Facebook Watch’s newest series “Queen America” takes place in the often controversial world of pageantry, and star Catherine Zeta-Jones is clearly aware of its potential ups and downs.
“Yes, there is a preconceived idea of what the pageant world is,” said Zeta-Jones said at the Variety sponsored world premiere of “Queen America.”
“I started as a tap dancer, so I understand the idea of what it means to better yourself and further yourself and what it takes for women who come from one place to get to somewhere else,” Zeta-Jones added.
Set in Tulsa, Okla., the series follows Zeta-Jones’ character Vicki Ellis — a famously tough pageant coach whose mission in life is to shape young women into winning pageant queens — and her young protégé Samantha. The 10-episode series seeks to point out not only the flaws and humor of the pageant world, but also the ways in which it...

Here’s a quick question that should serve as a surreal gut-check for modern entertainment: How many episodes of “Queen America,” the latest serialized offering for Facebook’s 2 billion-plus users, are available now?
Figure it out? Did you have to quickly Google “Queen America Facebook” or scan Catherine Zeta-Jones’ IMDb page first? Odds are high outside research was required, given that three episodes of “Queen America” quietly dropped Monday on Facebook Watch, marking the latest attempt by the streaming giant to stand out in the market for streaming options.
Created by Meaghan Oppenheimer (co-writer on the under-appreciated 2015 Zac Efron DJ picture “We Are Your Friends”), “Queen America” is one of those half-hour shows billed as a “black comedy” but that’s really just a drama with a few caustic jokes. In the pilot, Zeta-Jones’ popular beauty pageant coach tears up an Australian contest judge, dropping belittling joke after belittling joke...

The migration of movie stars to television has resulted in some series that seem divinely ordained — from Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in “Big Little Lies” to Billy Bob Thornton and Kirsten Dunst on “Fargo” — and others that feel significantly more random. “Queen America,” which forces an Oscar winner to tamp down all that’s best about her persona, is one of the latter cases. Catherine Zeta-Jones is a gifted star whose aura of outsizedness already feels difficult to contain on television — or, for that matter, on Facebook Watch, the finding-its-feet platform on which she appears on “Queen America.” In the series, a black comedy (or is it a drama with occasional jokes?) about the desperate hangers-on in the beauty pageant scene, Zeta-Jones feels constrained by the show’s sensibility and its sour lack of ambition. That she fights as hard as she can to avoid being sucked into the...

It’s been a rough year for beauty pageant stories. “Queen America,” the latest entry in the growing Facebook Watch original programming library, at least has Catherine Zeta-Jones to help guide it through.
The latest trailer for the series shows Zeta-Jones playing Oklahoma pageant whisperer Vicki Jones, who’s tasked with helping shape an unpredictable aspiring contestant Samantha (Belle Shouse) into a winner. Putting her reputation on the line, it seems like Vicki will learn plenty of lessons about image, self-worth, and good heartland values along the way.
Samantha is Vicki’s main project, but plenty of other people will enter her orbit over the course of the 10-episode season, set to premiere later this month on Facebook Watch. This trailer is a little vague who’ll be watching from the sidelines, and who’s exactly enthusiastic about having Vicki around in the first place, but there’s also the...

Cast: Julie Benz, Danielle Harris, Fionnula Flanagan, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn and Belle Shouse. Havenhurst is a horror film from director Andrew C. Erin (Sam's Lake, 2006) and writer Daniel Farrands. The film also stars a few horror film veterans, including: Danielle Harris (Hatchet II, 2010), Julie Benz (Saw V, 2008) and Jennifer Blanc-Biehn. All of the cast and crew come together in a terrifying title, which brings serial killer H.H. Holmes back to life. The film asks: what if H.H. Holmes continued killing in modern times? The eviscerated corpses will answer this question. Meanwhile, the film's moral compass is a bit broken. Almost all of the characters are motivated by vice, while another is just incompetent. Still, Havenhurst invites you into a tenement, which is full...

When "Secrets and Lies" premiered on ABC in March, Sepinwall and I talked about it on the podcast, but nobody wrote a full review. What I said in my Take Me To The Pilots entry and what I said on the podcast is what I'd have said in my review: In a year of close-ended shows using the death of a child as a catalyst for an investigation or an investigation of grief, "Secrets and Lies" was the most tawdry and sensationalistic, the one most prone to insulting the intelligence of viewers. Two months later, same as it ever was, "Secrets and Lies" ended its first season with a seemingly anti-climactic scene and then instructed viewers to go watch one extra scene either online or on some stupid ap or... Screw that. Season 1 of "Secrets and Lies" ended with a slightly ominous car scene between Abby and Christy. Full-stop. I...

Tomorrow night marks the season conclusion of Secrets and Lies and hopefully we'll finally learn the truth -- who's responsible for the death of young Tom Murphy? After that, the biggest question on the minds of fans of this show may be, "Is Secrets and Lies going to be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled by ABC?"

ABC has been promoting Secrets and Lies as a "10-episode drama". Presumably that means that the series won't be cancelled before the storyline concludes but anything can happen if the ratings are bad enough. If it's a hit, could there be a second season? We'll have to wait and see how things go.

Some Us critics responded enthusiastically to the Us remake of Hoodlum.s Secrets & Lies but the bulk of viewers may need convincing. The 10-part thriller starring Ryan Phillippe, Juliette Lewis, KaDee Strickland, Aussie Indiana Evans and Belle Shouse premiered on the ABC network at 9 pm Sunday Us time. The two-hour show averaged a 1.5 rating/4 share of the key 18-49 demo, equating to 5.9 million viewers, finishing second behind the debut of post-apocalyptic comedy The Last Man on Earth on Fox. Us commentators rated the figures as unimpressive although they noted Secrets & Lies did far better than the January premieres of Resurrection (1.1) and Revenge (0.9) in the same timeslot. Also, encouragingly for the network and the producers, the thriller held its audience, averaging a 1.5 rating for each of the four half-hours. Variety reviewer Brian Lowry opined, .Better than Gracepoint and not as compelling as Broadchurch, ABC.s Secrets and Lies is a solid,...

ABC‘s Secrets & Lies gives away the main thrust of the story with the gimmick itself, leaving the ten-episode dramatic effort to keep viewers interested with… well, all the secrets and lies. The trick here being that some of them aren’t actually either.
Similar to such popular, recent efforts as Broadchurch (Gracepoint), this is another reworking of a foreign show. This one, like The Slap, an effort from Australia.
The show opens with Ben Crawford (Ryan Phillippe) sprinting out of the woods to get help after he finds the body of a small boy, Tom Murphy. Tom was not just his neighbor’s son, but a boy Ben knew well, as his daughter regularly babysat him.
As might be expected (from TV DramaLand), Detective Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis) asks Ben a lot of questions that don’t exactly sound routine, and more or less acts as though she has...
