jimmy (Jack Reynor) and Eli (Myles Truitt) as brothers, and Dennis Quaid as their Dad in a Detroit working class family, whose fortunes are swayed by Jimmy’s ex-con status… he owes a gangland leader (James Franco) a large debt. In the meantime, Eli – the family’s adopted African American sibling – makes a discovery while pilfering wire from a closed Detroit factory. It is a strange kind of weapon, that works only in his hands. When Jimmy tries a robbery to settle his debt, he and Eli must go on the run, with the weapon in tow.

Becoming Iconic
One thing one learns very quickly as a film journalist is that it's impossible to please everybody. One's first duty has to be to the truth as one sees it; then to the readers; then to the wider industry. With this in mind, it's impossible to go back and change reviews if filmmakers are unhappy about them. But we strive to be fair, so when Inconceivable director Jonathan Baker got in touch to say he was unhappy about my review of Becoming Iconic, a film about filmmaking, his career and the people who inspired him, I offered him the chance to talk about it and put his side of the story. I began by asking him how the project began.
"Warren Beatty was a friend of mine, a mentor, and I would use him as a sounding board," he says. "He would give me such crazy answers all the.

"I want you to be careful around him." Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for a badass new sci-fi action film titled Kin, from filmmaker brothers Jonathan Baker & Josh Baker. You may recognize this because it's a feature-length version of their short film Bag Man, which we featured here back in 2014 when it first debuted. Kin is about an ex-con and his adopted brother who go on the run with a deadly, awesome, futuristic weapon. Jack Reynor and Myles Truitt star, and the film's impressive full cast includes Carrie Coon, James Franco, Zoë Kravitz, Dennis Quaid, and Romano Orzari. This footage looks great and I'm so down for this. I'm also very happy to see another sci-fi short we wrote about previously turned into a movie that looks so cool, it's always an exciting success story in the movie biz. Fire up the first trailer below. Here's the first...

It’s lucky 13 for the fun and fabulous Coney Island Film Festival! That’s right, 2013 will see the 13th annual edition of this New York City staple that combines the fine art of filmmaking with the rambunctious art of sideshow performing on Sept. 20-22.
The fest opens on the 20th with the documentary More Than the Rainbow, a profile of Matt Weber, an NYC cab driver who moonlights as an art photographer. The film is directed by Dan Wechsler.
Other docs screening at the fest include the uplifting tale of A Clown’s Recovery, directed by Matthew Broomfield; the sports drama of One Wall: Kings of Coney Island, directed by Joe Glickman; the profile of a Coney Island legend in The Commander in Chief, directed by Jim McDonnell; the struggle of Bending Steel, directed by Dave Carroll; and World Circus, directed by Angela Snow.
But, there are also fiction films in the mix,...
