The 2024 Tribeca Festival has added 11 new feature films to its lineup — including a Hannah Einbinder standup special from Max — and has also set a world premiere of Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One on June 26 in partnership with Paramount Pictures and Imax just ahead of the film’s theatrical release. The red carpet event is for Tribeca members as part of the organization’s push into year-round programming. It’s after the festival, which runs June 5-16.

Other new word premieres include sports documentaries Federer: Twelve Final Days, directed by Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia — a behind-the-scenes film of the 20-time Grand Slam tennis champion Roger Federer and his emotional decision to retire from the sport — as well as Power of the Dream,...

There comes a moment in many sports documentaries when viewers find themselves wondering whether they’ve drunk the Gatorade. All the fast cuts and swelling music, the bodily injuries and emotional agony, the triumphant moments and podium tears have a way of pushing our buttons.
In director Sarah Dowland’s “Sue Bird: In the Clutch,” that objectivity-questioning pause comes when the WNBA legend’s agent appears for an on-camera interview (she happens to be one of its executive producers as well). No arguing that agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas knows a great deal about Bird and even more about the changes in marketing strategies that women athletes have faced over the years. She also knows that optics matter, and it’s hard not to be a little frustrated that such an obviously biased cheerleader should appear as a source. (Another red flag: NBA Entertainment had a role in producing the doc.

The phrase in the clutch represents an ability to pull off something crucial during an important moment, widely used in the world of sports. These words can be applied to any Hail Mary football pass, any home run while the bases are loaded, or a three-point buzzer beater; it’s the latter with which athletes like Sue Bird are acutely familiar and can be seen several times over the course of “Sue Bird: In The Clutch, “ an aptly named documentary telling the story of one of the finest players the WNBA has ever seen.

When basketball legend Sue Bird decided to let a team of filmmakers capture her final season after playing 21 years in the WNBA, she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from watching her career be contextualized on film, but it turned out to be wonderful.
“You play such a long time — so many different moments, so many different memories — and to have it now, in this one film is amazing,” Bird said, visiting the Variety Studio presented by Audible at the Sundance Film Festival. “I think the hardest part throughout the process was showing those emotional moments.”
When she was on her own, the emotions flowed freely. “I’d be crying like a baby, like in the shower,” Bird admitted, laughing. “But then the minute I was in front of the cameras or in front of the crowd, the emotions didn’t always come,” she said, turning to the filmmakers seated alongside her.

Given the current dismal political and cultural climate as well as streaming services’ massive appetite for celebrity driven content, it comes as no surprise that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival is chock full of portrait documentaries. Frida Kahlo, Christopher Reeve, Luther Vandross and Tammy Faye are just a few of the boldface names that are being examined in various docus featured in the Sundance nonfiction lineup.
The festival is no stranger to star-driven docus. World-renowned athletes Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe have launched A Touch More, a new production company that centers the stories of revolutionaries who “move culture forward.”
Bird, a five-time Olympic gold medalist and basketball legend, and Rapinoe, a two-time FIFA World Cup-winning soccer superstar, created the company to “bring a touch more understanding, connection, entertainment, and conversation to the evolving media landscape” by amplifying narratives around identity, activism and underrepresented communities, including LGBTQ people, Poc and women.
Famous for their game-changing abilities both on and off the playing field, the pair of star athletes and engaged couple are all too aware of the status quo in sports, which is why they’re fighting to shake things up. Throughout their careers — Bird recently retired after a stellar 21-year WNBA career while Rapinoe is playing toward her third World Cup appearance — the athletes have championed for more visibility and pay for women.

Your bracket picks may be final, but the games you watch can always change. As March Madness continues to captivate sports fans across the country, some have recognized that the men's basketball teams receive more coverage, especially in primetime. If you ask Sue Bird, viewers should also be open to watching and cheering on the women's tournament.
