The Amityville Horror (1979)
The Movie Says: A family moves into a home that had been the site of a grisly mass murder, and soon realize the house is incredibly haunted. The movie is based on the bestselling 'non-fiction' book.
In Real Life: After the previous inhabitants of a certain Amityville house were murdered, the Lutz family moved in – though they were worried about making the mortgage payments on the $80,000 home (just under half a million dollars today).
The idea of writing a book about the house being 'haunted' post-murder was actually proposed by the killer's lawyer, who thought it would make a pile of cash.
Long story short: the book got published and sold 11 million copies, the Lutzes got rich off of their lie, and nobody else who lived in the house ever experienced paranormal activity. So 'The Amityville Horror' isn't based on a true story so much...

Brian Cox probably didn’t even have to engage the whole power of his acting talent in his recently ended black comedy drama show Succession — his character’s boldness and straightforward manner of speaking the truth seem to be a part of the actor’s personality too.
While nobody would find a safe place to hide from Cox’s harsh criticism towards actors and films at HistFest a couple of weeks ago, it wasn’t only Joaquin Phoenix’s Napoleon that got all the heat, but also Mel Gibson’s biggest achievement in the industry.
A proud Scottish man, Brian Cox is definitely into historical accuracy — and he won’t tolerate it when this accuracy isn’t 100%. At the same HistFest the actor revealed that he’s definitely not a fan of Braveheart, Mel Gibson’s 1995 directorial and acting feature that took home five Academy awards, including for Best Picture.

From sharing repugnance towards Wbd’s handling of Turner Classic Movies to blasting Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Napoleon, Brian Cox has never bothered filtering his opinions. Recently, while sharing his distaste for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, the Succession star stressed that Phoenix was terrible in the role, claiming he’d done a better job as France’s first emperor.
However, his criticisms weren’t limited to Scott’s historical epic, as the actor also took shots at one of Mel Gibson’s most acclaimed works to date, which scored five Oscar wins, including Best Picture.

True to form, actor Brian Cox doesn’t hold back when critiquing Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. He doesn’t have much time for Braveheart, either.
Seldom one to mince his words, Brian Cox has offered an unfiltered review of Ridley Scott’s 2023 historical epic, Napoleon. The film was, the Succession actor said, “Terrible.”
Nor did Cox have much time for Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as the title figure. It was “a truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix,” he added.
Cox made the comments in a talk hosted by Clive Myrie called History on Stage and Screen. It was part of HistFest, an event held at the British Library earlier in April; during it, Cox waded in not only on Napoleon’s historical accuracy, but also the quality of the film as a piece of drama.

Brian Cox is giving his take on Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and pondering on leaving the U.S. if Donald Trump wins the presidential election.
In a new interview, Cox blasted Phoenix for his interpretation of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, calling it a “terrible performance.”
“Terrible. It’s terrible. A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix,” Cox said at the HistFest in London, according to the Evening Standard. “It really is appalling. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s totally his fault and I don’t think Ridley Scott helps him. I would have played it a lot better than Joaquin Phoenix, I tell you that. You can say it’s good drama. No – it’s lies.”
The Succession star then went on to joke about Phoenix’s name, adding, “I think he’s well named. Joaquin…whackeen… whacky.

American Fiction outperformed expectations by landing three nominations, including best ensemble, while the edgy May December and Saltburn and a trio of non-English-language contenders — Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest — were completely shut out, and Killers of the Flower Moon’s Leonardo DiCaprio was passed over, when SAG-AFTRA announced the nominees for its 2024 SAG Awards on Wednesday morning.
Does any of this matter for those with Oscar nominations on their mind?
SAG Awards film nominations are determined by the vote of a nominating committee comprising 2,500 randomly selected members of the roughly 160,000-member guild. As a result, SAG Award nominees tend to be more populist but less international than the eventual selections of the actors branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (whose own nomination voting will begin Thursday and runs through next Tuesday).

Embarking on an Epic Journey with Braveheart The sweeping landscapes and the thunderous charge of battle in Braveheart have left an indelible mark on medieval cinema. Mel Gibson’s portrayal of William Wallace, a man who became the symbol of Scotland’s fight for independence, is both rousing and poignant. The film’s narrative might take liberties with historical facts, but its emotional resonance and epic storytelling are undeniable. “They may take away our lives but they’ll never take our freedom,” is a line that echoes through time, encapsulating the spirit of resistance that Wallace represents. While it’s true that Braveheart has faced...

Desperation often leads to violence when someone’s back is against the wall. Humans are animals, and when cornered, they’ll lash out, throwing caution to the win as part of a fight or flight response. In Lionsgate‘s Desperation Road trailer, a mother protects herself against a corrupted officer of the law, leading to gunfire, bewilderment, and a snap decision to flee the scene. Mistakes can catch up to the best of us, and secrets unravel easily when the past comes back to haunt you.
“In a small Mississippi town, justice and the law are two very different things,” reads the official synopsis for Desperation Road. “Academy Award Winner Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald star in a modern noir thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Farris Smith about two lost souls tortured by the mistakes of their past and bound by a secret that keeps them running.

Ryan Gosling is still giving off Kenergy vibes.
For Greta Gerwig’s 40th birthday, Gosling decided to give her the best Ken-inspired gift he could: a flash mob that sang a mashup of the most popular songs from her new hit film Barbie. He gathered a large group of Barbies and Kens to perform a dance number for the director.
The flash mob surprised Gerwig at her Pilates class and began with a bunch of Kens dancing to Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” and a group of Barbies later joining to perform Dua Lipa’s song “Dance the Night.” They ended the performance by yelling “Happy Birthday Greta!”
Gerwig can be seen in the background of the video holding her face in her hands and crying from joy as she hugged all the performers.
She commented, “That was so beautiful. Who are you?” To which everybody laughed.

At 61 years old, Tom Cruise is doing more to defy the stigmas of aging than any cosmetic guru or exorbitantly expensive cream on the market. In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise makes being a sexagenarian look like a walk in the park. Always putting fans first, Cruise goes above and beyond to bring cutting-edge action to screens with death-defying feats of physical prowess and bravery in the face of danger. He would have it no other way, which is why it’s strange that, 20 years ago, Paramount thought he was getting too old to play Ethan Hunt.

Joaquin Phoenix is Napoleon Bonaparte. We admit it’s a bit of a strange idea given the absolute lack of je ne sais quoi energy (or French accent) that comes to mind when you think of the American actor. Nevertheless, in the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon biopic, there is something undeniably intriguing about the performance, not least of which because this is a chance to see Phoenix work with Scott again in a sprawling historical context.
Indeed, the first and last time the pair collaborated was Gladiator, the film that won Scott a Best Picture Oscar and garnered Phoenix a supporting actor nomination. In that film, Phoenix played another tyrant, too, albeit a less ambiguous one (there are no grand monuments to Commodus in Rome like there is for Napoleon in Paris!). Yet the more interesting point of contrast might be how much the film industry has...

Now 101 Films has given the film a digital, VOD, and DVD release, and you can check it out at This Link! All was not well with Sylvester Stallone’s career in the summer of 1995. Judge Dredd had come out, and, despite blockbuster business overseas, the film flopped in the all-important North American market. It would kick off a dry spell in Sly’s career, with many of his follow-up movies also doing poorly, to the point that in the early 2000s, he was stuck doing low-rent movies that went direct to video, such as Shade and Avenging Angelo. Of course, a major comeback for the Italian Stallion was just around the corner. Still, in this episode of Stallone Revisited, we look back at his follow-up to Judge Dredd, Assassins, which, on paper, should have been one of Sly’s classics but has gone on to become something of an obscure, underrated outing on his CV.

Whether you want the inside skinny on Logan Roy, Hannibal Lecktor, Winston Churchill or King Lear, the mighty Scottish actor will be here to tell all
Brian Cox needs no introduction – other than the usual one establishing which Brian Cox we’re talking about. This one is the 76-year-old Dundee-born actor, who started his career as a classically trained Shakespearean thespian, who played opposite Laurence Olivier in King Lear in 1983. His performances in Rob Roy and Braveheart shot him into the mainstream. Roles soon followed in The Long Kiss Goodnight and Super Troopers. Turns out Treadstone was all his fault in 2002’s The Bourne Identity. And if he’d been a bit nicer to the apes in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, perhaps they wouldn’t have taken over the world. Silly Brian.
Cox can still boast he was the original Dr Hannibal Lecter (or Lecktor), in Michael Mann...

Margot Robbie used an episode of This American Life and unpacked society’s historical sexualization of a doll that “doesn’t have reproductive organs” to help her get into character for the upcoming Barbie movie.
The film’s star and producer speaks to Vogue, alongside several other members of the Barbie creative team and cast, about preparing to play the iconic Mattel doll. While going behind the scenes of the film’s concept to completion, Robbie opens up about how she navigated getting into the character of Barbie.
Robbie, who says she “really didn’t even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project,” points to actress Gal Gadot — who was unavailable to star in the project — as a sort of human personification of the character. “Gal Gadot is Barbie energy,” the actress-producer says. “Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful,...

A generation may see Brian Cox only as Logan Roy, the patriarch of "Succession," but there's a lot more to the Scottish actor than HBO's hit black comedy. Cox is established not just in television but on stage and in film, where he's worked with directors such as Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Michael Mann, Spike Lee, and Spike Jonze.
Cox's venerable reign at the top of Hollywood's B-list -- on his way to the A-list -- has been truly workmanlike, encompassing some 240-plus acting credits (via IMDb). In 2001, Cox won an Emmy for his performance as Hermann Göring in the TV movie "Nuremberg." Two years later, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him Commander of the British Empire, and then, in 2007, the UK Film Council recognized Cox as among the top 10 most powerful British actors in Hollywood (via PBS).

Intro: After the success of Lethal Weapon 3, it was a given there would be a fourth film in the franchise. But the next sequel proved to be surprisingly difficult to get into production. Until Warner Bros. realized they were heading into 1998 without a surefire summer hit on their hands. They gave Lethal Weapon 4 the greenlight and the movie was thrown together in a mad scramble. Twenty-five years later, it’s time to look back at the results of that rush job in this episode of Revisited.

The 1992 release was considered to be the most profitable film in Warner Bros. history. So studio executives and producer Joel Silver immediately started looking forward to Lethal Weapon 4. To win a Best Picture Oscar, a film has to have something about it.
Only 94 films in history have been given this award. They’re not voted on by the eccentric members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who pick the Golden Globes, or by specialist groups of critics, but by the roughly 10,000 members of the Academy. That is to say, the choice is made by distinguished figures from within the industry.
Sometimes, though, they do still make some baffling choices.
By the time the Oscars roll around at the end of the awards process, a herd mentality tends to have set in.
When everybody has already voted at all the other awards shows for, say, The King’s Speech or The Shape of Water, the Academy members follow suit. It’s rare for a Best Picture winner ever to be a complete surprise.
Nonetheless, a few questionable films have stolen glory that rightfully belonged elsewhere.

With Michael B. Jordan making his directorial debut with Creed III this weekend, we wanted to know what film by a first time Actor turned Director has been your favorite? Some came out of the gates with Oscar Glory (Kevin Costner/ Robert Redford) while others found a passion they haven’t looked back from (Ron Howard/ Sofia Coppola). If you don’t see your favorite listed, please let us know what (and who) it is in the comments section.
Update: I have rightly been called out for listing Braveheart as Mel Gibson’s first film when he actually directed a film prior to that called The Man Without a Face in 1993. So I guess the results are slightly skewed, but really, wasn’t Braveheart the first Mel Gibson directed film we all saw?!

When Sight and Sound magazine does their decennial list of the greatest films of all time, I find that more interesting than the actual list itself is exploring all of the ballots submitted by the various critics and filmmakers invited to participate. Because we already know the consensus, seeing what individuals include as one-off outliers says so much about what they look for when they go to the movies. Without question, the most interesting top ten ballot from 2022 was from Indian blockbuster auteur S.S. Rajamouli. Not a single one of his choices ended up on the final directors' poll list, and this isn't a case of his list being filled with Indian films that many people haven't seen. In fact, only one Indian film, K.V. Reddy's 1957 epic "Mayabazar," made his list.
Instead, his list was very Western and very populist. It features Steven Spielberg's action-adventure masterpiece "Raiders of the Lost Ark,...

When "Silent Hill 2" was released in 2001, the game changed the landscape of the survival horror genre in unprecedented ways. The second installment in the "Silent Hill" video game series accentuated the nightmarish terror of the original, transporting players into a liminal space where the most grotesque fears came alive. Among the many monsters that lurk around the shapeshifting town of Silent Hill is Pyramid Head, a faceless, hulking humanoid who still scares the bejesus out of players when revealed. Over the years, Pyramid Head achieved iconic status as a video game antagonist and began to represent the franchise as a whole. Although Pyramid Head was exclusively designed by Masahiro Ito to represent James Sunderland's repressed guilt in the second game, the growing popularity of the monster gradually distanced it from its original purpose.

Silent Hill art director Masahiro Ito recently took to Twitter once again and dropped some behind-the-scenes nuggets of info regarding the making of Silent Hill 2. The topic once again centred on the creation of everyone’s favourite monster in Pyramid Head, whose background was inspired by Mel Gibson‘s Braveheart.
According to Ito, the background of Pyramid Head as the executioner of the town came from the scene where Braveheart is executed (the famous “Freedom!” scene). Specifically, the hooded executioners were the inspiration behind the background of the franchise’s most famous antagonist.
“As to Pyramid Head, the background setting ‘as the executioner in the town’ was definitely inspired by the background character in Braveheart,” says Ito. “ut the background ‘as the character standing against James’ was inspired by this Louis’ quote from Jacob’s Ladder.”
Following that tweet, Ito then went back to a tweet that he had made...

"Kill your tears," silence your fears, and get ready to follow "The Woman King" into battle. In theaters this weekend, "The Woman King" stars Academy Award winner Viola Davis as General Nanisca, leader of the Agojie, described in the film's official trailer synopsis as an "all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen."
You might say General Nanisca has a "Braveheart" and is something of a "Gladiator," and apparently, the woman behind "The Woman King," director Gina Prince-Bythewood, looked to those movies for inspiration.
In an interview with A.frame, the digital magazine of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Prince-Bythewood discussed bringing the battle scenes to life in "The Woman King," and how she and her crew referenced what worked — and what didn't — in other historical epics:

Sony Pictures’ “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, is now playing in theaters, and much like past historical actioners like “Braveheart” or “Gladiator,” those who venture out to see the film will likely be wondering how much of it is rooted in fact.
John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Adrienne Warren and others star alongside Davis in the story of West African women warriors who take no husbands and serve in their positions for a lifetime to protect their nation.
Davis’ character is based on a real life historic figure named General Nanisca, and in the film she trains new recruits alongside Izogie (Lynch) and Amenza (Atim). Headstrong new recruit Nawi (Mbedu) and her peers Fumbe (Masali Baduza) and Ode (Adrienne Warren) challenge their elder superiors with new battle tactics, thoughts and principles.
So is “The Woman King” a true story? The short answer is yes,...

Usually the best said is saved for last at a Toronto Film Festival premiere, meaning the biggest speeches come during a pic’s Q&a session after the screening. However, The Woman King star and producer Viola Davis brought the house down with a passionate speech Friday about her “magnum opus” film, and how she hopes it inspires generations of Black women.
The TriStar release directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, comes out September 16, and has been known to be a possible world-building franchise. This morning, TriStar president Nicole Brown spoke at TIFF about how the female-driven Black period pic was a roll of the dice sans really any comps — except possibly Braveheart.

The first time Gina Prince-Bythewood and Viola Davis met about The Woman King, in the offices of Davis’ production company in the spring of 2020, the filmmaker broke one of the rules of her trade. “As I started talking about my connection to the material, I lost it,” Prince-Bythewood says. “There’s no crying in directing. Succession star Brian Cox has said Logan Roy, the arch-villain he plays in the HBO/Sky epic, would “hate me,” but claimed he “loves” and “respects the character.”
Cox told the Edinburgh TV Festival the pair share a “deep disappointment in the human experience” but he differs from Roy in being an “optimist.”
“I think things would get better and he doesn’t so Logan would hate me,” he said to a packed audience on the final day of the Festival. “He would say ‘I wish that Brian Cox would just shut the f*ck up’.”
Cox revealed he “loves” and “respects” the character, who he has portrayed with fanfare for three seasons, with a fourth in the offing.
“Unlike Trump or Murdoch he’s self made,” he explained. “He did it all himself. He’s a misanthrope, is kind of unhappy and his curse is he loves his children.

Mel Gibson's "Braveheart," a loose biography of the 13th century Scottish revolutionary William Wallace, was released in 1995 to much critical laud, with many critics and fans alike praising its dynamic, bloodied look at Scottish history. Actual historians, meanwhile, had a collective aneurysm over how inaccurate screenwriter Randall Wallace's view of history was. Screenwriter Wallace (no relation to William) took many of his cues from a 1488 poem called "The Wallace," written by Blind Harry. "The Wallace" was already an exaggeration of history, and subsequent poems and tales about William Wallace tended to expand the myth rather than seek accuracy. The inaccuracies and historical fudging committed by "Braveheart" is a matter of public record, and Wallace has said that the Blind Harry poem "spoke to [his] heart" more than it was accurate.

A loose continuation of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, with Angus Macfadyen reprising his titular role as Robert the Bruce, Richard Gray’s spin-off takes place after the death of William Wallace but before the Battle of Bannockburn — both depicted in the 1995 classic. Reeling from a string of defeats, Robert the Bruce disbands his loyal troops only to find himself on the run from the traitors among them, tempted by the price on his head. Enter Morag (Anna Hutchinson), a kindly widow whose husband gave his life for The Bruce’s cause; her young son Scot (Gabriel Bateman) encounters the injured king while hunting deer with his sister (Talitha Bateman) and cousin (Brandon Lessard), and together the family of crofters resolves to nurse him back to health, despite the threat posed by Morag’s bounty-hunting brother-in-law (Gianni Capaldi).
