The release and distribution will be handled by Hero Partners in partnership with Howling Wolf Films, with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment distributing across transactional home entertainment.
Neil Bogart saw the rise and fall of Casablanca Records, which in its heyday from the mid-to-late 1970s was a powerhouse in the disco sphere with artists such as Donna Summer, pop bands like The Village People and hard rock with Kiss. Damon Wolf, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s chief marketing officer, is exiting his role at the studio, according to a memo Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake sent to staff on Friday.
Wolf also announced his own departure in a note obtained by TheWrap. Both letters explain that he and Drake had been in conversations over the past year about him moving on to his next chapter but that he remained on through the studio’s re-imagining process and through the pandemic.
No replacement has been named for his position.
Wolf joined Lionsgate in June 2018 after working at TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions. Wolf in his role led marketing campaigns for Lionsgate’s “Knives Out,” “Bombshell” and the “John Wick” franchise, among others.
Lionsgate last December restructured its film group under four new verticals, including strategy and innovation, marketing, distribution and content, with Wolf assigned to lead the marketing vertical.

Damon Wolf, the head of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group worldwide marketing, is exiting his role. The news was just revealed by group chairman Joe Drake in a note to staff. There’s no word on a replacement.
Wolf was hired in as head of worldwide marketing in June 2018, moving over from an EVP role at TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions. In that role he helped spearhead successful campaigns for Lionsgate’s John Wick franchise as well as the Oscar pushes for the studio’s Knives Out and Bombshell among other big hits.
In December 2020, Wolf was tapped as one of leaders of Drake’s revamped film division’s alignment into four key verticals: Marketing, Distribution, Strategy and Innovation, and Content. With that designation, he added to his global marketing and communications oversight to include all platforms and digital content releases along with theatrical and digital releases through the home entertainment window.

Lionsgate said Friday that it has finalized a reorganization of its Motion Picture Group, with chairman Joe Drake aligning the division into four key verticals — Marketing, Distribution, Strategy and Innovation, and Content — and setting the executives to oversee each.
The newly solidified teams will oversee each project throughout its evolution and lifecycle from development or acquisition to release, downstream and library ancillaries.
With the revamp, Jen Hollingsworth will remain as the group’s COO and expand her oversight to lead Strategy and Innovation team. Ron Schwartz, who as been president of Worldwide Home Entertainment since 2014, will expand his role to lead Worldwide Distribution for all Mpg content. Damon Wolf will grow his Global Marketing and Communications oversight to include all platforms and digital content releases along with theatrical and digital releases through the home entertainment window.
Drake will continue to lead the Content vertical. Nathan Kahane (Production), Jason Constantine (Global Acquisitions) and Jenefer Brown continue in their roles.
“Since returning to Lionsgate three years ago, my focus and mandate has been reimagining the Motion Picture Group as a place for Artists to thrive,” Drake said in a release announcing the move. Strengthening our company for the realities of a rapidly shifting marketplace has been priority one. That transformation began well before this year, but the pandemic has accelerated these changes and spurred us to adapt and enhance our flexibility. It was essential that we rebuild our operations with a forward-thinking lens. We have the best executive team in the business and we’re collaborating with the best storytellers in the world. I am confident our Motion Picture Group will meet the the unique challenges of the industry today with the innovation, creativity, resolve and resilience that I know is the hallmark characteristic of every Lionsgate employee I am privileged to work with.”
The restructure had been the in works since May, well before the Global Motion Picture Group had to cut 15% of its workforce ahead of it quarterly earnings call last month. They followed layoffs in marketing and distribution in March soon after cinemas closed around the world because of the pandemic.
“Through these changes, our core business remains the same: we are premium content creators and providers working with the world’s best artists who want to see their films presented on the big screen. Lionsgate remains committed to the theatrical experience. Equally, we are also in the unique position to be able to quickly serve consumers changing viewing habits during this time where innovation and flexibility must be embraced. Optionality and consumer preference are critical as fans seek entertainment where they want and how they want and these factors must be our true north star,” Drake said today. “By streamlining and consolidating our operations, we are taking full advantage of our assets, staff, library, and our portfolio, so we are more competitive today, tomorrow, and into the future.”
Lionsgate most recently shifted again the release date for its YA sci-fi adventure Chaos Walking, which will now be released in theaters nationwide and in Imax on March 5 — from its previous January 22 date. Next up for the studio is today’s theatrical and Premium VOD release of Fatale, the the Deon Taylor-directed psychological thriller starring Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy.
During the quarter that ended in November Lionsgate’s motion picture revenues fell to $257 million from $405 million due to theatre closings. That was partially offset by the performance of titles in the PVOD market and digital home entertainment. Segment profit, however, surged 63% to $83 million on strong demand for library content and lower distribution and marketing costs.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, in comments on that earnings call, said the feature film business “saw a massive imbalance between content supply and demand” and the studio responded by greenlighting eight films since May.
Last year, Lionsgate saw three movies open to No. 1 including John Wick: Chapter 3, Angel Has Fallen and Midway, and it also saw some profitable hits in Knives Out and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. It has had to retrench in 2020 because of Covid-19 restrictions.

Lionsgate has pushed back “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” to 2021, and Keanu Reeves’ “John Wick: Chapter 4” to 2022 as part a massive revamp its upcoming slate.
The studio announced Friday that it has also set its “Saw” reboot “Spiral,” starring Chris Rock and Jackson for May, 21, 2021 — a full year after its original opening date. It had already that it had re-scheduled horror film “Antebellum,” starring Janelle Monae, for Aug. 21.
“John Wick: Chapter 4” will open more than a year its original opening date of May 21, 2021 — a date that Lionsgate announced last year in the wake to the strong opening of “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.” The fourth iteration of the Reeves’ franchise will now open on May 27, 2022, over Memorial Day Weekend.
“The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” has also been moved back a year. The sequel had originally been set to open this summer on Aug, 28, 2020, and will now debut on Aug. 28, 2021. The film stars Ryan Reynolds,...

Lionsgate has confirmed the release of “John Wick: Chapter 4” is being pushed a year from May 2021 to May 27, 2022. The next installment in the Keanu Reeves-starring action franchise was announced not long after “John Wick: Chapter 3” opened in May 2019 to over $50 million at the domestic box office. The move makes logistical sense, considering that Reeves still has to finish production on “The Matrix 4.” The Warner Bros. tentpole was several weeks into filming when production was halted. “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski said this week he was more or less expecting a new release date for “Chapter 4.”
“‘The Matrix’ was only four weeks in when this all happened,” Stahelski said. “So, Keanu’s gotta go finish his commitment up on ‘The Matrix,’ which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our...

Liongate’s hopes for 2019 rest largely on shoulders of “Hellboy,” John Wick and the two unlikely lovers of “Long Shot.”
Last year was the studio’s worst year at the box office since 2011. It pulled in just $389 million in 2018, according to Box Office Mojo.
But Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told investors in February that three upcoming films — “Hellboy,” “Long Shot” and “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” will be a “return to form” for the company’s motion picture business. Last year’s disappointments included “Robin Hood,” which pulled in $30.8 million domestically, “The Spy Who Dumped Me” ($33.6 million) and “The Commuter” ($36.3 million).

There’s a shakeup in Disney’s marketing ranks.
As part of the overhaul, longtime studio marketing chief Ricky Strauss has been named president, content and marketing, for the upcoming Disney Svod service, a Netflix rival that is set to launch in late 2019. He will be replaced as marketing president by Asad Ayaz.
The moves had been rumored for some time, particularly after Ayaz was approached for and turned down top executive jobs at Fox and Paramount. The official announcement was made after a Thursday morning meeting on the studio lot. By promoting both men, Disney is able to keep two of the most widely coveted executives on its Burbank lot and, more importantly, out of the leadership suites of its rivals.
In his new role, Strauss will oversee the development of the service’s original programming and will manage production partnerships and acquisitions. The hope is to offer a...

The ongoing restructuring at Lionsgate continued Tuesday as the studio announced that Damon Wolf would be the new head of worldwide marketing for its motion picture division starting next year. He replaces Tim Palen, who will stay on as the studio’s chief brand officer and will work with Wolf on the transition.
Wolf comes to Lionsgate after four years at Sony, where he was co-head of marketing for TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Acquisitions. Among the films he built marketing campaigns for are the Edgar Wright action film “Baby Driver,” Ridley Scott’s Oscar-nominated “All The Money In The World,” and Danny Boyle’s “T2: Trainspotting.”
Wolf’s hire comes five weeks after Good Universe co-founder Nathan Kahane was named the new president of Lionsgate, joining longtime collaborator and new studio chairman Joe Drake as the replacement for longtime studio chiefs Erik Feig and Patrick Wachsberger.

Damon Wolf has been named head of worldwide marketing for Lionsgate’s motion picture group.
It’s a surprising hire in some respects. Wolf, currently an Evp of marketing at TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, has a low profile in the industry. He replaces Tim Palen, considered to be a giant in the movie business and a creative genius. His hire is part of a wider house-cleaning at the studio behind “The Hunger Games.” Joe Drake has been putting his imprint on the film division since taking the reins as motion picture chairman last winter.
Drake replaced veteran Lionsgate executives Erik Feig and Patrick Wachsberger in February. Both men are leaving to start their own companies, but that shake-up raised eyebrows across the industry because they were exiting after a string of successes. Under Feig and Wachsberger, Lionsgate released the likes of “La La Land,” “Wonder,...
