There's a killer on the loose, and they're totally rocking the '80s. Like, seriously!
Amazon Prime Video's newest slasher, Totally Killer, is a sci-fi horror-comedy that takes what we love of the '80s and mixes it with a time travel twist. Think of it like a mix of Happy Death Day and Scream but in a B-movie VHS tape.
Compared to those two slashers having a solid point of view, Totally Killer was just another slasher on the block. It was a bloody, fun ride, albeit a messy one with its B-horror movie characters and inconsistent plot.
Totally Killer captures the exaggerated tone of the '80s, especially in campy horror flicks. Plenty of big hair, big colors, and bigger personalities make up the world.
But what helps the movie stand out is the self-aware nature of Jamie Hughes (played by Kiernan Shipka of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina...

If you mixed Back to the Future and Halloween, or if The Final Girls had involved traveling in time instead of into a movie, the results might be something like Totally Killer. It’s a time traveling spoof of slasher movies from Blumhouse who already visited this territory with Happy Death Day and its sequel.
The fact it was from Blumhouse was just one of the reasons I debated watching Totally Killer. It was directed by Nahnatchka Khan who is best known for Always Be My Maybe and Young Rock and had no genre experience. Similarly, the three writers David Matalon, Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Married) and Jen D’Angelo were lacking in that regard as well. But since it...

Nahnatchka Khan’s Totally Killer is an entertaining riff on John Carpenter’s Halloween by way of Robert Zemeckis’s Back to the Future. It might not be quite as incisive a piece of genre dismemberment as Wes Craven’s Scream or Drew Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods, but it has a lot of fun poking at the tricks and tropes of slasher movies all the same.
Totally Killer begins in a small suburban town where a masked murderer known as The Sweet Sixteen Killer gruesomely slayed three teenage girls on Halloween night in 1987. Fast-forward to the present and the one that got away, Pam (Julie Bowen), still fears that one day the killer will return for her or, worse, for her 16-year-old daughter, Jamie (Kiernan Shipka). It turns out that Pam is paranoid but not paranoid enough, as the masked man reappears on Halloween night while Pam is...

We just can’t get over the 80s. And with killer music, killer movies, and killer… killers – why would we? Totally Killer, directed by Nahnatchka Khan, catapults us right back into that beloved decade. It’s a time-traveling adventure that takes us on a wild ride from the present day back to the neon-soaked, cassette-playing era of the 1980s. With a blend of suspense, comedy, and a generous dose of nostalgia, the film offers a fresh and funny take on the slasher genre, adding a fun whodunit twist that’ll keep you guessing ’till 2023.

Plot: In 1987, a slasher known as the Sweet Sixteen Killer claimed the lives of three 16-year-old girls. When the killer returns in modern day, a young woman figures out a way to travel back to ‘87… where she hopes to stop the killing before it ever began.
Review: Working with director Christopher Landon, Blumhouse Productions has brought us a few really fun slasher-with-a-twist horror comedies in recent years: the time loop slasher Happy Death Day (and its sequel) and the body swap slasher Freaky. Landon wasn’t involved with their new release Totally Killer, but the movie really feels like a companion piece to those Landon projects – and if you enjoyed Happy Death Day and Freaky, chances are that you’ll like Totally Killer as well.
The high concept gimmick in this one is time travel. The story begins on Halloween night 2023 in the small town of Vernon, which is still...

The time travel slasher comedy Totally Killer is scheduled to begin streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 6th, but today, one week out from the release, the marketing department has unveiled a clip from the film that I would have deemed too much of a Spoiler to show off. But showing it off they are, so I have embedded it above. This scene shows the masked murderer know as the Sweet 16 Killer crossing paths with Liana Liberato from Scream VI, but if you don’t want to know how that encounter turns out, avert your eyes.

Horror-slasher-comedy film ‘Totally Killer’ has just released its new poster, and its devilishly diabolical in the very same vein as ‘American Psycho’ mixed with ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Halloween’, though with more of a comedic twist, paying tribute to 1980’s slasher films.
The official synopsis of the film reads: “35 years after the shocking murder of three teens, the infamous ‘Sweet Sixteen Killer’ returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. 17-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) ignores her overprotective mom’s (Julie Bowen) warning and comes face to face with the masked maniac and on the run for her life, accidentally time travels back to 1987, the year of the original killings.”
“Forced to navigate the unfamiliar and outrageous culture of the 1980s, Jamie teams up with her teen mom (Olivia Holt) to take down the killer once and for all before she’s stuck in the past forever”, it further mentions.

Nahnatchka Khan’s feature hails from Amazon Studios and Blumhouse Television, and it hits Prime Video exclusively on Oct. 6. The movie centers on Jamie (Shipka), who goes out on Halloween night despite her protective mother’s (Julie Bowen) warnings and finds herself attacked by the infamous killer who murdered her mom’s friends years ago. It'll be screening at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival this fall, before heading straight to streaming online - not in theaters. When the infamous "Sweet Sixteen Killer" returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie accidentally travels back to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can start. It is "the must-see slasher-comedy film of spooky season," their press release says. Time-travel to the 1980s and experience culture shock through Jamie's eyes. Starring Kiernan Shipka as Jamie, as well as Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro, Troy L. Johnson, Liana Liberato, Kelcey Mawema, Stephi Chin-Salvo, Anna Diaz, Ella Choi, with Randall Park and Julie Bowen.

Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is zapped back to 1987 and the weird fashion choices that come with dipping your toes in the late ’80s in the trailer for Prime Video and Blumhouse’s Totally Killer. Joining Kiernan Shipka in the R-rated comedy are Julie Bowen, Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, and Liana Liberato. The cast also includes Kelcey Mawema, Stephi Chin-Salvo, Anna Diaz, Ella Choi, Jeremy Monn-Djasgnar, Nathaniel Appiah, Jonathan Potts, and Randall Park.

It's tough to imagine a more challenging job these days than to come up with an original, high-concept movie involving time travel. For one thing, the industry is pretty much drowning in scripts relying on this tried-and-true gimmick, making it that much more difficult to separate oneself from the rest of the pack. For another, any project will be doomed from the start with comparisons to all-time classics like "Back to the Future," "Groundhog Day," and more. So what's a filmmaker to do? The trailer for the upcoming Prime Video and Blumhouse movie, "Totally Killer," suggests one possible approach: embrace the high expectations, fully lean into the self-aware humor, and go as far as the clever script and killer cast will take you.
In what can only be described as "Back to the Future" meets "The Final Girls" with a pinch of "Happy Death Day," the premise of "Totally Killer...

The once-and-future pop queen Debbie Gibson goes for a classic Seventies disco trip in her excellent new video for “Love Don’t Care.” It’s part of a triumphant musical rebirth for the “Electric Youth” legend, getting her mirrorball groove on with a very Cher flamboyance. “Love Don’t Care” is a dance banger from her 2021 comeback album, The Body Remembers, with a wide-open inclusive spirit. It’s a message that love isn’t restricted by boundaries of gender, age, race, or sexuality. It’s also proof that Debbie’s electric youth is timeless.

The film stars Michaela Watkins, who also serves as an executive producer on the film and Charlie Gillespie (The Rest of Us) who plays the titular character’s daughter’s ex-boyfriend.
“This is a movie about rediscovery, loneliness, codependency, self-worth, and transitions,” said writer-directors Stewart and Clark.
levelFILM’s Dave Hudakoc and John Bain added: “Linsey and Dane have imbued this charming odd couple with authenticity and vulnerability. Michaela and Charlie are the perfect people to breathe life into these complicated characters.

Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to a pair of coming-of-age dramas: writer-director Alana Waksman’s debut feature We Burn Like This, and writer-director Anna Matz’s first feature, Love You Anyway. The digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group plans to release both titles across internet and satellite platforms on June 28.
Inspired by true events, the former film from Armian Pictures shows the inherited effects of historical trauma and the strength of survival and healing. When 22-year-old Rae (Madeleine Coghlan), a descendant of Holocaust survivors, is targeted by Neo-Nazis in Billings, Montana, her ancestors’ trauma becomes real. As antisemitism continues to rise in the community, we follow Rae on her journey to forgive herself, her mother and the broken world. We Burn Like This also stars Reservation Dogs‘ Devery Jacobs, as well as Kendra Mylnechuk, Angelo Rizzo, Casidee Riley and Megan Folsom.

Amazon Prime Video and Blumhouse Television are teaming up for a new slasher-comedy starring Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen and Randall Park.
“Totally Killer” follows Shipka’s Jamie, whose mom Pam (Bowen) is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer — a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema), she travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the teen version of her mom (Holt) to try and stop the killer.
“We thought this genre mash-up of slasher/comedy with a twist of time travel was just so fun, and Nahnatchka Khan is perfect to direct,” said Chris McCumber, president of Blumhouse Television.
Jen D’Angelo is penning the screenplay based on an original script by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver. Production begins Thursday in Vancouver.

Kenny Ortega confirmed there are no immediate plans for Julie and the Phantoms to return to Netflix or anywhere else at this time, but the series executive producer teases, “never say never.”
Created by Dan Cross and David Hoge, the musical dramedy tells the story of a young Latina (Madison Reyes) who leads a band of literal phantoms. The series won three Primetime Emmy Awards for the show’s first and only season.
The cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms was announced in December, more than a year after its debut.
“At this particular time, no,” Ortega told Deadline on Friday about whether the show is being shopped elsewhere. “I’m grateful to Netflix for greenlighting the project and for letting Dan, Dave, and I have this time. I feel it’s some of the best work I’ve done for kids and family,...

The reason behind Netflix's cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms is as mysterious as the show's well-dressed villain.
Why cancel a show with an audience score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and nearly a million loyal followers on Instagram?
"Fantoms," as the most devoted fans call themselves, are baffled and heartbroken.
From renowned director Kenny Ortega, Julie and the Phantoms follows 15-year-old Julie Molina (Madison Reyes) a year after her mother's death. When she puts on one of her mom's old CDs, she unwittingly releases the three striking members of the band Sunset Curve.
The kicker: they're all dead.
To convince you why Julie and the Phantoms deserves a second season, let's start with why its first season attracted so many to their screens.
There would be no Julie and the Phantoms without, well, Julie and her phantoms. The bond between the titular characters is the show's beating heart.

Chicago – In a Covid-free world no doubt this list would be a Top 20 or 25 … in non-pandemic times, I photographed approximately 150 celebrities per year. In 2020, there were only two, before the global pandemic basically put my career – like that of so many others – into a medically induced coma.
The year 2021 brought a slow and sloggy return as most Hollywood folk preferred to promote their wares from the safety and comfort of their own homes, rather than playing a real life “Squid Game” of dodge the variants on Red Carpets or in making personal appearances. Red light!…Green light!…Red light! And who could blame them? Good for them but bad for me. But as of yet I still haven’t been eliminated and hope springs eternal that I may survive upcoming rounds. That being said, I present to you my Top 10 Celebrity Portraits of 2021 and the stories behind the shots. As per every year,...
