Fresh from its world premiere at the Sun Valley Film Festival, Bastards of Soul expanded its fanbase at an exclusive screening event and Q&a at SoHo House in Austin on March 13.
The packed screening was followed by an emotional chat among director-producer Paul Levatino and his directors of photography Jeremy Word and Zack Tzourtzouklis, the latter of whom also served as editor on the film.
Sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter contributing editor Stacey Wilson Hunt, the trio revealed how a short film about the popular Dallas soul/R&b group Bastards of Soul became an accidental tribute to its charismatic lead singer.
“I was thinking we were going to create a five- to 10-minute piece about the making of their new album,” said Levatino. “What happened next was heartbreaking … but there was a moment after I found out [about Chadwick Murray’s passing] that I knew I had to make [a feature].”

Mike Judge and his Office Space cast reunited at South by Southwest Film & TV Festival for a panel discussion March 9 sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter about the beloved and influential film — a title that arguably reinvented the workplace comedy for the modern age and popularized the concept of quiet quitting. While the panel discussion tackled several intriguing aspects about the film’s creation and reception (some highlights below), Judge revealed a few extra tidbits at the post-panel reception at Austin’s The Statesman restaurant.
Asked if there was anything he would change about the film (which was famously difficult to get made, with the writer-director fending off a blizzard of studio executive Tps reports, er, notes), Judge offhandedly noted he hasn’t seen his film since before it was released in 1999. Everybody in earshot of this (including star Ron Livingston) looked surprised, given the film initially flopped at the box...

“It’s a little early for comedy,” “Hacks” co-creator Jen Statsky told the audience at South by Southwest on Saturday, March 9. In her defense, it was noon, but to counter — it’s never too early for “Hacks.”
The Emmy-winning HBO comedy created by Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs has been away for two years, one of many shows proving the aphorism “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” as production delays in Hollywood kept it from its adoring fans. Those fans packed Austin’s Paramount theater on Saturday to cheer and cackle and give a standing ovation to star Jean Smart — one of the only SXSW premieres dealing not solely in hype and hope, but with a dedicated audience who know and love the series.

In front of a very enthusiastic audience of more than 600 fans, students and SAG-AFTRA members, actor Matt Bomer shared an unvarnished take on the heartache, hurdles and proudest moments he’s experienced in his 20-year film and television career.
Bomer appeared at the annual TV festival in Atlanta to accept The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award – presented to him by current Scad acting student Eric Ackerman – for his contributions to storytelling. Bomer was specifically honored for his amplification of Lgtbq+ stories and characters in projects such as HBO’s The Normal Heart, Netflix’s 2024 Oscar contender Maestro and Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, to name just a few.
The award was created in 2023 to acknowledge artists whose work, often without fanfare, reflects a commitment to telling stories previously marginalized by Hollywood. Recent honorees have included David Oyelowo, Niecy Nash and Eva Longoria.

A decade after his breakthrough role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s Selma, David Oyelowo says he is heartened by the long-overdue shift toward a more culturally diverse marketplace for onscreen storytelling.
As part of NATPE 2024’s official programming, Oyelowo appeared onstage in front of a lively crowd of 150 guests at the InterContinental Miami to discuss his wide-ranging career as an actor, director and producer before receiving The Hollywood Reporter’s “Trailblazer Award” — a commendation given to Hollywood creatives whose work reflects a commitment to amplifying marginalized creators and stories.
“Streaming has really democratized things and the generational impact is seismic,” said Oyelowo, who joins recent THR Trailblazer honorees America Ferrera, Eva Longoria and Niecy Nash-Betts in receiving the award. “I know what marginalization looks like. I know how stories can break down prejudices. I feel it deeply because I’ve experienced it.”

Latinx creatives gathered around sopes and mezcal at Cantina Frida in Beverly Hills on Monday afternoon for a conversation around community and representation in Hollywood.
“The fact that this room exists now is so enormous,” said writer and producer Gloria Calderón Kellett, who created the Prime Video series With Love. “We’ve got to talk about the trauma and we’ve got to talk about the wins. This room did not exist when I started where we could come together and just gather and celebrate, so give yourselves a round of applause.”

“My life changed when Rachel Brosnahan walked into it. I will never be the same.”
That’s how The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino closed a farewell letter distributed on Tuesday in advance of the upcoming launch of the fifth and final season of her Emmy Award-winning Prime Video series on April 14. Later that day, Sherman-Palladino joined Maisel collaborator and husband, Daniel Palladino, and castmembers for a special PaleyFest event at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet, Sherman-Palladino took a minute to remember that moment.
“We were reading so many people and then Jeanie Bacharach, who helped cast the pilot, said there was a girl who had nothing on her résumé that would lead you to believe she could do this — she had done no comedy whatsoever,” Sherman-Palladino explained. “But Jeanie said, ‘I just feel it in my guts that Rachel Brosnahan can do this.

The cast of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” celebrated their final season on the closing night of PaleyFest Tuesday – but not before lightly ribbing the ensemble of “Yellowstone” for ditching their scheduled festival appearance last-minute.
The Emmy-winning Prime Video comedy series starring Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein was celebrated with a closing night screening and Q&a, marking the last event of the 40th William S. Paley Television Festival at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. After screening a sizzle reel of the beloved Prime Video show, several members of the cast and the creative duo behind the comedy — creator, writer, director and EP Amy Sherman-Palladino and writer, director and EP Daniel Palladino — appeared onstage for the Q&a, moderated by Stacey Wilson Hunt of The Hollywood Reporter.

Some will hail the new “Little Women” a masterpiece, and others will prefer the beloved 1994 version. But fans were finally given the chance to see the film when it screened for journalists and Academy and guild members Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The audience was aglow over Greta Gerwig’s modern-feeling adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 coming-of-age classic.
The writer/director infuses the ensemble period piece with a contemporary sensibility that will usher this much-tread literary landmark into the hearts and minds of a new generation — and will resonate with awards voters as “Little Women” approaches its Christmas Day release from Sony.
After the screening at the Directors Guild of America theater, Gerwig was joined by her cast for a Q&a, including Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, and Laura Dern. Moderator Stacey Wilson Hunt introduced the night’s conversation by sharing “Little Women” producer Amy Pascal...

“This Is Us” has won three Emmys so far, all for acting and all for dudes. But this could be the year for a female star to prevail — and not one of its regulars.
Phylicia Rashad is in third place in our Best Drama Guest Actress odds for her performance as Carol, the mother of Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), in the Beth-centric hour “Our Little Island Girl.” Two Experts are forecasting a victory for Rashad, Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly) and Stacey Wilson Hunt (Gold Derby), as are two of our Editors, Daniel Montgomery and Chris Beachum.
Rashad is the only female “This Is Us” star to have any predictions to win and is the one with the best overall odds as well. Watson is the only other “This Is Us” actress predicted to get a bid, in supporting, but she’s in sixth place in our odds and isn’t...

Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts have spoken, and they believe that “Game of Thrones” will win Best Drama Series for the fourth time at the upcoming ceremony. A whopping 21 of these 24 Experts from major media outlets have the HBO fantasy epic in their #1 positions, but what about the other three? Well, Nikki Novak (Fandango) and Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes) both believe that BBC America’s cat-and-mouse crime thriller “Killing Eve” will prevail, while Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine) goes out on a limb for “Pose,” FX’s series about the Lgbt community’s ballroom culture in the 1980s.

Remember just three months ago when “Escape at Dannemora” was the overwhelming favorite to win Best Limited Series at the Emmys? Well, not anymore. The Showtime series is still slightly out front in our combined odds, but our pundits are as split as ever, as all five predicted nominees have backers. Not just that, but “Dannemora” and “When They See Us” have divided a majority of our Experts down the middle.
“Dannemora” and When They See Us” each have eight Experts seeing gold for it. Chris Harnick (E!), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Jen Chaney (Vulture), Ed Martin (Media Village), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Ben Travers (IndieWire), Kelly Lawler (USA Today) and Anne Thompson (IndieWire) are predicting “Dannemora” to win. Directed by Ben Stiller, the show was the big winner with the guilds and the Golden Globes earlier this year, so it’s definitely the safest choice to go with.

The stranglehold that “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” has held on Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie has been released, with a new front-runner emerging in the form of “Deadwood: The Movie.” As more and more of our Emmy Experts watched HBO’s reunion telefilm, which was released on the final day of Emmy eligibility, it continued to creep up our winner’s chart. As of this writing, “Deadwood” now officially tops our combined predictions with leading 7/2 odds to win Best TV Movie, just ahead of the 37/10 odds for Netflix’s interactive entry “Bandersnatch.”

If Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are correct, then we can expect “Veep” to win its fourth (and final) trophy this year as Best Comedy Series. HBO’s political satire prevailed in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but it was not eligible for Emmys in 2018 as it took that year off due to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ cancer treatment. Now 19 of our 24 Emmyologists from major media outlets believe that “Veep” will have the last laugh yet again. Amazon’s period dramedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which took advantage of “Veep’s” absence last year and ran off with the top trophy, is the favorite to upset the front-runner by four of our Experts. But there’s also a dark horse in HBO’s hitman-turned-actor comedy “Barry,” which has the support of one Expert.

HBO‘s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” is the three-time defending champion for Best Variety Talk Series at the Emmys, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s guaranteed to four-peat this year. While it is indeed the front-runner again according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, several of the Expert journalists from top media outlets we’ve polled think “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will overtake him this time. Easier said than done?
When it comes to talk shows at the Emmys, it’s tough to stop a winning streak once it gets started. “The Late Show with David Letterman” won Best Variety Series five times in a row (1998-2002). Immediately after that “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” won 10 times in a row (2003-2012). Can Ron Cephas Jones do what his “This Is Us” co-star Gerald McRaney couldn’t? Two of our Emmy Experts think so.
Jones, the reigning Best Drama Guest Actor champ, is back in the same race this year for the NBC tearjerker and is in second place in our odds behind Bradley Whitford (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). But our Experts Stacey Wilson Hunt (Gold Derby) and Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) are seeing a repeat victory for the actor, which would make him the first to win the category twice for the same role.
McRaney, who won Best Drama Guest Actor in 2017 for “This Is Us,” was nearly the first last year when he was shortlisted again for his performance as the beloved Dr. K, but he was foiled by none other than Jones. McRaney himself prevented Hank Azaria from scoring two straight wins for “Ray Donovan” in 2017.

As you may recall, three years ago Peter MacNicol earned an Emmy nomination in Best Comedy Guest Actor that was later rescinded after Gold Derby discovered that the “Veep” actor was actually ineligible due to appearing in too many episodes. MacNicol was replaced by Peter Scolari (“Girls”) on the Emmy ballot, who against all odds wound up winning. Flash-forward to this year and MacNicol is now a front-runner to prevail for his role as political strategist Jeff Kane, screeching uncle of Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), according to our Experts from major media outlets.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” took a while a catch on at the Emmys, but it dominated in 2018, winning five times out of eight nominations including Best Competition Program, where it defeated the three-time defending champ, “The Voice.” Now we think it’ll win again. “Saturday Night Live” is on a hot streak in the Emmy race for Best Comedy Guest Actress, winning three in a row for Tiffany Haddish (2018), Melissa McCarthy (2017) and Tina Fey & Amy Poehler (2016). However, our Experts from major media outlets predict an upset in the category this year for Emmy fave Jane Lynch for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” This TV veteran was nominated last year for her complicated role of 1950s gimmick comic Sophie Lennon, ultimately losing to Haddish on Emmy night. Will Lynch get the last laugh this time around?

Chris Messina has put together an impressive list of TV credits over the last 20 years, but he hasn’t been nominated for an Emmy. Could that change this year with his supporting role in the HBO limited series “Sharp Objects”? A couple of the Expert journalists we’ve polled think he will.
