Melissa Calusinski, the daycare worker convicted in 2011 of the first-degree murder of a 16-month-old boy, was denied a new trial Friday by an Illinois judge. Judge Daniel Shanes said there was no new evidence presented in the case, saying Calusinski's request for a new trial was an attempt to retry existing evidence. Calusinski's attorneys will appeal the ruling with the state appellate court, Calusinski's father, Paul Calusinski, has told People. On Jan. 14, 2009, Benjamin Kingan was found unresponsive in his bouncy chair at the Minee-Subee daycare in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Foam and blood were coming out of his nose. Just an hour later,...

“Dead of Summer” is a campy new horror, mystery series that debuts on Freeform this June 28. Created by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz and Ian B. Goldberg, the story follows a group of camp counselors who stumble into a small town filled with demon worshippers and disgruntled ghosts.
Variety’s TV critic Sonia Saraiya writes, “The teen horror series is loaded with clichés, but with enough popcorn, it might make for a fun summer fling.” She notes that the first episode is “astonishingly bad” and includes “bland protagonist Amy.” “At the very least, while escaping the dog days of summer inside with the air-conditioning, there’s plenty of fun to be had in laughing at how bad it is,” she concludes.

As if any Geordie ever needed confirmation, it’s now official that Newcastle is the happiest city in Britain. According to a study by the European Commission (who apparently have nothing better to do), 56% of Newcastle residents are “very satisfied” with their lives, and 84% happiest with their financial situation. If that’s not cause for celebration, I don’t know what is.

Whether you leave the region or not, it pulls you back irresistibly, the call of Local Hero and Busker dragging your heart back across the river into its homeland. It’s impossible...

“No good deed goes unpunished.” Unless of course your good deed was waiting patiently for The Green Inferno to find distribution. I cannot tell you how excited I was to attend a screening last week and I was more than ready for possibly more gore than my stomach could handle.
In the film, Lorenza Izzo plays wide-eyed college freshman Justine, the daughter of a U.N. Ambassador and a young woman trying to find her place among international issues, protests, and hunger strikes. While roommate Kaycee (Sky Ferreira) is hip to the Bs surrounding the campus’ humanitarian group, Justine feels drawn to it. After being “shamed” at a group meeting for making a joke—shame being a common tool used among slacktivists—Justine can’t help but demand to participate in the group’s trip to the Peruvian jungle to protest the de-forestation and possible extermination of a local tribe.

"We're getting married at the end of the summer," said Purdy, 35. "We've been together for close to 13 years … so by the time we both decided we're on the same page, let's do this, we thought, 'Why wait any longer? Let's do this. We know we want to do this.'"
Purdy is bronze medalist and double amputee.

The Television Critics Association announced its list of annual award nominees Tuesday, honoring repeat contenders like AMC’s Breaking Bad, HBO’s Game of Thrones and CBS’s The Good Wife.
Yet it’s the inclusion of HBO’s True Detective that’s the major headline-making presence here. Everybody expects the acclaimed, noir-soaked drama series to swamp awards season, and these nominations are the first indication the show could do just that. True Detective is nominated for outstanding actor (Matthew McConaughey), miniseries (though the show submitted in the drama category for the Emmys), outstanding new program, and the TCA Awards’ top category,...

Well done, “Elizabeth” and “Phillip” — you’ve played the part of average American citizens well enough to help your FX drama snag three Television Critics Association Awards nominations.
You might want to call the Kgb for reinforcements, though — The Americans will face stiff competition from the likes of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and The Walking Dead, all of which are also up for Program of the Year. AMC’s drug drama, which begins its final run of episodes Aug. 11, also won three nominations overall — in the same three categories as The Americans.
This year’s TCA Awards will be presented Aug.

The Amazing Race mantra is often "never give up," but three teams didn't get the memo on the Season 22 premiere. After hours of searching through 400 sandcastles for a clue to no avail, newlyweds Max and Katie, country singers Caroline and Jennifer, and firefighters Matt and Daniel agreed to quit the Roadblock and take a four-hour penalty so they could move on to the next task and start on even ground to stay in the Race. Unfortunately for the firefighters, it was a bad call, as the next task was to row to the Pit Stop in a tiny Bora Bora canoe called a va'a that could not handle their weight. "The other teams probably didn't weight 100 pounds with both of them in it," Daniel tells TVGuide.com. "It was 600 pounds between me and Matt and a French guy [in the boat with us]." Still, the two insist that they don't regret throwing in the towel.

The Amazing Race Review, Season 22, Episode 1
“Business in the Front, Party in the Back”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Each new premiere of The Amazing Race brings its own share of excitement and questions. Will the cast have exciting characters? Will the challenges stand apart from the standard formula? Will the producers offer new twists that change the game? All three of these boxes haven’t been checked as often in recent seasons. There have been thrilling challenges and standout players, yet the results have been inconsistent. This new group is filled with lively teams that have their own unique stories, but the challenges dominate the opener. A brutal Roadblock pushes three pairs to take a four-hour penalty and choose a dangerous boat race to the Pit Stop. While the risk pays off for two of them, it sends firefighters Matthew and Daniel right to elimination. The well-meaning...

Amazing Race 22 Preview
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Premieres February 17
Can The Amazing Race still be surprising? With the long-running reality competition entering its 22nd season, the chance for major changes seems unlikely. There will be unpredictable moments, but the overall structure remains the same. The producers have tried to throw in new twists to liven up the game, but they’re one-time events that rarely make a dent. For example, last season upped the ante to $2 million, but only for the team that won the opening leg. Once Abbie and Ryan left the game, that move disappeared from memory.
Even without structural changes, there’s still plenty to like with this show. It’s consistently entertaining and sends its 11 teams through difficult challenges all over the world. The set-up is so good that it’s impossible not to wish for the best from every season. So much...

Teams have made it all the way to the end of "The Amazing Race" only to have their million dollar prize yanked from their hands by less-than-intrepid cab drivers, so maybe we shouldn't feel too sorry for Amy Purdy and Daniel Gale. The Amazing Race Review, Season 21, Episode 2
“Long Hair, Don’t Care”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When it comes to analyzing episodes of The Amazing Race, it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish between poor game design and an undesirable result. The producers are blamed when they make it too easy for a likable team, but they face criticism when bad luck dooms that pair. It’s true that a bad taxi driver is the reason for Amy and Daniel’s surprise exit. However, plenty of other teams did locate the destination, so the task isn’t unfairly challenging. Chance has been a part of the game since the first season and has doomed plenty of capable teams. The ones who survive this type of obstacle are quick to recognize the situation early before it’s too late. Their fate also offers a clear reminder of how important luck is to this competition.

A familiar foe struck again on The Amazing Race: bad taxi luck. After leaving the Roadblock in second place, snowboarders Amy and Daniel spent the rest of the leg aimlessly driving around Indonesia — in three cabs — putting them dead last. "We were crossing our fingers and hoping it was a non-elimination round," Amy, the show's first double-amputee Racer, tells TVGuide.com. "We couldn't lose all hope until we actually got to the mat and heard what Phil had to say." How long did were they lost for? And do they regret telling Abbie and Ryan the clue in the first leg? Find out below!

In an Amazing Race shocker, power couple Amy Purdy and Daniel Gale from Summit County, Colorado, were eliminated in only the second leg of the race. Despite Amy's double-amputee status, the pair had quickly set themselves apart as a team to beat in the first episode, but were ultimately taken down by a commonly named auto shop and a string of hapless cab drivers. ETonline talks with the pair to get their take on their elimination and to find out if this "on-again, off-again couple" is together or apart.
